Also, I know that because there's a ton of snow there's a lot of foods that snowponies can't eat because crops don't grow, so what do they eat other than fish and berries? Perhaps milk?

Snowpitt is in a crater because someone thought it would be funny if Snowpitt was in a literal pit of snow. By that interpretation, none of the villages in art are Snowpitt. Also worth considering, I believe a few months ago it was suggested the usual snowpones we see have a summer village and a winter village to explain why we see them in igloos, tents, or wooden structures in different drawings.Lorewise, Snowpitt was founded where snowponies' earth pony ancestors huddled together to survive a blizzard. The crater provided protection from the wind, iirc. There's a snowpone holiday called "The Great Huddle" in remembrance of this and most villages make an annual trek to Snowpitt every winter for it. Basically snowpone Hearthswarming just like how "The Spirit Gathering" is snowpone Nightmare Night.
