Most citizens of Equestria have never heard of Hayville, or if they have, regard it as a myth. A number of texts, secured deep within the private library of Princess Celestia reveal that Hayville was indeed once a real location. It's downfall, sourced from these same carefully guarded texts, is told here for the first time.

Background

Hayville was founded some 200 years A.C. (after Celestia) and fell in approx. 590 A.C. It's former location - now untamed forest which has reclaimed the land - is some 120 km northeast of the present day town of Ponyville. Hayville at the time was located in fertile valley. By 350 A.C. it was ruled by Queen Satinhoof, a benevolent ruler who oversaw a bustling community of some 3000 ponies. A surviving census recorded in 380 A.C. gives a population total of 3,150 with 2,327 mares and 823 stallions, a sex ratio roughly consistent with current Equestria. As with current Equestria, the sex ratio meant that many mares would take multiple mates, and/or enter into lesbian relationships, although as now monogamous heterosexual pairings were not uncommon.

1,345 were Earth Ponies, 987 were Unicorns, 817 were Pegasi, and a single one - Queen Satinhoof - was Alicorn. Again, these ratios roughly correspond with current Equestian demographics.

The Portal Opens

Sometime around 400 A.C. - the exact date being lost to time - a magical phenomena occurred on the outskirts of Hayville. A portal manifested itself in a meadow, linking Equestria with the world of bipedal creatures known as humans. Unlike many magical portals - both to the human world and other locations - this was apparently a species-specific aperture, humans were able to pass freely through it, ponies attempting to enter were met with a wall. This was the earliest known appearance of humans in Equestria, and even today, as with the existence of Hayville itself, many modern ponies regard these creatures as mythical. Although it is assumed logically that humans, as with ponies, must exist in two genders, only males were ever observed making use of this portal. The exact reason for this is unknown, and it is possible that human females did enter the portal at some point and the records of this have been lost. The prevailing theory is a combination of factors, namely, that humans, as opposed to ponies, lived in a largely patriarchal society and thus males would have easily prevented females from making use of it. The second factor is that it was largely human males who were interested in making use of the portal - for reasons which will be discussed shortly.

Early Contacts

Human males who ventured through the portal were quickly welcomed by ponies, who saw no need to fear creatures who lacked magic of any kind. The men, quickly sensing no hostility from the ponies, were equally benevolent, agreeing to submit themselves to study by Hayville scientists and doctors.

"They stand precariously on two legs seemingly in constant danger of toppling over." Wrote one physician who recorded many early observations. "They stand, on average, taller than an Alicorn. The fastest of them is capable of only about a third of pony speed, hindered no doubt by awkward bipedal locomotion. Their physical strength is far less than that of an Earth Pony, and even less than that of a Unicorn. Their lack of balance, speed, strength, and magic is perhaps somewhat made up for by their forelegs which are possessed by several cunning appendages which excel at control and manipulation of even small objects. They are largely furless excepting the top of their heads. Their fur color ranges from black to very light yellow, and as with our manes is observed to grey with age. Their skin color ranges from pale white to dark black - the exuberant hues of our coats and manes are a source of great admiration to them, perhaps owning to their own drab coloration."

With an exotic species of males entering into a largely female population with considerable sexual freedom, it should come as no surprise that the first record of a sexual encounter between a human and a mare was documented only days after the portal was first observed. The act took place on a pile of hay near the barn of a family known as Pearflower, between an unnamed human male and an Earth Pony mare named Summer Field. It was observed by a crowd of curious onlookers, the observations of one of which were recorded:

"The male, once removed of his ridiculous human garments, revealed a sexual organ of a similar shape to that of a stallion, but lacking a flared head and overall about 80% of the average size. However much to the amazement of the crowd - and presumably the mare - the act lasted not moments but over an hour. The male was not content to merely mount her in our accustomed style (though this was observed during the act) but instead took her in many different and novel positions. The mare orgasmed multiple times throughout the act, something unheard of in our copulations, save perhaps for some lesbian trysts. The mare was heard to remark of his superiority in the act to any previous partner - particularly stallion, but mare as well - and the human indicated that shape and feel of her hindquarters and the appearance and feel of her vagina were preferable to his own species."

