Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?

Build a kit featuring any brand of Girlpla, including but not limited to:
>Frame Arms Girl
>Megami Device
>30 Minute Sisters/Missions/Etc.
>Figure-Rise Standard
>Megalomaria
Additionally, any "Feminine" mechs like the Nobel Gundam or Valsione are fair game as well. What you do with your build in terms of theming is up to you so long as your base is "Feminine".

Should I get the Moderoid Ingram or the RG
>>
>>23968778
Moderoid if you want more than just an Ingram down the line in the same scale, otherwise RG.
>>
>>23968783
The truck and support car would be nice to have, but it's a bit expensive... is it that much fun to have in-hand? Or could I live without it?
>>
What airbrush paints to you recommend?

I've heard that premixed laquer is noticably better than thinning your own acrylic
>>
>>23968810
Definitely not Army Painter - those aren't even worth handpainting.
Thinned lacquer, with Mr.Hobby and Tamiya probably being the easiest to get, is the way to go.
>>
>>23968810
If you have active ventilation of some sort, Tamiya paints are very easy to use, rarely clogs and have good reputation overall. If you have limited ways to ventilate and can only place cardboard box on desk and that's it - waterbased acrylics like Vallejo or AK (despite their reputation of new formula for brush use, I found out nu-Vallejo to be surprisingly good for airbrush use with proper thinning). Others are either too expensive for that use or garbage (like Army Painter - holy shit, these dudes own their success solely to their PR department that made tons of newcomers pick up their paints instead of others).

>lacquer is better
Yes and no. Yes, because it will produce very smooth and mechanically resistant surface, it's own thinner is aggressive enough to melt any leftovers inside airbrush so they basically never clogs as each new spray auto-clean the needle. No, because they are toxic shit that WILL fuck you up unless you take proper protective steps like full active ventilation system, spray booth, both anti-dust and anti-chemical mask with good quality filters. Preferably with all of these located in basement or other separate room. Some people say "fuck this shit" and spray waterbased acrylics anyway. Nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>23968816
their original formula was legitimately some of the worst paint I've used in my life. apparently the new formula is better but I haven't tried
>>
>>23968450
>Yeah, you can use modeling skills to make a shit kit better, but it's still a shit kit at a baseline.
Literally none of Gaikotsu's reviewed kit fall into the shit category, even the old floppy RGs. A real shit kit has warped parts that required to be either heated up or padded with putty. Gaikotsu never have to deal with that shit so his reviews just come out as juvenille and uninformative.

hasegawas are okay, but they're very basic. both 80s and later second gen kits.
Better off with 1/48 Harrier 2 family by them (despite what that sperg might say goes together fine), or uma model if you like bandai tier panel lining.

Lol you can literally put anything together when it deals with glue. Harrier II Plus's problem is the warped main body of the fighter. Yes it goes together fine but you have to make it look good.

Hasegawa made a 1/72 version too. Probably cheap since the 1/48 is not that expensive to begin with.
>Better off with 1/48 Harrier 2 family
The 1/48 is huge compares to GSC Gorg, did you read his post?
>>
>>23968931
All the 30 minutes stuff is cross compatible. It's the whole point of the brand.
>>
>>23968936
>Harrier II Plus's problem is the warped main body of the fighter
None of my copies including the recent reissue have this issue. Only legitimate complaints is the panel lining being shallow and engineering around fan and intakes will punish you if you don't slot it in correctly.
>>
>>23968988
That's really cool. Hope they end up doing Megaman stuff at some point then. Cause it'd be basically having access to extra armors for X.
>>
>>23968989
I have no problem with the propeller. It is the main body the problem.
>>
>>23968993
Bandai will morely to make FRS for Megaman rather than 30MF if the franchise is ever on their mind.
>>
>>23968931
Woaaah I never knew that either! Wow bandai makes wonders! Sheeeeeeeeesh
>>
>>23968931
You’re a little late to the party anon
>>
>>23968993
That would be pretty cool. I think the 30MF stuff is more or less the same size as kotobukiyas megaman models. I bet you could get them to work together with a little bit of work.
>>
>>23968810
Army painter is meant for hand brushing and it's absolute dogshit in an airbrush. It doesn't spray well and it clogs up the airbrush like hell.
If you really want water-based acrylics, Vallejo are pretty decent (though it still tends to clog easily, that's just how water-based paints are).
If you have some decent ventilation (large open window + fan), solvent-based acrylics like Tamiya are an excellent choice. This is a great middle-ground between shitty water-based acrylics and lacquer.
If you want to invest time, money, and space into the proper precautions needed for lacquer, definitely go for that.

