Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

which are just of Raven's Geno Saurers. I expect three more variations of Geno Breaker because Raven is the Char of Zoids. I'm actually surprised they did Bio Volcano though, which is the only other theropod zoid in the line. Half of the line are Van and Raven's zoids and more than of the line are grunts for whatever reason.

Recently getting into gunpla brought back some long buried memories of my early childhood

I somehow got a MG Zaku II for a (birthday?) present. Unfortunately, I neither knew what a Zaku was nor how to build gunpla. So my dad made my brother (who was into gunpla) build it. Unfortunately I tried to be helpful and clipped out all the parts before my brother was called in to help. He somehow completed it anyway, and then refused to give it back to me since he did all the work.

I don't blame him. I was a spoiled kid and he was an angry teen back then. I have half a mind to buy an mg zaku II (the original) to see what building it would have been like, but it's so darn expensive.

This is a somewhat ignorant response. the US petrochemical industry isn't set up for the production of naphtha (precursor to both PS and ABS) as the US blends naphtha distillates into fuel during the production of gasoline. Most US plastic production is based on using ethane derivative polymers due to the huge ethane release in shale oil extraction.

The vast majority of naphtha production comes from either oil processed directly in the middle east, or from crude from the middle east and processed in India and China. Naphtha is not a byproduct, and must be intentionally distilled. Ethane is a byproduct.

That shouldn't be a issue due to part separation, right? I'd want to buy all of the primary colors anyway for doing other kits.

The only unbuilt zaku I currently have is gq police zaku.

If you think zero is too much for babbies first airbrush I have police zaku which is just blue, and ground type which is mostly white. If I did ground type I'd definitely want to try and weather him though.
>>
>>23889729
Bandai has been using the same loli-esque artstyle for their girls and the decal quality is not very good. The tampo faces always seem so weird compares to Koto's.
>>
>>23889733
no, it's a huge issue because the first mistake you WILL make will be before the painting process itself: thinning the paint. more colors = you will waste more paint due to errors. also cleaning the airbrush for color switching.
>>
>>23889733
>Police Zaku
Not really. The kit has 2 shades of blue, the verniers supposed to be red inside and the shield's Japanese letter is a huge bottleneck. It is unironically more difficult to paint than Wing Zero unless you just make a fanfiction build.
>>
>>23889482
That is the 1.0 version, that had a reprint recently so should not be that expensive. But better get the 2.0 version anyway, it's a better kit and, atleast in Char version, widely available.
>>
>>23889733
My go to recs for people wanting to get deeper into the hobby will always be the HG Qubeley
>big blank wings and limbs armors with minimal detail
Good for practicing scribing if you want to. Or for straight painting to practice consistent paint job. Big surface areas so it's easier for you to notice mistakes plus just general easy way of getting the sense of the painting process.
>Nagano design logic is about contrasting the more complex inner joints designs vs the relatively simpler exterior armot
This is good for you to practice finer paintbrush detail work on like using multiple colors for the cables and what not.
So for starting out, you can have 1 main color for the exterior, then a darker color for the joints/ exposed inner body, and then maybe gundam marker + fine brush for other misc details.
>>
>>23889740
I'd probably just buy the water slide set for the police zaku if I went that route. Interesting.
>>23889739
I didnt think of that. Hmm. I'll probably just end up shelving these for future paint projects or just snap build them then. Ill see if I can pick up a zaku for it.

Somehow been collecting gunpla for over a year and never bought just a standard hg green zaku.
>>
>>23889741
that was me complaining a few threads back about how red zakus are cheaper/more vailable than green ones
>>
>>23889744
What I did when I first decided to get into painting was to buy several chink bootlegs HGs. Super cheap so it's not much of an issue even if you fuck up. Yes, people will tell you to practice/ experiment on spoons, but actually painting on a 'pla will end up being different.
>>
I bought 100 plastic spoon for color test but never used it lol I'm too stingy to waste paint for practice.
>>
>>23889749

gaiz, I just ordered the revised version of the bootleg HG Rehaze kit.

What exactly is "revised" about it? Do the leg joints not suck anymore? Do the skirt armor panels actually stay attached now?

>>23889875
This kit has alot of problem. The chest armor doesn't stay on. The leg joints are not strong enough to handle to heavy weight. The base for the big gun is half assed. Not to mention using black plastic for the joints is just a massive mistake by itself, they should have used the purple plastic like every other AOZ kits.

