If you don't give a fuck about the characters, then there's not much reason to like it. It's not like 7 where the characters are just a vehicle for the over the top spectacle and absurdity of the setting.

I've been slowly expanding my mecha collection and want to finally check out Macross. I like bd's so I've gotten some good deals and thrifts piled into the backlog but I'm confused at the starting point. From trying to do some research, I know that Robotech, especially parts 2 and 3, is it's own unholy amalgamation that Harmoney Gold and co cooked up. Is picrel, the "Macross Saga", close enough to the original 36 ep ova series Super Dimension Fortress Macross? I think some elements of the op/ed were changed but I'm alright with that to start on so long as the story & scenes are correct.

>>24020919Start with the original SDF Macross TV series, then watch Macross: Do You Remember Love?, which is the movie adaptation of episodes 3-27 of SDF (and beautifully animated), then watch Macross Plus, either the 4-part OVA or the movie, they're both great, and then go for production order. Macross Zero has a pretty bad reputation, you can watch the Macross II OVAs but they're non-canon. Robotech is considered an interesting artefact of mid-80's anime localisation and its fandom was an important part of the 80's and 90's anime/sci-fi community in the US, but the Jack McKinney novels are considered the best thing to come out of Robotech and are apparently genuinely good sci-fi novels. You can also dip your toes in the comics, but they tend to be rather hit and miss, with some genuinely awful stuff and sometimes bonkers shit. That said there's some nice tidbits like a reference to Mazinger, and a Kamille and Char cameo in one of the comics (with the Zeta logo on a mug). The artist must have been a pretty serious weeb to know about Zeta in the late 80's lol
