New Snow Ponies thread
We need more of these, we need more ponies inspired by a combination of North American Indians, Inuit and Norse cultures featuring a mix of there architecture, art, tools and societies.
>>
>>42431651
it would be better if it was british ponies instead
>>
I've always liked the idea of a 3d platformer / slice of life game set in the snowpony village / tundra mountain range, but I haven't really kept up with these threads since they were first made. What kind of activities would (you) like to see? And which snowponies should be in the game? I only really know these three

true, no one writes like that, sounds like what an ai would output, so it's possible he had an AI write it and tweaked it manually (saying this because he used there instead of their, good ais dont really make grammar mistakes)

Opinions on snowponers farming algae/seeweed as an additional source of food?
I don't think I seen it being mentioned itt.
>>
>>42432026
Yes.
Not itt, but there's a bit of lore in Agates story about seals being friends rather than food, and they help by chasing fish into nets, as well as bringing clumps of seaweed to ponies.
Farming seaweed, though, no clue how thatd work for primitive societies.
>>
>>42431759
There was already a fishing game for this general, and it sucked.
>>
>>42431759
Cute ideas, that's a lotta fishing.
A fishing platformer could be fun, you explore and jump around to reach rare fish spots, like climbing mountains for skyfish or running along a river to catch schools with your net. Loop is platforming, snag fish, race home, trade gear, unlock tougher spots. Spear doubles as grapple hook mid air and lets you take down bigger fish to haul back. Net can be used as a trampoline. Sled... makes you go fast and keep momentum down slopes.

Village is main hub. You trade your fish to snowpones for better gear (sled upgrades, stronger nets) and unlock shortcuts so you can go further for other fish spots. You take quests here on the fish board. You have to make it home before nightfall or a snowstorm makes you freeze and die in a few minutes. Also hidden village secrets you can find by exploring, like sneaking into huts at night.

I'm mostly stuck figuring out how to naturally mix daily pony interactions with traversal and fishing so none of it feels like a bunch of separate minigames tacked on together. And making the ponies feel more alive.

No there wasn't. It never got finished.

Maybe they scoop up algae with woven plant nets when they see algae blooms, dry it out and use it as a spice

Harvesting seaweed is very easy all you need to do is walk along the shore at low tide and pick it up that's literally it but if you wanted to make your life more difficult you cold dive down in deadly cold water with a knife to cut it free.

I have basically said this in the last thread but there diet should be more then normal fish. It's been talked about before. You're just badly lacking knowledge about the north. There's no snow all year round. Summers do exist. Currently, agriculture in Alaska produces obscenely huge vegetables because of the polar summers where the sun just doesn't set.
Look up "giant Alaskan vegetables" and you'll get loads of pictures like this one.

Not sure, maybe the village doesn't have to be platformy.
>>42433361
>How would snowpones power the sled on flat ground? and doesn't require full animal taming AI
I'd say the pones would pull their own sleds, not use pack animals.

Perhaps it could be a "preparing for winter" type of thing. Something bad happened, and now you need to help the others survive the cold months. At first, it's a repetitive gameplay - you fish, gather supplies, help out ponies in your community. And after a few weeks, winter hits. Depending on how well/bad you did, things can go either way, from the village expanding to even ponies dying due to insufficient food (if you want to go that route).

>>42431707
>And which snowponies should be in the game? I only really know these three
Those three are fine. Salmon Run would fit a fishermare quite well, I think.
>>

I think a completely frozen world like the north pole is very limiting so not a good idea but also another name for Snow Ponies is supposed to be Taiga Ponies witch is the name of there environment. I can imagine some of them choosing to go as far north as then can like the Inuit but not all of them.

Snowpones are based on yakutian horses (originally), so I always saw them as being in a place like the sakha republic, where their summer lasts for like 30 days at 4 to 16 c, and ground is permafrost, agriculture is basically impossible there even with 24/7 sun. Apparently potatoes do grow in central yakutia though
>>
>>42439529
These breeds are commonly known as Norse breeds as that is there origin, the vikings needed horses that could survive in the cold but they now thrive wherever it's cold so I think it's best not to limit ourselves to the yakutian.

Also I think they could make there own green houses, the making of glass should be possible for them.
>>
>>
>>42439578
They're actually unrelated breeds. Both started off from normal horses and adapted to the cold separately.
You're right small hoof blown glass panes are possible, but keeping it warm in -40c winters would take huge amounts of fuel. Pre industrial glass is brittle and insulates poorly. The sun is also low in the sky and days are too short to support growth in winter.
They'd need to hunt like a whale per day to fuel greenhouses with whale oil

>Snowpones power their own sleds
This is so obvious, they're ponies. How did I not think of that?

