Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-=GIRLPLA GROUPBUILD=-

Build a kit featuring any brand of Girlpla, including but not limited to:
>Frame Arms Girl
>Megami Device
>30 Minute Sisters/Missions/Etc.
>Figure-Rise Standard
>Megalomaria
Additionally, any "Feminine" mechs like the Nobel Gundam or Valsione are fair game as well. What you do with your build in terms of theming is up to you so long as your base is "Feminine".

Send a description along with both WIP and Finished images of your build to gunplaplamo@gmail.com

I used Army Painter's Greedy Gold with their Speedpaint Blood Red (mixed with ~5% of Hive Dweller Purple) on top.
I used the same combo on a previous kit and it looked far more like a candy paintjob. I think it was because that was with a different airbrush that was half clogged and sprayed tiny amounts. Overspraying is probably what caused the red to end up more opaque.

On the contrary, I was glad to get back to Bandai and Kotobukiya plastic girls after checking few Chinese ones. Main criticism is the same as for most Chinese models - too much unnecessary decorations that make posing, building and painting more problematic than it should, tacky/gaudy style and design overall and low quality control - I can understand sanding selected joints after test fitting all of them but sanding every single one and drilling connections is a bit too much.

There are some that get ahead like Nuke Matrix "Fox Unit" (in design tho, her quality control is very low) but overall they are not as amazing as some people claim. Then again, there are people in this very thread that can't stop sucking Chinese dicks 24/7 so borderline shilling is sadly expected.

I both fucked up and learned a lot, wasted so much paint, sloppily handpainted details, had to buy a second copy to fix some things, but I'm happy enough with the result

I wanted to do double wings, but the backpack that comes with the funnel set is so horribly waffled I opted to turn the extra shield connector into a jig so I could mount funnels to the other arm instead

Retard painting noob question but is it normal for a room to smell a little when painting into a spray booth? It's moving air pretty well and sucks up smoke no problem. Is residual lacquer smell avoidable in a small space at all?

How's this decal brand compared to Delpi's?
>>
>>23936625
Purportedly they're somewhere between Bandai and Delpi in terms of quality, though you might like their use of colors better than Delpi's since they use different kinds of printers. They should be slightly cheaper than Delpi and easier to buy (I've seen them on Ali on occasion, buying from the right vendor there means not having to pay shipping).

Zakus look pretty goofy to me so this pose works perfectly fine.

I was looking at some bare plastic I topcoated last night before leaving for work today.
Why does topcoat clear up all the pigment swirls in the actual plastic from the injection molding? I remember there being some pretty obvious ones in the blue parts, but looking this morning I couldn't find them.
Is it because lacquer slightly melts the plastic surface and that moves the pigments? Or is the clear just messing with the light enough to make them hard to see?

The BT models Bootleg also arrived, the Manual has (wonky but still) English translations and a better paint/decal placement guide. It's Red red instead of the slight rusty orange but besides the pistons frames being molded in color instead of painted the sprues and the rest of the manual are straight up the same. Welke see when I build them, the Koto one is already tight in some places and I am not even done yet and the few reviews I did read and watch about the BT one mention very tight connections and joints. I am still going to paint atleast one of them, I have some color schemes in mind already.

Working on mocking up the main body before sanding and painting. Had to engineer an entirely new solution to connect the torso and shoulder, but that was always going to be the project's biggest hurdle. The shoulders use balls and the original torso uses pegs, so I removed the original connection and added the balls, but there wasn't a good way to connect them into the chest. Turns out the beam sabers of the HG Mighty Strike Freedom were the perfect thickness to connect into the polycaps, and only needed a little bit of filing to work for the ball joints.

You should thin your paints and go in multiple thin coats. When you do chipping, it makes more sense to keep it restrained to areas that are sticking out and thus are more exposed.

Use Varnish.
IMO water-based acrylics work better for handpainting than airbrushing. Maybe try Vallejo Air or Mr Hobby Acrysion
Also, you spray without a booth?
>>
>>23938835
>Use Varnish
The paint still disintegrates at the slighest pressure or chemical disturbance. Yes it's fully cured.
>water-based acrylics work better for handpainting than airbrushing
Yeah but I wanna airbrush
>Maybe try Vallejo Air or Mr Hobby Acrysion
Brands I've tried are Tamiya, Vallejo, and Army Painter. None of them are particularly great, but Army Painter paints are especially bad (they make the airbrush spit after like 10 minutes of painting even while trying to prevent tip dry)
>you spray without a booth?
I paint in front of the open door to my backyard, that's more than enough for acrylics. Wouldn't trust that setup with lacquer though.

