Bickering with some one in a friendship isn't too bad, but when you're talking about being romantically involved and living together on a daily basis, it starts to become a more serious problem. And that's aside from the fact that some of these characters simply have incompatible life goals and desires. Since rarijack was already brought up, Rarity's whole thing is she wants to move to the big city and live it up as a rich noblewoman running her business, and Applejack wants to keep to her family's farm in the countryside. Rarity really doesn't like farmwork or living the way Applejack does, and Applejack doesn't like the city or the culture there. It's a relationship that really wouldn't work because either way, one of them has to give up their life dream for it. It would be a terrible relationship where neither of them is really content with the other unless you just scrub over all the shit that makes it not work, and if you're going to do that then any ship can be made to work by just ignoring everything that makes it not work.

Dash could barely stand Fluttershy in season 1.Viewers need to see things for them to have significance. So if you show them nothing but characters acting a certain way, but then insist that they totally act the opposite way when you don't see them, then the viewer doesn't really have any reason to believe the latter. Anyone can be asserted to act any way off screen, but if most of the on screen games between AJ and RD have RD resorting to dirty tactics to win, then there isn't any reason for the viewer to assume she doesn't do the same thing off screen. You need to show, not tell, and one of FIM's series long mistakes is that it does way more telling than it does showing.

The show does more telling than it does showing I think. Plot mandated friendship lasers just don't quite cut it. But then you have stuff like the licensed GM Berrow books, where the Applejack book is just 100 pages of everyone fucking up her farm, violating her privacy, and having no regard for her or her wishes, and then at the end pulling a 180 and just telling us how great friends they are and how lucky she is to have even though they've objectively done nothing but screw her over for the whole book. And some of them only "helped" in the first place because of the benefits they would get from doing so, and not just for the sake of helping out a friend who needs it. Rainbow Dash gets treated pretty scummy in a lot of episodes too.Some of the friendships really do strike me as being a bit shallow and one sided, and only working really because the plot demands that it does.
