Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

based as fuck fellow mint user. how did you manage to get it running with bottles? I couldn't manage to figure it out but I was able to figure it out with play on linux. how stable is it with bottles? I'd imagine it wouldn't be to different from play on linux since they both use wine, do you occasionally get windows call errors that pile up in the hundreds? 'cause I do occasionally and I have fuck all idea why. sorry for asking so many questions I'm just curious about another mint users perspective. nice apple nom by the way.

Pretty nice. I'd guess the shorter legs make her look younger.
>>
>>42846200
she looks young because of the proportion of the head, body, and legs. Heads do not grow much, body grows a fair bit, limbs grow most of all as far as dimensions go. So a smaller body and longer legs relative to the head would make it look older.

Wasn't sure where to post this, I was worried people on /jp/ might have a shitfit if they see a horse so after looking around I think this may be the proper thread. I've been thinking of ponifying some Touhou characters for a while and finally drew one today. This is ponified Tsukasa Kudamaki.
>>
>>42849187
You most certainly would've been banned, posting pony outside of MLP is a banable offence everywhere but here. Welcome to /MLP/ though and welcome to bale! She came out pretty good, I'd have to assume you have previous experience with art in general based on your results? I'm gonna assume you're new to drawing ponies specifically?
>>

>>42849141

>>
>>42849242
Aw thanks a bunch! Yes, I draw as my hobby in my free time. Normally I'm practicing female human figures and trying to improve. I actually used to draw ponies on occasion from like 2012-2014, usually for friends who would ask me to draw their OCs, but this is my first time drawing a pone in over a decade now. My family has been watching through MLP and they kind of pulled me back in, I keep having invasive thoughts about how certain Touhous would look or act if they were ponies. And also getting the songs stuck in my head...
>>
>>42849345
yeh np, with a time span that long its basically akin to starting over again lol. she came out cute by the way.
>>My family has been watching through MLP and they kind of pulled me back in
holy hell your family sounds so fucking unbelievably based.
>>And also getting the songs stuck in my head...
yeah that sounds about right the show had a lot of catchy tunes and generally good music.

I'm not too sure if you're gonna learn much here in bale considering you seem to have a solid enough grasp on what you're doing. besides some mild refinements here and there, there isn't much to criticize and most of it would be mild nitpicks/suggestions at best anyways. I do hope you decide to stick with drawing ponies 'cause it'd be neat to see where you go considering that pic is a very solid starting point. but still there are resources in the op you can check out if you feel like it and maybe you may find some of it helpful. hope to see you around!
>>
Alright Anons… I’m finally caving in and starting to learning how to draw… I tried art loosely a few years back but kinda got stuck since I didn’t really know how to configure my tablet as well as what program to use so I thought I’d ask here for some somewhat beginner friendly program recommendations! I already read though the guides OP sent but I feel like first hand reviews will always beat some paste haha

It's all bout the sketch and then use big blobs of colour to outline your shapes (it's kinda breaking some rules but I feel like it's easier than starting with the shadows) and then use darker tones to add depth, blend them lots (don't look at mine, I'm probably fucking some things up, digital painting on derpibooru has some great examples)
I feel like you got it figured out, you just need to keep going and use a blender brush more, If you're using clip paint I can send you some nice brushes

what program do you use? I use krita, make a top layer and set its layer property to "multiply" and color in my entire scene with a bright color (on the side where the light source is) a cool color (on the darker, unlite area) and if you want, an intermediary color in the middle that is somewhere in between the two, in terms of temperature, to help transition the bright to cool. once you have these colors drawn overtop your scene on that layer, adjust the layer opacity to a point where you like. now the last and important step, is to take your erase to out, and erase spots where you want light to shine on your scene. Be it, a character, scenery, buildings, etc.

