Well, this chapter won't have any of that stuff. As I said, I got stuck in the offshoot thing and it caused my writing to stall for over a month. So I decided to write the next "regular" chapter which I did in a quarter of the time. I hope to be done with the proofreading tomorrow.

Thanks. And yes, it irks me to leave something when it is incomplete. I definitely plan to finish the chapter eventually. For now though, I had to prioritise the story as a whole because this process dragged on for far too long. Hell, nearly six weeks without an update is the record, if I'm not mistaken. And it isn't one I'm proud of.

With that said, here's chapter 178, the next "proper" chapter of the story. I'll have to think about something so that it doesn't take another month to get the next text out. Anyway, links as usual and here we go.

>You come to a stop right in front of a certain lone building, just a short distance away from Summer Shine.
"So, this is the place."
>You eye the porch and the wall and try to assess the state of the house from up close.
>Some of its wooden constructions are in different, albeit visible states of disrepair.
>But the main structures of the house appear to be, as far as you can tell, fine and stable.
>Of course, the scans you have conducted on the ship have told you most of that already, but it is nevertheless somewhat different to see the place personally.
"This isn't looking too bad."
>#deca.mare stops right next to you.
>"Hmhm. With a little bit of repair work, the house will be habitable in no time."
>She pauses.
>"The furniture will be the trickiest part. We have to acquire new pieces because the interior was cleared out a long time ago."
>Sky Squall and Firefly land nearby.
>And the golden stallion responds to #deca.mare's point.
>"Sounds like a job for our new neighbours. They'll help us to arrange something... in time."
>The last part of that remark was chosen for a reason, and you caught his implications right away.
"You think we're pressed for time, Sky?"
>The stallion merely smiles.
>"We are, aren't we?"
>You say nothing and blink.
>Same as #deca.mare.
>Then he laughs.
>It is a hearty laughter, but not a mocking one.
>"Clouds and winds, I knew it. If... it isn't too bold to ask, how long?"
>You clear your throat and answer his question honestly.
>For there is no point in trying to play dumb.
>They will find it out sooner or later anyway.
"It isn't too bold. We still have more than ten."
>Sky Squall and Firefly look at each other and perform the Pegasus equivalent of a handshake with their wings.
>They are not hiding the fact that they have talked about this previously.
>Well, you cannot really blame them for that.
>After all, it is a big deal for everyone.
>Sky Squall and Firefly included, as you are going to live in the same house.
>Plus, you can understand that they are at least a little bit curious.
>You would be too if you were in their situation.
>The two Pegasi turn back to #deca.mare and you.
>Firefly speaks up.
>"That's great news. Congratulations!"
>The magenta mare raises a forehoof, prompting #deca.mare and you to bump it in turn.
"Thanks. It feels good to know that the first step is taken. Right, #deca?"
>#deca.mare nods.
>"Right. And a big step at that. It is... exciting to be sure."
>The two of you share a kiss before you go on.
"But it comes with a schedule. We have slightly less than a year to turn this shack into an abode."
>You clear your throat again.
"Just for the record..."
>And personal curiosity.
"... we do have ten months, right?"
>>
>>42511019
>Sky Squall needs a second to realise that you just turned the tables.
>And for a brief moment, you actually think that he might say no.
>Eventually, however, he puts your mind at ease with a grin.
>"Yes. Provided that your calculations are right."
>You have to suppress a wry smile of your own.
"Believe me, they are."
>He takes another step forward.
>"Then we have our work cut out for us."
>Again, his tone is completely factually.
>There are no hidden quips or anything else of that sort.
>"When do we start?"
>#deca.mare speaks up next.
>"In a day or two. I think we should socialise with the ponies of Summer Shine a little bit more before we get to work."
>You nod.
"Yeah. We'll be the talk of the town for a while anyway. I can't think of a better moment than that to chat with everyone."
>Sky Squall and Firefly agree as well.
>The magenta Pegasus is the next to raise her voice.
>"Fine. But before we return to the village, I'd like to see the interior. The scans didn't show any pictures of the rooms themselves."
>Well, the system created a three dimensional model of the house based on the scans, but you understand Firefly's way of thinking.
>A model may be fine and accurate, but it does not supersede the real picture.
>#deca.mare responds.
>"Of course. Come."
>She walks to the front door, and Firefly follows her closely.
>Sky Squall and you exchange glances and swiftly follow the two mares.
>And a question crosses your mind as you walk.
"By the way, Sky, how did you know?"
>The stallion looks at you.
