Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

I can kinda see what they were going for when you see the internals and kinda squint and compare a little
I'm sure the intention is they cut them down and are using just pieces of them effectively anyway, it seems reasonable enough each side is formed of a portion of the curved bit of each shield.
>>
What do you think about this paticular version of the Zeta?
>>
>>23948178
I love the shield design a lot and thought about picking it up for it but I've got enough on my plate
Not as big on the backpack changes and transformation overall but it's fine
>>
>>23948178
I like it more just because of the shield design.
>>
>>23948176
Two weird implications from this. First is that the feds think a zaku's shoulder shield is better than Luna titanium. And the other is that they sourced a bunch of zaku shoulder shields and refabricated them into a perfect looking slab of chest plate armor.

The Ez-8 was just a quick and dirty field refit, while some bits are improvements it's overall just getting it back working again in proper form.
They've definitely downed a handful of Zakus in their operations areas through the anime at that point so no doubt they have access to them as salvage

Whatever is free. The dividers used to sort comic books in comic stores are 2mm thick styrene. The local comic shop would just give away any old ones if asked when i was a kid.
When I was older, I found out the local collage would surface their desktops with 1.5 mm styrene and replace it every term. That was as many large poster sized chunks of styrene as I could carry.

For anything else, I'll buy Evergreen styrene sheets, tubes and strips.

I settled for dispae. Tamiya is getting priced gouged on my store, and the cheaper brands dont come with grids and I'm autistic enough to want them.

I'm just going to use them to flatten the side of my GTO zaku upper chest, but plaplate seems easier than putty. For that sort of thing. Is cement enough if I'm covering something wide, or should I use superglue?
>>
>>23948256
Cement should be stronger, actually.
>>
>>23948256
If you're trying to bond plastic, cement is always gonna be stronger. If you're worried about coverage on larger parts then get some cement that isn't the super thin stuff, those exist for a reason

Is it safe to peel off masking tape before the (acrylic) paint is fully cured?
>>
>>23948332
I probably will desu, but there won't be a playerbase for it.

Official support would mean that each Assault figure could launch alongside a tie-in HG that comes with their resource card and be usable in tournaments. Bootlegging everything means I need to find my own players, hope they have the 1/144s they actually want to play with, and organize everything for, at best, a couple successful 1v1s. Basically it would be a janky mess to get rolling.
>>
>>23948320
I think playing with HGs would also really sell the vibe that the conflict is between giant mechs.
The default version of Assault being the same size as Warhammer doesn't really lean into that fantasy
>>
>>23948164
Thinking of getting either HG YF-19 or 21. Has anyone built them, what do you think of them? I'm also wondering if its possible to paint it without sanding or masking every joint or connecting part and not get all your paint destroyed after the first transformation.

Read "phoneposting" as "posting directly from a phone in such a streamlined and low-effort manner that posters do not care to check the quality of said posts before submitting them, leading to a substantial increase in various artifacting, typographical errors, and similar." I built the YF-29. It's pretty good and makes me wish most transforming suits were part formers like it.
I didn't paint it, just gloss coated it to keep all the decals on. Did it in my usual way of doing it as subassemblies with no masking of joints and it went fine. No obvious scratches but I only transformed it from robot -> gerwalk -> Plane twice and it was a lacquer gloss coat.

Does pre-thinning paint actually affect them if they aren't used up within a few months? I've heard some modelers say the paint will get ruined if it sits too long so only pre-thin things you'll use a lot, such as white/black/primer/top coat/etc.

Well, the problem is you're only looking at main character gundams. You can't really escape it in RG, but MG has tons of different grunts, villian suits, special suit customs, etc.

I do think the main UC ones (RX-78, both Zetas, and Nu) are distinct enough to appreciate on their own, especially if you paint them/buy alternate colors or additional equipment like the full armors. It's also worth mentioning the size aspect, some suits are way taller (or smaller) and bulkier than others even if they seem similar and it gives them a very different presence in-person.
>>

Personally the coolest thing about them being partsformers is that you can actually display them in plane mode with their battroid chest and head too since those are separate bits entirely.

