This is the alternative MLP fan site general thread. Discussion, development suggestions, and criticisms are all welcome here.

SFW Filter Month Edition

>why alternate boorus?
The absolute state of Derpibooru has led to the development of various alternatives. Many altbooru staffmembers are present ITT, listening to comments and answering questions.
Note that this is NOT the Derpibooru drama general. Please keep posts about Derpibooru in the mlpg.co thread.

I've been using ponerpics for stockpiling images as someone told me twibooru and ponybooru both blocked Aryanne content.

Is this true or have i been duped?
>>
>>42762959
You've been duped.
>>
>>42762959
Ponybooru has not blocked Aryanne content.
Of the 126 images tagged with Aryanne that have been removed, 70% of them are duplicate images, 25% are from the same DNP image being uploaded 20 times (and another 4 times), and the remaining handful of images stem from various artists' DNPs.
None of them have been removed just because Aryanne happened to be present.
Twibooru will have had fewer images of her removed on account of them not doing DNPs.
>>
>>42762959
You've been massively duped. One of the main reasons ponybooru and twibooru got to exist in the first place was because of Aryanne.

Both Ponerpics and Twibooru have the same hardline no-takedown policy. Choosing one isn't a moral dilemma, it just comes down to which particular features you want (e.g. Poner's forums vs. Twi's text & MP4 uploads).
>>
Bonk.
>>
>>42763143
Ponerpics and Ponybooru are communities, Twibooru is just an archive, not intended to engage with the people there (comments are normally turned off and only anonymous). Twibooru keeps everything up, Ponerpics keeps mostly everything up, Ponybooru is shady in that regard, there was some drama over a picture being deleted without the artist's request or something but I forgot what it was.

This is mostly because /mlp/ hasn't completely died and this thread exists. The forums are rigged to be operational pretty quickly after the last shitshow.

Not to invoke the threadschizo, but Poner's policies are more lenient when it comes to non-pony OCs. I can't think of one pic that's been deleted off Poner but is still on Twi.

You should never listen to those people, Anon. They don't care about mares. They only care about furthering their political ideas using pone as a vehicle. They are literally the same as the danger hairs, but on the other direction.
>>
>>42764056
>Poner's policies are more lenient when it comes to non-pony OCs.
I'm mostly talking about their stance on paywalled content. Twibooru's is a clear "we're going to keep it up anyway, cope and seethe" whereas Ponerpics doesn't have a clear policy and seems to mostly keep it up merely out of inactivity of the moderation, but that's not a guarantee.
>>
>>42764708
Mostly true, and they're just as insufferable to be around as the woke leftoids on Derpi. Shame that sensible people no longer exist.
>>
>>42763143
>>42763846
Basically.

Twibooru has a lot more stuff that has been deleted from derpi for dnp and alike. >>42752855
However it has a tagging problem, there are not enough users to compete with derpi on that regard and it doesn't automatically sync the edits.
>>
>>42765108
Maybe Twibooru's importer is just faster than Ponerpics so it catches more.

Also don't forget that Twibooru automatically adds the tag "deleted from derpibooru" to loli uploads. The posts may have never even existed on Derpibooru and Ponerpics, due to its more active community, removes the misleading tags on import from Twibooru.
>>
>>42765144
I checked by hand a couple pics that were uploaded on derpi about 12 years ago, the artist tag has been purged some time later for dnp, and I wan't able to find these images on poner. Haven't tried ponybooru, so I think they only exist now on twi, since the deviantart source is gone too.

Back in the good old days of 2020 when Ponerpics first popped up, there was some consideration of DNPs:
https://desuarchive.org/mlp/thread/35572418/#35582604
Thankfully, this never materialized into anything. The DNP request system on Ponerpics is essentially a practical joke aimed at anyone who'd be petty enough to waste time demanding his horsey scribbles be erased from history.
That's not to say the Site Rules page shouldn't be updated. The removal of "More rules, particularly concerning the rights of artists, may be added in the future" was a good start, but "This is a My Little Pony Archive Site" isn't as concrete of a statement as I'd like it to be, considering the innumerable self-described "archives" that purge their collections at the drop of a hat.
>>42765144
>Twibooru automatically adds the tag "deleted from derpibooru" to loli uploads.
It never has. The [lolicon] and [shotacon] tags used to imply [banned from derpibooru], but that implication was removed over two months ago following an internal discussion over the precise nature of Derpi's lolisho policy. Spoiler alert: it's as inconsistently applied as the rest of them.

