-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

== STOLEN GROUPBUILD ==

Build a Mecha or vehicle built by one faction, but change its aesthetics and style to its rival faction! Examples include but are not limited to
>Canon examples of mechs being stolen and used by another group (ie: Casval's Gundam, Feddie Zakus, Ashura Mazinger, etc)
>Designs intended for one faction that were repurposed into a design for another faction (ie: Gerbera Tetra)
>What-if scenarios (ie: A Titans color Zeta Gundam)
>Stylistic interpretation (ie: What would a EFF version of the Z'gok look like?)
When it comes to your build, really make it clear that your mecha is being used by the other side!

Most people say that 3rd party leds are better than better than Bandai’s so basically whatever bullshit you can get off Amazon or aliexpress

>>24043490
It bothers me that there are people who have been in this hobby for years, over a decade even, that still snapbuild without putting even the tiniest effort into posing their robot toys, let alone do additional stuff like panel line, decal, topcoat or painting.
Gunpla is freedom? More like Gunpla is low effort.
>>
>>24043490
I think part of the problem is that even something benign like "Hey that looks cool, it'd look even better if you bought some sandpaper and cleaned up those nubs" is interpreted as the Grand Wizard of /gpg/ burning a cross on your lawn.
>>
>>24043490
"Gunpla is freedom" was supposed to be about creativity, but it's exclusively being used to excuse laziness.
>>
>>24043536
No, the problem is that people are trying to show off these builds at something special of praise worthy. I am a snapshitter through and through, I'll post in progress pictures but never the finished product because unless I paint or do something worth praise, there's no point. it's just another snapshit kit. I guess maybe if I want to discuss if a kit is bad I can post the final result but beyond that, there's no reason.
>>
>>24043543
Still, there is nothing wrong with posting snapped build. I do that frequently with plastic girls, I simply don't paint every single model I build. Like you said the problem starts when said person expects prise for what is essentially equivalent of cozy casual game. I know a guy, who openly just snap and panel line his kits, nothing wrong with that.

The issue is that constructive criticism doesn't last long. Decent people take it and get better and then the constructive criticism stops.
Then you'll get people who post absolute dogshit and spend a week freaking out over someone telling them to thin their paint. They'll regularly do it for years on end and never improve. This makes people treat them like shit because they act like shit.

We do not have the same girlpla scalping problems that japan has. It costs a whole lot more to buy domestically though.
>>
>>24044247
Those things go rather fast. Buy one now if you're looking for one or if you're a scalpnigger, then you might make a quick buck.
My local bandai store got like eight of those from one of their recent shipments. I got one, and the next week, they're all gone.

Strangely enough, it's that one brown sister in a glorified school swimsuit (the one showing off her ass in her artwork) that's been sitting on the shelf there forever. Considering Sestieh's popularity, you'd think another Chocolate sister in a swimsuit no less would go quick, but no, she's just collecting dust there.
>>
>Came to a new hobby store, wonder if I can find some rare kits there.
>Saw nothing but pile of idolmaster kits taking up most of the shelf for 30MS.
Do Bandai just push these cursed kits to oversea retailers to empty their storage?
>>24044252
Siana is a shelf warmer even in Japan. She is one of the older kits so her sculpting is pretty subpar. Sestieh's popularity also comes from those optional parts that require her body and she is a very popular kit for kitbashing.
>>
>>24044273
The problem with the iM@S stuff is that most of their kits are the Jane Idolmaster kits (i.e. their poster girls) and more often than not, they're not the most popular girls in their specific sub-line.
The original main trio is decently popular within their group. But really, they only appeal to oldfags. Million Live (the line Mirai is from) is generally viewed to be the dud of the franchise and even in that group she's of middling popularity. The newer and casual crowd would be more familiar with the Cinderella Girls, Shiny Colors and Gakuen line. But Shiny Colors went full retard by not putting in their most popular girls yet. Cinderella Girls and Gakuen are generally the biggest and most successful iM@S lines and Uzuki and Saki are actually decent picks from as they're one of the more popular poster girls, but there are far more popular/casual bait girls in their respective lines too.

iM@S is horribly mismanaged in 30MS when it could've been one of the most brain dead moneymakers. The series has no shortage of amazing outfits and dresses but they chose to put all the girl in the same basic bitch white dress. They should've just put in the actual moneymaker popular girls or at least put in the iconic outfits. The iM@S sailor swimsuit alone would've easily been a perpetual moneymaking machine.

