-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

Is Citadel Chaos Black the best spray primer to get for hand painting?
>>
>>23975553
The origin MG is actually very nice to build. The lack of core block makes it pose great too.
>>
>>23975533
c'mon I want to do silly build soon
>>
>>23975556
Any rattlecan you use for airbrush priming (heh) is also good for brush paint. Citadel is overpriced, all hobby brand matt black primer cans are good. Even testors or other (cheap) hardware store primer will do bit test those first on some spoons.
>>
>>23975556
No, Citadel stuff is overpriced. Army Painter, at the other hand, is shitty. For spray cans: either Vallejo or AK, if you want it to be acrylic, Tamiya if you don't mind lacquer since you would spray it outside anyway. For airbrush use, Vallejo Mecha Color if you want to stay within waterbased acrylics territory or Mr Hobby if you have spray booth and mask and don't have to worry about fumes.
>>

>>23975556
Fuck no, Citadel primers blow chunks. Their Wraithbone is easily the worst spray primer I've ever used. I strongly recommend the Colour Forge line if you can find it in your area, they have good color variety matched to Citadel paints and spray well after 1-2 coats. The bone white here is their Wightbone for example.
>>
>>23975556
Citidel sucks ass, The best brush paint primer is vallejo mecha black with a lot of retarder added.
>>
>>23975556

>>23975560
>>23975563
>>23975564
Thanks, looks like I can get the AK & Colour Forge options so will probably get one of those! Usually pretty restricted in options since I'd need to get it shipped and shipping aerosols have a bunch of restrictions
>>23975571
Can't find that they do a spray primer, or at least one that's available to me, and i've heard brush painting primer is a pain/waste of time?
>>
File: casv.jpg (1.12 MB, 981x2181)
1.12 MB JPG
I might pepper around the shades of pink and red some more since the 3.0 has a ton of parts separation but I think this is more or less what I am going to do.

>>23975573
The mecha primer just needs retarder added to make it work good on a brush. I've used a ton of the stuff. You just put it on wet and let it take its time drying and it'll come out perfect. The vallejo premium color retarder is what I always used. Always around a 15% retarder and 35% thinner and 50% primer. It's supposed to dry slowly.
>>

>>
>>23975579
I've built one before when I was a new builder and I remember hating it. It clearly didn't filter me if I'm building another years later you doofus.
>>
>>23975576
Oh interesting, will definitely look into that! Weather here can be pretty ass so brush painting it sounds a bit handier but just from what I'd heard it's very annoying to do. Thinner for that would just be water as with Vallejo paints right?
>>
>>23975556
get Mr Hobby Aqueous cans
>>
>>23975582
Their airbrush thinner is a lot nicer to use than water. Water makes it want to bead up. The airbrush thinner has some kind of surfactant added to it to help it stay flat. You can get a pretty big bottle of the thinner on amazon for a good price.
There's very little difference between airbrush and brush products. Brush thinners just make paint dry slower so that it has time to level out the brush strokes. It's why adding retarder is so important. It's like a cheat code to get a good flat finish.
>>
Waiting for HG Leopard Destroy announcement any day now...
>>
>>23975564
>eldar fag
But yee, citadel stuff is universally overpriced, along with most of gw's stuff. I've had good experiences with Army Painter though.
>>
>>23975573
Gogg was painted with Vallejo cans, they are good. For non hobby brand, the paint will stick it's a matte tof how thick the rattle paint is and how much pressure the can has. I have an fdm 3d printer and between print lines and pla sucking in some paint, I just use the most basic €3,50/can matt black or jay2cent grey primer.

To her close Sisters, Ingrid have soft and somewhat gentle side. But outside, the rest see mainly her "war" face - serious, emotionless and focused on the goal. Her combat equipment is adjusted for brutal, close combat engagement, allowing her to rapidly close the distance and deliver the killing blow. Multiple thrusters - massive main ones on the back, supported by additional on side and front of her legs - coupled with precise thrust control gives her unparalleled flight and movement capabilities. While her frame include massive ion canons mounted on her back and side, close range plasma shotgun, she often ditch those, leaving only dangling connection cable. Instead, she prefer melee weapons, including her signature, massive halberd. Like frightening crimson lighting, Ingrid is ready to strike whoever might threaten her friends, hard and true.

Lich Corpsnel Greer didn't have much luck with 87 so she's upgraded herself this time. She finds that organic matter conducts ether much better than metal, even blood iron. Most Corpsnels use organs intact, but Greer likes to also use the broken bits others leave behind. By integrating them into her limbs and weapons, she can multicast curses with her helping hands. Murder mechs are useful too as their cobalt cores make nice antibacterial plates that help preserve the organic bits. She's meticulous about her ether storage as they were hard to find and will be harder to replace. Their distracting size has helped in end many situations in her favor. Her hexed shotgun handles the rest of them.

