Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

== STOLEN GROUPBUILD ==

Build a Mecha or vehicle built by one faction, but change its aesthetics and style to its rival faction! Examples include but are not limited to
>Canon examples of mechs being stolen and used by another group (ie: Casval's Gundam, Feddie Zakus, Ashura Mazinger, etc)
>Designs intended for one faction that were repurposed into a design for another faction (ie: Gerbera Tetra)
>What-if scenarios (ie: A Titans color Zeta Gundam)
>Stylistic interpretation (ie: What would a EFF version of the Z'gok look like?)
When it comes to your build, really make it clear that your mecha is being used by the other side!

I already did my shopping back during the 20% off sales at USAGS earlier this year. Unfortunately Newtype's prices just don't compare and/or they're out of stock of anything I might consider (though that's partially due to me having already bought 90% of everything I'd ever want).

Newtype is my last go to store, usagundam is peak due to the amount of sales they do, last one was some random one with a cat pic, another I have is good as they have no sales tax so just paying for shipping is cool, plus they get some stock weirdly early for US, Gundam planet is like newtype but often better sales. Then the smaller various shops, I’m see if A to Z toy hobby has a physical store so I can just pick up something since same city plus Labor Day sale.

>If you're in a pinch you can use a regular ass pencil like people used to back in the day
No it's gotta be ink or whatever yummy stuff they put in the markers, otherwise it won't match the rest of my kits, as well as the one I've half-built so far
>>
>>24007983
Do you panel line everything the same color?

Yes because I only have one humble marker, I vaguely know that brown goes well with red and other neat details that involved buying more markers
>>
>>24007987
If you get thinned out paints and a fountain pen you can make your own panel liner. You also get the perk of being able to have it be whatever color you want. Dspiae makes an aluminum panel lining pen that works great for it.

Yeah you ain't lying it's been a painful few months for my wallet. Couldn't find anything I wanted enough to pad it out for the free shipping so oh well. EWAC Jegan calls to me because I've built so many fucking Jegans but 44 bucks for it just ain't it right now.
Also fuck them and their removal of order consolidation I hate it so much. I already have two different orders (btw fuck I hate they don't ship shirts and models togethers they fucking used to) for October and I just want to throw a couple Cuaron Zulus in one but fuck me. I can deal with every other bit of bullshit with PB but the order consolidation shit is still the worst bullshit about dealing with them. They've definitely lost a bunch of money from me after getting rid of that.
>>
>>24007991
I'm not too hurt by it being removed. I don't order from them too often and as far as I know they were the only company who actually did that. Still wish I could get all those crossbone. I could live without the guncannon detector with two alternate parts and the red mk.iii since I can just get a normal one and paint it red.
>>
>>24007995
For the past several years they're probably 99% of my online model orders and like 70% of what I buy at all so I got a bunch of use out of it. When new shit with the same shipping month keeps cropping up at different times it's just designed to piss you off. I dunno I don't preorder stuff much but it makes sense to me you'd be able to lump your orders together. All this stuff has to get re-boxed up and sent out anyways from their orders, and while maybe some other shit on the site goes out at different times basically everything Gundam related seems to always ship at the same time for me, so it's not like it's any more work really. It's less as far as I can think of it, by the time anyone has to unload and pack boxes it should be just the finalized item list so not like it should cause any confusion with workers or whatever. I don't get it.
>>
>>24007999
I don't know anything about how warehouses or logistics work so I can't really speculate about it. I just know all the stuff I wanted was four seperate carts and would cost me 350 dollars. I might still do it and live off of instant noodles and tap water for a while.
>>
>>24007978
>>24007981
Pencil, pen, sharpie, cheap acrylic paint, marker anything can be panel liner desu there are a lot of options. You can uv panel line with uv paint cool effect
>>
>>24008003
All the Crossbones? If you're unsure you can wait and see if they don't sell out. If so they'll be in stock. They probably won't last that long but honestly who knows these days, some stuff lasts for a while. If they do though you can shave off 30 bucks of shipping anyway. That's what I've been doing with some stuff.
Sword Calamity's been on there in stock for well over a year at this point and it tempts me every time.
>>
>>24008007
That and a few re/100 kits. I love re/100 kits. I'd actually only need to pay shipping for one of the carts since it'd be three orders of two things each then the denan zon by itself.
I may hold out and see if they do a denan gei reprint. I missed that one when it dropped.
>>
>>24007991

