-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

I mean working on main project and drawing line arts for others is basically that. You can only go so far with multitask, even youtubers with a part time job struggle with it, let alone the million dollar project manager.

What are the most essential things to start painting?
>>
>>23944844
paint
>>
>>23944844
Paint
Brushes (a wide, flat one for larger surfaces and one with a fine point for small details)
Water cup, assuming you're using water-based acrylics (rinse your brush regularly as you paint)
Palette (a simple plastic one is all you really need but a wet palette will be a huge upgrade)
Paper towel or napkin to wipe off excess moisture from your brush (depending on what you use you might get small fibers in your brush this way, you can avoid this with a microfiber towel instead)

Moved recently and want to get back into building, but I've got no idea how to handle my painting setup now. I'm a lacquerfag so I definitely don't want to do it indoors. In an apartment complex now and have a nice little patio area with an outlet so I could probably get a table and work there, but that's still outdoors and it's frequently rainy (not to mention humid) here.

Would I be able to get a collapsible fan hood or something similar? So I can have ventilation and not get griefed by the wind blowing pollen and shit on my wet paint? Never had an outdoors setup so I'm not sure what needs to be taken into account.

Primer is what helps paint adhere to your models. Sometimes it is referred to as a base coat as well. The color of primer you choose can influence the colors you paint on top of it. Painting just white over a black primer will be painful, for example.
A top coat/varnish protects the paint underneath it. There's different finishes depending on the look you want to go for. Matte is the most commonly used but there's really nothing stopping you from going with gloss or semi-gloss.

You can also put down a bunch of tiny dots of oil paint and then blend them together to simulate dust/grime/etc.

Does it replace the base coat or does it happen before or after it?

>>23944994
It depends on the look you're going for. You could do it over your primer layer or on top of a couple coats of the color you want and then do another layer(s) of that color. You wouldn't replace priming either way.
>>
>>23944994
Pre-shading, so after primer, before the main color. You can find some gunpla builders doing something similar with CMYK colors

Can you put topcoat (or any paint) on TPE if you let it cure without flexing the rubber?

paint will always flake and peel off in rubber. best way of dealing with it is to never play or move the rubber parts once it's painted.

The trick is to not sleep all the way.
>>
>>23945279
I set multiple alarms for myself in 15 minute intervals.
>>
>>23945279
I had sleep issues in hs and uni when I was always within walking distance of all of my classes, since I just let myself keep sleeping until the last second and stayed up late.
I fixed it when I started a new course that I actually had to drive for, so I was forced to wake up 1-2 hours before the classes actually started, and had to plan the time I went to sleep because of that.
Don't try to go cold turkey on a new sleep schedule, that'll unironically make you feel pretty shit and sickly. Instead you should try to work your way backwards 15 minutes at a time. So tomorrow morning, try to wake up at 11:45 instead of 12:00, which should be a pretty easy jump (and try your best to go to sleep around 2-3am).
If you still can't fix it, I would actually suggest talking to a doctor, since there's a real chance this is a medical issue. Disregard this advice if doctors are very expensive where you live.

How come redditors build like ten kits in a single month?
>inb4 they just snapshit
Even so, just cleaning the nubs, sanding, assembling and pannel lining takes me a fuckton of time. I must spend at least twelve hours snapshitting a single kit. Am I just slow?
>>
>>23945294
12 hours for something HG-sized sounds excessive, yeah. Might be they're just building smaller kits, or they're unemployed, or they just don't do much else in their free time.
>>
>>23945279
I have to set an alarm for early morning whenever I had to paint something since I don't like painting past noon. It takes getting used to but once you start painting it'll be fine. Your body will naturally cope with the new schedule.
>>
>>23945294
Before I retired and switched to working freelance, I used to get the snap build done in like 3 days. That includes c clip mods for joints, and basic glass file sanding. I did this by building gunpla for about 6 hrs a day (1 hr lunch, 1 hr actually working). I actually developed a way to keep building during zoom calls by angling my camera in such a way that I looked like I'm typing on my keyboard when I'm actually messing with my pla.
I even tried sneaking away to paint, but people pointed out that I had a respirator shaped mark on my face and it gave the game away.

But yeah, being contractually obligated to being available to answer an email or slack message within a minutes notice got me into building lots of pla while waiting out my shift was a real motivator. I actually started building a backlog like crazy now that I only work a week a month (for real actual 4 hr shifts), My dayjob almost noticed because the runner clippings would fall into my work laptop and it would jam up and I'd ask IT too take it away and clean it up everyfew months.

