Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

== STOLEN GROUPBUILD ==

Build a Mecha or vehicle built by one faction, but change its aesthetics and style to its rival faction! Examples include but are not limited to
>Canon examples of mechs being stolen and used by another group (ie: Casval's Gundam, Feddie Zakus, Ashura Mazinger, etc)
>Designs intended for one faction that were repurposed into a design for another faction (ie: Gerbera Tetra)
>What-if scenarios (ie: A Titans color Zeta Gundam)
>Stylistic interpretation (ie: What would a EFF version of the Z'gok look like?)
When it comes to your build, really make it clear that your mecha is being used by the other side!

An anon here posted his build some months back. Said there's very little color separation so yeah you'll have to put in quite the effort. Let's see if this pic of his I saved can lead you to when he originally posted it if you look in the archive.

Thanks anons, I was planning to paint anyway so lack ofncolour sep isn't a big issue. I will pick one up, I really want to do a custom paramail but I will probably do the Villkiss first.
>>
>>24005553
The only things that lack color separation in robot mode are the details on the sword, the collar that needs to be gold and the small end parts of the "muscles" along with tiny details like the lens fo the gun's scope - that's FAR from "very little color separation" and an hour tops if you just do some touch up work.

Alright lads this one's a two-parter.
Last night, I applied an enamel pinwash and streaking grime to this guy, along with some additional chipping. I had a light violet from Vallejo's Nocturna set (if you love purples like I do, it's a great one to have) that worked perfectly as a lighter version of the main armor color.

>>24005557
Also, I already told this the anon who built the Vilkiss in that pic because I did the same mistake:
LOOK AT THE FUCKING MANUAL.
The balljoints in the shoulders have grooves in them that correspond to some small nubs in front of the sockets on the main body. You put those together like in the manual and then rotate them into position so the nubs keep the balls from popping out.
Anon and I just jammed them in and grinded the nub-plastic down, resulting in the joint becoming tight as shit and nearly impossible to move to the point where you might rip the arm off.

death army flopping is one of the reasons the rest of the G gundam line up is pbandai and if this """"""bandai employee""""""" is to be believed the second reason is extra leg room for more budget. Ala a higher quality feature complete HG.
Maxter would've been a hshelf warming flop anyway. That garbage was one of the few pbandai kits not selling out instantly (outside of the US that is).
Anyway theres nothing stopping bandai from making them retail now like with those wing gundam mid season upgrade kits.

You'll probably have your face closer to your work if you're airbrushing in any scenario, as opposed to holding things arm's length when using spray cans, so at least an N95 mask while outside would be a good idea.
You could really just stick with aqueous primers though, the only real downside is the availability, hard to get them in jars.

Like many chemicals, lacquer paint has specific smells added to it so you notice that it is leaking through your mask/you ventilation isn't working. The smell is to save you from the orderless chemicals in them.
This is why you shouldn't trust Gunprimer's new enamel thinner that is oderless as they refuse to clarify on if it is safe to breathe.

What is it about paint fumes that's so deadly, anyway? I've been airbrushing without a mask for over ten years and I haven't died or gotten cancer... yet.

What about in small amounts over many years? I use a mask, but it doesn't have the best seal because of my beard, and I've got a spray booth, but it's made of chinesium with a computer fan. Still, sometimes after a long session I'll only notice a whiff or two of fumes while painting, but still feel a little off afterwards.

normal Aoshima or the "The Snap Kit" series? the "the snap kit" lacks too many details and kinda small compared to a tamiya model

Linked the wrong post somehow in this reply.
Since I'm having to post more, I'll dig out the flying armor for some better pictures later if you want, but it is basically a solid piece with nothing moving on it.
The Base Jabber is fun on the other hand. Comes with parts to allow suits being on both top and bottom as well as landing gear. Worse part are the white parts up by the cockpit. Those are wrap around stickers that I really should have just painted, but I was super lazy that day.
Also the handles are nicely tight. This Gustav Karl is hanging entirely by that handle and hasn't fallen after a month.

I'd ask what's the fun of that compared to the regular wide base jabber, but it looks like you found it quite fun. I was still iffy about the tickbalang but it ended up being great, so maybe it's the same for the type 89 also?

