Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

Build a kit featuring any brand of Girlpla, including but not limited to:
>Frame Arms Girl
>Megami Device
>30 Minute Sisters/Missions/Etc.
>Figure-Rise Standard
>Megalomaria
Additionally, any "Feminine" mechs like the Nobel Gundam or Valsione are fair game as well. What you do with your build in terms of theming is up to you so long as your base is "Feminine".

[SERIOUS QUESTION]

I want to upgrade my painting gear (I'm using a cheap entry level stuff). I've decided on my airbrush, but I'm not sure about the compressor.
My top pick is HobbyMio HM-05 Pro V2 because of its size and price. It also has a tank, which is very important, apparently?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdQZFEmszkU
I don't know how good this compressor is since there aren't many review videos on youtube unlike western or industrial-usage brands

The more premium brand like Sparmax and Iwata are also available, but the price is 3-4x HobbyMio and I don't think I want to pay that much, since I still need to spend a lot on paint supplies and of course the gunpla as well.

>>23881959
I want to experience something better, though I don't know what's considered better in the airbrushing world since I'm still stuck with an entry level gear.

So the HG Barbatos Adapt has arrived in Japan, and has fixed just about every single problem on all the frames through a pair of new plates. Now, remind me of the differences between the Gundam Frame 2 (Kimaris frame) and Gundam Frame 3 (Gusion Rebake frame) and how they differ from the Gundam Frames 1 (Astaroth frame, also paired with the Barbatos 4th Form) and 4 (general frame for everyone else). Because if they share the same chest, shoulder and hip frames, then transferring the Gundam Frame 5 (append parts introduced with the Adapt) to all others is gonna be seamless.
>>
>>23881943
that tank is too small, even in the video you can see how quickly the pressure drops when spraying

I agree. I've said before that it feels like bandai is missing out on a potential market here. EGs can be more than just for people to pick up gunpla, it can be good for people who want to take the hobby further and learn to paint or modify. And it's not like Bandai doesn't know there's a demand. I know they've got some gundam base exclusive 'painting model' that's more expensive than the normal version, which feels backwards. The stuff like re-colors, special coating, clear color/ transparent kit yeah I get making it special releases, but the painting models should be retail and priced cheaper.
>>
>>23882353
>>23882296
I wish they had continued with something like SEED's First Grade or whatever it was. I would generally like cheaply made 1/144 representations of basically everything that gets lineart. It's nicer to have something to work with than nothing for lesser designs that just aren't gonna sell much. Ideally with a lot less removed plastic than the SEED ones but at the end of the day scratchbuilding half a leg is better than the entire thing so really just any format.
>>
The Kiseki plamos are literally of old bootleg quality. Embarassing.

There were the winners from the fan contest 2 months prior to the game's release.

Ishigaki later did admit in a tweet that he was ordered to design Mk-iv as an intermediary between MK-III and MK-V with no account for the fan contest. He was even unaware of the fan contest as he was not a target demographic reader of the Comic Bonbon magazine.

Hey everyone, I have a few questions.
I kinda wanted to upgrade and improve my skills with building Gunpla, but I'm not sure how and in what order I should go.
Here is pic related the last 4 HG builds I did and with the tools I used.
As you can see, I'm not using any kind of spray and I'm still a beginner.
I did use Gloss Topcoat on a few earlier builds that I did, but basically, after I did panel lining and assembly, I just sprayed the entire model.

I was thinking of getting an airbrush and maybe some tool to make the lines look better? Maybe some weathering stuff?
But I just don't understand what is the "correct" way to do that stuff.

Do I first have to take apart everything, mark each part what it is and then airbrush them? Only then I need to go for the assembly?
Because that kinda sounds like overkill.
Do I need to airbrush red parts with red color, blue parts with blue color etc to make it look more real?
After airbrushing do I need to assemble everything, put top coat spray on the parts and ONLY then go for the weathering effect?