Main problem with Idolmaster kits in the west is that they are bunch of literallywho. People might recognize original ones just fine but most of them are pretty much same kit with head swapped and brand tax. And how many times you can buy and snap same kit?
>>
>>24044339
That's the thing, even if they're a bunch of literallywho to burgers, the franchise is a goddamn cornucopia of fashion, dresses and outfits. Even if they don't know the character, the pretty outfits can more than speak for themselves. Each idol having her own trademark style that really brings out her charms even to the layman, or at the very least, to make them want to steal that outfit for their own creation.
And Bandai did the brilliant idea of not tapping into said cornucopia of fashion and giving all of them the same boring copypaste outfit at like 30-40% extra price from your typical 30MS kit.
>>
>>24043490
Ah geez, I opened this thread because an upcoming Gundam Assemble event at my LGS has reignited my interest in Gundam-related plastic. They had some 1/144 kits there for cheap that I was wanting to ask and talk about, but then I see this post, and if even r*ddit is pretty tough on people that are just getting started and expect conversations to only be higher level unique digestible content, and the replies here affirm with that, then there isn't really a path forward into the community space for this, huh. Or at least, online.
>>
>>24044357
>People got tired of snapping the same kit so bandai came with a brilliant idea of releasing only the heads for some of the idols.
>they command the same price as a full 30MS kit for 2 hair parts and 6 faceplates.
Some of the idols I liked was only released as head parts and I can't find myself spending that much just for them.
>>
>>24044357
>And Bandai did the brilliant idea of not tapping into said cornucopia of fashion and giving all of them the same boring copypaste outfit at like 30-40% extra price from your typical 30MS kit.

Oh yeah, that too. I understand that mold engineering is not cheap but still, they could release less models that way and rest as head parts but for that price as >>24044373 points out. Japanese fans probably don't mind but west is different. Friendly Local Store owner said that he try not to get any Idolmaster kits anymore, since they don't sell (I'm little disappointed he don't get optional sets for 30MS kits but I guess they don't sell as much as actual girls, too. Body sets released around Neverlia are almost universally shelfwarmers).

Much better seamline management, majority of polycap joints have been replaced by ABS, improved sculpt and has actual clear parts now. It is less unstable than the Bandai kit but not perfect either. The backpack verniers and trigger finger are abit loose

Really though, if you say you are new most of the feedback will be not written that aggressively (besides that one autist in this thread). The main thing that is making everyone shit on that guy is he is begging for praise for doing the bare minimum on an easy kit that a 10 year old could build and doesn't want to hear how to get better.
Post your things here, if there is something you can't figure out how to do better just ask in the post.

Finally finished the Stickler Studio GQ Kampfer kit. It was my first resin kit, and it wasn't that bad, but it survives on super glue. I decided to paint it an off white for reasons now unknown to me, and much of my time was spent shading it, which is a new thing for me for gunpla. I lost the main backpack thruster, which I am trying to correct by pillaging old kits.
Anyway, if someone ever makes a plastic version of this conversion kit, I will not feel morally conflicted buying it.
>>
>>24044539
>it wasn't that bad, but it survives on super glue
That's just how majority of resin kit is.
>>
>>24044539
The balls actually work on this design.
>>
>>24044424
I suggest looking for stores that aren't completely gunpla focused. More generalized hobby stores run more frequent sales.
>>
>>24044485
>he is begging for praise for doing the bare minimum on an easy kit
That is a worrisome reading, thoughst'verbeit. It just seems to be asking for neutrality. Not to be praised, but also to not be actively derided. If this is the inciting comment >>24043713 it also seems to perceive posting your kits as an inherent request for praise or a statement of accomplishment, and so it preemptively refers to them condescendingly.

This is certainly a far cry from the miniatures space, where there is a lot of similar assembly/posing/painting/shading/detailing required for a good model, but there isn't the same assumption when someone posts their 28mm cheapo squad that's just slapped in base paints and not even a squirt of wash to be seen, or someone that sprays, speedpaints, then quickdips. Both already speak inherently well for themselves that they're at an amateurish level and likely don't think it's good, or isn't currently in that artistic state of mind and isn't posting for artistic purposes/kudos.
>>
>>24044587
>it also seems to perceive posting your kits as an inherent request for praise
Why else would you post them? They are mass produced toys. You are not the first one to have them, you are not the last, you are not a unique individual with a 1 of 1 item. If the reasoning is that you want to participate in a community, nothing is stopping you from joining into discussions, praising or shitting on people who actually do paint, etc.
>>
>>24044587
It's reddit. People exclusively post there for asspats and praise.
>>
>>24044588
>Why else would you post them?
Cuz you just like talking about them, and posting that you got 'em is a good excuse to
>They are mass produced toys.
Yeah, but like, they're pretty nifty mass produced toys. People already talk a lot about other mass produced toys that aren't nearly as nifty
>You are not the first one to have them, you are not the last, you are not a unique individual with a 1 of 1 item
Yeah but everyone already knows that. That don't got nothin to do with nothin, unless you perceive all posts to effectively be a form of content or whatever, and thus they gotta be special to justify themselves in an attention market. Do you not just enjoy talking about things for the sake of it?
>>
>>24044596
You could do all of this without making a new thread based on a completely uncustomed build that's covered in nubs.
>>
>>24044603
Who said anything about making a new thread?
>>
>>24044606
The guy complaining about being told to clean his nubs made a new thread to post the pictures of his model and complain.
>>
There are genuinely people on Reddit that think nubs look good because they look like mechanical detail.
>>
>>24044612
I'm not seeing a thread in the catalog, unless it already got pruned. Unless you're calling that r*ddit post a thread, to which that seems kinda iffy since as far as I know, their board structure isn't really comparable, and if it's not some hitherto unseen model show-off thread, then I think that muddies your accusation since the image is being used as part of discussion and calls for neutrality rather than farming for kudos.
>>
>>24044624
they don't think that they say it to cope
>>
>>24044625
We're talking about the redditor. All they care about is asspats. The site exists just for people to farm for validation. They are not serious people.
>>
>>24044596
>Cuz you like talking about them
I talk about gunpla all the time, hence why I'm here. Hell I'm talking about them right now! Do you see me posting my snapshit?
>>
>>24044629
>Do you see me posting my snapshit
I dunno, we're anonymous so I wouldn't know. Have you posted snapbuilds? Would you like to share some images of your snapbuilds? I'd be interested.
>>
>>24044634

