In the summer of my life, I had the opportunity to finally be the adoptive father of a filly. It was not a planned event, for no man ever plans on taking on an orphaned little mare. Why would he? Men wish only for the happiness of ponies, and a pony losing their parents is a travesty. It makes one wonder if Princess Celestia even exists.Yet, here I was, having been appointed guardianship after attempting to rescue a filly I found rummaging through the dumpster of a back alley restaurant. She must have been barely forty moons old, and even the stains covering her flank made no illusions that she was quite without a Cutie Mark. My heart ached when I saw her; the injury worsened when, upon me approaching her, she cowered, backing away and gazing at me with her large, cerulean eyes. At the time, I had believed she was experiencing fear, and no man wants a pony to fear them. In later conversations, I came to realize she was not afraid, but rather ashamed.Ponies live a life of ataraxia. It is a term they do not know, and instead use the looser term “harmony”. This filly knew on an instinctual level that her states of homelessness, hunger, and isolation did not promote harmony. Being discovered like this caused her to doubt her fillyhood, and her place in ponykind.I am proud to say that I adopted her. I worked hard for this filly. The nicest bubble bath bombs, the most fun toys, the cutest ribbons, and everything from alembics to xylophones to help her find her cutie mark. It was in rock climbing, you know.They interviewed my adoptive daughter after she ascended Mt. Fillymarejaro. She made sure everyone knew that she wouldn’t have made it to the top if she didn’t have a father pushing and supporting and loving her every step of the way. That if it weren’t for me, she wouldn’t have ever found her cutie mark. I wanted to have been there to remind her she put in all of the hard work to become successful. To tell her that loving her was never a struggle. That she is a mare worthy of affection. But I couldn’t.I couldn’t, because I woke up from the dream.