Sorry for the long post and my english, I'm not brown, just ESL
>>
>>23883678
you can't even use the legs beyond the side skirts.
the doven wold doesn't have those circular joint like parts on the lower thighs, the knees are different, the shin is lacking the connection point for the doven ankle armor, the calf thruster is in an entirely different point, the ankles and foot components are entirely different. everything in red would need to be changed.
>>
>>23883690
>Do I first have to take apart everything, mark each part what it is and then airbrush them? Only then I need to go for the assembly?
Most people assemble the kit first, then disassemble for painting. This lets you check for places that need more clearance before painting (tight connections, joints that might have the paint scrape off with movement), visualize the design better and customize the kit as a whole (kitbashing for example). Instead of marking each part you can just split them up into piles based on what color you want to paint them.
>Do I need to airbrush red parts with red color, blue parts with blue color etc to make it look more real?
If you are going for the default color scheme, then yes, a painted surface will look better than bare plastic.
>After airbrushing do I need to assemble everything, put top coat spray on the parts and ONLY then go for the weathering effect?
The standard order is paint -> gloss topcoat (protects the paint underneath from the weathering) -> weathering/panel lining -> final topcoat (matt or gloss depending on what you're going for). If you're doing decals then put them on after the first gloss coat (for easier application) and add another gloss coat to those areas before weathering so that your weathering effects don't seep under the decal/cause it to move)
>>
>>23881926
>>
>>23883705
1. Assembly
2. Airbrush parts by the color
3. Gloss topcoat
3a. Decals
4. Weathering/Panel lining
5. Matt or Gloss topcoat

I didn't know I had to Gloss topcoat twice, if I want to use Gloss that is

>>
>>23883714
3b gloss again if you want to weather over your decals.
Some of these steps can be skipped, depending on what paints you're using and what finish you're going for.
In the case of my current build, >>23882799 I am doing the following:
>assemble
>add magnets for attaching outer armor
>disassemble
>prime parts
>paint parts with shading
>decals and panel lining
>matt coat
Because I'm using high gloss lacquers, the painted surface is already good enough for decals and panel lining and durable enough by itself. I am not doing weathering and the decals and panel lines don't overlap so there's no need to separate them with a clear coat.
>>
>>23883690
Airbrushing is its entire own ordeal, before you do it you have to make sure you have the room to do it and the money to buy the necessary tools and equipment. There's a fuckload of expensive entry purchases, but in the long run it's far cheaper and more efficient than using rattle cans, provided you're going to paint more than two or three kits.

The trick to assembling and disassembling (which, as the other anon said, is to check tolerances and contact surfaces so you know where to sand and where to not paint) is to circumcise your pegs first. Reduce the friction just enough so that pulling the pieces apart is easier but not so much that the pieces simply come apart without your interference. Just a bit off the tip is enough, at a slight angle so that there's a small amount of exposed surface area.

Utlimately, you want to buy in big bulk purchases so that you don't get raped by shipping charges.

Where the fuck do people find Levelling Thinner in Japan? Shit was unobtainium.
>>
>>23883862
No. I disassemble some places all the way down (elbow/knee joints) to do different colors for different parts, but some I leave assembled because it would be a hassle to take apart and is gonna be the same color anyway, the waist and side skirts of the mg fag for example.
In the case of ms joint you can't fully disassemble it anyway because it's molded together.
>>
>>23883863
How do you thin Gaia notes paint?
Rapid thinner 1:2?
I've been thinking of buying Star Bright Gold and Silver because all the cool youtubers are using it for metallic build.
>>
>>23883869
mr rapid thinner around 1:2.5~3
Always do a high gloss black base underneath and spray in thin coats to increase the shine. If you spray it on thick the metal particles will settle on the bottom of the layer and look less good (or something like that).
>>
>>23883868
>disassemble some places all the way down (elbow/knee joints
I broke some painted ABS parts in my previous build and they had one thing in common: they were assembled movable joint parts (arm & knee). I guess joints have to be fully disassembled. what a pain.
>>
>>23883871
>2.5-3
why so thin?

