-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

== STOLEN GROUPBUILD ==

Build a Mecha or vehicle built by one faction, but change its aesthetics and style to its rival faction! Examples include but are not limited to
>Canon examples of mechs being stolen and used by another group (ie: Casval's Gundam, Feddie Zakus, Ashura Mazinger, etc)
>Designs intended for one faction that were repurposed into a design for another faction (ie: Gerbera Tetra)
>What-if scenarios (ie: A Titans color Zeta Gundam)
>Stylistic interpretation (ie: What would a EFF version of the Z'gok look like?)
When it comes to your build, really make it clear that your mecha is being used by the other side!

Progress on my White Dingo force for the MSGBS rework. RGM 79SP2(stand in for the expensive RGM 79G sniper kit; but it has the right gun(shoutout Project V Hobby) and was the sniper RGM for that team). Considering i was a bit worried about having primed it black before deciding to go with the WD scheme it turned out pretty alright. Legs are glued in a fixed pose; but torso and arms are free moving. Added dry brush edge highlights and wear along with a few transfer slides from the RX78GP03 transfer and an N scale train letter sheet.

Sorry to be annoying spamming this, but because this is the model kit thread I thought this would be a good place to put it. Someone made a website where you can paint and assemble a phantom crash (Xbox 2005) mech using all the game assets and I just wanted to see what you guys would make. My garage in the game had like ten mechs because I just loved painting and making stuff. The paint (texture) feature only works on desktop supposedly so mobile users can deselect texture in the view section and see what they’re making otherwise it’s plain black. I didn’t make this I just simply think this is a cool project.

The paint schemes in the game were made by the creator of Ma.k which I see in these threads every time I visit

Six hours later, I have finished assembling and panel lining the internal frame for the legs of the 1/100 Kshatriya.

My take so far: Its a surprisingly solid kit. Haven't run into any weird mold injection issues you typically see with other third party Chinese kits. The joints are stiff but have enough give for articulation, which is good considering the weight theyll have to support. Overall, like it so far

Sir it's a toy and not a kit. Go get yourself some Tamiya kits, if you really want to build a real kit.

>>24061942

If a snapfit kit requires some works to make it looks better then it gets a pass. Chinese kits pander to the most casual among the casuals which annoys me.

>>24061943
Bandai themselves are already guilty at that. But atleast old HG exists, stuff that looks unbearable if left unpainted.
>>
>>24061957
>stuff that looks unbearable if left unpainted.
This mindset is worse than "mods will fix it" tier. I'm glad that bandai despite all their scum and villainy do not adopt this and do make some efforts to add more detail and increase the quality of their model kits.

Weathered with washing and dry brushing, then matted it down. The dark candy purple was really cool and I'm not sure which I like more but now it definitely feels heavier and realer. I painted the lights with fluo pink over silver and inside all the thrusters with fluo clear so they glow blue under a blacklight. Last time I did any weathering was like 3 years ago so there's definitely places I could improve but it's not too bad.

After ruminating on my pile of Silver Bullets an Doven Wolves I've decided on a course of action for two of the Silver Bullets. I've got two extra Byarlant ass thrusters so they're gonna get them and some Byarlant-inspired shoulders. Want to change its backpack but I don't want to do much more work than the shoulders, so not sure what I want to do there. Byarlant's big back thrusters are pretty simple to emulate so I might end up going that route. I've also got a lot of Hazel backpack bits so maybe I'll use one of those and some fuel tanks, I dunno.

Based SV. According to the credits, he didn’t design thr mechs, it was some other dude- and instead he got credit for the numerous paint schemes. some of them are really cool and almost feel like ma.k

I suspect even if he wasn’t designing the mechs he was giving some input or advice at least. My ultimate hope is some people start using the ripped models to make 3d printable parts and that way you can customize and paint them in real life however you like.

I’m always impressed how before the days of 3d modeling these Japanese guy could make geometrically complex designs on paper and have everything line up right and not be distorted. I have no idea how it’s possible - their brain just is built differently I suspect.

But yeah the guy who made the ma.k stuff has a really unique style and it’s probably part of why I liked phantom crash so much. As a kid in some Japanese collectible shop I saw some little ma.k figures and thought they were really cool and in retrospect I understand why now after playing phantom crash and subconsciously maybe finding the designs familiar.
>>
>>24062651
I read a Yokoyama interview somewhere and the guy said human feel comfortable when looking at an egg and might try to pick it up, unlike the spiky objects which human tend to avoid so he purposely designed Ma.K mechs and power armors to be resemble eggs so it would be pleasing on your hands when you try to build one. Ma.K's charm might not be for everyone but once you are into it, it hypnotizes you.