I suspect we'll see both Den'ans reprinted next year, maybe even with something new. Unfortunately you just gotta deal with it as a late UC chad, we're too powerful for general releases.
>>24008011
Before it was worrying about things selling out instantly but it turns out I'd rather go back to that, at least I could just immediately buy the shit I wanted and not worry about being raped on shipping. Oh well though. I'm enjoying the fact a lot of things don't actually sell out anymore and make it to in-stock status. I really didn't think Icarus would be around to be casually bought so that's cool.
I wanted more Daughtresses though and they didn't make it so I'm sad.
>>
>>24008005
>cheap acrylic paint
I tried this, even with the addition of dish soap and what not, but it just doesn't flow well.

>>24008020
Maybe I'll get a cheap fountain pen and try again.
>>
>>24008022
Luckily late UC has a lot of recolors to keep me occupied. I still have a few f91 versions to complete and a few victory gundams.

>>24008024
Use vallejo airbrush thinner. It's got a surfactant in it that helps it flow nice. If it doesn't flow well you can also add their flow enhancer but I never needed to when I used water based panel liners.

>>
>>24008027
As far as I know his are both identical to the original just in different colors. I was planning on getting a few at some point just to paint them those colors. It'd also work since I need to get the one that comes with the extra equipment so I can use the f91 that comes with it for that.
>>
>>24008040
I don't know the whole context but there's plenty of roles even outdated MS like the Hizack are fine for, especially for research purposes. Looks like they have extra head cameras (and extra shoulder spikes...?) so they've been slightly modified at least.

>>24008042
Yeah there are no physical differences. Technically he's piloting custom-tuned MP F91s which are slightly inferior but we've got no real differences to them. Thinking about it it might be a good excuse to use my 1.0 F91 for him.

I just glued one of the arm joints in place finally to deal with it
Basically I expect the HGUC to be a much better kit in most regards is all I'm saying and only get the RE100 if you love the goofy fucker so much
>>
>>24008129
They have more plastic now, that's why.
>>
>>24008133
But doesn't a $50 MG have even more plastic?
>>
>>24008135
The old MGs are. Newer MG cost around 80 to 150 bucks.
>>
>>24008129
Extra cost of materials and the increased cost of international logistics. Every part of the process of making anything costs more now. Old molds don't cost money to make so their prices aren't increasing as much.

>>24008135
The molds already exist so they're insulated from a lot of the increased costs.
>>
>>24008135
There aren't very many (US average retail price) $50 MGs anymore bro. A quick look at what's in that range are the Wing MGs which while I bet are more plastic probably are pretty close to the new RG.

>>
>>24008139
>The molds already exist so they're insulated from a lot of the increased costs.
Excuse me, why are you lying to the gentleman?
>>
>>24008132
Yeah, I've heard the engineering is a bit shit, and I am running out of shelf space, but the ideal of a big Hamma Hamma is something else, love when weird designs like that get some big love. I love my SMP R-Gun Rivale for that reason.
>>
>>24008075
Out of these I'm really only interested in Hamma Hamma personally. All the other stuff is either not my jam or I want it in a different grade.
>>
>>24008146
The cost of making molds has also increased. Old kits still cost more because of the increased cost of materials and the increased cost of logistics but it's not as much more as entirely new production.
>>
>>24008146
NTA but it's somewhat true. Bandai has adjusted prices on older kits but it's very rare and they're pretty small, a couple hundred yen, overall. Most of the price increases aren't coming from them directly. They price new kits at higher prices but if you're a Japanese salaryman you're only paying like 300 yen more on the same kits you've grown up your whole life buying when they get reprinted.
>>
>>24008146
Well he is not wrong. Making a new kit from scratch is much more expensive than a reprint. You have to pay the artist and engineers, too.
>>

>>
>>24008182
Their molds are made of pot metal and and break down after a few prints. It's why chinese shit never gets reprinted after a few runs. Bandai makes molds that last decades. It's obviously going to cost more when they need to hold up for decades and produce tens of thousands of runners each.

