If anything I would figure regular telepathy would be even more plot-convenient. Sunset having to physically touch someone adds good limitations - she can't just scan a crowd for what she's looking for, she needs to pick a specific person out and make contact to get their memories. Plus it fits the theme of empathy with her having to literally reach out to someone.

I absolutely feel that the crown transformation scene feels like it had a scene cut, wasted chance for some drama.

Even if EqG1 was fairly bare for her, I still think her original concept was strong on its own: Celestia having other students (even personal proteges) before Twilight makes a lot of sense and I really liked the idea of one going rogue, especially with the angle that she's jealous of Twilight for being given all the power she always wanted as an alicorn.
Plus, she plays the alpha bitch bully role so straight it's enjoyable in her sheer over the top attitude and meanness.

It's definitely good, but it's a bit too dark for Hasbro. Even if at the time Disney was already testing the waters with Gravity Falls and definitely became even darker with Owl House and Amphibia, Hasbro has always gone for the safe route. They wouldn't have approved this.


But I'll admit, it works. It would've made EQG1 so much more memorable for all children worldwide.

Rainbow Rocks was pure unadulterated kino as always. It still amazes me what this movie manages to do to elevate Sunset herself and the entire Equestria Girls franchise as a whole, it redeems both in a literal and metaphorical sense with more heart and talent than I would have ever thought the spinoff capable of based on first impressions.
And it's still only the start of her journey. Love this bacon-haired girl like you wouldn't believe.
