Is there an in-universe reason that the ponies build their seats of power on the sides of mountains?

>>42890215None that's given. I think it's just the unicorns that do that. Their original kingdom seemed to be mountainous, they had magic to do the heavy lifting, and the filthy mud ponies were handling all the food anyway, so they didn't need to worry about logistics. Why not build an awesome mountain fortress? Canterlot was likely Equestria's "unicorn city" in honor of the tradition before Celestia moved there and made it the capital.