Apart from having a wimpy backpack that feels like a downgrade from other grassley stuff I love this design, especially when it gets the lance. Really balances out the mega buster arm.
Only thing that I'm not so big on are the Grassley hip blocks, they look pretty bad when you rotate the thighs and the glowy translucent plastic bits don't move with them. That bugs me a bunch trying to find dynamic displays.

Speaking of WfM, I'm thinking about doing a set of customs with WfM kits, each one based on one of the main 6 from my little pony. Which kits would you view more as each pony color scheme?
I think aerial would make a good rainbow dash, and michaelis would be rarity. Unsure about the others though
>>
>>23969038
They're just easier to get good results with than tamiyas. Also there's a lot more color options with it.

>>23969047

>>
>>23968931
that's the whole point
they're cross-compatible designs based around 3.0mm holes
hence 30MM and variations, the name is (like fucking every other title in Japanese) a bunch of wordplay.

Calibarn is just the best design from WfM and might be my favorite MS design period

Pullin out the fucking broom is the most fucking based choice, I love everything about it but that took it to the next level. It's handled perfectly too, it isn't super robot goofy, it just manages to actually make a witch broom cannon feel pretty reasonable
Even though I'm not as big on IBO I really like how G-Self, Barbatos and Calibarn all significantly standout amongst gundam lineups. Calibarn probably the least in overall form but the details make it.

How reliable is a cheap ultrasonic cleaner + soap and maybe some thinner or IPA at stripping fully cured acrylic paint? someone offered me several second hand kits mostly in good condition without damage and full accessories but they are poorly painted
>>
>>23969118
It'll strip the paint pretty well. I've done it plenty of time. You'll still need to do some work but it'll do the large majority.
If you're gonna fill it with alcohol make sure to never use the heater most cleaners come with. Alcohol is very dangerous when it's hot.
I would actually suggest finding a commercial cleaner that will strip the paint because they aren't flammable.
>>
>>23969118
See if you can find a cleaning solution called LAs Totally Awesome. Its the best way ive found to strip paint
>>
>>23969118
you don't need an ultrasonic cleaner to strip them especially if it's just acrylic paint, but it'll do it, unnecessary purchase if you don't have it already though
>>
>>23969047
>didn't get FM100s
I'd rather they just get a straight MG instead of getting padded by FM.
>>
>>23969129
I'm extremely happy with modern FM/RE100s so I don't really care too much it's just odd they only made the Aerial, not even Rebuild or Lfrith or anything else at all
MGs don't offer all that much I care about for these designs, MGEX Calibarn maybe but then it's gonna cost what an entire line of FM100s would to buy for me so idk
>>
>>23969127
Yeah it is cheap but i dont want making unnecessary tool purchase, so is IPA for several days in air proof container + some shaking and later toothbrush are good enough?
>>
>>23969162
IPA and a toothbrush will annihilate 99% of paintjobs yeah. Acrylic should come off pretty easily. I'd start with taking them apart into at least components if not entirely and testing what you need to do to clean one part, it might be anywhere from touching IPA starts to flake it to needs to sit for a few minutes to needs to sit for an hour and get hit with some real scrubbing, kinda depends how thick it's on, but acrylic will usually start coming up pretty quickly with any agitation even with low percentage IPA
>>
>>23969173
IPA should be harmless to plastic iirc? and can you reuse the IPA again by filtering the waste and flakes?
>>
>>23969052
>Absolute bullshit. I want a 1/100 calibarn so bad.
At this rate we'll probably see a 1/100 Cali from chinks before Bandai does one.
>>
>>23969118
Ultrasonic cleaners heat up during operation and there's a risk of explosion/fire if you use them with flammable solvents.
>>
>>23969184
yes IPA is fine on plastic
I've never filtered and tried to reuse it so I dunno but chances are you aren't really going to need to use that much
>>
>>23969184
If you are worried, you can just spray IPA, wait few seconds and start scrubbing. Paint should reactive already but IPA evaporates quickly, before it can harm the plastic.
>>
>>23969185
Only problem with a 1/100 Calibarn from the chinese is that it will be greebled to hell.