>"Hm?"
>You inhale.
>"You know what I mean. What gave it away?"
>Sky Squall replies as he trots into the house.
>"Nothing solid in particular. But I spotted a few cues here and there. That gave me an idea."
>You tilt your head.
"Oh? Which cues?"
>He snickers.
>"That's... hard to put into words. But when you know, you know."
>Not exactly a precise description, yet fair enough.
>After all, this is not the first time that Sky Squall's perception has been sharp enough to notice things which others would have missed.
>You follow the golden Pegasus into the house.
>The four of you now stand in a smaller corridor which also doubles as an entry hall.
>The door to the living room is on the left side, the doors to the kitchen and a moderately sized storage chamber are to the right.
>Said chamber also contains the hatch to the small basement.
>And since it is the room which potential visitors will probably frequent the least, you can hardly think of a better place for your little outpost.
>At the end of the corridor, you spot the stairs which lead to the upper level with five more or less equally sized rooms.
>The four of you have agreed to use two of those as bedrooms for yourselves, and two more are meant to be reserved for the foals.
>The last one is still unassigned, and will remain as such until you know for sure what you want to do with it.
>>
>>42511022
>Perhaps it becomes a hobby room, perhaps it will have to be turned into another room for future foals, if one couple becomes a tad too ambitious, or it may be something completely different.
>You do not know for sure yet.
>And whilst you cannot speak for anyone else, it does add a little bit to the excitement, as far as you are concerned.
>But all of this is still just a vision of the future.
>Your effort to get there has to come first.
>The empty and dusty hall is a clear indicator for that too.
>Nevertheless, the house is a good choice.
>A rough gem, really.
>You walk through the corridor and towards the stairs.
"Take a look around, Firefly. That's why we are here."
>The magenta Pegasus nods.
>"On it. Sky?"
>Sky Squall turns to his wife.
>"Coming!"
>The couple disappears into the living room.
>And you inspect the staircase next.
"The wood is looking okay here too. Does it support my weight?"
>#deca.mare chuckles.
>"Certainly, Anon. You will see, this house may be old, but it is in a good condition."
>You blink.
"For the most part, maybe. The roofing wants to have a word with you though."
>She inhales.
>"Fair. But you will see, it is the exception. And merely caused by neglect, not by a lack of quality."
>Well, you are about to find out how high the quality of the stairs really is.
>You take the first step and check how the wood reacts.
>And it supports your weight with barely any sound.
>Only a very faint creaking emanates from the wooden surface.
>Nothing out of the ordinary for material which has been used for decades.
>You carefully take the next step.
>With a similar result.
>Then the next and the next, until you have reached the upper level.
>You raise your voice as #deca.mare follows you.
"Hm, you're right. The structure is pretty stable for its age. We shouldn't have many problems with those."
>You take a look around to check the second level.
>And much like the entrance area, this place is effectively empty.
>No furniture, no decorations.
>But, apart from the glaring hole in the roof, no signs of damage or decay either.
>You turn to #deca.mare as she stops at your side.
"Yeah, that will do. It requires some cleaning work though."
>She nods with a smile.
>You go on.
"Speaking of work..."
>You step closer to the hole to inspect the damage.
>The opening itself is not overly large and fairly unremarkable.
>You spot common signs of wear and tear which accumulated over time and eventually caused the structure to fail.
>And the respective debris of thatch and wood are scattered on the ground around the hole as well.
>Exactly what one would expect.
>However, something else catches your attention, as the buckling structure led to notable secondary effects.
>Especially on the floor beneath the opening.
"Hm, that wasn't mentioned in the scanner report. What's that?"
>>
>>42511025
>You get a little bit closer to inspect the wooden floor up close.
>The planks show notable signs of discolouration.
>You can partially attribute these stains to the rain that must have fallen through the open roof.
>But these are not merely water stains.
>Some of these are tiny colonies of moss.
>Moss which indicates lingering humidity, even in its still small mass.
>And humidity bears the risk of fungal decay.
"Well, damn. That's not so good."
>#deca.mare inspects the spots as well to assess the situation.
>"Agreed. I do not see any signs of mould yet. This is why the scanners have not listed it as damage. But we should still replace these planks as soon as possible."
>You turn your head upwards and look at the sky.
"By the way, what's the weather schedule for this area?"
>#deca.mare responds at once, and she knows what you are thinking of.
>"There will be no rain in the next four days."
>You process that information for a second.
"Okay. So it's not critically urgent, but we should cover the hole somehow before more water gets in."