I believe there was a period awhile ago where e621 did a purge of a bunch of content, it might have been anthro foalcon or loli or something like that. At that time I downloaded all of the MLP content from e621, and I've had it sitting around as a project to import into Twibooru at some point.

Not quite: circa 2020, they set the default blacklist to hide every nonsafe image tagged with "young", forcing you to make an account if you want to access that material. Still good to have an archive; did you scrape all the metadata? e621 sourcelinks can be invaluable in tracking down unuploaded pone.
>>
>>42775599
There was some kind of purge a lot more recent than that - I'm thinking either this year or last. I know something specific triggered me to do it. Yes, it includes all the metadata the API returned, if I recall.

Since most of these sites are built on derpis stuff maybe you horsefuckers could help me out where the mods of derpi can't. I have made a bot that auto downloads a user's favrioted posts from various sites including derpi. We use pagination to get the users favriotes since I didn't see a way to sort by date favrioted through the api call at first. I do see one now. But unsure if this will help or do anything. We send the users api key and monitor the responses. Apply now hard coded cool offs between each download of 6 seconds and when getting the bot check from their middleware we even employ a 60 seconds back off, 10 times longer than they say is needed. This works and then randomly we get that ip blocked. I know it's their middleware and seemingly some ddos protection. But is there something I need to add? It seems to happen a bit at random. But the bots inefficient and I wonder if the search methodology is hitting a daily api use limit thats not listed. The bot checks every 2 hours, but because a user can favriote a post from any time period, and favriotes aren't in chronological order I have to use the pagination to get each page. So if it's a 10k limit with 2k pages for a user than that would jive with what I'm seeing. If it is a hidden cap then I suppose using the sf and sd will solve it then alongside comparing id's. If two are found in the database on that page to have already been downloaded then do not go to the next page, end derpi loop. I just don't know if that will solve it or simply mask the issue though. And if i add more actions then we would still hit that cap. Like I said its middleware so I know it's not written into the sites framework that the alt boorus are based on. But I'm not a network and security nerd so help is appreciated. Seems dumb to have a bot check on an api, where the mods say "your bot has no way of passing". But it's apparently ddos protection
>>

>>
>>42777505
>where the derpi mods couldn't
>since most of these sites are built on derpi

Felt i pretty much explained why? I also assume I'll probably get requests for alts too, and I would be happy to support them. So if they have similar things it can be headed off. And generally this is viewed by admins of the various boorus so it seems a good way to get more knowledgeable help, from pony first people.
>>
>>42777443
>Due to recent attacks, we have changed API search rate limits.
>Before: 20 requests per 10 seconds
>After: 10 requests per 10 seconds
If you're using pagination then each new page counts as a new request. You're definitely going to want to sort by date favorited after a first (slow) query for the updates.
>>
>>42777443

Does your third world shithole not have paragraph breaks?
>>
>>42777309
Sure. It's always good to have redundancies. You never know when you might need them,
>>
>>42777604
Turns out I can't. I thought that was an option with modification date. But that refers to modification of the file date, which makes sense. So i don't believe there is a date added to favriotes sorting. We already added a hard coded pause for downloads but good point, if there are no new favriotes on that page durring a check it will adhere to the 20 requests per 10 seconds posted on the api docs. Maybe that's it? Though we should have seen the back off requests follow those calls. I'll try decreasing the pagination rate.

We are the only booru to use Derpy's color scheme as the default theming, and therefore are the best.

>>42778657
It is not "often" banned, and certainly not intentionally. A couple years ago PonerPics was being overloaded by bot spam, and I blocked a number of nations to try to stop it. It was found that one of those nations was the one that Twibooru's importer came from. This was for a period of at most a week, and was rectified as soon as I became aware.