I am not Poland Anon, so sadly I don't have a huge stack of parts for random 30ms projects. The first pic is what I had myself from a Tiasha, the hands, face plate and two of the arms she currently has are from a friend's parts box. I like 30ms this far, they are easy to kitbash and convert and I noticed some stores over here do have semi regular sales on 30mm/ms stuff so I will pick up some more kits and parts packs.

I paid €125,- shipped but that was in December so it will prolly be more expensive now. Ali prices are all over the place, just get the cheapest one from a seller with good reviews/money back guarantee and make sure you don't click the €5,- antenea part and think you had a great deal. By now the cheap and available thing is the 1/60 king crab, for as low as €100,- shipped, if you wait a while and stocks are running lower you'll see prices go up again. Shopping at Chang's always feels like a quest.

The real answer is that KPS can have a painted-like looks with matte finish and the material doesn't react strongly to GSI Creos paint, which is one of Bandai's biggest shill.
>>

>>
>>23890161
What about Jumpwind? That gotta be the most dogshit paint i have ever seen.
>>
>>23890156
More about snapshit friendly. In one of Gundambase blog, they said KPS looks good even without paint and they decided to use it. That's the main purpose, the modeling thingy is just an afterthought.
>>
>>23890167
Snapfaggots ruin everything they touch
>>
>>23890167
nah man. ABS can pick up sand-blasted tooling to produce matte finishings too and Takara's been doing that for 20+ years on their toys. Don't take the gunpla mafia's word at face value.
>>
>>23890163
What's so bad about it?
>>
>>23890169
I mean, it is what they believe in and actually practice what they preach so i'm not gonna make conspiracy theory on that.
>>
If Bandai's aim is reeeeeally for improving snapshit experience, why don't they use tree-like runners with single-gated parts (most common injection mold design) or just precut the parts altogether? Surely it's not to force you to buy expensive nippers that break easily...
>>
They say safety flags are for durability reasons, then insult you if you don't remove them with expensive hobby knives, but why can't Bandai just use more durable plastic...?

>or just precut the parts altogether? Surely it's not to force you to buy expensive nippers that break easily...
They have been pushing touchgates for a long time in EG and Pokemon. Not to mention the plastic is getting softer, the gate is getting less prominent and less of a toll on the nipper. You can technically build alot of modern HGs with minimal nipper usage, cut one gate and rip the part out using your hand.
>>
>>23890183
They do. It's Bandai Hobby that is retarded.

>>
>>23890179
Single gated runner is a bitch to remove from the mold and a recipe for disaster if you intend to ship it world wide. Plamo companies only use it for polycaps and POM.
>>
>>23890183
Stop releating these lies. The safety flags are there to comply with safety regulations, because HG kits are marketed to a younger audience. As an adult, you are absolutely free to snip it because it would be your own damn fault if you're that old and still somehow manage to poke your eye out with it.

do you ever feel like some parts are just busywork? like "I just put these two grey parts together... these could have been just one grey part". Obviously building is part of the fun, but I figure they'd usually be for movement/color separation/structural integrity reasons. Or is there a reason for it usually?
>>
>>23890198
If you are going to take a break, it is recommended to flush out paint, sometimes add some water/cleaner to the cup after that. Flushing takes just few seconds anyway so it's okay but you don't want to let any paint to dry inside as it will only make it harder to remove. If by alcohol you mean IPA, then yes, I would recommend mixing it with water (50/50), still cleans but is not as strong. Yet, now most airbrush models use teflon seals so it won't be a problem to run typical 80% IPA. There are also dedicated cleaning solutions in handy bottles.

H&S have good videos on airbrush handle subject, including cleaning. I suggest to check them out, even if you don't use their products: https://youtube.com/watch?v=7RVPzj0YXi8

Easier than you'd think. Just take what premade parts you can from other kits, and what you can't find, sculpt out of putty; and then refine the shape through endless rounds of sanding and filling until you've got what you want. The "best" modelers are often just people with the highest tolerance for monotony.

I bought this guy a little while ago and there isn't much wrong with it. The biggest issue is that it struggles to hold the shield/rifle. It uses the standard TR-6 wrist joint, which already struggles with the CSB that it comes with, so when you add a giant barrel to it the issue is exacerbated further.

I fixed it by reinforcing joints of the entire arm. Now it handles it just fine. It's been holding this pose for a few months and nothing is drooping.

>>
>>23890204
It is easier mold design wise to only have detail on one side of a part. Additionally it's less plastic used on anything that would have any hollow interior space. Remember that anywhere there is a void inside a part there has to be metal when it is getting shot and the metal has to have a path out of the part.