I just wanna say all you out there who think they can’t draw or who are doubting themselves, you can do it. It just takes time. My first pony drawings were mouthless-faced kidney beans with legs, and now, years later, people pay for my art. You WILL get there, you just have to endure. Someday you’ll look back and cringe, endearingly, at your first pony drawings.
>>
>>42879436
>first time I've drawn anything in ages, let alone pone :D
I genuinely there's a few real artists out there who LARP as beginners and just try to deliberately make their art in a 'beginner' style with a few deliberate mistakes but still noticeably good so that they get praise, and this is one of them

Oh I'm really flattered, but truth be told beyond the extremely rare mspaint shitpost sketch for fun I really haven't actively drawn in something over a decade I think. I used to doodle on paper lots growing up for fun though so there's still some knowhow from that, haha. Some of the shapes were gotten by combing through pony pictures to get an idea of how things are supposed to look so maybe that was a thing too idk

>>42879471
Honestly I think the jaw is fine not gonna lie. There's room for ponies to have unique facial structures, I think.

I think alot of people need to take these words to heart. I never considered myself artistically inclined but this year at BABScon I went to a how to draw ponies panel and came up with pic related. I kept practicing and learned some tricks from better pony artists like curving the legs so they don't look like your character is a bean on stilts, and other specific examples. With only mild practice ive started making drawings im comfortable with like this >>42879437

I know for a FACT i traced this one off of the top screen of my DSi back in the day, I remember doing it now seeing it again. I can’t find anything older than this one, unfortunately. Yes, my first pony OC was a red and black edgepony.
>>
>>42879517
It's a good pony, im glad i got into MLP late and avoided starting with an edgelord OC
>>
>>42879522
I do recall giving them a sorta…rectifying story eventually when I matured a bit. Like, they thought they had to stand out and be unique and flashy and all that, when they really just needed to be themselves. Their mane actually is chocolate brown and their coat is more of a mahogany, earthy red, they just dye everything to achieve that flashy appearance. Think that was a good way to justify a red and black overtly edgy OC
>>
>>42879524
I guess i kinda took it to the other extreme and made my OC a bit too conservative with the brown mane and tan coat but im generally not a flashy person, the clothes though, as time went on i wanted to get a bit more creative and attempted to pursue a turn of the century mechanic back when they were considered highly skilled professionals. It wild seeing old pictures of mechanics with black coveralls and tie underneath. It seems to be the settled version at this point
>>
>>42879542
Nearly all my other OCs, furry ones, are natural colored with very few exceptions. If I make a fox, it’s rust orange. If I make a horse, it’s brown or gray, or blonde.

Funny you say turn of the century mechanic, I literally just finished this one like an hour ago. My cyberpunk mare at her day job, metal working, which is something I do myself. You can see how far I’ve come
>>
>>42879549
>Metalworking dayjob
based, bluecollar pride. I work as a mechanic, i generally get stuck doing diagnostics because im one of the few guys who understands how electronics work. Makes me wish for a time where my profession carried more respect. I always imagined equestria in my head cannon to be squarely in the golden age of mechanics right as the technology was new, exciting, and not well understood. It's dreamy. Escapism is pretty wonderful sometimes

>>
>>42879659

TBF, /create/ is for basically any sort of pony related creative endeavor.
>>
>>42879659
i had always assumed /create/ was mainly drawing but combined with all the other diy stuff so that they always had a thread so a music thread didnt slide super fast, more of a combination of all creative things into one rather than all non drawing creative endeavors
especially since bale is 'beginner and low effort art' so i just figured it was intended to be exclusively beginners
>>
>>42879628
well you'd be amazed how fast you can progress if you keep studying and analyzing your mistakes, I think it speaks to the quality of the PDF in the sticky and advice given here rather than people smurfing to get easy yours
I'd rather have art of all kinds of skill levels here, people just start out as beginners and keep posting as they get better
>>
>>42879667
>>42879674
can't disagree with that but nobody really posts their drawings in /create/ anymore, apart from drawing together on the canvas
/bale/ seems to be the designated posting grounds for drawfags
>>
>>42879566
>Art has been my therapy
Couldn't agree more. But i started with fan fiction, less pressure there and it's a bit easier to make something objectively good. When i wrote my OC orgin story i felt at home there writing it and it helped me pull through and finish my apprenticeship and become a full tech
>>42879568
Good luck anon
>>
>>42879887
Yeah, I searched the catalogue and this was the only thread I could find where people were posting drawings. Originally I thought to try the /create/ or /draw/ thread but it seemed like one was for other OC primarily, because I didn't see any art being shared at the time, and the other was for requests only. I know I'm not technically "beginner" since I draw non-pony often enough, but it has been a decade since I drew pones and I feel comfortable here. I also like seeing all the effort put into art and learning, the links at the top already helped me a ton trying to get back into the groove of pony art.
>>
>>42879628
Again, flattered, but I think part of /bale/ is the culture of just being able to draw with no expectations of being good. The fact new and old artists come together to just make ponies and have fun is the best shit, and what makes this one of the best art communities I've seen. Besides, OC is the lifeblood of any imageboard, and I think seeing the occasional skilled artist pop in gives lots of variety and fun and even inspiration for lads like me.