A couple months ago, there was another serious issue with bot spam, and I saw a rule in cloudflare with a name implying it blocked a specific country that was a problem. It actually blocked [country redacted], which is Twibooru's Importer country ID. That too, was undone as soon as I found out, after only a few days. It's a total of maybe 10 or at most 14 days of blockage in over five years of both websites existing.

For anyone else questioning - this and the rest of that part of the reply are completely true.
Recently (and by this I mean probably 6-8 months ago,) something changed, and the Philomena websocket endpoint on PonerPics stopped working, so the importer relying on it stopped working as well. This happened on Derpibooru as well, but for a different reason, several months later. I've worked on an importer that doesn't rely on that endpoint, which I use for Derpibooru right now, but I just haven't set it up for PonerPics yet. I guess I can investigate that right about now.

Sorry, I don't generally assume malice, because I think all the altboorus probably have mostly the same objective. It's just, like I said, you never know these days because everyone seems to have an agenda.
>>
>>42779655
I also had an issue with my own PonerPics scraper. It would work for a few thousand images, and then it would get stuck with some error from the site. No matter what I did I could not get my scraper to automatically recover from the error. It was like the error was cached even though nothing on my end should have been caching anything. Not even a half hour delay before retrying the image would work. But if I manually restarted my scraper, the site would immediately work again. It was strange. I think it took me over two months to scraper Poner because of this.
>>
>>42779680
Yes, that was the reason for that report.

Sounds like a bug in your code, but I'd need to see it to be sure.
Speaking of which, I've published the code for the new Twibooru scraper/booru monitor - one can find it here if they are so interested: https://github.com/Twibooru/nuboorumon
Why is it in C#? I don't know, I was probably drunk when I wrote it and opened my C# IDE instead of my Python editor.

Neat. Do note that the standard scraping rate is quite quick as I was trying to get through as many images as I could while I was actively sitting at my computer and keeping an eye on it. The delay was initially longer, but I lowered it when I realized the rate didn't seem to have any impact on the error.

In lieu of another empty bump, allow me to pose a question: What internet service most desperately needs a pony alternative?
>>
>>42800860
Pony search engine? Pony themed weather service? Pony datacenter?
>>
>>42800860
Image board. None of the alternatives are good. NHNB is a purity spiral, /mlpol/ is politurd crap. Need a place that allows everything /mlp/ does (yes, including EqG - just put it on a separate board) just without faggot moderation.
>>
>>42802143
Please, define a "good imageboard".
>without faggot moderation
Not possible by design. Imageboard is a site which you can just open and start talking with people. No reputation checks to filter out shitposters. Else you'll get a forum, a curated chat. Or a "rulecucked" "purity spiral". After some time fighting with indesirable users any moderation will become "faggot". It's been like this for more than a decade, another "good" imageboard gets created by people who got fed up with a previous one. Without faggot mods, gay rules, and with blackjack and hookers. But after a short while it becomes the same place everybody left, everyone keeps stepping on the same rake, over and over again. Bleeding users all the time. Imageboards are an evolutionary dead end of the places to have a discussion with other people on the internet.

I'm not an oldfag, yet I've witnessed this happen with a couple imageboards I'm not going to name. I've talked with actual oldfags and they generally agree. Everything you don't like about 4chan will arise again an again on any imageboard with time, like mushrooms after the rain until it dies. Poltards, shitposters, spammers, baiters, retards, everything that cannot be filtered in a "good" way on an imageboard. By design.

Nobody even needs it, people here are talking all the time how they only keep coming to this site because it's not dead yet, and if it were to die they'd rather go to twitter/discord/other small groups and chats. There you can filter out cancer. On imageboards you can't. You can only make another one when the previous becomes too stitted up to use. But that always leads to userbase fragmentation, thus imageboards are a dead end.

Don't try make a "good" imageboard. It's not possible. Try to make a place to have a good time and fun for a little while, and you may succeed. Just keep in mind that it'll inevitably become "bad", attract cancer and people will start complaining about everything you've done. Kill it with grace and let someone else continue the ride.