It's just not the same standard of mold making. I've gotten some chinese stuff which was relatively new and was flashed to shit already from the mold degrading. As far as I remember, the only time I've seen flashing on a bandai model kit was the heat pipes on a MG zaku II produced this year.

I would be really surprised to learn it. Tomino had a number of Gundam sequel drafts and most of them ended up bearing similarities to works we ended up getting. Especially back then the idea of alien invaders was this prevailing cartoon trope he wanted to get away from as much as possible. I think it's pretty clear through all his works since Ideon he's primarily interested in the human experience and the ways individuals both shape and are shaped by institutions and war. His greatest strength is in character writing, and he's way more interested in how humans can come to view other humans as "aliens" than dealing with actual aliens. That particularly recurs in a bunch of his works.

Some designs were the product of their designers with little guidance, other designs Tomino made some crude mockups for or otherwise had particular ideas/went through revisions for, there's a whole lot to the process and each one is its own story. There's some good info about the production of each series out there. Mark Simmons has some cool translations on his site about this stuff particularly and so does Deacon/Zeonic.

That's simply the result of inviting various designers with their own artistic visions

Pretty sure every design had some sort of input from the director. Kobayashi's original lineart for Marasai would be a nightmare to animate.
>>
>>24008246
Yeah, but I mean some designs are noted as asking to incorporate some motiff or a feature or something, sometimes it's a case of "make whatever, we need a new guy here" and in either case designs may need some or no iteration. I think Turn X is the classic example of a design drawn to some ideas that was basically just taken as is from its draft without any iterative steps. I seem to recall Ishigaki talking about a few of his V designs falling into the camp of "we need some dudes, make whatever" and then narrowing down and adjusting from feedback. I'm ignoring Gundams, every Gundam design went through painstaking processes of committee approval and all.

In the case of Turn A as whole, Tomino said in one of the interview that he felt abit regretful that he didn't supervise the designs further. That was the time when he was so done with Gundam that he just didn't give a shit about how the robots looked anymore. Looking at Turn A designs in retrospect, i think he was right cause the robots could have looked alot weirder than just "humanoid robots made of geometric shapes".
>>
>>24008259
He feels regret and yet X and A are some of the best designed mobile suits thanks to his lack of supervision and Syd's designs.

I get that humanoid stuff sells but i do love the weirdness of unorthodox UC designs and wish there is a market for them in modern times.
>>
>>24008276
The only design in Turn A that sastify me is Wodom. It breaks up the humanoid silhouette and reminds of Ma.K. Yeah yeah it is a Western Chicken Walker, but i need more of them.
>>
>>24008280
Turn X and the WaDOM's legs are actually pretty close in construction. The only real difference is the Turn X maintains an upright posture by default instead of squatting, more or less. They aren't exactly identical obviously but their broad forms are extremely similar in function.
>>
>>24008274
The Turn X isn't really either. It was meant to come from people who left the solar system, never true ayy lmao aliens.

You can say the same about Xeku Eins and Xeku Zwei. Eins has a standard humanoid looks but Zwei looks alot more dehumanized and monstrous due to the extra arms and added bulk despite having similar structure and parts with Xeku Eins. Alot of mobile suit designs are just one fat ass away from becoming a kaiju.

>>
>>24008286
Yeah I just meant specifically if you love the weirdo legs on the WaDOM the Turn X can actually just about perfectly emulate it. It has the same strange construction of enlarged foot, small thigh. I think that's one of the cool things about it is that Turn X looks quite typical in some respects but the asymmetry in nearly every element of its design and the way the legs embody the same bizarre structure as the WaDOM are what make it feel so distinct. Bless every animator that worked overtime to draw it doing rad shit.
>>
>>24008293
>thigh
I meant calf, but also I realize this doesn't necessarily make sense either. The way the calf piece acts in the leg structure is pretty much the same, is all I mean, it's just tilted forward on the WaDOM by default while the Turn X stands up right, but either can pretty much attain either's pose. It's a cool leg structure. Turn X does it better with the articulated back piece for the rear foot though.