>Preparing for winter
Yes, I like this idea. It adds long term stakes beyond the daily get back before night cycle and adds good stoeytelling potential

>Village not platformy
Why not have a platformy village? The goal is to unify platforming, fishing and village, so it felt natural to do it this way. If movement is fun, everything should build from it.
>>
>>42434579
The real question is whether they eat land mammals. They're clearly omnivores and have no qualms eating fish so where do they draw the line? Hares? Reindeer? A seal is practically a fish...

i think they just use mica not glass, been used in russia for a long time and low tech. only need chisel to separate the layers, like 90% transparent. For greenhouse just dig deep pit and manure at bottom for heat, with mica roof for sun, get maybe 2 months more of growing so 90 days radish kale potatoe peas etc quick growing crops

In Victorian England they were able to grow pineapples in a horse dung heated greenhouse. If you were to double up the windows so there was a small air space between two plates of glass/ mica this would improve the R-value greatly and then all you need is a good sealant like pitch or even just clay mixed with plant fibers.
>>
>>42442021
also if there's a coal deposit near the surface or a tar pond then theirs an easy way to make tons of heat.

good point, warmth shouldnt be an issue
the main issue theyd face is getting enough light for plant growth in the yakutian spring and autumn. The sun is very low in the sky, so both south wall and roof of the greenhouse would need to be made of double mica. Mica isn't perfectly clear so doubling it makes light problem worse. So they need a very skilled mica maker, as well as decent muscovite,of which there is some amount in yakutia. they could make like 0.1mm mica panes and add desicants to prevent fogging and get as much light as possible. Then patch every air leak with tar and put a warm quilt on it at night to keep it warm
Maybe they'd get 5 or 6 months of decent growth? Beyond mid autumn theres probably just not enough light

Overall this whole idea baffles me. Everything about snowponies have been about living WITHIN the harsh nature, thriving on its terms. Living tightly in thick log cabins, conserving sparse resources and heat during the long winter, and that closeness which living like that produces, is also central part of their culture. All creatures of northern lands, whether it's people or animals gather resources and food for the winter, and you're here trying to force the nature and make some lowtech greenhouses with iron age tools that would keep warm during nights that go as low as -40? I'm sorry but concept of greenhouses and such are kinda antithesis for everything I like about snowponies and the setting.
>>42439529
>summer lasts for like 30 days at 4 to 16 c, and ground is permafrost, agriculture is basically impossible there even with 24/7 sun.
It's not that bad and extreme everywhere. The ground can't be in permafrost and season must be longer than 30 days if you can grow potatoes. And they have agriculture there. It's hard and the season is short so need to grow crops which thrive in such conditions so no corn for you, and the amount of produce is also small compared to southern lands. That's the reason I like the idea that snowponies compliment their diet with fish. But it's pure misinformation to say there's nothing growing there.

considering that every person living off grid in Alaska has at least one small green house it seems to me more likely than not that the Snow Ponies would at some point develop the technology to make there own and the main purpose is not to grow crops to full size but to get them from seed to seedling so in the spring they have a head start on the short growing season.

Depends on the tribe. Igloos were only temporary winter shelters for long hunting expeditions, people didn't live in them all year round - again, it's not an eternal winter there.
Bigger ones - perhaps fortified, perhaps only for winter when the predators get bold.
>Visible magic stuff (like wards,totems)
Yes.

So my take on the whole greenhouse debate is that there is simply no way to grow enough food with them in an efficient way so them just being used to grow plats to a small size and then transplanting them outside makes the most sense.

It is theoretically possible to grow crops to full size but it would take a building like a christian cathedral because hat is the only building design I know of that can let in enough light and be strong enough to hold up to winter storms and be something they could actually build but of course this would take a ton of work so if such thing was built it would likely be a holy site where they worship a god of summer and farming.

I like the idea of them living in log cabins but given that there all about making things I would think that they would be more creative then to all live the same way so here are some alternatives.

Igloos- This one is obvious but if some choose to live far enough north it's the only option.

Ice caves- Cutting a home into a glacier like a ice hotel would work for those living in the mountains.

Stilt Homes- A cabin on legs is good if your living in a swamp or flood plane and you can fish off your porch.

Hill home- Basically a hobbit hole. Earth is good at regulating temperature.