That being said, if what you're saying is true, then I am curious to polish out the mistakes I noticed in my scribbling and see what kind of cute scratchy mspaint art I can slop out.

I was laying in bed looking at my drawing last night analyzing it, and I tried my best to fix up a few of the parts that were bothering me. The snout was really big and like, going full sideways despite the perspective being at an angle, the mane was a little flat, and the hind legs (they're still a little off imo) and cutie mark looked kinda weird. I think I made it better. This is my first pony (aside from a rough sketch I did on paper like 13 years ago) and I had a lot of fun with it :D

Gonna move onto another drawing now 'cuz agonizing over little details is kinda silly, especially when it's in mspaint which doesn't have any layering tools.

>>42882445
Very well. Though I personally don't believe AI compositions that have a traditional basis need to go into the AI thread like it's some leper colony. It's just another process in the artist toolbox.
>>
>>42882434
I, personally, never used nor will use AI in my process. not only it feels like it takes my agency from the work, but also the end result feels less personal and valuable to me.
>>
>>42882453
>>42882545
I suspect most people use a blend of these two posters. 1. They use AI as a tool. 2. They use it in limited ways and don't admit it or mention they use it in their process.
>>
>>42882545
Sounds like you're treating art like some sort of holy process that has no worth unless it fits certain widely accepted criteria. In that case, I do hope you also eschew all other digital tools as well. Stop using an eraser too - after all, unless every stroke is conscientiously made it is not "valuable".
>>
>>42882735
Oh you can fuck right off. It's criteria that's valuable to HIM, retard. And if you don't personally enjoy the process, what is the point in making anything? Attention? Churning out slop faster? Bug brain consoom mindset.
Traditional artists didn't go away because digital exists, nor did digital artists evangelize that any trad artist should just use digital because traditional methods are outdated, or inferior, or slower. They both make what they personally enjoy making, with the methods they want to employ, does that personally offend you?
>>
>>42882833
You sound frustrated. Did I struck a nerve by any chance?

>And if you don't personally enjoy the process
Making a sketch and uploading it here or making a sketch, putting it through img2img and uploading that result here should still allow you to enjoy the same process, just with a slightly nicer looking end result.

>does that personally offend you?
Considering your reaction, AI does seem to have a certain effect on you, no matter how unbiased and fair you may try to sound.

