Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

Currently trying to get the proportions and anatomy correct for Fluttershy lying on her back. These are just the outlines and I've only finished the head so far. If you get the sizes of the circles right yeah.
>>42487414
the main problem you seem to be facing is that one your heads are too small for the body. two your chest and ass is to large of a diameter compared to the head. you naturally get the bean shape by making the chest the smallest circle the rest falls in place naturally from there, the circles off to the side are a visualization to help depict what im saying. the red circle is the same size as her head, the green one her ass, the blue one her chest. the snoots are a bit boxy which kinda makes her look like a stallion, try to aim for a more round profile on the lower jaw leading up into the tip of her nose. I'd also say aim for larger eyes but thats up to you and what you are aiming for stylistically.

>>
>>42490312
Except for the direction visualization tip from >>42491243 , I'd say you could try out doing way darker shadows, if the look you are going for allows it. That would help the shading show up and have a bigger impact than they do now. You can also experiment with having a color tint to the shadows to give the image a particular color tone and also avoid having straight grey shadows just desaturate and muddy the colors they shade.

I kinda want to ask YOU how you made such a high-res gif, with gradient shadows of all things, and still stayed beneath 4MB? Very impressive. Is this the power of dithering? I avoid dithering because I'm scared of the color-mosaic-pixel thing, but that high resolution reduces that effect a whole lot! I guess the relatively few frames also helps with the size.
I always fall back on using extremely sharp shadows to reduce file size and to keep the limited colors from freaking out when I do Gifs. That locks one into always doing a cel-shaded style, but I've found that keeping gradient shadows consistent and keeping them from jittering during small movements is really hard anyway.

The very subtle lines beneath the transparent underwear are great!

gonna preface with sorry for the book and if I come off as harsh and or way too autistic. most of the stuff is relatively minor mistakes. starting off with the snoot assuming you are drawing one of the princesses the snoot is too large and reads a bit more like a stallions, you need a gentle s curve on the bottom of the jaw so it doesn't read like a stallion to the viewer. the position of the eyes relative to the top of the snoot was good and properly placed for the large snoot so i took it and moved it down to match the new profile then added a little extra size to it to further refine it. the main problem with the wing is its position. it's basically coming out of the ponies neck and needs to be placed further back behind the shoulder. the yellow lines are suggestions more or less you could entirely leave them as is if you choose it just looks a little better, the hoof position for the fore leg with it pointing straight down is good for an animated trot cycle but looks a little awkward in a still image in my opinion. the legs are a bit noodley in the back and for where the knee is positioned makes them look a bit awkward so my suggestion would to be either to follow the red line or rotate the knee back and reshape the butt line to match the leg position. usually if say you look at a show screen shot of a Pegasus the butt line makes a gentle s curve when connected with the front of the leg and they also tend to tuck their legs in slightly when flying, uguu related https://d.uguu.se/RekkPlxN.png.

Ok. Your drawing has an issue with the hooves feeling like they're kind of floating. Using a plane guide you can better align them to feel more 'solid' like they're touching something. Granted using this kind of thing for more complex poses will get much harder, but the concept can still work.

I'm not going to give you an autistic wall like the lunaflag, but he's right on the wing position .

You kind of drew a hard tube then stuck on attachments, so it's stiff and disconnected at the pelvis. I used Riley's method he did on stream with a line of action and drawing over circle fills and cross-contours to get a feel for the forms.

The face for alicorns is just a series of curves in it's simple side profile. But when everything follows the same line it looks stiff, your head is the same direction as the body. Don't forget to play with head tilts,

Unclear what kind of expression you wanted because the eyebrows can easily change the shape of the eye.

Front hooves are pretty much fine, but the wings and back legs need another go. Like the head, changing up the lines helps a lot.

For wings, try practicing drawing folds of paper and fans. Wings are like arms and have joints in them just like yours do.

