ITT: Retardkino. That is, episodes that are legit funny and enjoyable if you forget you're not retarded for 20 minutes.Kicking off with a real doozy, Fake It Till You Make It. Based episode, but only if you channel your inner retard for the entire episode.
Most episodes after season 2 qualify for this.
Slice of Life is the epitome of 'don't think about it'. It's an ill-timed love letter to the fandom. I hate it as an episode of Friendship is Magic, but I acknowledge what they were trying to do.
If you just ignore the fact that Bats! has a complete nonsense plot, the Flutterbat stuff is pretty fun.
>>42853572I've come to enjoy its song since I embraced my disdain for Fluttershy.
>>42853548The entirety of Kino Life
>>42853584Yea Fluttershy is pretty shit in anything past season 1. I think she really was probably the most poorly handled character.
>>42853548rarity takes manehattan. suri is kekworthy and the retarded coco ending isn't bad if you don't think about it.
>>42853630Season 4 in general feels like you're just not meant to think about it. Alicorn laser battles? Don't think about it! Daring Do is real? Don't worry about it! Weird Al's a pony who's basically a better Pinkie Pie and the show does a mixed media gag for the first time? Don't worry about it! It is, as the kids say, aura.
>>42853630It's genuinely not a bad Rari episode if you divorce her arc from all the shitty modern set dressing.
>>42853640the pacing is all over the place and the ending is half baked and devalues the message of the episode greatly.
I don't give a fuck about "the writers are making fun of muh fandom reee" but I liked Fame and Misfortune. Retarded ep but the song is kino tho.
>>42853650>the song is kino thoI don't remember if this is speculative or confirmed but people talked about it being written for an entirely different context and just getting slotted into that episode.
>>42853645 (me)as cute as she is, cutting coco out of the episode would improve it. no retarded "rarity wins anyways lol" ending that makes the lesson pointless, and it gives more time for the plot to breathe. have it end in the hotel lobby with rarity not caring about losing and reconciling with her friends and it's significantly more sound of an episode.
>>42853666Yeah, too many episodes aren't willing to have the ponies in question lose something in the process of figuring out who they are. I get why they didn't do it but Wonderbolt Academy would be a way better episode if Rainbow Dash wasn't rewarded for quitting, it would've made her whole arc more interesting and it would be a better lesson since many institutions won't care about your principles.
>>42853666Not entirely wrong, Satan. However, I think Coco betraying her slavemaster underlines the point that friendship always ought to override material concerns, which is what Rarity learns after trying to abuse her friendship for the sake of winning. I agree that it would've worked better if Rarity didn't win everything.
>>42853666>>42853645Yea Rarity winning at the end kinda ruins the premise a bit. Nothing ultimately matters because she gets the best of both worlds regardless. Imagine if at the end of TLR AJ gets a bunch of money and the ribbons anyway because it turns out she actually won every even on a technicality. It completely diminishes the rest of the episode and the moral, but that's exactly how it feels like every Rarity episode plays out.
>>42853702There's precedent set for this in the S2 episode where she dodges Twilight's birthday party and gets away with it through sheer coincidence and Fancy Pants' providence. Rarepone is the queen of failing upwards, closely followed by Trixie. I see the whole show as a comic farce, so I'm always up to see a mare winning in spite of all logic.
>>42853553Canterlot wedding is that exact thing too.
>>42853699i don't feel the underlining is necessary. rarity's realization is more than enough to get the point across.
>>42853653No, Larson said what you saw was what he wrote for that episode specifically. He didn't like the premise of the episode either, but he wrote for it anyways. He had plans for a differently structured episode, but I believe hasbro said no write this instead.
>>42853718I'm talking about the song specifically, but I'll trust you.
>>42853699>>42853690>>42853702>>42853710At this point I think AJ was pretty much the only pony that actually did have to lose things and make sacrifices in her episodes in pursuit of character growth. The Last Roundup, Bats, even Applebuck Season have the lesson of her learning she isn't as capable as she wants to be.Side note, I always love how in Fluttershy Leans In, she berates everyone for trying to give her advice on what she should do when animals are her specialty and not theirs, but that's exactly what she was doing to Applejack in Bats and the irony was completely lost on the writers. But yea, every character not named Applejack either wins regardless of what happens or only loses by being dragged down by other ponies(see Rainbow Falls).