And there we go, you inadvertently called every drawing that was ever posted here "worse looking" if it didn't get fed through the slop machine first. An insult to the very purpose of this general and the anons therein.
Here, have a drawing I made.
>>
>>42882885
I didn't say it's bad looking by default, but you can't deny something like >>42880764 would end up looking a bit nicer if it went through the "slop machine" first. Sounds to me like you just want to be offended. Remember I never said anyone couldn't draw whichever way they want, I'm just wondering why so few people explore other avenues of digital art, including AI. After all, like I said, it's not like you're getting rid of your original process.
>>
>>42882857
>u mad bro?
So you're just baiting, glad we cleared that up.
>>
>>42882898
>Arguments I don't like are bait
If you don't want to use AI for ideological reasons that's fine but at least be honest about it.
>>
>>42882895
Anon... you're raving about "better end results" in a drawing self improvement thread. I sure hope that anon is right and you're baiting, because no one can be this clueless. Genuinely curious how posting an AI-assisted image and asking for critique is gonna help anyone. The end result's quality doesn't matter, it's putting your mistakes out there for the world to see so hopefully someone with experience can point them out to you, or just have fun making and posting it, because YOU made it.
You don't use forklifts to lift weights and then claim you went to the gym.
>>
>>42882923
Well, posting your drawings here to get critique is of course a genuinely worthwhile use of the thread, but remind yourself that this is also the thread to show off "low effort" artwork done by already moderately competent artists. Is AI not low effort enough? ^;) Seriously though, you can still do the same even if you use your sketch as a base for img2img - ask for C&C on the sketch, and then the prompt and other aspects of the post-process you used. Of course, you may just want input on the sketch itself and post the final result in the AI thread and that's fine.

Honestly, I wish there were more competent traditional artists to redline in this thread. We used to have several in the past (or was that the drawthread? It's been so long) and they were the lifeblood of these threads. Not knocking you guys' efforts btw.
>>
>>42883024
nta but that honestly sounds extremely homosexual, I enjoy the whole process, why would I take away from it by simplifying any of the steps
>>
>>42883169
Then don't? Nobody is forcing you to do so, if you really enjoy the process as much as you say. But if you're against simplification then I will assume you keep all of your process traditional?

Ipad Pro with a matte screen protector and a Pencil pro or gen 2. Plus you get a cool Ipad to use when not drawing. Ideally the matte protector is static cling and reapply able.
>>
>>42883478
I have an ipad never use, I guess i should move to ipad. What programs would you recommend for drawing
>>
>>42883489
100% an app called Procreate. Although I had an Ipad too but it didnt support Pencil Gen 2 or Pencil pro. So no pressure sensitivity. I bought the Pencil for it and hated the experience. Although if I bought a matte screen protector it wouldve been better too.

If you wanted to buy Procreate on the app store now and play around in it with your touch thats something you can do now. And you can still ART with it. That's 100% worth it since when you do get an Ipad that supports pressure you will already have it on your apple account.

I have an Ipad Pro Gen 3 512GB which gives me 91 layers in procreate. That's your other limitation, layer count. Not really a /bale/ issue since I have never used more the 4 ever in my life
>>
>>42883445
For a scanner the only realistic choice nowadays is the Canoscan LiDE (either 300 or 400). But it might make more sense to buy a drawing tablet if you want to start working digitally. I got myself one without screen but I never really used it much (and I can't use it all right now for personal reasons). It's one of those really big ones, Wacom Intuos Pro I think. If you do get a large one like that make sure you have enough room on your desktop for it to be able to place it in front of your keyboard and monitor. Not as much of a problem with the smaller ones obviously.

Because traditional art isn’t just about the final image, it’s about authorship, intent, and skill exercised directly by the artist.

Using img2img turns your sketch into training data plus a suggestion, not a finished creative act. At that point the composition, rendering decisions, and even stylistic consistency are being statistically inferred by a model—not consciously chosen by a human. That’s a fundamentally different process, and people are allowed to not want that.

This isn’t about being “brainwashed” or artists being scared of competition. It’s about control and ownership. Traditional artists:

Decide every line, mistake, and correction.

Develop skills that transfer across tools and mediums.

Can explain why something looks the way it does.

Aren’t dependent on a proprietary model, dataset, or server staying online.

AI is a tool—useful for some workflows—but not everyone wants their creative process outsourced. Choosing not to use it doesn’t make someone anti-technology; it means they value the human side of making art.

And let’s be honest: if AI were truly “just another brush,” people wouldn’t get so defensive when artists say “no thanks.”

Artists don’t owe anyone optimization. They owe themselves integrity.

I appreciate AI for bringing the ability to make imagination become reality easier for the masses who have never picked up a pencil but i feel artists should be held to a higher standard since artists know how to make art without these tools. I fear AI will make human art redundant like we have already done for sculpters and other artisans
>>

All I can say in response in your post is to see >>42882735

It's just a tool. Treating it as anything more than that is an ideological (and emotionally charged) argument.