What inker are you using for your eyelashes?
>>
>>42496777
first of all checked blessed digits, second what do you mean by inker? do you mean brush? I'm predominantly a vector nigger and I usually just use the basic round brush setting at full density/opacity with paint tool sai's vector tools. I also usually modify the density/opacity of the tips down to zero and the middle of the lash down to roughly 40%. I do the lashes on a separate layer under the main linework then put a pin light layer over it to get that translucent look through the mane.

Decide what kind of pose you're going for, is it from the side? from the back? then go from there. If there's twists involved use centerlines and start doing basic twist mental exercises like paper/ ribbon, potato sacks and, bent boxes, cylinders.

You'll have to use your brain and think if it's twisted where does the center line end up? And when you have that info then you will be able to place the other stuff easier

Her left hoof's anatomy is wrong, the torso and neck anatomy in general is also an issue, do some exercises and study the shapes/muscles ponies have.
>>
>>42495596
Proportion, perspective, anatomy, and line confidence exercises are my best advice to you.
My favorite proportion exercise is block-in: take a pony and reduce it to straight lines and big shapes, that forces you to see ponies the way they are rather than what you think they look like. Another good exercise is copying from a drawing/show frame you like and rotating it 180 degrees, flipping the image upside down, which forces your brain to see lines as they are rather than what you think they should look like.
For perspective, draw boxes, boxes everywhere, rotate them, stack them, skew them. Another good one is setting up 1, 2, or 3 point perspective grids and figure drawing until you get a sense of space.
For anatomy, gesture drawing is very good. These aren't pretty sketches, they're messy, flowing lines that capture weight and rhythm. Comparative anatomy like this (>>42497247) also does wonders; you can get a sense of how legs move for any pose.
Line confidence can be either the easiest or hardest part to master. Ghosting lines works very well for this: hover your pen over the intended line and then commit to it in one go. If you want good lines, use very little pen stabilization, or better yet, none at all.
>>
>>42497019
Don't see a lot of horseshoes on ponies. Cute.
>>
>>42496805
You're right. I know I should be doing a drapery study of some sort. When I started drawing again (about a year ago), I discovered a severe bias in my perspective analysis and shifted to practicing scenery and landscape art to correct it. I've been avoiding figures because I know how amateur my skills are, but I've started adding ponies back into my art.
Your edit helped me see what I was going for. If you have any other recommendations or any info on mapping skeletons I would be very appreciative.
Thank you, Anon.
>>
>>42496794
I'm unfamiliar with vector work.
Are you saying that you use vectors to shape the lashes like that? I love this style and have been experimenting with brushes for months now and can't figure it out.
>>
>>42498970
The line work including the lashes is vector work essentially. The way it works in sai is a bit different than other programs but is actually quite intuitive, where ever you click on the canvas it drops a point called a control point that allows you to make line, but it also allows you to control the shape and contour of the line based on the number of the points and where you put the point. Best way I can describe it is like bending a willow branch, you can control the bend based on where you hold the branch and how you bend it if that makes sense. Id say just use a basic round brush and practice the use of pressure, and by that I mean as you are making your stroke lift off the tablet. practice making tear drop shapes cause that's essentially the shape I use for my lashes. For the density/opacity look into the settings of your program to see if you can set the density/opacity of the line to decrease with the pressure and then just fuck around with those settings till you find one you like the most.

>>
>>42499854
Anon... Clip definitely has vector line layers but the gif was showing you you can make it in any program with just outlining your lashes and fillbucketing. No vectors needed. Japs do this kind of lashes since they work in super thin lines all the time and going over a thin line with another to add the extra shape and thickness is an ancientfag technique