>>42853726I think this is partially responsible for the AJ is a background pony meme. She isn't given main character plot armor.
>>42853726If it makes you feel better, you're free to ignore The Last Roundup as an out-of-season non-canon episode. I mean, it's not like Applejack would run away from home and desert her whole family over something as transient as a rodeo win, right? Surely, even despite how she's expected to bring some money home, she'd value honesty and family over anything else, especially anything material, right? Right?!
>>42853723Oh, right. That makes more sense. I don't think that's how the production of the show is structured either, not sure if Ingram is making a bunch of songs and Hasbro is just like "eh we'll put that there". Larson explained his position on the episode in this videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qKgav9k_u0
>>42853734Yea. At this point I unironically think she was just actually the best written, but normeis can't appreciate subtle writing or actual growth, so they just brushed her off.
>>42853740Well when the rest of her friends are perfect and amazing at what they do and she's the only one who actually has to live with failure, I imagine it's a bit hard for her to not feel like she can't come back without everyone considering her a failure. This episode and others make it pretty clear she doesn't have the best self-esteem and thinks everyone will hate her if she's anything less than perfect, but no ones ever seems to consider that AJ has issues to for some reason.
>>42853746>>42853753Her being a US Southerner stereotype limited the pity or relatability for a lot of people. Burgers from outside the south view Southerners as lesser and unimportant, that probably translated into the mlp fandom as well.
>>42853548This actually just means you may be too retarded to understand the 1 thing that would let you enjoy it fully, and not just for 20minutes.I remember when I used to hate various things in media because of some technicalities that made me think I was smarter than the person who created it, and its audience. Then I realized the person who created it often knows full well what those flaws are, and still chooses to make it anyway, often even owning up to those flaws in a humorous way that went over my head, and I wasn't half as clever as I thought I was.Let that sink in.
>>42853884I used to believe Haber didn't have time to post on /mlp/, but now I know better.
>>42853753Its kinda fucking crazy when you think about it. Dash can fly fast anywhere and helped them all get their CM’s by performing a new feat of pegasi physics and aerodynamics. Twilight is a magical Mary Sue. Rarity gets endless praise for clothes that ponies wear once a month at best and she gets to act as vain and superficial as she possibly can. Pinkie Pie just gets to act like a hyperactive 9 year old 24/7 and Fluttershys job is babysitting small animals. Meanwhile you have to kick trees on a daily basis, because your granny is past her prime, your little sister is useless and your big brother tills the fields. If you dont do this then you fucking starve or go broke. You are cursed for eternity.
>>42854056>Fluttershys job is babysitting small animalsThere's Harry the Bear, to be fair.
>>42854056Applejack also ends up as a genetic failure because the writers made her gay, meaning Sweet Apple Acres won't be passed down to her children since she won't be having any. After she gets past her prime, the Rich family will collect on the farm, and her family's legacy will just be a footnote on the back of a battle of mass-produced apple cider. The absolute best-case scenario is Big Mac breeding and Apple Bloom coming back with a degree in business and the two of them running the farm, but such a possibility is incredibly unlikely since Applejack is the premier child of the three, and she's still a genetic fuck-up.
>>42854164It's really sad the writers do that but then also directly state that RD doesn't actually help with the chores. She's also away from home all the time due to her job, and even that g5 comic where they wanted to tease it more still had her saying that she lived in Cloudsdale as well. So apparently AJ is in a relationship with someone who's never home, lives in a different city at least half the time, and doesn't even actually do any work when she is there.I've yet to see any Appledash fag give any justification for HOW this relationship is supposed to work out long term or how AJ could possibly be happy in a relationship like this beyond them just being madly in love for no reason and nothing being able to effect that.I guess it makes an ideal relationship for RD, since she apparently gets all the benefits but with no actual obligations or responsibilities, but it's a pretty raw deal for Applejack. She puts in all the work and effort and all she gets is occasionally sharing her bed with someone every once in a while. It's so loveless and soul crushing that I imagine everyone who ships it just has to be self inserting as Dash. Because as far as canon goes AJ really doesn't get much here.
Who do you think is the best ship for applejack then?
>>42854239Of the mane 6? Either Twilight or Pinkie Pie.
