I wish MLP had introduced the concept of Unicorns (the original species, as distinct from Unicorn Ponies who came later as a result of Unicorns crossbreeding with Earth Ponies).
Unicorns and Horses went extinct/nearly extinct because they were much more solitary than Ponies. They were far stronger and more impressive than their Pony counterparts, easily besting them in many things. But the Ponies out-competed them in cooperation and teamwork, and this was the Unicorn's undoing. They weren't defeated in battle or anything like that. The Unicorns just slowly went extinct out of apathy and lack of an interest in close-knit social groups.They had the magic but not the friendship. This is why they failed.