>She nods.
>"Good idea."
>One more point for your to-do list.
>Well, the ponies of Summer Shine can certainly help you with this too.
>You will probably ask for several favours like these in the next weeks.
>Of course, you could acquire everything you need quickly and covertly with the help of your machines.
>But that would be an unwise move for several reasons.
>After all, the ponies would wonder how and where you got everything so quickly.
>And it would also waste a lot of opportunities to mingle with your new neighbours.
>Not to mention that you will return said favours eventually with your weather support.
>So you mentally add this topic to your list of things that you plan to mention during your later trip to the village as you move on to the next room.
>One of the five chambers that is likely to become a bedroom.
>Really, you merely have to pick which one will become the temporary spare room.
>And to do so properly, you think that you should see them first.
>Even when their display might be unremarkable and very basic in their current condition.
>Which they are.
>The first chamber is a completely empty room.
>Intact, albeit empty.
>So you move on to the next.
>Room number two still has, to your surprise, a small wooden side table.
>But apart from a colony of cobwebs and a respectable layer of dust, you spot nothing of note.
>The other three rooms greet you with variations of the same picture.
>Empty or mostly empty, they all require a general overhaul in regard to their interior, but are sound and stable from a structural perspective.
>Indeed, the roofing is the only dilapidated segment of the house.
>You return to the staircase as you hear the sound of stepping hooves in the corridor on the ground level.
>Sky Squall and Firefly must be done with their inspection of the living room and the kitchen.
>>
>>42511029
>And sure enough, you see how the two Pegasi return to the corridor as you look down the stairs.
"Found anything?"
>Firefly responds.
>"Enough dust to form a cloud, you?"
>You shrug.
"Same, plus cobwebs."
>Sky Squall takes over.
>"What about the hole?"
"Pretty much what we expected. But we also have to restore parts of the floor."
>He nods.
>"I see. How much?"
>#deca.mare answers that question.
>"A couple of planks at the very least, but I suggest to replace a few more, just to be sure."
>The stallion inhales.
>"So floor planks too."
>You chime in.
"And something to cover the hole until we can fill it."
>The golden Pegasus agrees.
>"Right, got it."
>Then he laughs.
>"You know, that will cost us a lot of weather flights to even out the favours."
>You smile.
"That's fine. As Firefly said, our experience is our greatest tool. We'll impress the village in record speed."
>A pause.
"Think of it as a new challenge, Sky. We'll see how fast our work can win the hearts of our new friends."
>Platonically speaking, of course.
>And Sky Squall nods approvingly.
>"Hm, not bad. But..."
>The stallion points at you and strikes a challenging pose.
>"... you have to give one hundred percent too. If we turn this into a display of skill, only the best performance will do."
>Of course.
>No matter how many lives he leads, and where he lives, Sky Squall will always strive to become an exemplar in one way or another.
>You respond with a salute and a friendly smirk.
"Sure thing, boss. But remember, no old squad stories in public. At least not in first person."
>Sky Squall sighs.
>"Yes, yes. We've never been part of the guard."
>He pauses.
>"If someone asks why we're so good, we'll just say we've helped out the ponies in the northern fringes for a long time."
>You think about that for a while.
"Okay, sure. The weather conditions over there can be challenging at times. Sounds plausible enough."
>Sky Squall laughs.
>"And it's not wrong. We've been there."
>You nod slowly.
"Yeah, dodging crystal turret blasts and hoof blows."
>The stallion shrugs.
>"Nopony needs to know about that part. Or that only two of us were actually present for the action."
>You shrug.
"Fair enough."
>You look at the two mares in turn.
"What do you think?"
>Firefly replies first.
>"Works for me."
>Then #deca.mare.
>"For me too. And if anypony asks, I provided support in the background."
>Which is equally close to the truth.
>You take a deep breath.
"Right, I think this covers everything. Or is there anything else left to take care of here?"
>#deca.mare shakes her head.
>"No, I do not think so."
>Sky Squall and Firefly do not interject either.
"So, back to the village then?"
>Three nods of approval.
>Which means it is settled.
>>
>>42511032
>#deca.mare and you return to the ground level.
>Then the four of you leave the house.
>Since you are the last one to step out, you close the doors behind you.
>After that, you examine the front wall of the building for a few seconds again before you turn around and join the others.
>As you follow the curved path that leads to Summer Shine, Firefly speaks up.
>"Say, have you already thought about names?"
>Well, it does not take a genius to guess what type of names the magenta mare is thinking of.