A Nymph of the Alquand Church, Helvetia uses a flight type frame with a special lightened direct energy sniper cannon - VARS 3Q94, and a quad tubed missile system - MORAD 082, mounted on her frames backpack mounts. These weapons are perfect for hunting heretical nymphs whom have shown disloyalty to the Prime Church and Saint Eden, and for hunting Gardina special forces nymphs, or any whom might prove a threat to the Prime Church.
As a primary arm Helvetia favours her M24 'Klukai' assault rifle with a backup underbarrel launcher, its flexibility blending well with her rapid hit and run tactics.

After miserable attempts to further map the lower levels of the 'structure'. The SanJu Heavy Industry commissions a new exploration unit. Using the RYDIRA sister series, known for it's respectable adventuring prowess as the base. The new unit named RYD-068, is built with enhanced scouting, endurance, and offensive abilities.

After studying the data from the previous failed expedition. SanJu has come to the conclusion that a support unit is needed to aid the new exploration model. The CBM-948 a collapsible bike mech unit featuring a completely new transforming frame. Capable of switching in three modes, bike, mech, and exoframe to support it's sister unit. It was later given the green light to house an advanced AI to further improve it's support capabilities. 952 KB JPG
Developed in secret within Anaheim Electronics using captured Axis AMX-103 Hamma-Hammas and data from the prototype YAMS-132 Rozen Zulu, the Wicked Witch was designed to be a dedicated Newtype Defense for normal Earth Federation MS Forces. The enlarged head unit contained a powerful Psycho-Jammer using emitter vanes within the standardized thrusters on the hips and shoulder of the suit. The Psycho-Jammer blocked Psychommu waves of enemy Newtype suits in a sphere around the Wicked Witch. It's only offensive weapon was a large single barreled beam cannon in the palm of a cabled Incom unit forming its left arm as the suits generator couldn't power much more once the Psycho Jammer was in use. The optional "broom" was an additional Psycho Jammer with its own generator giving extra range but a narrower field of effect, useful for enemy newtypes at a distance.
The addition of the Wicked Witch to a Federation MS squad dramatically improved the odds of surviving enemy Newtype Super-weapons.

File: 12 - Kaplayt.jpg (425 KB, 1200x3000)
425 KB JPG
Once a decorated and renowned soldier of an experimental force, gone AWOL after a disaster invoving her arm malfunctioning. Kaplayt is a rogue, roaming the wastes alone.

At least... that's what she tells everyone. Kaplayt's true origin is known only to her, and it's debatable if she even knows. Rumor has it she suffers from grand delusions, or some form of degenerative psychosis. Some attribute it to her crude biotech arm; that it drains so much blood from her brain that she can't think straight. Others think Kaplayt always had a screw loose, and her obtaining such a weapon only added another chapter to her bizzare mentality.

Whatever the case, it's rare you'll ever see Kaplayt actually utilize her monstrous mechanical limb. She's usually timid and standoffish, always speaking of hiding or being hunted. If you're unlucky, she'll accuse you of seeking her out, and go on the defensive. It's... unclear how her mechanized appendage actually works. How she's able to lug it around with such ease or produce such explosive force to attack with. It even displays a limited ability to transform for more specialized use, though Kaplayt herself doesn't seem fond of this mechanic...

https://forms.gle/pZiADc661Mp5KNU99

Next month marks the 10 year anniversary of the first-ever Groupbuild that I hosted here on /m/. In place of the usual security question, I've instead added a form where people can share their thoughts on the Groupbuilds, be it good or bad. I've been hosting these for 10 years now, but I'm always open to critiques and suggestions on how to run these things. Cheers to everyone who's submitted something over the last 10 years, and hopefully we get to another 10 down the road!

Old group build
to commemorate the 10th anniversary, make a "old" build, like a older kit, a kit made to look old, a rework on a older kit you have or a kit made to look like a old person.

Now for the next theme. We're back to the old way of suggesting themes, the ones that didn't pass the final round of voting are back again for a second chance at it.

>>23975879
Doing this for 10 years, there's two main takeaways as to what makes a theme "successful"
>1) How broad the theme is
This is straightforward - the more open-ended a theme is the more people submit stuff. The most successful themes in terms of entrants (Build Divers 1 with 24, Melee 2 and EXTRATHICC with 18, and Melee 1, Ranged, Mecha Musume, and Artillery with 16) are all themes that are either super-open ended (Build Divers just being "What MS would use in GBN with the only criteria being 1/144 scale Gundam models, which pretty much everyone in this general owns at least one of), or require not a lot of extra work to an existing model (Many of the entrants for the first Melee groupbuild used kits that were already melee focused like Shining, Denial, 00, or Barbatos as the base).

>2) How easy it is to do with commercial kits
Compared to the previously mentioned themes, themes like IGBX or Nightmare (Which had 4 entries mind you) required a more out-of-the-box approach. These themes required way more kitbashing than others, and the low numbers come from a variety of other factors (People not finishing their builds in time, people being unable to paint during builds held during winter, and so on).