>>42854262Pinkie is a good pick, presuming you ignore the version of her from her worst episodes. She's a very caring and thoughtful pony behind the facade she puts up, and extremely talented too. It is a little funny to think about her leaving her family farm to end up on another farm as well.I wasn't meaning to restrict her to just the mane 6 though. There aren't many named stallion characters for her to choose from though, and if she's going to go gay, she's going to marry one of the mane 6.
>>42854164Big Mac and Sugar Belle have a son in the finale.
>>42854280Yea there's not very many notable named stallions to choose from, and half of the ones there are are related to her.Obviously though the best ship is always [Insert pony of choice here] X Anon. Only true OTP.
>>42854262The writers were too cowardly to introduce more stallion romances for the Mane 6 after the backlash to Flash Sentry for Twilight. Pinkie Pie got Cheese Sandwich because no one can hate Weird Al, naturally. I genuinely believe Rarity was being set up with Fancy Pants, and Rainbow Dash had both Soarin and Thunderlane. I remain confident that if the (at the time, entirely justifiable) vitriol for Equestria Girls didn't exist, Fluttershy and AJ would've had stallions that showed up in their lives too. But, nah, everypony's fuckin' gay.
>>42854301>I genuinely believe Rarity was being set up with Fancy PantsThat would've been bold, I don't think I've seen a cartoon where a main character steals a man.
>>42854301If the romance options for the others were going to be as bad as Flash Sentry, I'm glad they nixed them.
>>42854262Those faces are fucking awful
>>42854309The Trans-Atlantic accent makes people forget that Rarity is Midwest white trash trying to break into the upper crust in any way possible. But, maybe that relationship would've been "too real" for audiences?
>>42854324Yeah, I think that would've been a risky one. I wouldn't have minded seeing it but I think even among non-waifufags that would've really hurt Rarity's widespread appeal.
>>42854329Rarity getting a Pretty Woman ending would've been kino, but I can't change the reality she grew up into a used-up dried-out gray-haired mule who died alone and her corpse was discovered three days later, partially devoured by the numerous cats she purchased after Opal died.
>>42854239Boba Fett
>>42854335Okay, what's the chemistry? Does Boba's singleminded focus let him crack through AJ's hardened heart? Or does she fall madly in love with him after he saves her from a monster attack using his kelvarek wrist rockets?
>>42854322I had to stop watching some Applejack-centered episode because they constantly had her doing faces like that. Welcome to the late seasons, anon!
>>42854341That's a pony.mov face, you can't fool me.
>>42854239>>42854280>>42854335>>42854339If we do non-MLP characters, then I have one I think would be a great fit. Tack from The Thief and The Cobbler. I feel like that's exactly the type AJ could go for. He's kinda quiet and withdrawn, but he's hardworking, humble, brave, and not a very dishonest person.I know this is a weird pull, and probably the only reason I thought of this is because I'm actually watching this movie on yourube right now, lol.
>>42854339Bounty hunter vs impromptu monster hunter turned lovers, maybe? I'm sure she'd like to hear about his time as Mand'alore during the Vong invasion.
>>42854301I unironically believe this influenced the SugarMac decision too. They didn't want to step on Cheerileefag or Marblefag toes so they paired him with a mare no one gave a shit about.
>>42854349Crack pick, but I can see it. Any crossover pick is going to be a bit out there anyways.I suppose I should throw my own crossover ship into the ring. I think she'd have strong chemistry with Sabin from Final Fantasy 6. He has the sort of honor, loyalty, and selflessness she'd admire. Edgar might work well too on surface level examination, but he's a liar.
>>42853548Flutterbitch is extremely hot and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.
>>42854413She is, but she's hotter in "Putting Your Hoof Down". I'd like to see her get good at turning that mindset on and off at will instead of letting herself get caught up in it.
>>42853726Somebody edit it>Background Pony Award>Dead Parents Awardetc
>>42854317>If the romance options for the others were going to be as bad as Flash Sentry, I'm glad they nixed them.
>>42854413I want to kancho her pussy while she's wearing that suit
>>42854574That's mean. She deserves to be treated nicer, Applejack's a good pony with a tender soul.
>>42854587True, however it would be funny
>>42854574Because you asked nicely.
