>>42539116I don't see Glimmer as traditional whatsoever; her introduction is all about eschewing cutie marks for a better way of life. Her episodes show her willing to try new things, even if her methods are often wrong. She's as much an educated seeker of knowledge as Twilight is, only self-schooled. Her sense of community is mostly self-serving and derived from charismatic leadership. She has to learn how to value tradition and others for who they are, not what she wants them to be. I guess you could say AJ is good for her because she's an egg that's actively learning, but I'd still call glimmerjack an opposites attract ship. I tease that you're my enemy because Glimmer is a twisted mirror of Twilight, two sides of the same coin, except Glimjack has even less screen time than rare Twijack. I see untapped potential in Twilight and Applejack clashing, but I wouldn't reduce them to college educated and redneck. I just think they're neat.

>>42557319Our Town was fundamentally flawed but its underlying structure emphasizes a strong sense of community where everyone knows each other, hold similar beliefs, and contributes to the town. Are those not traditional values? Everyone pulled their own weight to create a self-sufficient village in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't totally self-serving for Starlight because her villagers were also reaping the same benefits. Regardless, that's where I find their views align. Twi blue pilled Glim a bit but that just gives her a greater appreciation for all cultures and she went through an entire musical pretty much about valuing tradition so she learned that lesson already.Starlight being more open to trying new things along with her creative instinct is one of the fun parts of their dynamic though. She'd think up new recipes for apple foods and figure out improvements that could be made to the farm. Some tension against AJ's stubbornness is healthy and can work both ways. Glim can help AJ appreciate new things and AJ can help Glim find more to appreciate in the mundane.
>>42563423It's not traditional if that way of life was never a tradition. I can see where you're drawing similarities, but comparing a cultish commune to Ponyville is plain wrong.>She'd think up new recipes for apple foods and figure out improvements that could be made to the farm.Applejack's Day Off was hot garbage and I won't stand for any random ponies out-appleing the apple pony.
>>42564038I'm not comparing Our Town to Ponyville, I'm comparing AJ and Glimmy's compatible belief systems (so it's more accurate to say I'm comparing Our Town to Sweet Apple Acres).>I won't stand for any random ponies out-appleing the apple pony.Too late, Twilight asserted dominance back in Applebuck Season. AJ needs a strong magical unicorn in her life.>It's not traditional if that way of life was never a tradition.I suppose that's true, but traditions all have to start somewhere right. Didn't the Applepie hearthswarming say something about that?
>>42564148Sweet Apple Acres is Ponyville, the founding point even. They take part in the same traditions such as Winter Wrap Up and Running Of The Leaves.>Mary Sue-nicorn since s1Yawn, we know, don't care, limited magic, le cope, muh supremacy, etc.>traditions all have to start somewhere right.True, but then that makes just about every pony traditional and compatible for shipping, doesn't it? She's not gonna change the zap apple ritual or anything, though she will be happy to make snarky jokes all in good fun. Glimmy didn't get to participate in traditions in her youth so she'll be happy to join in the fun.

>>42567044>the only others in town I can see sharing her beliefs are other farmersAnd those beliefs are?>Ponyville is a fairly liberal place. As opposed to Sweet Apple Acres because?>She's not gonna change the zap apple ritual or anythingWell what is it? Is she going to think up new recipes and ways to improve the farm, or will she accept Applejack's ways as they are?
>>42591862>And those beliefs are?>As opposed to Sweet Apple Acres because?Read the reply chain.>Well what is it?>A basic food recipe is the exact same thing as a literal annual tradition with historical significance.Stop playing dumb.
>>42591969All you said was farmers are conservative and not part of liberal Ponyville. A silly headcanon that I'm giving a hard disagree on.>stop playing dumbYou said that she would be snarky about AJ's traditions, because Glimmer knows they're silly and can be improved. AJ is proud and competitive, I don't think she'd put up with that much belittling of her ways. I'm just rolling with what you gave me, but I think you're ignoring a pretty obvious lovers quarrel for the sake of defending the ship.