This act was the beginning of the end for the great town of Hayville.

The Sexual Revolution

It remains unknown exactly how fast relationships between human males and mares became commonplace in Hayville. What is known is that it happened very quickly. A diarist writing in 411 A.C. wrote that "nearly every mare in Hayville who is not a foal or elderly has at least one human lover." A number of surviving journals, diaries, royal edicts, and related ephemera from the period of 410 A.C. to 450 A.C. reveal more about the presence of human males in Hayville and pony relations and attitudes towards them.

"A man's place is beneath a mare" Wrote one female unicorn. "A mare's purpose is to serve as man's plaything" Wrote another. This seeming dichotomy is reflected in the various types of relationships between men and mares. Some mares assumed a dominant role over men to which many men, by all accounts, happily submitted. As is was discovered that the shape of a human face and head was "a natural fit snugly between the hindquarters of a seated mare, as though the creator designed it so" the use of "manservants" as they were often called to provide oral sex to mares was a common practice among dominant mares. Men regarded as particularly skilled in this area, or men regarded as skilled in both penetrative and oral sex were in hot demand among the mare population. While outright sexual slavery of men was never legal in Hayville it existed in a de facto form between dominant mares and willingly submissive men. The branding of a human male with the cutie mark of his mare "owner" was recorded as early as 407 A.C. Queen Satinhoof herself was known to keep a harem of at least a dozen men at all times, the majority of whom were submissives chosen for their oral sex skills. It is recorded that from 417 A.C. until the collapse of Hayville, she never made a speech unless seated on a man's face. The smothering to death of a man beneath the hindquarters of a mare was made illegal in 420 A.C. "no matter how eager or willing the man to expire in this fashion" although in practice it likely continued to occur occasionally with willing men whose deaths were written off as accidental.

The Sexual Revolution continued

Conversely, there was also a large portion of the mare population who tended toward the submissive. These mares favored men with sexual prowess, and among a large sector of this population, men who tended toward larger than average genitalia for their species were particularly prized. A submissive mare allowing a man - or a group of men - to do as they wished with her was a common practice. Mare "switches" who alternated between dominant and submissive relationships were also common, as where situations where a mare and a man would enter into a more traditional monogamous relationship. Marriages between mares and men were recognized as valid from 415 A.C.

Because the lifespans of men were shorter than mares - particularly compared to unicorns and alicorns - it was not uncommon for even a monogamous-minded mare to have multiple human lovers throughout her life as her lovers grew old and died. Among mares who desired multiple partners, hundreds or thousands of lovers could be taken throughout her life, replaced as they either became too elderly to perform or died.

By 450 A.C. - roughly fifty years after the portal was opened - a teacher recorded that an erect human penis was the single most common new cutie mark among female fillies with many others "related in some way to the practice of human and mare relations".

The Effect on Stallions

Early stallion reactions to the man craze in Hayville apparently varied from curiosity to amusement to mild annoyance. As the number of men increased and many stallions found themselves increasingly ignored by mares, for some, this attitude changed to hostility. Reports of stallions attacking men appeared in the 410s, but vanished almost completely by the 450s. The reason is obvious: attacks on men resulted in counter attacks on stallions by mares, who significantly outnumbered them. A major event which occurred in 458 was also a likely cause of the cessation of any future stallion rebellion.

In that year a unicorn wizard named Sparkhorn lead an attack on the portal, which by that time was always under guard by a mixed group of men and mares. Sparkhorn believed his magic could close the portal forever. Several mare and human guards were killed in the attack, which was ultimately unsuccessful in closing the portal. Sparkhorn, along with 14 other stallions who participated in the attack, were hung in the town square the following day - the only mass execution to ever take place in Hayville. Three other stallions accused of participating in planning the attack were exiled.

In a story from the 480s - believed to be fictional, but likely indicative of the feelings of the stallions of Hayville by that time - a young stallion gets his cutie mark : a silver trumpet. He goes to the town common to play the instrument, but finds the music cannot be heard over the sounds of man and mare coitus emanating from open windows in the town.

