I think Sunburst was jealous of Starlight's potential because of how much she overperformed whenever teaching her what to do. He never realized the synergy they had together, AKA their friendship, is what led to those feats of magic. Together they were powerful but his pride blinded him to that truth. It's why he was so embarrassed to see her in the Crystal Empire, and reconnecting with Starlight allowed her to see where he shined since he couldn't see it himself.