I'm in a similar boat as you with the MK2. Back in 2011 I build all my kits with a set of dull nippers, a hobby knife (also usually dull) and a pencil for panel lining. So I'm wanting to do better. I *think* it might be the revive MK2 in that kit. It was branded HGUC if I'm remembering correctly and I think the old one isn't.
There was a reprint recently of the the P Bandai Flying Armor + Super Gundam parts that I acquired, but the RG MK2 has been MIA for me.
Also for the base jabber, it just goes well with Jegans and I picked up a pair of them (only 1 built so far). I try not to just have all my kits standing in the autism pose, so it gives a bit of variety.

you aren't going to get any meaningful exposure to hobby levels of solvent unless you're spraying in a 1 cubic meter closet with zero ventilation for hours on end.
"oh no it smells funny and I feel a little dizzy" is absolutely nothing compared to occupational exposure levels in an industrial environment. the neurological and physiological issues associated with these solvents only start to rear their heads when you're in a car spray booth spraying liters per day for full shifts for years. sure, on paper no exposure is better than a little exposure, but you're more likely to have serious health issues from a little bit of sun exposure than hobby quantities of solvents. fear of baby volumes of petroleum distillates and organic solvents is reddit tier retardation.

There's a huge difference between natural VOCs and anthropogenic VOC exposure. Anyone who specifically became ill from hobby paint solvents would be immediately identifiable.
>>
>>24006117
Have you ever pumped gas before? That's a pretty strong solvent. It's one that'll actually really fuck up your brain. There's a lot of solvents you're around every day and some of them are actually very harsh. It would be outlandish for someone to have heavy exposure to hobby paints but also no exposure to any other solvents.

I feel like everyone in this argument forgot the main thing we are arguing about. Gunprimer just removed the smell, then based on how they paid a few people to reviewed it seems to have told them that it's completely safe to use without ventilation.
I just use Testors with a fan on in the room. The main point is they are charging a premium for removing a safety feature.
>>
>>24006118
There's a difference between pumping gas and huffing gas. Gas stations are significantly well ventilated. The petrol, in the car it goes. Don't be rama rama and put it up your nose.

Even auto mechanics, that basically swim in brake cleaner usually develop blood cancers due to ingestion rather than neurological and respiratory issues that you would acquire from vapors. And again, that is over years of occupational exposure. Not some retard spraying a minuscule amount of solvents through an airbrush for a couple hours a week.
>>
>>24006122
There's a reason you keep the garage door open while you're working.
You should still have some sort of air filtration when you're painting. There's no reason not to spray paints of varying toxicity and not have some kind of filter. Best case scenario, everything in the room is covered in sticky gray dust. I don't know why you're so opposed to even opening a window.

It's worth pointing out that the chemicals that make hobby lacquers toxic are linked to bad things happening to you. Toluene is linked to seizures and kidney issues. Why you would willingly expose yourself to that and why you would get mad when people say you should probably open a window is beyond me. Just open a window or something you retard.

Nowhere am I saying you shouldn't do that. But all those issues are linked to decades of occupational exposure or direct ingestion. Not small volume hobby exposure. You should even open the window just on the basis that the smell is bad. Starting a snap of my first Messer (the Type-F01). It's chest construction was really unique so far and it can be d so much even with the bulk.
Decided to hand paint the color correction stickers on the head. I think the monoeye came out alright. I used the sticker as a template, but when I pulled it about half the paint came off with it. Just dropped another dab of the lacquer paint on the end of a cotton swab (a bare wood side) in the middle and that seems to be working.

NTA I'm not sure why you think that the capital of the Philippines is something that is worth spending time on in a high school history course in the US. The battle of Manila bay was a footnote in a footnote war for us and McArthur didn't even fight to hold it at the start of WW2 since he declared it an open city.
Those are the two main places the city is relevant in US history, and in both there are more relevant things that have time spent on them.