Over at /tg/'s 40k general they have a monthly collage where they do and it seems like a lot of the same virtues apply there too (More open-ended themes like "Character" or "Spooky" getting ~30+ entries, while something more involved than painting a single mini like "Terrain" only getting 9 entries (I turned in the Artillery team in the bottom right)). Basically the more work something is, the less entrants the theme gets.

tl;dr, themes that are more easy and available for the average modeler to do tend to get more entries than themes that have more restrictions and barriers of entry.

Again, no it's not. If you feel otherwise it's really not my business.

Not true. If you just paint yellow and red over your grey or a dark primer you'll never get good coverage. Use a dull pink basecoat for reds and a flesh tone for yellows. I use vallejo sun yellow over vallejo sunny skin and it looks great.

Let the acrylic cure fully, and the lacquer might take fine if you spray in light coats over time. Test on a spoon or runner or something first honestly.

iirc generally they have a catalogue they give retailers with some "must buy" items, then they can select from what is being offered. Not that anon but no. I talked a gunpla retailer before and he said retailers can only sell what Bandai want them to sell. He tried to restock 10 copies of Zowort Heavy cause it was a best seller but Bandai only gave him 4. If the retail can just restock whatever they want and refuse the flops then Bandai would just sell Sazabi and nothing else. There must be an obligation to sell literall shit in order to be affiliate.

Yes, oyumaru for the mold with milliput, green stuff, resin (UV or otherwise), and even like off the shelf epoxy intended for repairing things.

It takes a little practice to get good at knowing how to set up the mold, which times you want a two part vs one part, what detail you can ignore and scratch build to save you work copying invisible insides of parts but it was certainly faster than how long it took me to reliably handpaint without brush strokes.

Literally cannot move around legs in other way than just bending his knee and arms are constantly forced into awkward position due to how wide the hips are. And those perfectly exposed fuel tanks.
>>
>>23978123
To be honest, it's nearly always same or similar sets. I guess that people simply don't want more than few variations of same torso sections for 30MS, meanwhile limbs (especially those new "dash" and the like) and maid body sells like hot cakes.
>>
Oh and let me remind you that Sestieh, Shuremi and Sourei 30MS kits were out of stock everywhere in Japan for the recent months, reaching 6-8k yen prices for second hands. So much for "no sales lmao".
>>
>>23978124
>exposed
just because they're round doesn't mean they aren't armoured
tons of MS have thrusters (and fuel) in their skirts and across all their bodies but you aren't questioning them, just because the idea of armour thickness is just too much to imagine when something appears like a propane tank
I don't even really like the G-Quuux Zaku that much but I'm tired of dumb criticisms just like its pants or don't but stop bein silly about it like they're paper mache containers of instant death juice and not armoured components of a giant war robot

It uses the OVA Unicorn as its base body, so it has the improved torso twist and sculpted head vulcans. On top of which it stacks all the weapons from the other versions. So, yeah, it's basically the best possible version of the MG Unicorn without being the MGEX.
>>
>>23978133
My main point of criticism is, in case you didn't notice, that model itself, partially because of those fuel tanks, have very limited movement range for legs, too limited for machine that's supposed to be able to operate both in space and on the ground. Should had bought one of original Zakus.

Finished painting the Alex, just decals left to do though I might put some more panel liner in the head vents since they're not pitch black yet. Super happy with the blue, I came up with the recipe while painting my gpo4 recently but it didn't fit my vision there so I didn't end up using it. The violet grey frame is also the exact shade I was aiming for, clearly purplish but not distracting.

>>
>>23978708
nta but while I've considered buying those resin kits over the years especially back when their prices weren't stupid, they don't really look that great. Well detailed and everything but they're still just awkward sculpts overall which is a shame for what I think are some of the most beautiful cartoon giant robot designs to ever come out of japan
>>
>>23978353
what does it look like
>>
>>23978668
Cool mashup, but I feel like the shoulders look extremely barren
There's a bit of detailing mismatch between them and the rest of the suit I feel like. They could really use some little holes or lines or something. Decals would help, just anything up there.

The black crotch gem really sucks my eye to it too, that shit's black as fuck. Wesley Snipes ass crotch. Not really hating on it but is that vanta black or something? shit looks like a void apart from one teeny tiny big of light reflection from an edge. It's cool but also kinda distracting, really draws my eye to it.

It's an actual thing. There's legally an acceptable amount of insect material in ground coffee and it's enough to trigger allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to it. There's no way to keep insects out of the beans in industrial grinding operations without the use of heavy pesticides and people don't like those anymore

Yep, it's pure black on purpose since the original Alex also has a pure black crotch. I considered doing shading or painting it off black but I decided this would be more on appropriate.

I saw that but passed on it after seeing the size, price, and the fact that it looked like it was really meant just for one specific mobile suit. BUT I really do like flight unit buddies.