No tax at GP (to my state NY at least? Not sure if this applies to every state in the contiguous US) so you're paying less than Amazon, and you have the option of the private warehouse for free shipping when you have $150 worth of orders stacked up. Not to sound like a shill but it's probably the best storefront for US domestic customers right now if they have the kits you want.
>>
>>24008383
>No tax at GP (to my state NY at least? Not sure if this applies to every state in the contiguous US)
Up until 2018 the stupid way the tax law worked in the USA is that you only paid tax on online stores headquartered in the same state as you.
Since then it is even dumber. Now the rule is that you pay tax if the company is in your state OR if they do "enough" online business in your state, with all 50 states having their own individual law for what is or isn't enough.

So huge companies like amazon have tax everywhere, small enough companies only have sales tax for their home state, and mid sized companies might have some fucked up combination of tax in some states and not others depending on how high their annual sales are.

I've used Tamiya for years, and recently bought a couple bottles of Gaia notes paints to try out. Anyone who uses them mind giving me a little advice?

For a casual build, and if I'm coating it in black, how important is primer? I've had things I painted with tamiya (often with MLT as thinner to add durability as I've discovered in the past decade) and often even in kid's hands the paint isn't damaged with handling or mild play without primer. How critical is it? I am under the understanding that lacquer will bite into the plastic more. Also I'm building chinesium, specifically the 1/100 hygogg upscale. Is there much of a noticeable difference in how much it adds to pegs etc? I know jap builds just hose their shit down, sometimes with absolute shit technique with the airbrush, and lacquer really lets them get away with it. Then they just crunch that shit together, but I am in the habit of putting a little sticky tack or masking tape on pegs often, or cutting the peg receptors. Also 15-18 psi ok if thinned to skim milk as usual?
>>
>>24009107
The Qubeley was more pure white with rose and pink accents. But yeah, I can kind of see it now, maybe if the purpose were changed to be closer to fuchsia and the non-torso coloring was changed to white.

Because the lacquer bits in you don't necessarily need primer because the first coat of paint will semi-act as a primer. I think just doing two coats of black will be perfectly fine.
If you're worried about pegs and such I would either mask them before, or give them a sand down afterwards.
I tend to go about 12 to 16-ish PSI for lacquers and that works fine and dandy.

Why the fuck do Koto waterslide decals suck so much. How the hell are third party chink waterslide decals so much better than them.

Chink decals don't even need mark setter and just apply a little bit of lubrication to them again, and you can slide them around the surface to get pinpoint accuracy on where you want them without it falling apart. Meanwhile, Koto decals require you to jizz all over the surface with mark setter for them to stick and that's assuming that they don't pulverize themselves first the moment you grab them with your tweezers.

Is it easier to paint an RG, MG or HG?
I've only painted a couple of HG so far, but I can't help wonder if the bigger part count doesn't actually make the other lines easier since they have better color separation and structure out of the box and I can just paint all the parts individually, instead of having to glue a bunch of parts together to get rid of seam lines.

Found a wild Sestieh pretty cheap at a local shop hidden behind some other kits. Really lucky break since its one of the 30MS kits that's near impossible to find outside some grubby scalper with inflated prices.

Time to enjoy the 30MS girl that literally everyone refuses to put on her bloomers for some reason.

Done with the third party TB Acguy.

The plastic quality just ain't good. You can see a lot of swirls on the Recon Type one. A lot of the pieces were broken off from the runner when I got it, resulted in a lot of gashes on the plastic that needs putty to fix and I can't be bothered.

Although everything snapped together easily enough.

But, look at them. They look like the real deal. All my 18m MGs have to be delicately removed from the shelves, but you can look at the promotional images and see they got the scale right.

The lack of accessories is a shame, but the manufacturer already announced they're working on a DLC. Although I am kinda worried because they didn't show off my favorite variant of this little guy (the heavy firepower type with the skinny arm).
>>
>>24009433
Oh and I forgot to mention they came with only one commander horn when they're supposed to come with two, one in each runner. It didn't matter because you only need one, but they gave you a whole extra arm that you won't use so I don't think it was deliberate on their part. QC was just lacking.