Can I get one of these cheaper airbrushes just for topcoating, or should I stick to spray cans?
>>
>>24006409
that's going to be annoying to handle because of the pump, also i heard they're not that powerful and die easily, so just invest on a good compressor+air tank, especially if you're doing this for topcoating work.
>>
>>24006409
I suggest getting an actual compressor. These things are horrible.
>>
>>24006409
one thing will lead to another, you're gonna be all like "man, why do I need this set up JUST for topcoating? I could have also sprayed colored paints too" and wish you invested in a set up that will last you "forever" instead of buying this cheap garbage meant for casual usage
>>

>>
>>24006449
When you use a lot of paint that's when cans stop making sense as they are really expensive $/mL of paint wise. 1 jar of Mr color clear coat will do like 3 HGs despite being cheaper than cans.
>>
>>24006468
if you can't get 3 HG's out of one can of mr super clear then you're spraying too much

>>
>>24006534
if you build other plamo products from Bandai like SMP, paint is non-negiotiable. The stickers are awfu, the gold parts are awful, and they look cheaper than an HG gunpla without topcoat for x5 the price.

>>

>>
Spray cans are pretty easy and straightforward to use. You don't have to do shading or even masking and what not. Even just basic painting will make the kit look good already. And then maybe gundam marker for small bits like rivets. Pretty good entry level way to get a sense of painting.
>>
>>24006477
Tbf I spitballed as I have one continuous eye dropper bottle of pre-thinned clear coat that just gets bottles dumped in it whenever it gets low.
>>
>>24006534
Do what you have fun doing and ignore paint autist when he starts flipping shit
>>
>>24006556
Start by getting some markers, Dspiae or whatever and touch up some bits and details from the kits that you want to improve, finish with a top coat before you go ham with partial then full painting. Ultimately it's about how much you enjoy the process.
>>
>>24006556
What are you using? I find that the real challenge was to get the right ratio of thinner to paint. If you're using paintbrush, I honestly just suggest using spray cans or suck it up and get airbrush. Paintbrush seem more convenient at a glance (minimal tool requirement and cheap) but there's considerably higher skill level trying to get that nice even coat. Spray can/ airbrush is easier to get smooth even coating.
>>
You don't have to full paint. Personally I don't bother painting most of my HGs, but I reserve my MGs for full paint and enjoy them as long projects.

Swapping out Penelope's hip joints for the Alyzeus's. The socket pieces are actually from the Alyzeus/Novel Penelope arm shoulders and have a good bit of holding power but with how heavy the legs are gonna be I might end up gluing them in place on this axis for stability. Either way they're a lot better joints than the Penelope comes with by default and it helps spread its stance wider to fit the increased height.

I have never replied to one of your posts in the past. I also make no pretenses of being a GBWC builder or the like myself, I am a hobbyist who just aims to be a bit better each model than I was the last.
I see what you are trying to do. You like the aesthetic of armour modelling, MK stuff and the like. You want to lean into the real side of Real Robots, weather your kits heavily and try to make a lived in world for your models. That said, I feel from all I have seen of your work that you have stalled out in your progress. I am not going to try and psychoanalyse whether it is a snap response to harsh criticism online ("I'll show them how good my stuff is"), just getting stuck in a rut or have plateaued/knowledge gapped yourself, but know that if you got to this point in your modelling (which IS significantly beyond day one painters, snapshitters and the like but really isn't as developed as you present it as being), you can improve far more than you currently have.
Your fundamentals need work, you lean too heavily on "random" effects and it harms the story of your pieces, and you appear to be neglecting prep work and just hoping that your many layers of weathering will hide said neglect. I know it might not be what you want to hear, but I would honestly suggest you try and do a clean build. Focus on kit prep, neat application of colours, neat washing and highlighting and see what comes out on the other end. It doesn't have to be a big fancy kit, it can be a BB Senshi or gacha kit for all I care. I just think you could benefit from a shift of focus, alternatively you can keep making kits that are 60% of what you could actually achieve with 5% more effort and get in arguments with people on /gpg/.
Have two (admittedly not /m/ but adjacent) kits I did about a year apart, the Russian Morane-Saulnier probably took about 5% more effort than the German Fokker, but because I had ground out fundies it was way better despite being an older and shittier kit.

They were notorious for a while for accepting way more preorders than they would get stock in for like 3 year (as in you would get your preorder in 3 years). its snapfit with almost perfect color separation.
you will want nice (enamel) panel liner though, and ideally a bit of neon green paint for the forehead A. don't line the gray ABS with enamel (unless topcoated) and ideally line the PS parts while still on the runner to prevent the enamel liner from spreading any microcracks that might form during assembly.
>>
>>24007139
Great, that was exactly what I was hoping for.