>>42592044No other sector in Ponyville functions like SAA/OT. The Apples having different accents and being southern stereotypes shows they're not really the same as everyone else in town either, the m6 are all very different to one another, Ponyville is a melting pot. When you're an Apple you are expected to do your part for the farm and uphold their way of life. A typical Ponyville resident has the freedom to be whatever they want to be, like Rarity ended up very very different than her parents. There's a huge difference between an apple pie and the zap apple ritual. How does one exactly "improve" a tradition anyway? Tradition is based on lore, they do the song and dance because that's what they did the first time. There is no "improving" that, change it and it's no longer the same thing that represents the discovery of zap apples. Starlight's type of snark is just playful banter, making light fun of the silliness isn't going to offend AJ who is self aware enough to admit that it does look silly, especially after Starlight wears the bunny suit and hops around. I don't consider improving a recipe on an apple pie or thinking up new ways to use apples as stepping on tradition's toes as those things aren't related. Apples are simply their favorite food, they're biased and proud of their farm product. They're not eating apples because of tradition but because they love it. I think AJ would be happy to brainstorm with Glimmy new apple recipes to show everyone in town how great apples are. I don't see AJ as completely stagnant, she is still willing to learn new things, some of her episodes are even about her getting over her stubbornness.
>>42593070>some of her episodes are even about her getting over her stubbornness.NTA, but I don't actually even find Applejack to be all that stubborn in the first place desu. Out of all the mane 6, she's usually one of the ones who's most likely to make compromises or extend an olive branch. She pretty consistently is show to be pretty willing to step outside her comfort zone for the sake of someone else, and she does so pretty often. I just find her stubbornness to be a greatly overstated trait, especially when all the others are just as stubborn about their own things, they just don't receive episodes telling them to be different.
>>42593095True and I agree her stubbornness is greatly overstated. Part of her usual role playing the straight man is to be the more reasonable one over the others who are acting stubborn. AJ's first episode probably skewed a lot of people's impression of her.
>>42593122>AJ's first episode probably skewed a lot of people's impression of her. It's funny, in hindsight I think AJ and Twilight are the characters who had the most character development in season 1, but most people wrote them off as boring and stagnant back then because their personalities weren't as flashy as the others. AJ and her actions in Applebuck Season is one of the few rare examples of a character permanently changing their behavior and not repeating a mistake in future episodes.
>>42593070Accents aren't enough to convince me Ponyville isn't strongly overlapping culturally with SAA. I've lived in small towns with rural and standard accents intermixed. "Melting Pot" outsiders like Twilight are expected to assimilate to Ponyville/SAA traditions.>When you're an Apple you are expected to do your part for the farm Yep, chores, like any family would.>and uphold their way of lifeNope, see Aunt Orange and how much freedom Apple Bloom is allowed with Twilight, Zecora, and her crusading. The Apples being shocked by any Apple pony not appleing is a big meme.
>>42593215From my perspective Ponyville isn't exactly a small town and the main area where most everyone lives is more like the suburbs, filled with different kinds of ponies and a lot of elaborate shops. Ponyville doesn't really have a single identity, the m6 being so different from one another showcases the gathering of many different ideas under one banner. I don't think following traditions like Winter Wrap Up necessarily means everyone participating has the same beliefs, like celebrating Independence Day doesn't mean you're right or left it just means they're American.>Aunt OrangeEither you'll turn into an apple or an orange, that's baked into their way of life.>how much freedom Apple Bloom is allowedAJ does rodeo for fun too. I'm not against having hobbies, I don't think they interfere with their farm life.
>>42592995I see...
>>42593658>actually some traditions aren't part of one shared culture>actually Oranges count as Cpples too>actually those are all just hobbiesOk, cool head canons, what the fuck ever.
>>42594256>non-sequiturI'm not sure what your beef is, but I feel you're just being a contrarian at this point, brother.
>>42594297Disagreeing with the way you see Ponyville and SAA is not contrarian, it's my view. You've cherry picked shared traditions apart, and threw the strongest evidence I have of Apples not being any less free to choose their destiny than any Ponyville civilian right in the trash. I'm simply done.
>>42594338Fair, I think we fundamentally disagree on what traditions are among other things and it seems we also disagree on the influence destiny has on ponies as well.
>>42594481Traditions are traditions. How you go about lumping cultures and politics together with them is where we differ.>we also disagree on the influence destiny has on ponies as well.Ironic, given how the show spells out how cutie marks work quite plainly.
>>42594661eh, I really don't think preferring to eat apple-based foods is considered a tradition, but that's whatever. The show keeps things vague enough to allow us to fill the details however we wish, that's part of the magic of it all.>Ironic, given how the show spells out how cutie marks work quite plainly. This is an entirely different topic, but I'm curious what your viewpoint on cutie marks is since you brought it up yourself, I have a lot to say about it.
