Winter Wrap Up doesn't make any sense. Pegasi use magic to fly but they don't get dinged. Earth ponies have inherent magic and they don't get dinged either. Ponyville just doesn't like unicorns.

It we're purely taking the episode at face value, it's not about an earth pony tradition but rather an ancient tradition, how all of Equestria did it before they figured out spells. That's why pegasi are allowed to fly, they've always known how to, whereas unicorns had to learn to cast spells.