>>
>>42802593
>these aren't equivalent to imageboards

That's the point. Cancer lives by design as long as lives the host. It's inevitable. You can either keep switching hosts when they die from cancer, or become one with it.

>>
>>42805201
>>
>>42806250
There's nothing worth archiving on this board anymore. Greens are super rare nowadays and anything worthwhile is normally already submitted to Ponepaste. Images are nothing but reposts of reposts or AI slop. And even if Desuarchive disappears there's still abc (even if it doesn't archive full images). Hosting a 4chan archive is a huge amount of work because of the amount of abuse made possible thanks to a certain site with little added benefit for the community.

If anything, it's likely more useful to host an archiver for the altchans that have MLP-oriented boards.

Not true, I haven't cleared my cookies literally in over a year. It's just 4chan being retarded thinking they can fight the proxy site by banning genuine, legitimate large-scale ISPs like my own, literally one of the biggest providers of my country.

Only very few genuine posters (and a slew of people who want to shit up the site) are willing to post using the proxy site when their ISP is banned, either because they don't know about it, consider it a hassle or because they don't trust it considering the authors are legit pedos. 4chan is basically killing their entire user base by doing this, but then again I don't expect this site to be alive for many more years anyway. It doesn't work as a honeypot for "extreme right" political views anymore now that the proxy site exists. Country flags on /pol/ have become meaningless, for example.

I mean you don't really have to. You can use it from tor even with cookies disabled making it practically impossible to stalk you. Cockless has a track record of deleting things the rules explicitly allow while allowing things that have no relation to pony. No amount of calling everyone who speaks about it a pedo or a schizo will change that objective fact.

We had all that shit integrated with Skype. People could voice chat and shit on MSN messenger. Nboody wants to downgrade to running 30 different programs that badly do what you can get out of a single program now, with embeds and everything.
>>
>>42850970
Code bloat. There's no need for a single tool that encompasses every use case. I have no need of voice/video chat with internet strangers so I don't want my chat application to integrate those things by default.

This kind of garbage leads to me having several applications that do many things (poorly at that) that I don't use besides the thing that I actually downloaded the program for. For example, Thunderbird having a chat client that I don't use (and I never heard of anyone else using it either) or Opera (I don't use it but I remember the debacle at the time) integrating an incredibly barebones torrent client.

Not any anon in this discussion, but I feel like "Discord replacement" that is as featureful, can be depended on and is globally interconnected so that everyone can talk to everyone else, is more difficult to achieve.
Not to ignore the effort required, but boorus? Web photo gallery. PonyTube? Web video gallery. pone.social? Microblog with federation that's more or less expected to work well (I don't know if users there talk only to other pone.social users or if they do branch out).
There are "Discord clones" like Spacebar, Revolt and probably a few more, but majority of them seem to miss the point of "global reach". Like sure, I could host a Nextcloud Talk or Zulip instance, but I think nobody would want to create an account on specific instance to talk to people there. I'd need to have a good reason to convince those people to go through this effort - two cases I've seen this work are: company chat servers where each employee gets an account, and private trackers where people will figure out how to use an IRC client to chat with others, incentivized by possible rank-up so they can see recruitment threads to other trackers. 'sup GGn.
But I digress. I believe people expect chat tools/platforms to be just as good as Discord at everything, and at this point either you pull funding out of somewhere and create yet another global platform (and never get burned by VC funding causing you to do enshittification on your platform), or you attempt to separate your funds from the success of your platform as a whole. I think sensible federation is the only way to achieve the latter, to offload hosting costs to passionate fans of your protocol.
It's a difficult problem to solve, especially since the communication is supposed to be as instant as on centralized platforms. Matrix takes an arguably heavy approach to this, but it's permanently in a "two more weeks" state IMO. XMPP to my knowledge doesn't offer truly decentralized group chats, which might be important or not. And all of those cool "selfhosted Discords" without federation I saw, expect you to convince everyone you'd like to talk with to create an account on (You)r server.