>Aren’t dependent on a proprietary model, dataset, or server staying online.
If you don't generate locally it's like using Photopea instead of Photoshop, of course you're being dependent on another service for your artistic needs then. Also, you can easily make your own LoRAs trained on your own style or even your own checkpoint merge to get closer to what you want, the only limiting factor is the base model itself but at that point it's like complaining about not making your own markers yourself.

You seem to speak from inexperience with the new medium and a desperate holding on to what you are used to and skilled in.

As someone who dabbled in both AI and traditional art, I feel AI art should be held to a much higher standard, since it is so easy to create slop. If you don't even do any inpainting to fix up errors in your work don't even bother publishing it (except when it's a meme or coom I guess, since those are automatically held to a lower standard). I enjoy pictures like >>42884727 despite not being as "polished" as an AI picture, because I can feel the love for ponies emanating from it (you might even call it "sovl").

>redundant like we have already done for sculpters
How has sculpting become redundant? I think most people don't really get into it nowadays because it would seem to me a very serious investment (materials and all), and it also requires you to be highly skilled.
>>
>>42884940
ipadittors are a very common demographic of artist, since its how a lot of people get into digital art. the amount of people using procreate in addition, you shouldnt find any trouble getting the ball rolling. the only things you might get annoyed with is a lack of external control for things like undo, panning, etc, since its all onscreen buttons or gestures.

Okay! Holy FUCK so after my little mspaint sketch I had to warm up I had like, my first serious attempt at making something nice in over a decade, and my first serious go at pony. I wanted to continue the low res mspaint-y thing because it's super fun (this is in Krita now though, still using the mouse tho). I tried to go for a Yoshi's Island art style and scene because I thought it'd fit Ponk really well and I also just love the game and think it's super comfy.

This took me a while but I tend to get really ambitious when I get excited about things, kek. I posted a WIP in a Cytube last night so you guys might remember it from there. And yeah I got carried away and really wanted to do the crayon-y line boil from Yoshi's Island so it's an animation I guess lmao

Aw you guys, thanks!! You have no idea how beyond touched I was to see so many responses, holy fuck. I seriously wanna make more art to share with everyone if you guys like it that much. I poured so much time into that and seeing it be so loved by everyone I've shared it with has meant so much. I'd respond to all of you individually but that'd get a little redundant. I will say it's extremely touching to hear that you guys think it has sovl and feels special, as it kind of feels like I was able to give back to a culture and community I've adored for well over a decade.

As a small bonus thanks to you guys, I've been tinkering with the idea of making one that's good to use as a Cytube emote if you guys ever wanna spam it during a stream or just here as a reaction image, haha. Any tips or ways you'd like to see it done? I was gonna post it here as a surprise once it was finished, but I figured it might be best to get some pointers so I can make something that hits the spot just right for you lads (if you even want something like this jej).

Still chipping away and practicing in the meanwhile. I feel like I have a bit to learn in terms of being fully consistent with my art style, as I notice my look can shift a bit from drawing to drawing at the moment.

Huh, that makes sense, yeah. I noticed trying to pay attention to a "style" to a really insane degree changed up the whole way I was drawing. That first little animation was completely free-spirited with the art style basically boiling down to low res, thick crayon-inspired lines, bright colors and whimsy imagery like rainbows and stars. I'll stick to those things since I love them so much and just try and keep things free-flowing while I continue to slowly feel around for my vibe.

I have a really skilled artist friend who swaps his art style around constantly for fun, and I think I definitely tunnel-visioned in on the idea of having my "thing" I do, haha. All being said, I do really want to master that vibe I had initially, and the style I found resonated with me really deeply, so I'll keep exploring it while keeping things fun.

>I really like that bottom one as an emote.
And oh really? Neat. When animated in a Cytube chat it's a little different 'cuz you can't see the details as closely, so I was thinking about zooming it in more but then you miss the tail bow and stuff.