>>42854607Live by the award, die by the award
>>42854580kek
>>42854324Lower-Classity is so fucking kino. Rarity will NEVER escape her trash background; she will forever ever be poor, neurotic, and struggling.
>>42853563>ill-timedhow's 100th episode "ill-timed"?>and the show does a mixed media gag for the first time?A friend in deed had stop motion
>>42854583>not her ponut
>>42853745>not sure if Ingram is making a bunch of songs and Hasbro is just like "eh we'll put that there".Mister /mlp/ 2025 once had his song moved to a different episode (Pinkie's "oink oink oink" from best night ever to baby cakes)
>>42854374wasn't Sugar Belle some writer's pet?
>>42854589Hatless Applejack reminds me of pic rel
>>42855212This board is for ponies. Try to stay on topic.
>>42855471TF2 is a brony game
Secrets and PiesThe Maud CoupleThey're objectively absolutely fucking retarded but still funny to me for some reason
>>42855475Secrets and Pies is just genuinely good though
>>42855479This. People hate it for being too cartoony... It's a fucking cartoon, guys. Pinkie is wacky, it's kinda her thing.
>>42855474Cringe
>>42855481>Pinkie is wacky, it's kinda her thing.being wacky doesn't mean she's a fucking retardmain difference between early season and late season Pinkie is her being unironically retarded in later episodes of the show
>>42855507How was she retarded?Dash was literally gaslighting her like a glownigger the whole episode
>>42855510said gaslight would've worked if Pinkie was mentally challenged with 60 IQand she's not supposed to be this retardedlike really, the episode could've been about Pinkie trying to indirectly force Rainbow into revealing her open secret (with some pretty good message in the end), but instead they just Ponk retarded
>>42855513>Ponk retardedmade Ponk retarded
>>42855513>said gaslight would've worked if Pinkie was mentally challenged with 60 IQ???Did forget she was abusing her speed to do so and the first reasonable time Pinkie could've noticed was what prompted the entire conflict? Dash can do things literally in the blink of an eye as proven in the episode.
>>42855517idk they spent a significant chunk of the episode showing exceptionally obvious clues that point to Rainbow throwing her pies away that make the whole "need to see it myself" plot point pointless (pun intended)like really, why couldn't Pinkie "surprise" Rainbow with A-flavored pie that was actually B? Wouldn't this resolve Pinkie's suspicion?
>>42855527Pinkie didn't want to believe that Dash was doing it. Did you even watch the episode? She tries to find excuses for Dash before accepting that she was tossing the pies.
>>42855544>Did you even watch the episode?yeah and I thought of it as being ass so never rewatched itI just don't like seeing Ponk being mentally challenged man
>>42855555funny digit check
>>42855551Her actions in the episode are in character. She didn't want to believe that Dash was being an asshole.
>>42853548The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows is the biggest nothing burger, but has several funny interactions
>>42855567I love Mayor Mare torment. I didn't realize this until recently when upon watching Magic Duel again I enjoyed seeing her in the oversized bird cage in Trixie's conquered Ponyville. Pinkie Pie plugging her mouth is amazing. Don't let Mayor Mare speak.
>>42855510Telling a lie isn't gaslighting ffs. Stop calling everything gaslighting to make it sound worse.
Pinkie has a party planning cave.
>>42854324White trash seems a bit hyperbolic. Though it's hard to place where ponyville is because it's themed after a medieval village at times, and has some modern fixtures like a bowling alley or has sugarcube corner which is a girl's play set. Her family is definitely low-to-mid class. I rather like to think of it from Royalty to Villager but introduction of real life analogues make things harder.
>>42856004I'd say her parents seem definitely middle class. She's been at Carousel Boutique since she was a filly, so they evidently had enough money to own the building, but they're still far off from the upper class nobility Rarity aspires to.
bump
>>42854574either i've been on 4chan too long and am slowly becoming one of those schizophrenics that every board seems to have a small population of or those basedjack faggots are actually creeping onto this board more and moreI've seen multiple posts with "thoughbeit" and whatever other dumbass terms they use and have never seen anyone else notice it
>>42856831Talking about it gets posts deleted, unfortunately. But yeah, a lot of the spam as of late has been them, and a decent number of regular posters are from there too. It is what it is.