I forgot what I wanted to say with this post. Maybe that we've got three options:
>doing this "better" as global service, operated by one entity will require too much money to avoid the service becoming worse when you run out of money
>doing this small scale, centralized around specific communities will introduce enough friction that most people won't bother to use it
>doing this as a bunch of bigger or smaller interconnected instances that allow everyone to talk to everypony, will require a lot more time to do properly, but might be eventually a viable solution that will be "better" than Discord, and will not have a necessary downfall
I calmly hope Matrix gets better, and that's where I'd direct your attention and time if you can contribute it. I don't feel other projects aim at the right problem.

Oh, and please excuse me repeating myself in that post. I hope some of the insight is helpful. Surely it's not any anon's responsibility to fix global problems, but we can find other people who already work on solutions, and contribute if we have free time, putting a bit of pony soul in those projects.
I'd also suggest avoiding ragebait, since for some reason it's too easy to fall into those when talking about chat tools. The inherent network effect of those, combined with human laziness, can make a person treat their set of chat platforms as part of their identity. Maybe that's why there's so many blog posts bashing Matrix about being "bloat", and praising the lightweight XMPP as if Matrix was attempting to solve the exact same problem as XMPP, and thus being a bunch of retards reinventing the wheel. It's more nuanced than that, hopefully you can find someone on the internet with a better explanation than whatever I can recall right now. The multi user chat rooms were the difference most important to me, and I believe that most people would also expect this graceful degradation rather than chatroom being entirely unavailable if a janny pony tripped over the power cable.
So the protocol that does message passing can be relatively easy to federate between servers controlled by many separate entities, but a distributed, eventually consistent database of messages has a lot of complexity involved if you don't control all the servers. And a database of messages governed by one entity obviously is easier to implement with high reliability and large featureset that people expect.

>nobody uses it
I believe some education is needed to get average person to not be afraid of less obvious services. As you've seen so far I approached the problem with chat from technical view: it's less stable/more barebones than the "big" alternatives, and here's why. But obviously there's that human aspect of laziness, which I can understand.
Imagine if the YouTube, Twitter suddenly included content from PonyTube and pone.social. Would you still say nobody uses those pony platforms? Comparing numbers - I would. But would that be important, as long as people on other service could see videos uploaded, and drawfags drawings? I wouldn't say that PonyTube/pone.social were unused and useless in this scenario.
But perhaps we're talking about different problems to solve (is that more or less intentional "moving of goalposts?"). The tools are there, I believe Mastodon is mostly capable of being a decent platform (truth be told I don't use microblogs), PeerTube is more than sufficient as video hosting site, although discoverability of content might suck more than on YT. If you want to validate the existence of those pony services, do you simply need more people to be in touch with them?
Or instead of me assuming, what is the exact problem with those services that you'd like to solve?
>>42852760
I wouldn't blame anon to that extent. YT, Twitter, Discord all have the power of network effect behind them - you'd need everyone you interact with to move to the other platforms, if you wanted to effortlessly stop using the platforms you consider bad. It's a slow process, and requires minimal friction to switch. I believe this means you'd need to find a way to integrate with the lesser platforms, e.g. in case of Matrix to set up bridges between pony guilds on Discord side and equivalent spaces on Matrix. So that people can have the option to slowly move, and not lose contact with other users or the content over there.
I believe this can be done in a longer time frame, as all huge services inevitably march towards squeezing their users for shareholder/corporate profit, but you can't let yourself fall into the hole of cynicism in the progress.

I would believe it, but I'm just as ready to believe a single utter autist would be dedicated enough to do something like this. Kimmo, cbat spammer and many others over the years have proven to me a single dedicated parasite can be more tenacious than all government agencies combined.

IIRC he got a letter from them in june for allowing posting "sfw" child models on his site, he just banned it and they never bothered him again. Really makes you think.

What's the difference? Seems like it's the same image, the characters are just shuffled around. Like half of them are furries, but still there are mlp villians too so, why?
>>
>>42854730
>pony related exists elsewhere
congrats you found elsewhere

I opened the deleted image on derpi and literally can't see any meaningful difference between them??