DONE

Part 1
During the most powerful winter storm in generations a village of Snow Ponies had their cabins destroyed, they were torn apart by strong winds leaving the ponies out in the cold witch normally wouldn’t be a big problem giver their thick coats but the storm was so cold even the Snow Ponies would soon die and the winds so strong it caused whiteout conditions. Fortunately, there chief was smart and brave so she quickly rallied her tribe together and as quickly as they could, gathered what supplies they could salvage from the damaged cabins and storage buildings and left for a nearby cave. The cave served as cold storage keeping food from going bad in the summer and continued to store food in the winter as well even though there was plenty of cold to go around in those months. The mouth of the cave was covered by a set of double doors made of thick hard wood boards, reinforced by riveted iron bands and on the outside covered with iron spike and fitted with an enchanted lock. Around the door was an arch of large stone blocks fitted together with tung and grove no mortar required. All this was to keep out not just thieves but predators that would love an easy meal. The ponies made it to the cave to find the doors covered with a hill of snow. One of the shamans moved it to the side easily with a spell allowing the chief to place her hoof on the lock which glowed and unlocked magically allowing the door to easily swing open. The ponies hurried inside and the chief closed the door turning to cave pitch black as there was no windows or any other source of light. The shaman ponies cast spells creating balls of light that hovered inches from there hooves well the others shook off the snow and dug through there bags for oil lamps and candles. Meanwhile the chief was examining a device near the door. A shaft ran from the floor to the ceiling with four spokes sticking out from it like a wheel. She gave one of the spokes a shove and the shaft began to rotate. Soon due to the marvel that is Snow Pony engineering a large timber banded with iron began to drop from the ceiling on a chain and slowly slid itself into place in four brackets two of which were made of iron and fitted to the backs of the doors well the other two were made of stone and built into the arched doorway.
>>
>>42481727
Part 2
Hours pass and the ponies try there best to stay calm and comfortable but there’s no way to build a fire without a fireplace or even ventilation in the cave and with the winds howling outside shacking the doors and their minds filled with thoughts of all they have lost there is little sleep or even rest coming. Suddenly the oldest and frailest of the shamans falls into a trance her eyes roll back in her head and her cutie mark glow and she jumps up twisting her body in strange ways her age should not allow. The others look on hoping it’s a good sign. The mineral seems in the rock around the begins to glow and the space is filled with a rainbow of light then suddenly the shaman runs to the back of the cave where she punches the wall. It shatters and rock falls to the ground followed by the shaman herself. The others run to her aid to find the trance is over and she is fine they also see that on the other side of the now destroyed wall is a huge cave with tunnels running off in all directions this space is also filled with a rainbow of light from mineral seems but also from large crystal formations as well. The shaman says that she’s had a vision from one of there gods, the god of earth, of soil and rock of crystals and metals and she says he has taken pity on us and thus has given us a new home and we may live here for as long as we wish. The magic quickly faded, the caves returning to darkness but the ponies were compelled to explore this new place and found it strange but beautiful and warm and even found an underground lake constantly being refilled with fish from a powerful river. The chief decides to take a vote and unanimously they decide to make this their new home permanently. The storm ends and those that died are pulled from there collapsed homes and burned and what is left of the buildings is reused in the caves to make this new space a home.

This is the origin story of the Snow Ponies who chose to live in caves.

These are looking great. It's funny how many images you can get out of a snow theme.

How do you plan on not losing sight of your foal? Red scarf like Niveous or something else?

That sounds like the best and most practical idea.

I wouldn't put anything on my foal, since the white fur is a big advantage in hiding from predators and monsters

But did Dash stay long enough to become a snow pony?

My plush is here :DD she will be at mare fair and I will try to get some good pictures with her, say hi if you see her

I thought snowponies were pescitarians, but it looks like they're also opportunistic with meat. Guess he must've smelled pretty enticing

Yo, this new Long Dark update is fire!
Why has no one tried to combine TLD and Snow Ponies yet?

What's that?
>>
>>42521607
that would be fun
>>
Snow poner bump.
>>
>>42521607
This is the third or fourth pic where snowpone eyes glow in the dark. I wonder what caused this to develop? It's certainly not an adaptation for survival. If anything it makes them more vulnerable to predators.
>>
>>42523008
Glow in the dark eyes would be pretty useful in the far north. It could help them locate each other from long distances during the months long nights.

Also in blizzards , at close range it could help prevent the group from separating even in daylight

Well, in The Long Dark during Aurora all animals starts glowing not only eyes. It's makes to show its not natural effect. Also it makes predators super aggressive and powers up all electrical equipment that was fried by emp from this event before hand.

Thanks! Gonna try draw in more snow ponies in screenshots.

Overwhelming cuteness is a hell of a drug.