So make sure to check your parts if you buy this guy. If it's missing any, try contacting the seller (I just get my third parties on Ali) and see if they can send you the missing part. This happened to me before and they sent a whole runner because I was missing a part, free of charge.

I still believe something must've gone wrong with TB S2. S1 had about a dozen kits and TWO MG Ver Kas. S2 had 2 HGs only.

While it's really rare these days they don't produce a kit they announce (not so much figures though, still waiting on RD Aquarius...) it wasn't as uncommon in the past. I don't know how much of this was a hard announcement or just testing the waters but it was back when the G MGs were coming out.

>>
>>24009764
>$170 on ebay

>>
>>24009863
That's the X-2 Kai, it is distinct from the normal X-2. It doesn't come with all the parts for the shotlancer; instead it comes with a huge rifle and the unique thrusters.
It does come with a good chunk of the parts for the shotlancer though.
>>
>>24009870
If you had to pick 1 of the two, which do you recommend?
>>
>>24009872
Personally I think the X-2 Kai's unique thruster pylons are pretty much the coolest feature any of the Crossbones get in terms of basic body arrangement changes, so I'd go with it. I think the rifle is a really cool design too, always liked it. If you're handy you can scratch up the shotlancer into something usable from the parts you get, though I gotta admit it sucks to not come with the few extra bits it needs to have it as an option. X-2's shotlancer is definitely the coolest shotlancer design around.
>>
>>24009870
NTA but I guess I'll explain the X-2 as well.
It started off as a darker-painted variant of the X-1, until the Jupiter Empire convoy caught up to the Crossbone Vanguard and Zabine defected to the Jupiter Empire. The X-2 was piloted in an a gladiator battle against Tobia, who was on foot. Tobia won by hijacking the X-2 and ejecting the Core Fighter, blasting his way out of the arena to return to the Crossbone Vanguard. The Jupiter Empire then used the data from the X-2's computer to fill in for the missing Core Fighter as a permanently attached cockpit, resulting in the X-2 Kai.
>>
>>24009875
I think the X-2 Kai is a better model than the regular X-2 but if you prefer the shot lancer then I'd recommend the regular version
>>
I've been using Mr Super Clear to do my matte coating, but cans are so hard to find for a decent price these days. Thinking of trying Vallejo Mecha varnish instead with my little Gaahleri airbrush/compressor kit. You can get like a 200ml bottle of this stuff for like $15. Anyone use this regularly?
>>
>>24009910
It's good stuff. It goes on best unthinned and in very light coats. I used to use it a couple of years ago when I only used water based paints.
Pic related. Old build that used that for cleatcoating.
>>
>>24009919
Nice. I can't even imagine how many kits a 200ml bottle will last me. Those damn cans are only good for a handful at best.
>>
>>24009937
The mr. super smooth in the jars will actually last you about as long, dollar per dollar. The stuff is a lot more potent it's also a lot tougher. You can get three jars of the GX that's compatible with thinner you probably already have and it'll last you quite a long time.
Vallejo is still good. Just not as good.

I use their stuff when I have an unpainted kit with a bunch of ABS. It sprays decent and dries quickly, but I don't like the surface texture as much as GX113/GX114/GGX Matt (all look about the same).
Unless you are painting inside I'd just go with the GGX and MLT or RT (not the GGX stuff). It comes in a giant bottle and using normal lacquer thinner makes it cure in like 3-4 days instead of a week. GGX is touch dry after a few minutes just like other lacquers, it's just a bit soft for the first few days.

>>
>>24010313
my biggest suggestion is that natural movement and posing comes from articulating, to some slight degree, nearly every joint you can
Nothing should be symmetrical, offset it by even just a single degree or two and you lose the feeling of unnatural stiffness that makes things look like toys
You have to think about the small ways each joint works to convey a pose, even something as basic as just standing for display gets altered a lot by angling the legs outwards instead of fully parallel, or giving the torso just the very slightest rotation even just a fraction of a degree to get rid of the perfect centreline between torso and crotch, or a tilt of the heads or shoulders, all these details add up.
Photography is also as much about what you don't take a picture of, and these go hand in hand, poses often work best from a limited array of viewing angles and feel awkward from other frames of reference.