I like these phantom crash guys because they keep the bulbous carapace appearance while still having enough mechanical joint clearance. Gonna have to find an emulator for this game.

It is not bad fitment, the fault is due to the extra articulation to help it kneel/increase height. Plenty of 30mm kits have this problem too.

Omega based. When i played I beat the last boss using pic related with some
Edgy black paint scheme. (Paint texture doesnt work on mobile) I had an active camo thay lasted for a really long time, the knife was upgraded and so was the sniper which only held like 20 shots. the last stretch of the game kept filtering me so this was my anti boss SV. Without the paint it’s a bit boring.

You can join their discord and ask because a few people are bringing that up and at least one person said they have a script for ripping assets. I don’t usually join discords but for really fringe mech games I do sometimes. (Like metal fatigue the RTS for PC)

My dream is to get like 5 or 10 of those system base style garage dioramas and hook them up and to have custom phantom crash mechs lined up. Also if you got some scale buildings that would be pretty sick too.

According to the phantom crash Reddit (I don’t have an account just end up there a lot from gooogle searches) they have a version working on PC right now you can play. I haven’t tried it but some people in the comments make it sound like in runs really well and has some options not in the base game.

There is a sequel I never beat called SLAI which is like a phantom crash generation 2, and supposedly they’re experimenting trying to get those parts in the first game as an option in that pc decomp/recomp.
I have only played it on console but I’m sure it will look reallly nice on pc however you play it bevause it already looked really good imo on the original xbox

Back on unit 1, puttied up the shoulder and cut out some of the arm. Ditching the wire-guided mechanism and returning to a MK V construction, basically, lore wise. Think I'll put some cables on the front and maybe beam sabre racks on backs. Shoulder sits a bit high I think, I'll have to fix that. Ditching the shield gun cus I don't like it and repurposing it as a bazooka. I'll chop the flares on the feet off to pull those back closer to MK V spec too. Though their inspo is Byarlant the shape of the shoulder is feeling pretty MK IV and that's an incredibly happy accident, I was gonna carve a notch out near the torso like Byarlant but I think I'll keep it as is now. I've also got some extra Byarlant armpit flaps originally from the Custom so I'll use those in the shoulder as channels for the thrusters up there.

Mecha joints should be massive once you realize the amount of weight and stress they'll be put under and that's not even accounting for lifting, punching or kicking anything with force. They need more obvious muscle like pistons and hydraulics to power the movement too. I'm tired of expecting to believe that spindly gray sticks can support a 60 ton machine. Pic unrelated.

The freedom's issue is the way it articulates makes it really easy to stress the joint if you aren't careful, it's less an issue of thinness(more or less the same size as most MGs that use peg joints) and more an issue of funky articulation and user error.

The Gundam Base Minneapolis Grand Opening Was Incredible!

What an awesome experience at The Gundam Base grand opening at the Mall of America!
First, huge shoutout to my amazing wife! I had to work, so she got in line at 7 AM and secured a wristband before the 10 AM opening. We swapped when I arrived, getting me into the first 100 people through the doors! Definitely married the right person!
The event was incredibly well organized. The wristband system kept things running smoothly, and getting to be part of the official press photos and personally welcomed by Bandai Namco executives was such a cool experience.
The exclusive kit selection was absolutely out of this world! I also loved the one-of-each-kit-per-person limit, giving more fans a fair shot at grabbing their favorites.
My haul:
MG GM Sniper Custom (Gundam Base Limited)
RG Unicorn Gundam Perfectibility
MGSD Gundam Aerial
Gundam Base Limited Haro-themed kit
Gundam Side-F Action Base 5
Beyond the kits, seeing so many Gunpla fans come together was incredible. The energy, excitement, and sense of community made the whole experience something special.
Bandai Namco absolutely knocked this opening out of the park! So excited to finally have a Gundam Base here in Minnesota.
My wallet is lighter, my backlog is bigger, and I regret absolutely nothing!
FREEDOM IS GUNPLA!
Who else made it to the opening? What did you pick up?

Just a little more progress, gotta go grab lower grit sandpaper since I'm out and apoxie sculpt is a machine that turns sandpaper into clogged sandpaper. I cut out clearance for axial forearm rotation because it's my fetish, it has such little clearance it can only manage about a 20 degree bend or so. Gonna try to get a little more out of it by extending the arm joint slightly, it's bent as far as it can be in this picture, but it's workable enough for this build as is so I'm not sweating it.

