Leap of Faith shows that the townsponies put a lot of stock in what she says, so I think having her on your side to speak on your behalf would go a long way in helping you to be treated more normally. The ponies can be kind of skittish towards new creatures, as Zecora shows, so having someone like her who's very trusted by the community would make getting by a lot easier. Even if ponies think you're freaky, they're probably pretty willing to trust Applejack.

In hindsight, I should have made the hypothetical so that you are on good terms with your waifu by default, and then the choice of who you pick as a friend is between the remaining 5. I think that would get more interesting discussion than everyone just defaulting to their waifu. Now that would be interesting to see what combinations people do.