>>24007137
Thanks for letting me know. First time going to my LGS, was looking for Jap tcgs, saw they had gunpla and made an impulse buy. Rest was Wing and Seed.
>>
>>24007146
At the end of the day $10 over isn't bad in the scheme of things. Prices vary a lot between sellers, esp. with shipping costs factored in depending on the volume the seller buys.
>>
>>24007146
For reference, if you want to get cheap Gunpla, go find a Hobby Lobby if one exists in your town. Their section is very mundane, but they are by far the cheapest way to buy Gunpla in the US.

Very fun kit to put together but bandai really should have improved the hip joint from the freedom 2.0 frame. I reamed out the socket a little bit in advance but it still stressed the hip peg a lot putting it in and taking off so I had to put in brass rods just in case.

Lobby's prices are so good on their 40% that all my local hobby stores have had to slash their prices to compete. Their only failing is not selling any paint beside Testor enamels and the three primary color acrysions. Also they killed Tamiya tanks and Kotobukiya.

And done with the snapping. Was a fun kit to put together. Also the vast majority of the color correction being yellow stickers made it not too hard to just brush paint them on. Could not get the far end of the face cords to have the sides yellow while keeping the cord clean, so going to leave it as is.

picking up a new kit and some supplies because of the labor day sale. should i get the pour type or fine type panel liners? the fine one seems easiest but i hear the ink fades away while the pour lasts longer. i'm gonna be getting the quuuuuux and wanna do it up.
>>
>>24007548
Don't get the gundam marker branded fineliners, they're honestly too fat to be use well in most HG kits. You'd rather use something like a Sakura Micron 003 fineliner pen.
But the pour type is preferable to both for the bulk of the panel lines.
>>
>>24007553
Micron pens smudge like a motherfucker though.
>>
>>24007548
Pour type is easier to use but is also made of plastic destroying demon liquid. If it gets into some recess it'll destroy the part. It's fine if it dries quick but if it gets somewhere where it doesn't you're fucked.

The longer I build this the more I wonder just what nefarious shit went down behind the scenes that the chinks could sell it for below 50 bucks.
Like, by now I assume that the diecast frame and pre-painted gold parts have lead mixed in and the plastic some undesirable politicians and activists they grinded down.

Cheap labor + advanced manufacturing tech.
It's why China can mog even a bunch of developing SEA countries. Those SEA countries have cheap labor, but not the level of tech the chinese have. While developed nations may have the tech, but the labor is expensive.
>>
>>24007546
Overpaying
>>
>>24007590
>Cheap labor
this used to be true but nowadays, it's way cheaper to do some basic material processing in china before moving your actual labor to somewhere like vietnam. china's honestly a lot closer to the us now more than people realize. the big price hack they got is government subsidies on top of having very integrated supply chains. the factories they use for every step of the process might be in the same city block compared to other supply chains which might even fly across countries.

does bandai manufacture gunpla *in* japan? if they did anything in china it's probably also a safe bet that some of their resources got bought or poached too.
>>
>>24007599
Some of their kit lines were manufactured in China like the SD Gundam world heroes series, the tampo print for their 30MS face plates are also done there. China also have some exclusive kits for their gundam bases so I assumed those are also manufactured there.
>>
>>24007546
If you can get it for MSRP ($25) then go for it. I wouldn't pay a penny more, though. It's absolutely not worth scalper price.
>>
>>24007378
>>24007381
Gundam is indeed on a downswing. But also the economy is fucking awful right now. I've been running an eBay store as a side hustle since the 90s and I've never had such a slow year before. None of my stuff is selling no matter cheap I make it, even stuff that gets 100+ views and 10+ watchers just don't move.

New thread. Even though the OP is still under 2000 characters, 4chan wasn't letting me add gunpla.deals to the resources section because that would make the OP too long, and so it was refusing to let me post the new thread with it. So I made the decision to (at least temporarily) replace the plamo indexes with gunpla.deals, as I'd like the links in the resources to be actively helpful to people.

I'm willing to reorganize some stuff to try and re-add the indexes if people really want them, but they ARE MyAnimeList-type websites, and I'm not sure how useful those are to people. Please let me know.