Got this done

The build was smooth enough, joints are tight but without needing to sand anything.

Ended up painting the missing red stripes on the neck. You don't really have to as there are plenty of scenes have those missing.

the kit is a bit off from the lineart. I am not sure if it's just an artistic interpretation or they based off of an actual scene but they made the red on the shins 3d instead of being flat. The torso is also a bit small and more oval in the cross section. In comparison to the coming revol or even the POSE+ those are a lot more fat and drum shaped with the torso.

the instruction asks you to duplicate the leg construction but if you do that, the right feet will have less articulation, so if you don't mind showing the hollow section forward make sure you turn one of the joint piece the other way on the right to get all range of movements.

Any news of getting getter 2 or 3 or even the dragons?

>Why don't you get POSE+ or the coming revol getter?

Have you seen the prices on those?
I don't know if it is the subject matter or just the facts of life in 2026, there almost no none decent sized collectible toys that are low to mid priced anymore for niche shows anymore. And even with the higher price toys, they are often full of QCs.

I consistently get cleaner cuts by just snipping as close as possible to the plastic with regular nippers
Filing the double cut method in the bs hobby gaslight drawer, wasted too much time doing this
It can join "cut all the pegs at an angle to make it easier to disassemble", that thing was useless too
>>
>>24064787
It's obscure as shit, poorly distributed and expensive. I've only seen one store do a shipment of Ma.K in 10 years and they never restocked. Same goes for Kotobukiya girls, meanwhile you can go in any LHS and get Gundam, Assemble and 30MS no problem. Bandai's strategy has always been drowning out their competition with sheer scale of production.

Original Strike Freedom is too different from Type II to make a conversion worthwhile/too contrasting from the older design. At that stage, you'd be doing a completely new armor, which misses the whole point of a conversion kit.
Even if the goal is to make one of those extra-greebled chink conversions like the one for the Nu, you're better off using a modern chassis like the 2016 Freedom.

As I put together more of the 30MM sets, I'm beginning to see just how shit some of these are designed. It's like when a director of a movie insists that the monster have spikes and shit that would, under normal circumstances, hamper their movement. For example, the fucking long range sniper option for the alto is garbage. Not only does it limit range of movement of the arms, but the dumbfuck shield thing can't even be held in any meaningful action pose way because it hits the poorly designed shoulder pads. Then the normal Baskyrotto and its fucking shield not fitting well, or the fact that its arms are restricted of range of motion by its bulky upper torso. Just disappointing instances of "cool" being pushed instead of "functionally cool". End rant.

Phantom crash man here—- if you think those are interesting there was a Reddit thing I found on google where one of the old designers who made the knxex mechwarrior stuff showed some I produced prototypes he has- and talks about how the line got cancelled because it was violent and how he snuck it through which is why it happened at all. Based if you ask me. and as we know they did titanfall later so they canceled the mechwarrior knex for nothing.

Also—- I think joyride made some semi buildable kits thay were diecast. I think they were the big diecast figures they made but released in an unassembled state or something.

Anyway just like I’d love it if someone made the 3d models of phantom crash 3d printable to paint—a dream of mine is for someone to make accurate 3d printable mechwarrior 3 and 4 miniatures to paint. I know the textures do a lot of heavy lifting on the old mechwarrior games but it would be a fun challenge.

Since the series premise is customizing your own mech by rearranging and kitbashing parts, I think it makes sense that they would focus on the "cool" part and throw functional out of the window. A lot of parts and optional packs feel wobbly and loosely fit because of that.

How do you all deal with burnout?

This is my pile of gunpla I built then dropped when it came to clean up and detail work.

I feel like ive bought all this specialized equipment to overcompensate for a lack of skill. And im finding it hard to go back to building or playin with the models. Fancy nippers, scribbers, sanding sticks, brushes, paints, markers, mats, and everything else.

Yet... alll i see is nipper marks, sanding scratches, plastic dust, uneven connections, ink smears from trying to panel line, gouge marks from trying a scribber, snapped connectors, and coats of paint so thick you cant tell what the piece is anymore.

Am i just losing the love of just sitting down and building?
>>
>>24065208
I think you shouldve practiced on some spoons and other trash before painting stuff you care about. I didnt touch a model until after painting like 10 plastic bottles, spoons and some cardboard. Also if you lack motivation you kinda just have to force yourself to do things. It sucks but nobody else is gonna help you. Sometimes life is about just getting up and helping yourself.
>>
>>24065208
For me I need to break stuff into smaller tasks if I’m just not feeling like doing it but the boxes are there bugging me. Once you get some stuff built and painted or whatever and it’s done you need to display it and not have it tucked away so it gives you positive reinforcement to make more when you see it.