Just draw anon. Then post it. If I don't get a (You) back with a pony in a couple days, then consider yourself a failure. There's still time! Break out a pen and a piece of computer paper.

I use CaliArts but it's just because what we had on hand, Artistro Acrylic Paint Pens (normal or pastel) are good for finishing touches if you're doing canvas or a canvas board. You can get bulk canvas boards for about $20 or so.

Captcha can't Triforce.

Very pretty and comfy!
I love seeing them in an everyday situation like this! Even if it's not quite every day that they prepare for Heartswarming.

Never heard of it, I'll give it a shot. I've just been on a kick of trying to be more imaginative with my art after having done mostly simple_background figure art for a long while.
Good luck with your Christmas art Anon!

First time drawing ponies, is batpony giving earth pony ride in the air. Any tips to make the earth pony look less like a filly? I can probably figure out hind legs if I think about it in 3d, I kinda just slapped those on. Her hat needs work too.
>>
>>42897072
Fine work anon, very cute. About looking like a filly, it's often a case of body proportions, but in this case it's a matter of size difference. A smaller pone next to a bigger one just gives that impression, you'd have to make their bodies the same size.
And it can be tricky when you have multiple characters together in a scene, to make them all the right size in relation to one another, you just gotta be mentally aware of it and eventually you get a feel for it. It's good that you're already starting with multiple characters though.

Someone hit me with a "show us her pussy" shitpost in response to that Ponka animation I finished so I whipped this up really quick in about a day as a response. Quick and simple meme but it was really fun to make and I hope that person gets a chuckle out of it.

As before, picrel is a HQ gif version of it, though I did make it with the music and it being an mp4 in mind. Enjoy :D

>>42897360
Will add, while I wasn't able to fully capture the cutesy blobby look of my first one again, I did have fun with how it turned out. The line boil animation ended up making it look like she was laughing so I leaned into that a little since it fit super well.

Had a mishap where I accidentally copy-pasted a frame over every other frame without realizing which made me have to import frame 1 from a backup and then redraw the other two kek.

Honestly my game theory as to the reason /bale/ is in some weird bump purgatory and sliding off the catalogue really quickly has been because it's the holidays and not a lot of people wanna dedicate an hour or two to making a drawing when they might be having to spend time with family. The rest of the board is likely going a little fast because of time off from work and people stopping in to visit real quick for Hearth's Warming or whatever. It might not be that but I think a lot of people simultaneously have a lot of free time but also have said free time occupied with a ton of other stuff. Just scroll up and look how many art posts the 23rd had in comparison to the 24th and today haha.

Thanks! Yeah it was a quick one I did in a day but I had a lot of fun with it. Gonna make another one at some point. Just doing little practice Ponka face sketches in the meantime to keep sharp, nothing worth sharing though (yet).

how would you go about learning to draw appealing faces if you had to start from the beginning? bodies I can break down fine but faces are alien to me, I have a lot of time to grind them now but I don't wanna waste it so I'd appreciate some pointers on what worked for you

>>42902925
we all look like this irl c'mon
>>42903493
First I'd look at drawings that have faces that I feel are appealing. Then I'd try and study those faces, how are the proportions, the size of the eyes/ears/nose etc. Then when I felt kinda sure of what I like I'd just get to drawing many different faces/heads with the knowledge I got from the studies. Ponies do have a certain formula with big eyes, mediumish ears and tiny noses to get that cute look but you can also modify em a bit.

>>Rotated on side
In case someone doesn't know, this happens because cameras put the camera rotation in the EXIF data and 4chan strips this information from uploaded JPEGs. If you want to give the image the correct orientation when it's uploaded, you can strip the EXIF data yourself and rotate the image losslessly with jpegtran. Use the command line "jpegtran -copy none -rotate [90 | 180 | 270] -trim -outfile <your_output_file.jpg> <your_input_file.jpg>". Use the command without the -rotate switch first so you know which (if any) rotation you need to apply. The -trim command is used to remove pixels that become noise if the image size doesn't end on an MCU boundary (usually 16).