Yeah but those are just big statues and aren't representative of what an actual war machine would be going through. That's why I always reference tanks and jets out in the field/crashed/parked in some graveyard. They are the closest we will get to accurate weather details.

To clarify your statement so the other (>>23945549) anon isn't confused; the Bandai kit only comes with two yellow beam saber blades while the Daban kit added another two for all four beam saber handles. Otherwise the kits are identical. There are no missing "arms," just effect parts.

>>
>>23946661
HGUC Nightingale isn't actually much of a static brick. It's quite posable actually, you can do a lot of dynamic displays with it. The legs are hindered by design but that's honestly all that holds it back. Great kit really. Can't say the same for the RE100, it is definitely a big awkward brick.
>>
>>23946663
Anon, you can squeeze whatever the articulation it has and 90% of it's body still looks the same as the default standing pose because Nightingale is just a fat fuck. You would be a Kyokai Senki fan because those kits have some of the best articulation Bandai has to offer.
>>
Why did you let it die, Articulation Bros?!
>>
uh oh someone is having a melty.
>>
>>23946664
not really though. The mobility of the binders and being able to reproduce the storage state makes for a lot of silhouette changing, and it's articulate enough to do stuff like two handing the rifle and having shoulder first shooting poses etc
It also helps it has no problem supporting the rifle or anything it comes with so you can really put it in quite a bunch of poses.
>>
Uh oh someone is articulating his anus
>>
>>23946574
>Too bad it's like $500
what do you mean? poopla is only a couple bucks
>>
>>23946669
>The mobility of the binders and being able to reproduce the storage state makes for a lot of silhouette changing, and it's articulate enough to do stuff like two handing the rifle and having shoulder first shooting poses etc
Whatever, the skirt, big ass and legs always look unchanging no matter the pose. Same with tank models honestly, you rotate the gun, open some doors and they have articulated track but does that really matter? Still a brick.
>>
>>23946676
the skirts can pose and are designed to do so a decent bit with the subarms, and the legs are capable of holding a good amount of spread poses etc
I'm not saying it can do yoga poses but you know what poses worse than it? the MG V2 and a whole bunch of other kits in my collection. Old HGs are kinda cheating but shit it poses pretty similar to the actual HG Sazabi. It just isn't particularly immobile and is a bad example, the RE100 is a great example but the HG is pretty impressive in squeezing out just about all the design could reasonably do.
>>
>>23946661
thanks for reminding me this is in stock actually
>>
>>23946669
Majority of older HG are being refered to as bricks due to their limited articulation inspite of their articulated pauldrons and completely free arm motion. Even Ma.K's MK44 - the most famous brick here, has articulated facemask, articulated arm and waist rotation.
>>
>>23946685
idk what you're really trying to explain here but I don't need your explanation on what a brick is
only thing I'm saying here in any of this is the HGUC Nightingale is surprisingly well constructed and articulate contrary to what it may seem for the design
plenty of kits have far worse with even less crazy designs
fwiw I can compare the RE100, B-Club 1/100 and HGUC Nightingales personally (I gave away my RE100 one though) so I'm pretty decently experienced with this specific design and its particulars. The HGUC is impressive for what the design is, that's it.
>>
>>23946495
Il keep that in mind for my next diorama
>>
Plamor demands new blood
>>
>>23946674
Never understood why the 2-3 of you hate GTM so much
>>
>>23946687
Is it impressive? Yes. Is it a brick? Yes. The free arm motion and articulated binders were achieved in like, 1990. It needs a landing gear for it's ass because the back skirt doesn't move lmao
>>
>>23946697
nta and I rarely speak up about it because who cares like whatever you want really but personally I think they just look awful
it really just blows my mind how much of a regression they feel like to me, I think above all else the arms ruin any attempt at them being kinda cool to me. Those elbows make them look so stupid.
anyway that's my jayz2cents.
>>
>>23946495
So in your example diorama the tanks have displaced the correct amount of dirt to match references. The Zaku has displaced LESS with no trail of movement. He spawned in there, at x=0 height, compressed a little soil, and has not moved despite the ongoings. He didn't walk or land there. He didn't slide during a thrust.