Have you watched the anime at all? Do you know what the Gundam X even does? Seems like a silly question to ask cus it's tied to the entire feature of the suit. They're just some manner of temporary energy storage for the burst of energy it receives from the Moon facility for the satellite cannon, same as the back panels and Double X's opening gold flaps

in addition to what was said, to be explicit about it, they only glow when they receive energy

I don't know what bandais problem is that makes them refuse to undergate some plated runners. The PG red frame astray drives me insane because it has nub marks on gold plated parts on the sword. I fixed it with paint but I shouldn't have to.

Feels good to see someone who shares my opinion on this. The Gundam fandom is an echo chamber of people who like to pretend the mechs are totally different by justifying it (coping) with the show which are just forgettable ads for the model kits.

You've gotten a few defensive replies, but you're right; outside out of a few unique designs like Zeta, Barbatos, Turn A and GQ, every last one of them are variations of the same general design. Even Tomino himself once said about Gundam mecha design: "The details on the exterior are drawn in a cool and meticulous way, but in the end if you remove everything on the surface, it’s just a copy of another character."
The only real thing that differentiates them is the emotional connection, so it's not surprising they all blend together if you haven't watched any of the anime. Once you do, even irredeemably ugly designs like the Dijeh are saved because "Amuro piloted this in Zeta Gundam!".

Skill issue. Yeah, arr protag suits rook the same and have some of the worst, most uninspired designs in the franchise, but there are a ton of mobile suits besides them. As someone who doesn't give a fuck about the cartoons, you should have an easier time choosing distinct looking suits, differently from someone who actually cares about who they belong to and how they were portrayed.
Just do some research. Here, I thought about it for five minutes and wrote down a bunch of suits that look nothing like each other. Just take a look and see if you like any of them:
Farsia, Sigrun/Grimgerde, Turn X, Hyakuri, Rick Dom, Zaku II, Gadess/Gadessa, Gerbera Tetra, The O, Ball/Polypodball, Dynames, Lfrith Ur/Lfrith Thron, Grimoire, Xavier's Gyan, Baund Doc and Guntank.

Does Gunpla General like these included stands?
>>
>>23949096
They're sovlful.
>>
>>23949096
yeah they're fine for most HGs and every other bootleg comes with one
>>
>>23949098
I like that they can self-collapse for storage, comes in pretty much one runner, and pretty much makes the action base 2 obsolete while taking up much less space while costing less.
>>
>>23949101
The only weakness of these action base is that they are too short, large HGs don't look good on them.
>>
>>23949105
Plus poses on them can be a bit stiff. But considering the fact you get so many of them in so many different official and bootleg kits, they're pretty damn handy. I will never complain if I open the box and there's an included stand.
>>
>>23949096
honestly they're pretty brilliant, someone cooked with those
you can plug in all sorts of crap like funnels etc in the holes it comes with and while the design isn't great for anything with stuff hanging off its ass you can flip it backwards and it works pretty well too
I wish they had one that was like twice as long so you could tier displays or pose bigger stuff on them, they're sturdy enough for pretty much anything in a normal pose
>>
>>23949108
Almost every Bandai girlpla has them, including the height extention while for Gunpla they are like gacha, some kits have them some don"t. They are less finicky than the retail base and require less assembly, which is honestly such a godsent. I never have enough willpower to build more than 1 action base in 1 sitting.
>>
>>23949111
Girlpla has the tall version since you can't just stick it to the girl's anus. They were designed for the back.

How exactly do watercolors fit into the whole concept of "hot" paints, specifically the rule about always having the hot paints below the "cold" paints?