I guess people don't like their ponies to disappear
>>
>>42854758
I suspect the rationale is exactly that: the only difference between the two images is the character drawings being rearranged according to a different autistic organization scheme. Though if this is considered a duplicate, merging would have been a more fitting solution.

indeed, this is true and honest news, i am tired of pretending:
i, floorb, now identify as anon filly. i was always filly but i refused to publicly admit it until now. after much introspection i am now in the process of fillymaxxing my life back on track. i will only respond positively to filly based pronouns and names such as anon, filly, filler, anonfilly, filly anon, and other such names. i am not a fucking tranny nor a furfag, i never was and i never will be. i am literally a green filly. preemptively, i wnbaw because i am already a green horse and nothing else. end of story.
i do not anticipate my fillyness to affect my fan site management duties, truthfully i only expect it to enhance them, as it takes an autist to know one. i have been fillymaxxing for weeks now and nopony knew until now.
i am working on a filly based fan site for anons to learn about fillymaxxing and meet other fillys, and i am open to suggestions on what to include. i already have a fillymaxxing tutorial, diy guides for things like filly ears and tails, a filly guest book, etc.

Never had a chance to ask, but which booru has the most all encompassing content? Would it be correct to say that there's at least some unique images/videos in every booru?
>>
>>42857449
Twibooru should have almost all of it, and the combination of twibooru and ponerpics likely has almost certainly everything.
There are indeed some differences but they should be very minor. If something is on one altbooru but not another, it's probably because an importer might have been briefly broken and then didn't backfill reliably, or sometimes there are minor differences in moderation deleting some basically non-pony-related furshit pics that got imported from derpibooru.
Ponybooru is the exception because it has some limited artist takedown capabilities so technically it may intentionally have fewer images than the other two.
>>
>>42857679
That's good to know. Thanks for the explanation!
>>
>>42857679
Keep in mind that Poner doesn't support mp4s, so nothing in that format would be imported.

>>
>>42857679
Twibooru have holes. A lot of them. It's like swiss cheese. So your "almost" is doing A LOT of work here, considering the sheer number of missed images.
>>
>>42864467
99% of images are there. But that missing 1% is still a lot.

>>

>>

Is esl stuff allowed in PonePaste?
like, pastes in other languages
>>
>>42866190
i would personally say yes, as long as there's a disclaimer or something at the top in english indicating why it's pony related.
>>
>>42866379
BRB, translating The Anarchist Cookbook to Hebrew.
>>
>>42866379
I don't think there's much potential for abuse. Google Translate can turn any language into something that gives a faint clue what the text is about nowadays.
>>
>>42867941
This doesn't mean I disagree with your requirement for a disclaimer by the way. Just musing.
>>
>>42866379
>>42867944
IMO a disclaimer is not going to be very useful since if you don't check it yourself, it's going to be trivial to put some bogus disclaimer that's completely unrelated to the actual text
I bet you can use a local LLM for relatively effective language translation nowadays
>>
>>42868258
the point of the disclaimer is basically to flag to admins "hey, i'm not retarded or a spambot, be careful before you delete this"
>>
>>42866549
What?
>>
>>42868258
>I bet you can use a local LLM for relatively effective language translation nowadays
That's apparently what Firefox does for offline translations. It's good enough for cheeki breeki, in my experience.

So is the PonyTube upgrade complete? Is everything good now?

Also, has anyone heard from Lotus lately? And what is the current state of PonerPics?
>>
>>42872738
>And what is the current state of PonerPics?
I guess since it's currently working without being down every five minutes and there is someone who investigates your reports, it's in a perfectly fine one.
>>
>>42872747
I had thought I heard rumor that they were planning on performing some of their own site upgrades around this time. Also Lotus hasn't responded to my messages in about a month so I wanted to make sure everything was okay over there.
>>
>>42872738
as the honest and horseful assistant sysadmin of pony.tube i can say the upgrade is complete for now. if there are any issues, please let me or twifag know.
as for pone.social (i know you didnt mention it but im mentioning it), i intend to bring that up to date with latest mastodon as soon as i have the time.