Enormous, bigger than I perhaps initially expected the final product to increase in height but the process took me where it took me and I've got no regrets. It'd be staring down at the original Penelope quite easily. It's annoying to take them out, but it's Psyco sized.

A few areas are the wrong kind of messy and I can still read them as plaplate strips like these specifically but overall looks pretty cool. I think some of the streaking effects are a bit overdone in a few areas or just look a bit off, mostly near those recessed fueltanks in that first picture. Hard to read a scale from it though I think that works for it too as something of a general purpose display base.

lacquer is both more resistant and notably does NOT need to cure. it only needs to dry and then it's done, no other chemical reactions happen afterwards. (unlike both acrylic and enamel)
you can paint over lacquer primer in 15-30 minutes once it's dry to the touch
>>
>>24010595
>Also under gating is easier to make clean cuts of. I have no idea why people bitch about them.
the bootleg chinese hg gouf reworked runner A to have undergates and it was quite a pain because some of the new gate locations were inside concave curves and thus impossible to get at cleanly with a nipper or file
so undergates can be a pain to clean up if placed poorly
>>
>>24011044

goddamn, that last picture is emblematic of everything everyone has given you as far as constructive, kind feedback. Bro it looks like acrylic canvas paint straight out of the tube. That or old, thicker craft paint. My favorite part is that you're just applying pigment to things with no intention or capability of recreating how anything actually looks. It's just a gross mess. Thank you for making my evening good again, a nice laugh to remind me how even if I beat myself up I'm still not this.
>>
>>24011201
>intention or capability
Ehhh I wouldn't go that far. Based off his choice of palette he has a very clear understanding of color theory and his techniques are quite ambitious just not applied to their fullest potential.

I agree he doesn't listen to our advice enough though. Especially about not thinning his paint enough.
>>
>>24011213
Dunno, I see it the other way round. He has a concept/ theme he wants to go for, like I get it, I'm aware that sort of old worn out dirty aesthetics is very much a thing. But he lacks the actual understanding of how to apply those color combo and specific technique like which aspect to apply the gunks and how. It's controlled, intended dirtiness vs random dirtiness.

I can see and understand what he's going for, but he just refuse to actually learn the logic behind getting to it.
>>
>>24011213
You're probably spot on about color theory, I couldn't say as I'm partially colorblind do to an injury. But his weathering lacks intention, and his painting lacks capability or skill. He copes with the lack by saying he's doing it right, and you can't make him change. I hope he has another crashout this week and threatens to leave before tucking his tail to keep posting.
>>24011219
Ideas and implementation are very far fields apart. His technique is such dogshit that I can't even see what his concept might have been. If he just learned basic versions, he'd be miles further in the hobby. Right now he reminds me of your average Paint on Plastic fan.
>>
It honestly bothers me that they never did anything more with the RG Crossbone mold. Full cloth, x-3, half cloth, and x-0 pb variants would've been hits
>>
>>24010884
The Figure Rise Standard kits are my main Rider action figs cause SHF is getting stupid expensive, most are exclusive PBandai shit, and putting less and less accessories.

They're fun and decent builds. That said, you just built two of the "best ones" being Kuuga and Agito. The rest are decent but need at least paint app work to make them look nicer. And even then you still need to use some of the stickers for the trinkets or symbols (Double's Gaia Memories for example) since no waterslides.

I think the line has slowed down a lot or is done now after KR Ichigo....so who knows if we'll get more. With the new Tokusatsu Action Figure line they made, we're good for affordable Reiwa Rider action figs at least for now.

Is the MD Puni Mofu line really my only choice for loli girlpla? They're a tad bit too skimpy for my tastes. I'm no prude anti-lolifag, but I prefer more voluptuous girls if I'm to get my rocks off. That said, I still am especially fond of the aesthetic of a really tiny girl wielding gigantic fuck you weapons or mechanical limbs. And the Puni Mofu line has way too less weaponry and mechanical parts for me.
>>
>>24011292
You can try any of the FAG Baselard variants. Much more mechanical than any MD line, but she's intentionally of the more "lightweight" mecha build. From what I understand, you want a loli girlpla whose mechanical aspects is pretty much her using heavy industrial/military equipment. And none is currently coming to mind aside from custom builds I've seen some people do. Like, the loli 30MS girls being mixed up with the chonkier 30MM kits for example.