Someone make the close up of all the model kits thrown into the box haphazardly the next threads OP image kek

As others have said, pace yourself. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good, either. We tend to be our own worst critics and it's extremely easy in a hobby like this to hyperfocus on where we fucked up and I've felt the urge to give up and throw out a project because of fuck ups - picrel. Then I realise it's only my second time fully painting a kit and I've at least gained some knowledge in what to do next time. So now I want to keep going despite the mistakes and keep this kit around as a sign of my progress.
>>
>>24065429
>Don't let perfect be the enemy of good
it's actually the reverse
>>
>>24065440
Maybe, but in order to reach that perfect you'll need to make some fuck ups along the way to know what and what not to do. Better that you do good and have something by the end to show off, however flawed - it's yours. As opposed to the immediate strive for perfection that can mean you never start a project let alone finish one.

My advise is ignore white altogether. the laser copiers will print transparent anyway, so homemade decals work best on white surfaces.
A good mid level print shop should have white toner. Ask them what colour they prefer in the graphic to represent white. It my experience its a specific shade of pink.
If you must print white, make the graphic in colour with out white, then make a white silhouette graphic separately. Apply the white decal first, then the colour decal overtop.
Avoid white decal paper unless you are a masochist and like cutting out the outline of the graphic at a tiny scale.

Initial sanding, need another layer of putty but I decided to carve a panel liner for reference just to see what I thought. Scratchbuilt some simple replacements for the incom holders that will just be thruster units now. Been thinking about the head and not sure what I want to do with it. Think I'll snip off the v-fin, but not sure about the rear antennae. I might keep one of them. The right one's definitely gonna interfere with the gun and posing. I dunno.

It'll have symmetrical shoulders I just haven't repeated it yet, I tend to make changes one side at a time then duplicate them when done. But the cannon's gonna keep it feeling pretty lopsided so I like the idea anyway, I'll try out some positioning with a spare head.

Finished the gerberra. I do not like the other gun so I'm not posing it with it.
This thing needs an unreal amount of detail painting.

who's selling the clear version?

Chinks give 00 a lot of love lately. Surely Bandai will do even better with its 20th anniversary next year.

Hmm how many do I buy? 3?
>>

This thing is almost done, I just need to do some touch up painting on part of the arms. I ended up sharpening most of the points on it, I had some trouble with plasticard/runner coming off some of the pieces so I ended up using superglue with accelerator which I preferred for this application. Besides a decal flying off the knee I think it's ok, in retrospect I think a darker green and maybe doing a pearl white over the armor would've worked better.

Based dad trolling his autistic son

My son's asleep, which other kits of his should I start building

Sell all his kits, and when he wakes up, tell him to stop being such a loser nerd and pick a chad hobby like playing sports.

You're not my dad. My dad's a huge nerd that likes building rocket models and winds the day down by watching TNG.

The only real problems PGU Nu got is the atrocious design and overpriced LED unit that does fuck all. If someone's willing to dish out 600 bucks, or whatever's the price for it, for such a toy then they simply don't notice these problems

I hope you end up in a nursing home. leave your autistic son alone!

Based oldschool zaku 1 enjoyer. Did you end up sanding the elbow and knee joints? I did recently while painting mine grey and will need to do a better job because I rounded the joints a little too much. But I did make it so there was enough clearance for a paint. First time sanding joints and I probably was too aggressive. Where did you get the eye and gun jewel? I got some from Walmart but theyre cut like gems so look kind of retarded.

Did you seam weld the shins? I don’t see the gap there. Looks really good. I want to learn how to do some camo so I can use it on this exact kit.
>>
>>24066291
That’s really funny. My dad was supportive of all my model kit crap because when he was younger he made model kits also but of simple shit presumably like cars or whatever. He psssed a few years ago and it sucks because he liked making and building anything in general, just was creative, and it would have been fun to see him react to my new kits I made that look much better than anything I made when I was younger. We watched the full gundam the origin series before he passed and he wanted to watch the movie with the zaku on the island but we never got around to it. He was spoiling it for himself watching clips on YouTube.
Anyway I’m rambling but enjoy your cool dad while you have him anon
>>
>>24066355
By didnt get around to it I mean I don’t think it was available to stream in English before he passed. I might watch it eventually but without him it will probably suck

Why is your dad touching your stuff? I'm glad my parent's 1) don't live with me and 2) don't give a shit about my hobbies enough to attempt to participate in them. The occasional "that's nice dear" is good enough.