interested in getting into actually painting my kits but my issue is i'd only really have the ability to sponge paint, is it worth it at that point?
saw a vid linked here a few threads ago of a JP guy doing a customer Messer sponge painted and it looked pretty nice
only issue is i dont own any paints yet, they used mr hobby aqueous in that video, would that be my best bet?
also thinking of testing on either the Gerbera-Tetra or Darilbalde, i like the red but i think making them two tones of red like RG's are would be nice to slightly break it up, what two reds would work nicely and how would (You) go about choosing which part gets which color?

Aqueous is also pretty thick out of the jar. For brush painting I suggest mr.color levelling thinner. Water works, technically, but it works worse. Aqueous hobby color thinner is also nice but I prefer the levelling thinner for brush painting.
The big issue with water thinning these paints is that it can cause beading, it sticks worse and it dries worse.
Another option is vallejo airbrush thinner. It works shockingly well with aqueous hobby color and tamiya and it's non toxic.

I don't think that's ever said anywhere but even if it was there'd still be spare parts and schematics to build more if necessary. Which a post-OYW Federation would definitely do if/when they went to war with Zeon again in the future.

Nobody gives a flying fuck about the setting of the actual show when building model kits. It's been a thing longer than you've been alive, when MSV, which is quite literally fanfiction by Okawara and Stream Base, shit all over the setting of the original series. But of course, retards always have to single out GQ because of "new thing bad" syndrome.
>However, the RX-77-4 Guncannon II in the lower right is based on a setting that makes you think, "no matter how you look at it, a machine like this couldn't possibly have existed." Furthermore, the back cover of the March 1983 issue of Mokei Joho featured a design drawing of a machine called Dozle's Zaku. The basic rule for MSV was "avoid contact with characters who appear in the main Gundam series," but it became clear that even this definition was beginning to waver.

Using water or any other "emulsion/waterbased" thinners also removes any advantages those paints have over actual waterbased based.

I wish I saw this post two days ago so I could offer some clarity and a semi definitive answer on that anons fears, but,

Tariffs will most likely not have an impact upon availability of gunpla into the states. Will they make them more expensive? Yes, will they dissapear overnight? No. If it happens, it will be telegraphed, you will see signs.

July 7th consumer product safety commission toy crackdown? This change again is unlikely to affect the availability of Gunpla model kits at a commercial scale at least. As far as I can understand the safety standards and testing only apply to kits with age ratings on the packaging below 13/15? Master grades, perfect grades, Real Grades should not need any further testing or face any logsitic obstacles.

However, High Grades, Non MGSD, SD kits, and anything with age rating of below 13+ plus will be subject to these logistical obstacles of tests. But thats something bandai should be able to handle the cost of.

>The CPSC requires that you establish a periodic testing program to test your product every 1, 2 or 3 years.
Lol Lmao.

I haven't done any concrete research but I think all gunpla kits are imported directly into the country in bulk by the pallet load from Bandai Japan to their own company in the US Blue fin I think, who handles fulfillment of Pbandai orders, wholesale fulfillment to retailers, and other aspects of the gunpla divison in the states.

The testing paperwork that bandai will get for things like HG, Standard SD model kits, and other 13 under rated is not made public. If you try to buy these from Japan and have them shipped to you. Customs might destroy it.

Master, real, MGSD, maybe some SMP kits MIGHT be safe with the fact they have for 15+ on their packaging ordering directly from japan but I have no first-hand experience.
>>
>>23972383
The first sign of Gunpla becoming harder to get in the states will be Premium Bandai slowing down putting up listings, whether it's falling behind on the japan version on new kits or represses.