sometimes yes, you get variation in color theme and it makes a more interesting texture than straight up airbrushing. the grey on this one was handpainted at it made the oxide red chipping effects you see easier to create (as the paint would be thinner in parts and it would scratch off more easily).
>>

I think Bandai basically stopped trying to justify prices because people will buy it anyway. I bet it sells out instantly on release because people aren't intelligent enough to know they're being fked over. The PG Exia, one of the best PG i've seen, sits at 211 USD retail price. This thing is more expensive than a PG. The original MGEX unicorn and SF were already overpriced for what they were and this thing is almost double the price of the original SF. Ya Bandai needs to go down. At one point they will def price out a majority of their customers. This is basically an IQ check right here. If you buy this, you really need to go look in the mirror and ask yourself if you're stupid or not.
>>

They won't though. As long as new gundam shows are being made, there'll still be new gunpla bringing in new fans. And they'll still be producing HGs for those new shows. And they'll still reprint older gunpla for those newer fans. Not everyone is hardcore like /m/ who have bought like, everything and need to keep buying new things.

The plastic kit line failed because the show was so terrible. That's the wrong thing to be focusing on. Virtually all HG kits rely on stickers for color separation, that's quite literally one of their defining characteristics. I literally picked this up on a whim because I realized I didn't have a green or mook Zaku II and didn't want an HGUC dupe, and this thing just happened to be in stock unlike the FZ or 0083.
And by all rights it shouldn't really be that impressive of a kit, but it's the closest thing I keep to me on my table, right next to my beloved AEUG Mk-II

>>

Are they not impressive? I'm still waiting for one, but it looks like my only option is either overpaying for a regular one or probably-overpaying for an Axis Shock version. Either that or I opt for the Stark Jegan...

There's nothing wrong with them really, they just also aren't particularly impressive in any way. As construction and everything goes they're incredibly average.
I'd recommend the Stark Jegan, it's around in shops right now I think. They're all fine, not like any of them changes much fundamentally about them. Many of the PB variants come with a nice array of extra parts though which is probably what I like most about them.

I have not had a chance to build it yet, but they are some interesting colors with the red being a metallic (with some really bad swirls on my shield part.
One thing I'm going to have to debate on are the yellow of the thrusters. If I paint them like I did on the standard Jegan, they aren't going to be tinted right. And I don't have a clear red to go on top.
>>
>>24012117
I did, SD's of all ranges are sticker city but at least the Hello Kitty is a novelty. I don't think any of these can be gauged as "worth" building, it'll come down to a matter of your personal taste in mobile suits.
>>
>>24012119
>you have one too

If I'm just going to snapshit up, is there anything I should be aware of? Like, the plastic looks shinier, so is this going to be like plated shit where any cutting or nub marks would be grossly evident, or am I good to go?
>>24012093
>>24012117
NTA but yeah anon I only have the Sazabi because I wanted a tiny and cheap Sazabi, but SD EXes from what I've seen really really aren't worth it. Hollow pieces PLUS fifty thousand stickers. If you at the very least have markers or something for colour correction it might not be that bad, but otherwise I wouldn't say they're worth the price unless you absolutely wanted a dirt-cheap version of your favourite mobile suit that you didn't care much about the appearance of.

Well as you can see it's still in the plastic, but it looks like just unique plastic colors not a coating so it should be fine. I'm confident in that assement as it was like $7 more than a standard Jegan when I got it at a Gundam base. I don't think Bandai does any coating kit that cheap.

I've handpainted lacquers plenty retard. You use thinner, you use retarding agent. Not the kind your mom used, the kind that slows the paint drying so it levels. Now I'm not retarded, so between coats I do a thin coat of enamel clear and let it fully cure. Now it won't reactivate and bond to the lower lacquer colors. Then again I had to do that because my compressor was broken and I was waiting for my new one.
>>24011454

>>
>>24012282
>Starting with an RG is kind of ballsy but you did fine.
I went to a Gendum store and asked a few questions here weeks ago.