By that same decade a number of stallions had taken to affecting the appearance and mannerisms of mares in attempts to themselves attract a human mate. While these stallions were ignored by the majority of the human male population, a small minority "bred the asses of these stallions as eagerly as they bred the asses and vaginas of a mare."

The Effect on the birth rate

Human males and mares were unable to create offspring through breeding, and all magical attempts to induce pregnancy through these unions failed. The problem, of course, was disastrous for the population of Hayville. This problem was recognized as early as the 430s, when Queen Satinhoof declared that "stallions are for breeding, men are for love". Throughout her life - although she bore no children herself - she attempted to encourage mares to breed at least once with a stallion in her life "and devote the rest of her time, if she wishes, with the pleasures of man.".

Unfortunately, these efforts had little to no success. "The average mare in Hayville looks at the erect penis of a stallion with disgust, while she nearly salivates over the same in a man" wrote one diarist. By 500 A.C., 2/3 of all schools in Hayville had closed due to a lack of students. The problem was even recognized by some men, who realized that a lack of breeding would result in a mareless future for them, but their attempts to encourage pony breeding were also largely unsuccessful.

In modern Equestria 91% of mares will have at least one offspring in their life, 62% will have two or more, and 17% will have three or more. Calculating estimates based on surviving data, of the mares of Hayville who were born after the introduction of humans, only 18% had one offspring, and only 3% had 2 or more.

The Last Days and the Collapse

By the 550s the population of Hayville had shrunk to around 500 mares and their several thousand human lovers, and perhaps no more than 50 stallions, half of which were living as mares. Humans entering the portal for the first time found no available mares, and simply turned around and went home. A small number of new entrants, - and occasionally humans already established in Hayville, accompanied by mares - sometimes set out for new locations. In those days Equestria was much more scarcely populated than it is now, and much less developed, and what became of these wanderers is not known.

By 550 one of the few businesses still booming in Hayville was a large sex club, descriptions of which provide a snapshot of this decaying civilization. "Mares gyrated around poles to the beat of drums as the human males threw nearly worthless bits at them. At low tables dominant mares sat on mens faces talking and drinking cocktails mixed with man ejaculate. In the rooms overhead subservient mares were manhandled and bred by groups of men, sometimes as many as a dozen, their cries of pleasure lost in the music from the bar below. Out back were several private closet sized booths, a mare in each one, men lined up outside waiting for their turn at one of the booth's holes - he simply slid his penis through the opening and an obliging mare sucked him to completion, her belly already distended from a nights work."

In either 571 or 573 (sources conflict) a tornado stuck the town. There was no attempt to stop it - the few weather pegasi left were having sex with men. The tornado killed many and destroyed 95% of the town. By 790 A.C. at the latest, the once great town was completely abandoned.

The final days of Queen Satinhoof

Queen Satinhoof did not perish in the storm. She was recorded as residing in a modest cabin some 25 km downriver from the ruins of Hayville in 646 A.C. With her were a single unicorn mare and two of her human male lovers, now elderly. Together as recorded in a scroll which was then buried in the ruins on Hayville they had devised and cast a spell which closed the Hayville portal, and had the effect so that if at any point in the future a portal was ever opened again to the human world, any human which passed through would take on the form of a pony. "It is not safe for mares to be exposed to human men." Wrote Satinhoof "Through no fault of their own, but due to my own race and kinds lusts and desires, my once great town lies in ruin. This spell will not only end the immediate problem of the Hayville portal but ensure the safety of any future portals to open anywhere in this land."

tl;dr: medieval mares died out because they didn't know how to do artificial insemination. So sad. If only there were any modern humans why could teach them.

Well read ponk. From historical Human records, sex-collapsing societies have been both postulate and scientifically verifiable with Universe 25's Beautiful Ones, so mares are certainly not solely responsible and can still be friends. Reading of ~300 equis cycles sex-spiraled into willing gendered anthropic hedonism within the frankly flanked history of our Equestrian myths and legends is just as chilling as the Mare's Moon. Appreciating the complexity of the Queen's binding wards and the cascade of justifications around them (Chesterhoof's fence) will be another legend undertaking still.

Mares certainly do not want to be Sexy Sanchez Spaghetti.