I just bought HG Beguir Beu, but unsure which decal I should use. they're around the same price.
I like Ghost the best, but Artisan Club and Simp EVO include decal sets for other WfM kits too, so I'd get some nice leftover decals.
hmm...
>>
>>23938838
I like the bottom right, big bold line decals are always good and you would probably only use like a third of the smaller caution markings at most, leaving you with a bunch of pretty good generic white and grey decals. I would only go for the multi kit ones if you already have or are planning to get some of them, since a chunk of the decals would be model numbers or faction symbols specifically for those so not as universal.

>>
>>23938859
yes
>>
>>23938872
If I have to press even slightly hard with my fingers on a piece to fit, the paint disappears completely in the spot I pressed (primer and all). Even using too much force with a cotton swab can be enough to damage the paint.
Honestly baffled that my paintjobs are this fragile, I'm open to suggestions...

What kind of primer do you use and what kind of surface prep do you do? Gunpla parts are a lot smoother than miniature parts, so acrylic primer (which mostly relies on mechanical bonds, not chemical like lacquer) doesn't stick especially well.
>>
>>23938882(me)
also what kind of varnish/topcoat do you use
>>
>>23938882
>>23938884
Only surface prep I do is cleaning the parts before painting.
Primer: Mr Surfacer Aqueous 1500
Varnish: Army Painter Gloss

Yeah I definitely suspect that the paint I use (especially Army Painter) isn't suited for Gunpla.
>>
what's the difference between topcoat and varnish? is it just gunpla vs warhammer lingo difference?
>>
>>23938891
it's a bit odd that your surfacer layer is peeling off, that shouldn't happen for mr surfacer, how long do you let it cure before applying your colour?

Yes, clearcoat is another term.
The only difference that matters is whether the topcoat is acrylic, lacquer, or something else.

I haven't seen it in stock, but the Schuzrum Dias is a more readily available red Rick Dias with a different set of binders on the back. No, I don't know why the regular Richard Dias is retail, and the red one that we've seen more often due to the sheer fact that our favourite retard decided to paint all three of them red is the one that's p-bandai, but I'm planning to nab the Schuzrum Dias at some point and just... ignore the mega backpack
>>
>>23938913

I don't think that thing's been reprinted this decade. If you want a red rick dias either just paint the black one or get the pbandai (and paint it too because you should always paint your kits).

The HG is a standard by the numbers 2010s HG. The RG has almost perfect color separation (except for the red eye scars), more detail and a very solid build. It also has a cloak and cooler effect parts. The RG massively mogs the HG but if you want a crossbone asap just get the HG, there's nothing wrong with it.

I don't use them as daily drivers either, I have an rattling old, 80s Volvo for that. X-2 is part of the main Crossbone story. Seabook/Kincade pilots the X-1, Zabine pilots the X-2. Main character Tobia pilots other mobile suits until he gets the X-3 late in the story, kamikazes it to stop a nuclear warhead-equipped mobile armor, and Seabook entrusts him with the X-1 as a replacement. The Full Cloth is the X-1, chock-full of every weapon the Crossbone Vanguard can find for a one-way raid on the Jupiter Empire's colony laser.

back then in the late 90s, MGs were initially introduced as to the pro line for pro modeler and to bring UC designs with modern 1/100 kits (the difference between 1990 HG1/100 RX-78 to 1995 HG 1/100 Wing Gundam is huge)

while the price difference is big from HG 1/100 to MG 1/100 is big, the initial MG line was still quite inexpensive, which made the line popular. this continued even when there are polls Bandai made that majority are willing to pay higher prices for MG as long it brings better detail and more parts.

Bandai made many decisions like packing more parts in a runner to reduce moulds used, piicking more popular MS, mixing their own blend of plastic to make cheap kind of plastic to reduce costs. thus, it cultivated a culture that modelers expect MGs to be cheap.

all blew up because of Ukraine-Russia war. suddenly, materials needed for making model kits become extremely expensive, to the point that Bandai has to raise prices even on reprinted gunpla, which was unheard of before.

now, they are having problems because 1/144 HGs are good now, they are almost reaching the price of a standard MG, yet MG fans expect the price to be low, and if they introduce a pricey MG, they will raise a fuss.

TL:DR; its a catch 22 situation, Ukraine-Russia affected their price, have a Secelia