The Gendum store only had generic stuff, mostly HG, RG and PG with only a few MG. This general told me that MG is ded and I should go Entry grade or HG but when I went to my nearest Gendum store the EGs look like McDonalds toys and the HG displays looked too basic. It was also HG from shows I never watched and I saw 0079 up to G-Reco.

Was mulling between the OG and the Exia but then someone in this thread warned me that old RGs are fucking trash especially those before 2017-2019 so I dipped out. My final choice was between the RX-78v2 or the HG Origin one and I picked the former a couple weeks ago.

Will probably try panel lining, the stickers are too small and I'm literally a fatso with fat fingers.
>>
>>24012342
At least you didn't consider the RG Zeta.
>>
>>24012342
>This general told me that MG is ded
You listened to the wrong people. MG is still active and constantly getting new kits, it's the #2 Gunpla line after HG. What you're hearing is whining that we're getting 2 or 3 new kits a year, instead of 5 to 10. The real problem with MG is that they're so large that you quickly run out of shelf space.
>>
Any recommendations for third party Zeon kits 1/100 and larger? MechaArk Dominator looks pretty good.
>>
>>24012341
This helps because light lacquer color work over cured enamel won't damage it. So if I have color separated parts I use the heat chart to my advantage. Most of the time though it's unneeded but if you have a million base colors in lacquer/acrylics and no airbrush it is what it is.
>>24012342
RG Exia is fine, RG Z'Gok is older but amazing, HG Origin RX is good kit, MG as well. If you're in the US, I use Newtype as well as Galactic and never have a problem. Galactic will put some stuff on their ebay storefront on sale from time to time separate of the main website sale.
>>
>>24012349
Initially I asked about the MG Jesta and Jesta Cannon for a total newb and this general just laughed and mocked me and there were a few Anons who said MG is ded.

>>24012348
I read about the Zeta and Sazabi being flimsy as fuck so I ignored them. If MG is not ded I'll consider the Ver Ka version once I'm gud enough. I'll finish and complete this RG RX-78 and my next one will probably be God/Shining Gundam.

>>24012375
I'm lucky to have a Gendum HL store and at least 3 scale model stores that have Gunpla in them. Gundam Base is too far from where I live, wish they plop down here instead of flyover states.
>>
>>24012362
The 1/100 rick doms looked ok. Maybe you can get yourself a black tristar trio going.
>>
>>24012390
Yeah, this general is full of shitposters. While it is true that the MG line is not getting as many new designs as it used to (in the old days they could afford to make kits of fucking G Gundam), it's the only line besides HG that is guaranteed to get new releases every year. Even EG and RG don't get a fraction of the amount of love that MG does.

That being said, MG kits still aren't ideal for beginners because they have huge parts counts and (as before) take up a lot of shelf space, which can come at a premium depending on your living conditions. As a beginner, you don't know for sure that you want to spend this much money and time on the hobby, so a HG kit is ideal in that if you decide that you don't want to dedicate the time and effort after all, or you make a mistake and break a piece, you're only out a $15-25 kit as opposed to something that costs $40-55. (Fixing pieces is possible but usually out of the ability of absolute beginners)

Of course, the other problem is simply that even after 30 years, there are still "only" 230-ish retail MG kits, of which perhaps 80-100 can be reliably found if you scour all available retail resources. This as opposed to HG kits, where virtually every single MS ever put to animation is guaranteed a kit (though quality will always vary since advances in engineering mean that kits made in 2005 can't hold a candle to kits made in 2016, let alone 2026). If there's a design that you absolutely love, odds are that it exists as a HG kit but not as a MG kit. This is further compounded by Bandai's inability to keep up with demand, so it might take a few years for certain kits to be reprinted and circulated.

So, yeah, while MG is far from dead, it's something that you should think a little more carefully about if you're new to the hobby because it's a pretty big step up from HG, which doesn't demand as much commitment.

this doesn't make it any more or less beginner friendly. the amount of effort to clean up an individual part does not vary between MG and HG.
>and take up a lot of shelf space
because a non-newfag suddenly will have a larger home? what a retarded statement.

MGs are no more difficult than HG, they just take more time. Time =/= difficulty.