>#deca.mare and you exchange glances.
"Now that you mention it, no. We haven't talked about that yet."
>You pause.
"Besides, it's still very early."
>Firefly grins.
>"Perhaps. But you have some advantages that others don't have."
>You tilt your head, but keep moving.
"What do you mean?"
>The Pegasus mare laughs calmly.
>"Come on. What is it going to be?"
>You blink and let your mental gears grind for a moment.
>Then it clicks.
"The foal?"
>A nod.
>"Is it a colt or a filly?"
>You hesitate.
"Uhm, I have no idea."
>This response surprises Firefly visibly.
>"You haven't checked?"
>You shake your head.
"To be honest, no. I haven't thought much about that detail. The last days were pretty busy too."
>Firefly remains somewhat baffled, but she can follow your reasoning.
>"That's true. I figured this was the first thing you'd want to know though."
>She turns to #deca.mare.
>"But you know already, don't you?"
>#deca.mare sighs with a smile.
>"It is hard to miss in my position."
>So yes.
>And as she implies, this was to be expected.
>#deca.mare goes on.
>"But if I were you, I would not ask, at least not right now."
>Firefly and you look at each other as both of you wonder what #deca.mare is trying to say.
>"We still have a lot of time for that discussion. Cherish the surprise for a while."
>She turns to Firefly in particular.
>"I know you are tempted to use the tools you did not have in the past, Firefly. But if you really ask yourself and think about it, if your younger self had the same access to information as you do now, would said younger version of you wish to have everything laid out right from the start?"
>Firefly stops and raises a forehoof as she tries to come up with an argument.
>But in the end, she forfeits the point.
>"No. I don't think so."
>And in the end, she sides with #deca.mare.
>Firefly looks you directly in the eyes.
>"Forget what I said, Anon. I take it back."
>A part of you is surprised to see Firefly relenting this easily, as she does not even attempt to defend her former point.
>Then again, #deca.mare appealed to her extensive experience in a sphere that you have just barely entered.
>If there is a field in which #deca.mare can coax an unexpected reaction out of Firefly, it is something like this.
>And you can understand where it is coming from.
>This is a deeply personal matter, after all.
>>
>>42511034
>You nod, and the four of you resume your trip back to Summer Shine.
>And as you walk, you feel the urge to think of the path in front of you.
>For the general direction in which you are heading, both figuratively and literally, is fairly clear.
>But you do not know every little nook and cranny by heart yet.
>There are still some unknown factors in the equation.
>All things considered, you see it as a good thing.
>And even though #deca.mare is already one step ahead of you due to her position and responsibilities, you know for a fact that both of you are looking forward to your next steps on the path together.

Well, I figured that calling the foal Harmony, or having Harmony as a part of the name for that matter, would sound a touch too pompous in my opinion. It's going a bit far, even when ponies have of course no idea what is really behind the name/within the foal.

Since they are not limited to the tools of the current Equestrian age, they can sterilize the house with some advanced tech. Also pretty evil from #deca.mare and Anon to release mold/wood eating fungi. We have coal because 360-300 million years ago there were nothing to decompose lignin.

>Already managed to get Firefly pregnant?!
>Sky knocking up Firefly for the fifth time.
>Anon knocking up #deca.mare when?
No, it's the other way round. Sky is asking Anon whether they have a time limit or not because he is suspecting that they have done it, which Anon and #deca.mare confirm more or less on the spot. Anon later simply turns the tables by implying that Sky Squall and Firefly could have been faster, asking Sky Squall indirectly in turn. But he says that they haven't done that so far, which means that the ten months plus some days are their actual deadline.
>Maybe the god mode access levels making it possible to examine any and every function of the proxies?
Well, Sky Squall could have done that easily. But it's more polite to ask, and it is a general gentleman's agreement between the four not to pry in the private matters of the other couple.
>Sounds like all the wood has to be replaced, does not matter how good it looks.
From what I understand as a layman, heavy emphasis on the layman, it depends on a few factors. If, for example, a room has been affected by fungal decay already, then yes. Everything has to go and the room/house has to be restored from scratch to make sure that no lingering spores and colonies remain, including all of the pieces which are seemingly unaffected and looking fine. However, if it hasn't reached that stage yet, then some parts may be still salvageable in theory.
>Also pretty evil from #deca.mare and Anon to release mold/wood eating fungi.