>high gloss black base
which paint is this? I only have this one.
can't I just use normal black > gold/silver > gloss top coat?
>>
>>23883876
I only take them apart for color differentiation but yeah it's probably safer that way. You can probably just do thinner, drier coats and be fine, though you want to get full coverage of the moving parts anyway so there's no point keeping them assembled.
>>
>>23883878
This a primer bro.
>>
>>23883880
yea but it's black
>>
>>23883881
Still it's a primer so you need to paint over even if you want to use black.
>>
>>23883878
>why so thin?
Because the paint still has great coverage and thinner is cheaper than paint. I always thin as much as I can to increase the longevity of my paint. Also thinner paint will give you a smoother finish without risk of overspraying and getting orange peel.
>which paint is this?
I use gaia ex black. If you want a mr color equivalent, go with GX ueno black or whatever it's called. Most lacquers are gloss by default and the type of finish should be written on the bottle.
>I only have this one.
That is a surfacer and has a matte finish. If you paint metallics over a matte surface you will get a duller, less shiny effect than over gloss.
If you don't want to buy black paint for some reason then you should do black surfacer > gloss > metallic.
I usually don't topcoat my metallics but depending on the finish you want to get you might want to do it.
>>
>>23883838
>Early RG
you're going to summing the schizo if you say the whole thing!
>>
>>23883882

>I usually don't topcoat my metallics
so no protection for the paint and decals?
>>
How long can you store paint / thinned paint before it goes bad?
>>
>>23883902
>so no protection for the paint and decals?
I rarely put decals on top of metallics and I don't hamhand the kit so the paint doesn't get damaged anyway. If you want to add topcoat at the end then go ahead, gloss doesn't worsen the finish.
>>
>>23883908
>thinned paint
I have a lot of dropper bottles I put 1:1 lacquer and thinner 3 years ago and they still work just fine. Make sure to add in metal mixing balls of course.

>>
>>23883918
>why not just use Black Gloss immediately?
You can and I sometimes do. The initial primer coat does give the paint better grip though so if it's a part that gets a lot of contact or is at risk of scratching against other things I do recommend priming. Also feels a bit safer on ABS specifically.

Surely it's not that simple.
>>

And again, the white looks completely different depending on the lighting. This cold version is a bit closer to how it actually looks irl.
>>
>>23883989
Besides having to use the right type of paper with the right type of printer, most printers can't print white, and the way most printers do "light" colors is by printing to a degree of transparency since it assumes that the paper you're printing it on is white. So, your decals will end up looking somewhat off if you don't apply them to a pure white piece, unless you use solid white decal paper (which in turn means no transparency).
>>
>>23884002

It costing $700 is more an issue of gaijins not having human rights in this hobby and its original price of 60k yen is actually more or less justifiable (though the light kit being separate and 14k yen is no good).

are the extra accessories really Bandai's justification at making every other G Gundam kits p-bandai exclusive?
>>
>>23884400
i saw the actual PGU Unleashed Nu displayed on a local event. it IS huge, but i don't feel it justifies the 3x price jump compared to PGU Unleased RX-78.

Looks great overall but I think it loses a little something when the chest is covered up with the big smooth piece
>>
>>23884885
Yeah and it's also very, very intricately detailed. But yeh, not too pricey nonetheless.
>>
why is Hyperlion 190 usd at the minimum? It's not even that large.
>>
>>23884885
A few things to consider:

1. PGU The Gundam didn't even come with the bazooka, as a cost-saving measure. The PGU Nu not only does, but also has a set of Fin Funnels. If The Gundam did have the bazooka and maybe even the Gundam Hammer, it would probably have cost 25-50% more.

2. OYW era mobile suits are notorious for being midgets, and MS size ballooned out of control in the following conflicts, resulting in Xi and Penelope basically being mobile armor sized, before next-generation technologies allowed them to shrink mobile suit size back down in Late UC. And since the Nu is developed near the pinnacle of this technological trend, it's quite massive compared to The Gundam.