When it comes to things winding down, it's always direct customer sales services winding down/being affected before it hits retail/wholesale services.
>>
>>23972384
I yearn for the return of the 2016~2019 days. That was peak Gunpla. No PB storefront, but didn't matter if you had a job.
>>
Takara Tomy somehow made a Hi-Res Blade Liger that is worse than the HMM
>>
>>23972390
I don't think you fully understand that Premium bandai going down will be a warning sign of bandai preparing to divest from the states.

If Bandai pull out of the states, those premium bandai kits do not become retail kits, retail HG, SD kits cannot be brought into the states unless those tests are done. It won't matter if you have a job or how much money you have, well except if your going to fly to japan to buy them or cover the testing costs.

But thats besides the point. HG, SDs and more will become extinct in the US.

Going to try my hand at weathering a kit tomorrow as the humidity is finally falling to around 60% compared to the usual 80%+ so I can topcoat
Given I'm going to use all of them, I would topcoat, use mr weathering color, then do chipping/those weathering powder palettes then topcoat again?
I just have some Tamiya acrylic black and aluminium for chipping, I don't need to thin those beforehand if I'm doing the sponge/toothpick method do I?

I finding odd with Bandai distribution system, three SEA countries (Philippines, Malaysia & Thailand) that have access to P-Bandai is via third party shopping platform Shopee but Singapore have their own P-Bandai official site. The shipments that was bought via Shopee was shipped from distribution hub in Hong Kong. So why Bandai limit themselves to other countries? Why can't Bandai let Canada & Mexico access to P-Bandai and have it shipped from US distribution hub, same goes with Europe region by setting up distribution hub in one of the Euro countries? Hell, Indonesia left out from P-Bandai considering they also have Shopee although interesting enough Shopee is a Singaporean company that reached most the SEA countries as well LatAm (Mexico, Brazil & Argentina).

It's Heisei era boomers and gen x'ers (or the Japanese equivalent). People so traumatized by the rolling economic collapse and stagnation that Japan has been experiencing for 35+ years that they're risk adverse while simultaneously trying to recapture the long dead soul of the Japanese market that existed during their childhood and early adult life in the 80's.

As a result we get shitpla, flashy super robots, and Gundam: bionicles. Things that would have been seen as hilarious and whimsical to Japanese kids in the 80's but are ignored now. Meanwhile they make cuts to their more successful lines as cost cutting measures out of fear of that number decreasing and flashbacks to the collapse of 1990.

abstaining from purchase is a better way to vote with your dollar than directly undermining a given industry by supporting IP theft. buy as many unique chinese kits as are available, but buying KOs is shooting yourself in the foot long term if you actually like the japanese franchises the kits come from. if you don't like gundam as a series/product line at all (or gundam designs) that's a different issue.

No, not everything, Build Fighters is actually quite fun.
>>
>>23973233
>well bootleggers are a problem because Bandai keeps fucking up
nah, bootleggers are a problem because there is zero enforcement in china, and renting manufacturing capacity in government-subsidized facilities is incredibly cheap.
many people disliked daban, but weren't loud about it because the rate they were able to copy kits was much slower and the quality issues were more apparent. with changes in 3D scanning and rapid prototyping technologies, the bootleggers can move much faster with more accuracy than before, and the CCP is driving a much larger push on manufacturing facility subsidies as they were prior to undermine foreign markets while increasing capacity.
>>23973235
08th sucks
stardust memory is lazy top gun in space (most realistic depiction of a woman in media though)
unicorn is just fanwank
hathaway is ok, but needs context of other series
CCA needs 0079 and zeta for context
00 is decent for the first season, second suffers a bit
Turn A is probably the best thing in the franchise.
>>
>>23973188
>there are no indicationa that 30M lines sells poorly or are not popular.
Japan retail don't put discount on the kits unless it is something they want to be gone.
>>
>>23973243
this is generally true, but what's the context?
different stores may have different sales based on the local population's buying habits. without hard sales figures extrapolating sales via a few anecdotal pictures isn't always guaranteed to be a good indicator of overall demand, although it can be.
>>
>>23973233

That said, I am not giving chang any of my plamo money outside a few Meng and Takom kits.