>>23946485
So start with what happened, what was it fighting and what destroyed his leg. What is the impact from the fall like. Look at reference pictures. Plenty exist for what things look like after impact and years later. Things get rounded over, young trees sprout up. The impacts and deformation to the land remains even if obscured a little. Your terrain learning is very good for a first attempt but the storytelling behind it is what wins awards.
>>
>>23946698
It's pretty demonstrably not if you own the kit. The back skirt isn't supposed to move, they coulda made it move if they wanted but I don't even understand the point. Yup it has a big ass. It doesn't "need" the landing gear for anything because it actually can support the weight, the landing gear helps but you can absolutely go without it. You can also use the fuel tanks as landing gear on the inside too if you want since they are articulated, rather pointlessly honestly but pretty useful for this if it's your tism to not have landing gear but still get support. Course back skirts not moving is actually pretty widespread across lots of designs and kits overall, from Gundams to Gelgoogs, but idk I guess it's important here for some reason just cus it's a big butt? I dunno, works fine to me man. Personally I keep mine in a kinda boring aura farming pose but I know if I was interested in rigging up the action bases to support it properly I could put it in some particularly wild ones because it supports it.

There's all sorts of designs out there that don't have MG kits, or desperately need a 2.0, like the Guncannon, Zeong, Qubeley, GM III, Kampfer, the entire 0083 lineup, and so on. But Bandai works in stupid and inconsistent ways, so there's no telling if/when any of that will ever happen. Hell, for how CCA was considered the magnum opus of Gundam for so long, there was literally an entire decade gap between the original MG ReGZ and the Nu Ver. Ka.

>>
>>23947076
i may have missed it, but IIRC the latest polls were only for the MG reprints and the currently running p-bandai one.
>>
>>23947091
They were subpar kits as you would expect of the Unicorn's predictable issues, but your assessment sounds like a reddit snapshitter.
>>
>>23946903
I've always had a theory the reason they refuse to make some MG kits like the Geara Zulu is because it would open them up to being pressured to make related kits like the Zee Zulu, Geara Zulu Guards Type, Geara Zulu Angelo Sauper Custom, Rozen Zulu, etc.

If post-2018 Bandai is anything, it's that they want to make a lot of money, but not do any real work or take any risks. Number go up infinitely and forever without effecting bottom line. So the best we're getting is probably 1.5's like the Doms, unofficial 1.5's like the P-Bandai Re-GZ's, Ver. Ka. updates of already existing kits. Now from the looks of things we're at least starting to get reprints of older kits again, but that took Bandai making a second factory to do so.

It's kind of grim.

NTA but some people do multistep approach to each and every single nub - cutting in 2-3 cuts with single blade after cutting off part out of runner with normal nippers, level with metal file, apply 3 grades of sanding paper and finish with glass file.

Compare that to people who just cut once from spure, cut once with single blade close to part and level with knife, calling it done.

You can see my very well integrated solution for the funnels here. After I took this it slipped backwards on the photo booth, yet the funnels stayed together besides the first one (and the tape held on).
Also I forgot in the previous post the other issue - being retarded and using a Gundam marker for panel lining the shins. Forgot that it only cleans off with iso which also affects the top coat. Did what I could, but it didn't turn out great.

Overall I really enjoyed this build. Was a ton of parts to paint, but got it done in a reasonable amount of time even with the GGX White (and the gray mix) taking a week to dry fully (it was dry to the touch in the usual amount of time, just acrylic like fragile). The gray coming out darker than intended was also a nice happy accident. Love how it breaks up the panels so much.

It depends on the pigments Bandai is using to color the plastic.
Many white pigments are UV reactive, same with orange/yellow. Lots of their clear pigments also are UV reactive, besides annoyingly the standard pink beam saber (outside of the new GQUX ones).

Alright I might make an amazon.co.jp account if it will ship to Canada.
How big will the shipping be if I want to also order some plastics from Japan as well?

Where else can I ask for an acrylic close enough alternative to the LOGH Mr.Hobby paints if the places here won't yield results? I don't want to spam here to the annoyance of others.

Looking at the colors in that line, they all seem to be pretty generic military hues that are not difficult to find. Tamiya and Vallejo both have tons, Mr Hobby has the acrysion line which seems to have similar tones as well

Tamiya's XF series in particular seems to have a lot of similar kinds of color

Thanks!
I did a bit of searching and found something called "paint vault."
It has a lot of hobby paint brands. Is it a reliable tool for finding close approximates?
Just wondering if anybody has experience with the site and is able to say whether it is reliable or not.

I was watching JL gunpla and he used panel liner to test his rescribes before priming. I know he can get away with it because he works with resin, but its complete suicide for plastic. What can I use to safely do the same thing for regular HG kits. Watercolor maybe?
