She didn't build up any skills in her adult life that can be applied to anything other than warfare and, after the war, the kingdom didn't find a good use for those skills so she had to make her living outside of that.It's pretty much what happened to the KGB after the fall of the Soviet Union. They either became mercenaries in eastern Europe or organized criminals.