I knew Amuro had a ton of stickers but holy shit. Even with two sticker sheets for a small HG there's a ton of color correction needed, namely the white upper rail/grips on rifle, blue/yellow details on shield, black/yellow details on the cuffs, and pretty much every detail on the backpack that isn't the red stripe.

Doesn't like to stand. Posing is decent except for hips, the legs can only really pivot front/back and outward.

>>
Seeing the gazillion chang upscales and how well they sell makes me wonder why bandai never thought about doing that. Hell, the more I think about this company the less it makes sense. Why not use the new frames from the recent MG/HG Barbatos on 2.0 versions of the IBO suits that share them? Why not lauch a MG Calibarn since that's pretty much a guaranteed success? Why not make new versions of popular mobile suits that suffer from being early RGs such as the Zaku? Why rush a RG Exia repair IV with the same issues as the original one just to get mogged by a chinese bootleg that costs one third of its price?
>>
>>23973762
Seeing the success Bandai will pick the absolute worst HGs to make up-scales of, make them 3x the price of said HG, and make them pbandai exclusive.

The psycommu unit in the Gundam QuuuuuuX contains a fragment of the Nu Gundam's psycoframe, which fell into another universe after Axis Shock during CCA. Because just straight making them go up magnifies problems with the design that aren't as visible previously. There has to be more adjustments made. For example the RX-78-2 2.0's head looks absolutely garbage when you blow it up to 1/100 scale, and the Sazabi RG that just came out its chest area is too thin.

Better yet, he should beat Bandai to the punch in making a kit of this Fedora tipping motherfucker.

In terms of Late-UC, all Bandai seems to care about is the first four Crossbones (which are essentially palette swaps of each other with minor differences in accessories) and the F90 with its bazillion mission packs.

I just said ball joints are fine til they have to support a lot of weight
pretty much any leg joint is fine for supporting directly vertical weight, the problem comes from supporting the weight of components
See: Penelope and original Gustav Karl, both kits whose hip ball joints couldn't keep up with the weight of the legs
>>
Every leg should be a ball joint.
Every knee should do 90º.
Every elbow should do 90º.
No ab crunch.
No butterfly joint.

With every release we stray further from the light.

IDK, I guess less regulation and more freedom could be a thing, but would the chinese really pay them more?
>>
>>23974211
but we're talking about some anklelet from the 90's
and besides nothing could save the Penelope's legs other than ratchet joints which Bandai never figured out how to do
>>
>>23974205
Thats more associated with MS joints frame being shit in general rather than ball joint specifically
>>
>>23974214
Bandai used to make Gunpla in China. Maybe still does. It's from some SD line. Maybe boss Zhang just offered a better pay or something.
>>
>>23974210
Hips balljoints work better with ABS and POK. Bandai's KPS tends to wear off pretty fast.
>>
>>23974215
Leopard is a modern release the 90s have nothing to do with it
Penelope's legs work fine on peg and socket joints. Xi's legs don't carry quite as much weight as Penelope's but they work fine for transplants.

See also Alyzeus, which shifted to a peg-and-socket, and can manipulate its legs better than Penelope.

I got one to replace a shitty airbrush. It's nice for paints you mix a lot of because you can fill the bottle and swap it to next one without any worries. I use it for priming and clear coats and swap to another airbrush for ready made stuff I'll only use a bit of at a time. I'm treating the needles as reusable without much issue so far. Lining up the needle with the airbrush correctly will greatly impact your results as you can adjust the height of the bottle/needle and it's horizontal positioning. Get extra bottles and needles so you don't get stuck trying to decide what to put in each one.

I feel pretty confident we'll get some cool action with Penelope losing its armour across the fight. The final fight is supposed to be pretty long, it runs for multiple chapters and is definitely the most substantial battle of the whole trilogy. If it doesn't end as at least mostly-Odysseus I'd be really surprised.

They might also do some new light armour arrangement, that's a little more how it's described in the novels.

The old timey gunpla painting had lighting and shadow airbrushing too. However it fell out of fashion for some reason and most of gunpla modelers nowadays would rather use pla plates, scribing and multi toning instead.