>so I wouldn't know

>>
>>24044636
>I'm not interested in posting them for you, because they're just snapbuilds
That's a shame
>You're incapable of looking at the conversation we're having to see my posts lack images
I assumed you were referring to the thread as a whole. I wasn't sure if you meant like, you were claiming credit for the guy who put together the frame, or the guy who still calls himself a snapshidder despite adding details, or what.

Are you alright? You seem to be getting a little heated, or at least curt.
>>
>>24044643
>That's a shame
Why? I may as well post images from dalong.
>You seem to be getting a little heated
What's your problem? You can't have a conversation with someone disagreeing with you without projecting emotions onto them?
>>
you guys are replying to a nigga who just wants to throw words and inserted himself in the discussion without bothering to check what it's about
let him yap by himself
>>
>>24044646
>Why?
You said you talk about Gunpla all the time, so I assumed for you, they wouldn't be shelf toys but instead your WIP models, and so you'd have a personal spin to talk about regarding them
>What's your problem? You can't have a conversation with someone disagreeing with you without projecting emotions onto them?

Looks nice, always had the question on how much sanding do resin kits require? I know many of them reuse Bandai kits so don’t the makers measure it out and such? Or do they just scale and print the pieces then fuck we ball to consumers?
>>
>>24044667
>how much sanding is required
Required for what specifically? If a part doesn't fit, you have to sand it until it does. It's not like there's a set amount.
>>
>tired with the Gundam stuff i opened a koto kit instead

Started a snap build of the MG Stark Jegan. I didn't realize how much differed from the normal one even outside just altered panels to allow attaching the armor. The whole front of the chest is different.
Also I did a better job painting the inside of the visor on this one than the normal Jegan which I'm pretty happy with.
It also came with a great sheet of waterslides with unit numbers and markings on it. Kinda want to strip the clear coat off my normal Jegan's shoulder and shield to give him some. Pretty sure I'm too lazy to actually do so.
>>
>>24044760
You don't need to strip the clearcut, you can just hit it with a gloss coat > decal > matte coat again on that section. It'll be fine.

I've gone back and forth on MG Stark Jegan, I wish they didn't make so many variants of the fucking thing. I know if I buy one they'll magically decide to release an MG Akitaka Stark and I'll explode.
>>
>>24044763
Hmm that would be a little easier than stripping. Also after I posted I started wondering why "Stark" and not "Full Armor"
>>
>>24044769
Interestingly there's a few variations of the Jegan that add some outright extra armour in the ECOAS boys, plus the Heavy Equipment and Stark types, but no full armour. Who knows? Japs are honestly great at naming shit when they hit the right balance of random English word usage unlike Full Frontal who memed himself but that's funny in its own way,Stark Jegan is badass and demands attention while FA Jegan is tired and worn out and commands no respect. I don't know if they pulled the name from something or what, that's true for tons of shit, but it's a badass name.

You guys have any tips for seam welding? I've tried with both normal Tamiya and Extra-Thin (and Mr Cement S which sucks), and it never seems like I can get that perfect "squelch" of plastic that I have to sand away. Most of the time the seam is only partially removed and still uneven. I feel like a dumbass for struggling with something so basic but it never fails to give me trouble.
Would it help to sand/cut the pegs a bit so I can push them together a little more tightly? That's all I can think to do.
>>
>>24044960
How much cement are you using?
>>
>>24044960
Just use Tamiya seam welding putty.
>>
>>24044968
Just a good long sweep of the brush I guess, I don't want it pouring out everywhere
When I try extra-thin I normally put the parts close together first and try to sweep the brush along the sides before pushing together since I know it evaporates quick