3. They added even more goddamned layers for the PGU Nu. Whereas The Gundam had one extra layer between the skeleton and armor, the Nu has more. It's super dense.

>>
>>23885117
honestly the HG probably has as many parts and with the stand and shit probably about as much plastic as the MG all in the box
the G Gundam MGs are pretty simple
>>
>>23885165
it's SMP-tier with numerous effect parts. It's definitely the extras that drove the price high.
>>
>>23885164

Bolt better come with a unique action base to pose it using the Gaia Crusher and splitting the earth apart for how fucking long they're making me wait for my third fave of the series
>>
>>23885165
I wouldn't say that. The HG's end result are still smaller compares to MGs, not to mention G Gundam HGs are pretty up to standard, they are not at the level of Reben Wolf.
>>
>>23885165
No way in hell there is that much plastic in the box. The extras are like a runner's worth extra plastic when compared to a normal HG, maybe a runner and a half at most. It's upcharged simply because everything is these days.

G Gundam HGs might as well be the Reben Wolf, they aren't so complicated to have as many parts as it but they just about perfectly recreate everything they did and then some with the extras which is ultimately all the Reben did, it's just a big boy with a complex design to work with. They haven't really left anything to be wanted overall. We'll see but I doubt the X HGAWs coming are going to be as nice. We know they won't have effect parts but I'll be surprised if they have all the hand options even despite those being a general frame they could reuse for basically every 90s AU gundam design. They did give them equipment they didn't have to at least so that's cool.

>>23885180
It's a little closer than you might think really but yeah the MG definitely has more. Obviously you're buying more than just volume of plastic and in general it is just the ever increasing march of inflation, time, and now stupid extra increases depending but I guess my ultimate point is you actually get a good amount of stuff still in comparison to the MG despite it.

>they aren't so complicated to have as many parts as it but they just about perfectly recreate everything they did and then some with the extras which is ultimately all the Reben did
Nah, Reben Wolf is on another league completely compares to G Gundam HGs. It is legitimately a complex HG with locking mechanic, functional monoeye, verniers with ratchet and every bodypart is padded with plastic inside that it almost has an inner frame.
>>
>>23885117
I mean, that MG is ancient as all hell. It doesn't even hold half a candle to MG kits made in 2010, let alone the marvels of modern engineering we get today. Hell, modern HG kits probably blow it out of the water.
>>
>>23885285
Even a couple years after it's release kits would be leaps and bounds more advanced. Shit was moving at the speed of light back then. We went from basically large HGs, to partial frames, to the g gundam fighting frame, to early MG full frames, to advanced 2.0 style frames in like 5 years. And then we started to regress.
>>
>>23885264
It's all Gundamslop anyway. Nothing of value was lost.

I cannot get over the fact that Spielgel is around the same MSRP as Reben Wolf. G Gundam MS are literall manlets.

What's the cheapest and/or the most fun option if I want a friendly robot but with some fuck-huge booster like the Dendrobium, Seed Meteor units, Narrative, or the sort of upgrade that super robots get?
The HGBF backpacks don't look great (maybe the Galaxy Booster if I'm desperate), but I'm eyeing the Gunbarrel Striker, I was hoping for something with bigger wings or guns though. I already like the Mk-II and Super Gundam separately, so I'm waiting for the latter to get in stock.

>>
>>23884661
hi-nu 1.0, extreme burst mode/extreme blast mode freedom/destiny and providence along with the others previously mentioned.

technically you can include a few add-on sets:
pbandai:
>moonlight butterfly for turn A/X
>V2 wings of light
>sazabi/re/100 jagd doga funnel effect sets
>nu ver ka double fin funnel set
>freedom 2.0 effect expansion set
>providence effect expansion set
>barbatos expansion set

then even more obscure are the HY2M kits, including:
>God finger set (MG-W01)
>shining finger/whatever that orb god threw in the final episode was called (MG-W02)
>>
>>23885264