So I've been considering lately if I should make some social media accounts for my art, but I don't know if that's a good idea or a terrible one. What are y'all's experiences with that? What about a Patreon, considering that multiple anons have asked me before if they can donate? I don't want to be a whore about it, just have a way to get more exposure and say yes if anyone asks again lol.
>>
>>42511170
having a twitter and a kofi are what i would consider a good foundation for being a drawfag with presence. a pone social account as well for bonus points with /mlp/fags specifically. twitterfags routinely say the site is bad and all that, but the reality is that it does just about everything an artist needs to grow and advertise. kofi is a bit easier for smaller people to get donations/commissions/etc and id probably put off on patreon unless your fame exceeds expectations which is rare for most people
>>
>>42511208
Interesting, I had never heard of ko-fi until now. What makes it better than Patreon? I would assume the more well known site would be more appealing to donors regardless of an artist's size since more people have accounts already made and such. Pone.social sounds like a great idea I hadn't thought of. I'd love to network a bit and make anon friends ahead of time since I might try to go to the next mare fair and it would be cool to not be alone.
>>
>>42511322
sites like patreon have a sort of obligation for the owner to upload things each month or whatever, which if you can manage is fine, but if your still a bit of a newbie and just want to do your own thing primarily then kofi would be the way to go. i have a subscribe star that i use to post project files for my animations, but that obligation to post them can be annoying especially when nobody cares to pay and see them
>>
>>42511208
>a pone social account
there's a social media for pone?
>>
>>42511357
yes, pone.social is used by primarily anons
>>
>>42511360
Never heard about it and I've been here for years, so it's a mastodon bubble. I know pedos use mastodon but not for pony
>>
>>42511374
pedos stick to baraag, mastadon is a hive of bubbles of all kinds. equestria.social is the reddit version of pone.social
>>
>>42511376
Why use mastodon over X, if the goal is exposure X has more numbers
>>
>>42511392
i use both, pone for all my pony stuff where x has pony + other stuff on occasion. that way people who want just my ponies can get just my ponies
>>
>>42511397
Couldn't you just make an account only for pony on X?
>>
>>42511409
sure could
>>
>>42511413
Then what's the point of a mastodon account.
>>
>>42511420
because i use it for ponies only, and to cater to anons who dont like twitter

I cleaned up an old sketch of my poor boy Lilac, form the Days of Wasp and Spider fic.
For some reason I keep going for the "just in between 3/4 and front face" as well as "tilted up, showing the underside of the jaw" head angles; both of which the show usually stays away from. And since I never learn to understand or draw head spheres and nose boxes, and instead just keep guessing stuff, I ended up wrestling with his face for way longer than I should.

How did you all learn to draw? I feel lost with this. I feel like I don’t get any better just copying drawings I like, I don’t learn how to structure stuff for myself. How did you actually structure your learning process and get better, speaking from when you first began? I have the time and the energy but I have no direction. If anyone has a tutorial playlist or anything like that they used for lessons, help me out.
>>
>>42521863
having fun is an underrated foundation of drawing. you draw things you enjoy while simultaneously challenging yourself. using the fundies like construction to construct new poses, backgrounds and scenes. push your understanding of anatomy and perspective. try illustrating a scene from your favorite green, making little comics to get an idea of scale and understanding of what you know and need to work on. there is no one size fits all guide to drawing, it ultimately comes down to you. finding your comfort zone, and finding your way out of it.

oh hell yeah brother the firebird is a solid classic, a friend of mine had one when we were growing up and it was always nice to ride in when he took it out. it was even better when he took the t tops off cause the breeze and visibility is phenomenal. based as fuck for saving it from the scrap yard its always a good thing when people save classics. my tastes tend to fall around the mid to late 40s through the 50s until about '59. not many 60s cars I like but I like the mid to late 70s-80s generally.

Dude, totally fucking do it! It's definetly different from digital, but I feel it's more rewarding!
Some tips that I'll give:
- Only buy paint (YOU) WILL USE for your drawing. I used only like 5 colors (two blues, one light purple, and black + white) for my drawing. Seriously, it's not worth buying colors you won't need just because they came in a pack.

