It locks them into being tied to those series and fan expectations of them. No game is going to work when it has to manage those, it will never find broader market success because the adherence to them drives people away. The ONLY Gundam-related games that have succeeded in the past have been the SRW games, and they succeed because it takes everything from all series and throws it together with other ones. No series conventions to strictly adhere to, not when the Nu can team up the Tallgeese and a fucking Eva. Everything else has been niche at best, or short-lived and mismanaged at worst. Frankly, I'm surprised BN had the foresight to realize the only path forward for high-quality, single-player Gundam games is the need to establish a separate, non-animated, non-literary Gundam AU. It's the right move if you want to entice people with the IDEA of Gundam, without shackling them with the decades-long franchise history. It would have fucking SUCKED that the first adaptation seen of Eight would be a game.
