I think at this point I've read just about every single Vinyl Scratch x Octavia fanfic available on fimfiction, excluding the really short ones because I can't really get invested in a 5k word one-shot.Of those fanfics, some were stellar, some were pretty good, many were unfinished, and a lot were... clearly written by 14-year-olds.But, quality or not, many of them followed many a trope. Here, I have a list of ingredients for your ScratchTavia fanfic recipe. Most of the bad ones follow this recipe to a tee, but even some of the good ones involve some of these tropes.>The two meet in a bar. Bonus points if the bar is named "Fillyfoolers". They may not meet in the bar, (especially if it's a school setting) but a bar is almost always involved at some point in the story.>Vinyl will have an irrational fear of others seeing her eyes. However, she is somehow always very careless about revealing them, and the other characters are never affected by her eyes, so it's usually a nothing conflict.>Vinyl will IMMEDIATELY start calling Octavia by a pet name (Octy or Tavi, usually) the instant she learns Octavia's name, and Octavia will always be taken aback and be like "what did you call me?">The two will argue about grammar.>The two will fall in love almost immediately, despite no buildup or chemistry being established. No slow burn allowed.>Before the two even realize they're in love, side characters will somehow pick up on their attraction to each other and tease about it very blatantly.>One of them must wind up in the hospital at some point.>The main conflict has to involve lesbianism being forbidden for some reason. There are a few more I could come up with, but these are the major ones. And a lot of them can be chalked up to "poor writing". For instance, the homophobia and hospitalization tropes both feel like "the conflict can not naturally arise from the characters themselves, but instead must be thrust upon their perfect little romance by outside forces". "We need conflict now, so boom, big accident that puts Tavi in the hospital". Even so, many of these tropes appear in good fics as well, and it has me curious. What would it be like for a fanfic to purposely follow all of these terrible tropes, but to also be written competently? I'd do it myself, but I'm already busy with other projects... It's a fun thought experiment regardless.

Like, I could just assume that people know University Days and Accidental Harmony and Syncopation and all that, but what if they don't? I know before I delved into fic-reading, I hadn't heard of any of them except University Days. My list is also quite large, so it's hard to pick and choose. There's also the issue of how many of them are unfinished, because those are difficult to recommend even if they're good.I could just throw a list of everything I have categorized as "might read again" and better. (I categorize my fics based on whether I think I will want to read it again in the future. Some fics don't get rated highly here even if they're good, however, so it's a weird system.)

Perhaps they almost kiss while they’re drinking at the bar and Octavia snaps out of it at the last moment or something.>Octavia struggles with her feelings, scared and confused, opting to repress them as Vinyl pines after her quietly in their friendship.

This gets extra awkward if the two live together at this point in the story and Octavia hears how loud the two are(she might even clop to it while crying)After the fight Vinyl could feel even more insecure about her eyes as maybe Octavia said something about them, like they scared her or she insulted them. This adds to the Vinyl depression arc.

But, I do recall how in it Vinyl suffered from sleeping issues and was kinda on a suicidal spectrum, mostly because she was living a very self destructive life and I think Octavia like offered to help her, but cannot recall what their relationship was in that story

Finished re-reading University Days. It was the first ScratchTavia fic I read when I began my reading binge about a year ago, and now that I've read pretty much every other ScratchTavia fic in existence, it felt right to circle back around and give it another spin.All in all, it's a decent fic. Very cute and comfy, not too long, not too challenging. Pretty well-written, though I take issue with a few things, and it does fall prey to a lot of the usual tropes. But that's the thing, is it was one of the first to do these tropes, and it was incredibly influential in that regard. Most of the tropes are actually handled a lot better than a lot of implementations I've seen. Yeah, the two argue right out the gate about whose music is superior, but it ends there, and in the context of the rest of the fic, that argument actually feels out of character for them. The portrayals of the duo are far from stereotypical. Vinyl isn't obnoxious or dubstep-obsessed, Octavia doesn't beat her over the head every five seconds. The conversations flow. It's kind of fascinating.The strangest part about this fic is how unspecial it would be if it had been created at any other time. But it was one of the first, and it was made at the peak of the fandom. This fic had buzz, discussion, fanart, fan MUSIC of incredibly quality (that Cherax song is genuinely beautiful). The fic has over 120k views, which feels almost unheard of, and because of this fic, so many other works were inspired. Its specialness comes from its time and place more than its actual quality (which it does have pretty good quality, but it's not THAT good, you know?)It's bizarre. Reading this, and having the anni stream at the same time... It really does remind me of how good we had it back then. What we have now is fine, but... That energy from back then is sorely missed. The audience, the fervor with which people celebrated new works...Not sure if I'll ever read it again. It held up better than I expected, but it's still nowhere near my favorites. Blame my bias towards drama. Their romance is just too perfect, too simple and clean to be believable, as heartwarming as it is to read through. But I can at least appreciate it for its place in this fandom's history.