>Spoiler
Well, considering that this Equestria does not possess any form of fossil resources since the planet is a, in terms of evolutionary time, "recently" terraformed world, the ponies and the other species of that planet couldn't possibly rely on those in any case. And it's fortunately not much of a problem thanks to the advanced technology that is helping to provide the materials which everyone requires to flourish. And waiting three hundred million years for them to form is not really a viable option under any realistic circumstances.
>I can't imagine how only a few got wet.
It's possible to seal wood and similar surfaces to make them more resistant to water effects, even when it pools. That can do it's part to prevent damage caused by water, at least for a limited time.
>Isn't it obvious? The foal will be called Harmony.

Well, me trying (and horribly failing) to do that is a part of the reason why it took more than a month to push out another update. And it's not off the table either. That's what the postponed entry in the paste is reserved for, by the way.
>>
>>42517361
>It's possible to seal wood
Yes, but not with the technology they have. Also it's a hundred year old house with a hole in it for who knows how long. Ten years? If I recall it's not occupied for 40 years already. And by "only a few got wet" I meant that where did the water go? If a rainfall is pouring in the house, everything will get wet, no matter how far it is from the hole. If you fill the pool from a hose, eventually there will be water everywhere in the pool. The inside (flooring) of a house is not usually designed to lead water away.
>coal
It does not need that long under the right conditions, but definitely more than how long they are working on Equestria.
>name
Ah ok. The foal will definitely needs a different name from the "computer" Harmony, just so they are able to distinguish the two.
>blind/informed about everything

>Yes, but not with the technology they have.
Well, their technological state is somewhat irregular, considering that almost everything in their lives, including magic spells and enchantments, are technology in one way or another. As such it's not impossible for them to have at least limited ways of solving problems like these. But this is admittedly just a narrative hand wave on my end since that's a point that the story doesn't cover.
>a hole in it for who knows how long. Ten years?
I didn't want to specify this point in time too much, precisely not to entangle myself too deeply in the details of the state of the house. Though I figured that the overall condition of the rooms at least implies that the hole is a relatively recent "addition" to the architecture.
>I meant that where did the water go?
It evaporates over time. Any smaller pool of water will eventually dissipate if it is left to its own devices, and especially so during drier phases. If anything, I figure that snowfall may cause more damage due to its lingering presence during the colder winters.
>If you fill the pool from a hose, eventually there will be water everywhere in the pool.
Yes, but the comparison doesn't work completely since it implies a regular flow of water into the structure. But rainfall isn't a constant event like the stream from a water hose. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it doesn't. And as #deca.mare has implied, there are phases in which they have no rainfall at all for days. That's enough time for the accumulated water to disappear.
Plus, the weather is largely controlled and regulated by Pegasi too. They can help to ensure that the rain in the area around the house is lighter to reduce the amount of water which lands on the house. Technically speaking, they can even canonically spare pinpoint precise spots in the show like pic related, but going that far would certainly be too much in this setting.
>It does not need that long under the right conditions,
After doing a very quick internet research into the topic, the creation of the necessary peat alone is estimated to take at least ten thousand years under ideal natural circumstances, and several million on top of that to create the proper coal. I don't think that #deca.mare would be willing to wait for such a long time, even if we were to assume that she can somehow help to accelerate the process with her own machines, and complete the coal creation procedure in the span of millennia instead of millions of years.
>She can know the information and act according to it but still blind to it in her conscious mind. Just like for example people with split brain (its a treatment for schizophrenia).
Fair. It begs the question if that effort is worth it though.
>Go to fimfic/ponebin/ponepaste, look for some clopfics, read them to get inspiration.
I did and I tried. And it's definitely a genre that I struggle with in general. Reading and writing alike.
>>
>>42521245
>coal
You just made me look up. So lab made synthetic coal can be made in a few days/weeks in small quantities. #deca.mare could just encapsulate a few tons of wood at a time in a wolfram shell + high pressure water and park it near a star as a heat source, leave it for a few hundred years and done.
>Reading smut
Is that really a struggle? Just find the one which tickle your fancy. There is no shortage of smut luckily. You could also ask another writefag to do the chapter for you.
>water + floorboards
From my personal experience, even getting wet one time can cause issues and mold to grow.
>evaporates
Obviously, but that does not happen in an instant. It takes days if not weeks.
But at this point this is a miniscule detail kinda. If you don't plan to do a few chapters of how they find wood, cutting it down/transporting it, milling lumber, letting it dry (that takes a year if you air dry it), planing it/milling it again, etc. Because if you don't, you could write either "replace a little" or "replace a lot" without affecting the story much.
