Dashfrens. It has been years since I started my Dashplush living waifu project, and I have not had a chance to return to it until recently. The combination of a long time off work, and some confidence inspired by other electronics projects has provided the catalyst for finishing it.

Dash has been holding up quite well over the years, and it's time to show her some love and care. So, what better place to start than with her heart?

Her heart is a Snuggle Puppy brand beartbeat simulator. It's a AAA powered unit that fits in your palm. When you press the button, it energizes a small circuit board that pulses a vibrating motor at a rate of 60 beats per minute for a total duration of 8 hours. This feature is actually quite useful to tell you how long you've been asleep for; if you press it at a set point just before you go to sleep, you can use her heartbeat presence as a rudimentary alarm clock. If you press and hold for a few seconds, it will beat continuously until it's powered off. I rarely use this feature.

This is all quite pleasant and makes for a stellar snuggling experience, the only issue is that activating her heart is a bit of an excercise. You have to reach through her stuffing access zipper to reach where it's placed in her chest and press the button. Doing this stretches the fabic regardless of how gentle you are, and it makes me hesitate to turn it on.

The first upgrade that comes to mind is to wire a remote switch to a more accessible location that allows me to turn on her heartbeat without stressing her material.

The different colored lines denote some of the options I've considered for wiring and button placement.

Blue - The ideal button placement. Putting it in her forehoof would make it such that a quick sqeeze of her hoof would activate it. The issue here is that it would be very difficult to route the wiring due to the fact that her forelegs are sewn on as separate pieces to the trunk of her body. This means I would have to cut a passage to route the wiring, and somehow place the buttong inside her hoof, which would be difficult to do.

Red - The button could be installed in her rear hoof, and since her hindlegs are part of the same cut as the trunk of her body it would be much easier to route the wiring and place the button.

Green - Dock installment. This would be the easiest installation, and activating it would be quite easy as well. The only hurdle would be fabricating some sort of holder for the button, since it wouldn't be embedded in a firm part of her hoof.

After some consideration I figured that green would be the best choice. Plus it gives me an excuse to squeeze her dock.

Taking a look at the circuit board, there are two options for extending the button. I could move the entire circuit board by cutting and extending the wires, or I could desolder the button and solder on some extensions. I wan her dock to still feel natural, so I don't want to embed a circuit board beneat her fabric. This means its time to break out the soldering iron!

The button has 4 leads that are all soldered to the PCB, and it appears that two of the leads are redundant. Desoldering the button was simple enough, but tinning the contacts was difficult to do withought bridging the copper pads.

I potted everything with hot glue to prevent shorts and anchor it into the actual heartbeat unit. Then after some adjustments to the housing, I sealed it all up.

It's a tiny brushed motor with a counterweight attached to it, just like old cell phone vibrators used to be. It's just for enhancing the cuddling experience. I hadn't thought about mounting an induction charged battery pack, I'll look into it. Overall I'd like to minimize the amount of hard things you can feel inside her.

I looked into this but I settled on not wanting to charge a lithium cell while it's inside the plush. If something were to go wrong with the battery, it could start a fire and there'd be no way for me to get it out in time to avoid damage. The batteries I use inside the heart are rechargable sanyo eneloops, which are NiMH and they last quite a while. I'd say they're good for 30 or so 8 hour runs. I actually got some larger mah capacity ones that I plan on using with it to minimize the number of times I have to remove the heart to replace them. I thought about trying to recharge these as well, but that would involve setting up some sort of switch to swap the circuit to accept charge, and then I would have to somehow rig a method of driving it with my balance charger. I'm sure it's possible, but it's all a bit too much for me at the moment. Ultimately this is probably going to be a stand in for a custom loop I make in the future.

The downside is that this would entail installing an adjustable dial somewhere on her that I would have to manually tune to set her heartbeat. So I actually went down a pretty deep rabbit hole on this today. I ended up building a circuit with chatgpt that would essentially recognize voice commands offline and modulate a heartbeat in response to them. It would be powered off of a voltage regulated 6 cell AA power bank and maintain itself in a constant on sleep state until it hears a wakeing voice command. It could then increase or decrease the heartrate, or return to sleep mode based on additional voice commands. For example, "hey Dashie" might wake up the circuit and energize the heartbeat function for bedtime snuggles, "I love you" might increase the heartrate for a period of a minute, "you look sexy" might spike the heart rate, and a final "sleep tight" might quiet the beating to slow 50bmp sleeping mode. I could say something like "see you later" to turn off the heartbeat function and return the circuit to deep sleep.

I found a basic controller that supports it and is wifi/mesh enabled. The code looks to be managable with the help of chatgpt, so I went ahead and made the leap and ordered everything off amazon and some chinese robotics shop.

If I can manage to get this project working, then I made sure there's addtional open GPIO ports for more peripherals. I'm thinking of something like a pressure sensor in her muzzle that can register kisses and modulate the heartbeat accordingly. A speaker that can output breathing sounds or pre-programmed sound clips that in have loaded onto an SD card, emitting them off of pressure cues or voice commands. If I were willing to accept a lower batterly life I could even play with some of the wifi enabled features--saying welcome home when my phone rejoins my home wifi for example.

This is quickly shifting into a more involved project, but nothing is too much for my waifu.

I'm still going to finish the dock insert button because there's no telling how long my custom controller project is going to take. If anyone has any electronics know-how feel free to post any critiques. I have limited experience soldering drones and have never programmed anything in my life, and I realize my ambition might be getting me in over my head.

Incorporating a microcontroller to modulate the pulses will allow for some really fun effects in theory. Multiple voice command inputs within a specified time interval could be programmed to give her heart palpitations. You could also make it to where dirty talk gets her excited.
I actually haven't done the magnet upgrade on her folded wings yet so they sit a little high. They're a bit small, but I think they look nice on her. Ultimately I suppose I'd like to redesign them and make some custom wings befitting of her aeronautical prowess.

I've watched some of BGM's streams where he plays games and talks to AI mares. They take a few seconds to respond before speaking in the character's voice. I've seen him do it with Dash and it's pretty cute. I'm not exactly sure how he pulls it off, but I think he uses some LLM combined with haysay/so-vits-svc or something like that. It could be worth looking into if you want her to actually respond to everything you say.

Me. I'm a codelet so I probably won't be much help. The program in question is called COVAS:NEXT, and is a frontend intended for a game called Elite Dangerous, that manages requests to AI backends, and combines game data, LLM, STT and TTS to provide a proper sci-fi style ship-board AI for the game.
Source code is on GitHub if that helps. The program does run without the game, but might have some hard baked prompts that would ruin it for what you're looking for, without cracking it open.