Pic-rel is a test I made with AK Weathering (watercolor) pencils to see what would happen. The brownish-red squiggly bit on the top of the head (which is the bottom of the pic) was applied dry over a matte topcoat then the entire piece was painted over with gloss Mr Color Super Clear UV-cut not that it's relevant here but there will be another matte coat on top later. I was expecting the watercolor pigments to run but was pleasantly surprised to see them hold even though watercolors are extremely weak.

Are watercolors an exception to the rule, or is the exception when the hotter paint is just a topcoat? Or did I just get lucky here? Or does it have to do with the fact that I applied the watercolors dry instead of wet?

The topcoat is 2:1 thinner:paint ratio, applied with an airbrush on low-pressure in a single pass. Maybe it works since I'm carefully topcoating in very thin coats such that the solvents don't build up?

This is definitely a positive development as I did not want the watercolors to run, I'm just trying to understand how this works before I put more brown and black squiggles on every sharp edge.

I am the only one that remembers and likes this bootleg. Wish I got it back in the day, 15 years later it's probably impossible.
>>
>>23949462
Allegedly this is becoming retail very soon.
>>
>>23949464
what does that mean even? it was always regular retail as much as any other bootleg

I'm referring to the official bandai version.
>>
>>23949467
and that's completely and utterly irrelevant here?
I'm so confused
>>
>>23949467
You mean the official bandai version that looks nothing like this bootleg?
>>
>>23949464
What it did is get in the top spots of a poll. But we all know how much Bandai respects the results of their polls.
>>
>>23949462
Damn I actually vaguely remember this Gundoom brand. I think they did a 1/144 Xi kit that looked pretty close to the Fujita redesign way back in the day.

it was kinda ugly as sin, so glad the official HG is radically different

It's close enough to the real version and it's not that big of a deal.

Maybe but if they don't redesign the kit for the third movie this might end up being the closest to the Fujita design we're gonna get.

Looks like the Katoki Penelope to me. Which is one of those designs that were butchered when translated into his style.

Common kit that I havent figured out a color scheme for yet. Uncommon kit that I want to wait till I'm a little more skilled.

Paint is done on the ZZ. I don't know how Judau was making the moves he did in this thing. It doesn't like to pose. The big issue is the wrist being a peg. Makes it hard to make it hold the gun well.
Paint is done though. All I need to do is panel line the thing and it'll be done. It needs no decals,

>>23949504
Oh I get that. I sat on an MG gogg for like 6 months trying to think of a color scheme I liked for it.
You can always do a kit and go back to it later once you can do better. Lately I've almost exclusively been painting years old snapbuilds.
Pic related. I snapbuilt this ZZ a few years ago. Having so much fun with it I might get an enhanced ZZ just to paint it the minty color from the show. Unfortunately I am planning a long motorcycle tour soon so I can't buy anything. That's why I am painting old kit instead of getting new ones. I also can't buy new paints to that end which is why this is painted with gundam blue and sazabi red,

would be deadly in build fighters where it's plamo clashing against plamo
>>
>>23949510
>go back to it later
I've had a bad experience with a gp02a my brother brought back from japan of all places. I was excited and snap built it but after a couple of months when I was ready to paint it, parts of it literally crumbled when I tried taking it apart.
Mind you, my room is a cave that only sees artificial light, and its behind glass all that time.
After that I sort of have a weird autism that a kit should be painted within a week of the plastic being exposed to oxygen.

>>23949510
Also experimenting with adding fleck to paint and using glossier paint for the post shading to make the texture a bit more interesting. Also leaving tiny imperfections that appear instead of correcting them. I think it adds some charm.

>>23949513
That's crazy. I painted a 3 year old ez8 that I had sitting in a room near a window a few weeks ago and had zero issues.
>>
Pic is the ez8 I did. I am very happy with how it came out and how little issues it had from age.
>>
>>23949443
Thanks, still wip, but should be done this week.
>>
>>23949514
It literally crumbled like a dehydrated candybar that melted and refrozen too many times.
>>
>>23949517
Whack. I've never had that happen to me. Maybe I'm just lucky or you're just really unlucky.