No, the way these work is that they're blind boxes but for the 3 they always put in the silhouette. So you're always guaranteed, in this case, the Banshee the Spartan and the Quan, but you also get 4 other kits you have no idea about. They're standard across every order, though, so everyone gets the same stuff. It's a way for them to get rid of overstock.

why are there so many vallejo lines...
what's the best for gunpla? model, color or mecha? i'll be brush painting not airbrushing if that matters

>>
>>23975107
I've used Model and Game Color. I think their Mecha line is pre-thinned for airbrushing but I've never tried it. Some of their Game Color bottles have been weird for me and I needed to use a tattoo ink shaker to get good results with them.
>>
>>23975107
Brush painting is kinda paint in the ass for gunpla, there's a somewhat steeper learning curve if you want to get very nice clean consistent paint job for those big flat surface even with a flat brush.
>>
>>23975113
they do paint?
>>23975116
gotcha, i did read a random blogpost there and they were saying the Mecha line isnt the best, especially since its more satin and thats harder for brush painting? i have no clue but in that case maybe Model might be the best
>>23975118
unfortunately i've no way to airbrush so brush painting is my only option really but i'm willing to learn!
>>
>>23975107
Mecha color is their best paint but it's way too sticky for brush painting without a lot of retarder added. Their normal model color is great to brush paint with but you absolutely need to clear coat it. It's fragile. In general water based paints have a lot of cons you just need to accept in exchange for them being non-toxic.

>>23975116
>I think their Mecha line is pre-thinned for airbrushing
You should still thin it.
>>
>>23975123
i tend to use the mecha color for airbrushing quite often and i find that it can be handbrushed decently. funnily enough its consistency out of the bottle works decently for handbrushing but it's still too thick for use in an airbrush. model and game color would probably be better choices for pure handbrushing though, they should be much easier to come by and have a larger range of colors compared to the mecha line.

>need to clear coat
i've only topcoated a few times since humidity here is pretty high so i dont get a lot of chances but saw Vallejo do their own, do you have any experience with them or would i be better off sticking to mr hobby cans?
>>
>>23975128
Mr.hobby cans will provide a much more solid clearcoat than vallejos stuff will. I've used it though and it's pretty good. There's no such with as a good water based gloss but their matte is pretty easy to use.
I would say keep using the mr.super clear cans just because it's easier, faster and gives a better finish.
>>
>>23975128
handbrushing clear coats is torture, just stick to the cans.
>>
>>23975131
>>23975132

>>
>>23975133

>>
>>23975133
Honestly if you're completely new to painting, you're better off trying with rattle cans first. It's the most straightforward and no frill. You can just do it outdoors with some cardboard to block the paint spray. Hand painting needs you to really have a good grasp of paint thinning ratio and good brush control.
>>
>>23975138
Rattle cans are just gonna put him off from learning those things for even longer
>>
all the poor people in my country use these shitty local rattle cans. the results are really good tbqh
>>
>>23975141
I started with rattle cans, found airbrush too intimidating, thought I'll just go with paintbrush cuz cheaper in the long run, end up almost hating painting gunpla because it really takes a lot more to learn how to get consistent paint job, went fuck it and got airbrush and it's all smooth-sailing now. Now I only use paintbrush for details.

>>23975133
Just for the record, I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, but well, it's gonna be kind of an uphill battle imo, so be prepared I guess.
>>
>>23975142
I tried those when I was starting out. Can sometimes get orange peel, never had that issue with 'proper' ones for plamo/ hobby use like tamiya or mr hobby.

Do brush painters here paint it while assembled like in the video or each piece individually? While assembled looks like it could save a lot of time but I'm sure that has it's downsides too?

Acrylics is fine, just that they chip easily. I started off with acrylics as well because of the no toxic fumes thing so it's easy to paint in my room, but it's just a hassle with how fragile the paint can get near movable bits and friction.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CDuLDHZ73E
is this true?
>>
>>23975211
Lacquer isn't really safe from chipping either, unless I'm just retarded. It's definitely more hardy but still takes very little effort to scratch off. Anything matte especially will shred itself very easily
>>
>>23975215
Never really had any issue with lacquer unless I deliberately actually scratch it. Meanwhile acrylic bits fall off just from me putting the part into a joint and causing it to rub against another part.