- Sketch first on paper before starting. Probably a not too obvious, but the thing is, you will have to copy your sketch to the canvas! Try to use grids as a way to help you sketch, as they will also help you when you need to sketch on the canvas.

- This kinda ties with the top tip, DO NOT try to do your sketching on the canvas first. Graphite on canvas is REALLY messy, and will smudge all over the place, hence why I recommend to sketch on paper first. BUT when you are ready to sketch on the canvas, I suggest to use color pencils to do it. They won't smudge as easily, and they are easy enough to erase (with an eraser) in case you messed up.

Looking fordward to seeing your future paintings!

I have another project car and decided to ponyfy it too, this one is a big, rusty land yacht great money draining mares, I keep telling me I can fix them
I always struggle coloring these, I don't know how to explain it but it is like:
>color on the background of the line art, wherever you put color the line art on the top stands out more
>the places where the color doesn't align exactly with the line on the top layer look washed out and really transparent
>After coloring it looks like some lines are there and some lines get slightly erased
>Can correct them if I extend the color a bit more to cover more area under the line and make it stand out more, but it always takes too much time.
I use Photoshop, I color everything with a big ass brush and do a mess and then use the wand tool to erase all the parts outside the lines. For some reason the bucket tool fucking sucks and always leaves those little artifacts/pixels around the edges of the line, maybe I'm using a shitty line art brush, I don't use the default hard round one.

Can't fucking draw snoots for the life of me. It's either pointy and/or too wide.

Yes, this is a cry for help.
>>
>>42532258
You should post an example of your bad snouts. Don't forget that you can use part of the most hidden eye to form a snout, also try to make the line of the bridge of the snout small enough to distance from the face but not long enough so the snout looks too big, try to form the smile of the pony first and then add the chin under the smile, big chins make them look like stallions so watch out for that.
Also, I feel you anon, nothing is more difficult to me than making snouts, and different snouts in different perspectives. Rear legs are also a bitch, it can make a pose look so stupid

Just Krita with some default pixel brushes! As for the canvas it's about double the size as it originally was because i nearest neighbored it to be bigger. Surprisingly you can double the size of a pixel drawing in Krita without too much fuss so long as you make sure its exactly double. Although sometimes if you do it after using dithering it can look a bit odd, but its not too big of an issue.
Just an old pic of more pixel-brush using Krita art, nothing new.

Hope soon I con do better poses and make out of my mind without so much of a reference. Thanks for the help anyway! It’s a sprite of a coin, she’s a programmer in a world of rudimentary archaic (no pun indented) game design. Meaning despite the fact she is very skilled, she is in a world that really does not need it. It’s kind of a joke on how many OC’s are video game themed when video games are barley a thing in Equestria.
>>
>>42560879
Draw everyday, do some practice on parts you find lacking, always try and learn something and draw with purpose. I usually have some sort of sketchbook with me but I rarely like to draw when I'm out and about. As for tablets I can only say that a non-display tablet works well since that is the only thing I've used.

You gotta find a way that will make you take in information and apply that effectivly

I don't post here, but I've been doing a pony per day for quite a while now and today's painting was kinda neat. 9/11 would use overpriced acrylic paint pens again.

I've been thinking about getting some paint pens, do you like the brand you got?

Poscas are really really nice and unfortunately like four bucks a pen. I love them but they are spendy. Very comfy to use, though.

nta but I thing the juxtaposition of being a 28 year old boomer and just beginning to learn to draw ponies that look like a middle schoolers creation is really funny (I can say that because I'm drifting in the exact same boat)

Almost a 2 a day, daily doodling in noz, but the grind is hard to keep up. Ideas scatterbrained, skills inconsistent as fuck. Brain tired, not sure if I can do another month, but habit-drawing is supposed to be a super-power.

I can do floating heads and no-pose posing but I want to learn how to do real poses that dont suck generic dick.

More coffee shop nonsense. A goal I have post mare fair is to start drawing pones doing things instead of random poses. I should probably start pushing in that direction.
