Has anyone ever done a story swap outside of Jinglemas or Summer Sin? I got solicited for one and I'm on the fence about it.
>no mention of Starscribe getting caught using an LLM in the first fucking sentence of his latest chapterBoo, that was funny.I've managed to write about eight hundred words so far this year, including a delightfully silly entry to Flashfic. I'm pretty pleased with myself. I know we're only three and some days into the year, but how are you faring?

Every once in a while I see a fic that seems like it was written by a child and I find it heartwarming. They're almost always terrible though
I lived. For now. Sucks I missed the SnW anniversary stream.
>bookclub post at 3500 charsThis is the worst feeling. It's not enough to split it in half, imo, but cutting out 15% of the words is hard.
E-rated mega-incest in,>/FSBC/A very old fic. It's not written too poorly if you can overlook the peculiarities of the age—I'm talking about the styling (CAPITAL LETTERS) and the style (mother of all LUS!). And if that, in addition to the S1-like style of the narration, didn't tip you off, then you get a blunt Dangerous Business reference early in the first chapter, because of course the writer had to pay his respects. Dangerous Business! I'd bet I'll be among the last 5 people in the world to ever spot it here.To talk about the story, I was a bit surprised at first, as even though the premise didn't especially speak to me, I quickly started to like it! The story is just... good? What? It has a few stumbles, but usually in the small things. Like, talking about sex isn't something for E. It's not too egregious here. But the rest of the fic's atmosphere is delightfully show-like. The most significant accusation I can raise against the story is that it sometimes suffers from the characters being possessed by the author to speak or do things that he wants them to speak to move the fic forward. Even that, however, is mild, and the pacing of the story, while on the slower side, has felt very appropriate so far. And for a 2011 fic, that's an almost unattainable level of mastery. I should simply say that it's been a very pleasant read overall. Yes, part of it is that it's an oldfic that doesn't suck, so overlooking the "early ficness" of it comes easier, but I think it stands without its context, too. I'd love for 2026 fics to be as good as this.Several show quotes are woven into character speech. I don't mind it here, really—the people who would be upset by this wouldn't recognize them. It's a little cheap to use those as a characterization crutch, but it's excusable in a show-like fic. Less excusable is quoting 2010 memes for almost five lines straight. Yes, we all know the Double Rainbow joke. Everyone else made it first, my guy. Even the 2026 readers would be familiar with it, I think. Reference humor is, thankfully, not too common here.Among the so many "early fandom" things this fic commits, involving the whole Mane6 in the plot stands out. Somehow, it's done well! Pinkie hasn't played a part yet, but everypony else has been given an impressively nicely balanced amount of spotlight. A few parts overly draw attention to it by introducing problems specific ponies are best at solving, but the way the story has handled its cast is easily better than in 95%+ of M6 fics on the site, on top of having six more to manage. It really ought to be said that the characterizations are great! Even Spike and the CMCs! Rarity is amazing here and unquestionably 100% right here, btw. Are Rarity+Rarigay the heroes of the story? Maybe. It can still easily fuck up in the second week by fumbling the resolution of the plot, but the fic has greatly exceeded my expectations and is on track to claim the prestigious and ever-so-elusive title of oldfic kino.
>>42927747>>A copy editor with 20 years industry experiencelol, what even is this prompt? Toss in a "don't hallucinate" while you're at it, Starscribe.
>>42928317I have most of the same positive things to say about the fic that you do. My biggest gripe with the fic is that a lot of the plot is driven by emotions and uncritical thinking to a degree which lacks believability for me for their respective ponies. It’s harder to be invested in a story when it is driven by the impulsiveness of characters that you think you have a justifiable reason to believe should have a greater degree of self control and contextual awareness. The story is more enjoyable if you turn your brain off and not think about how almost everything could have been sidestepped if they just talked to twilights male counter part first thing.
>>42928317I found myself easily engaged, too. This is what I want out of an oldfic. Soul? Soul. The author really cared, and it shows.Twilight botching a spell and kicking off the plot became sort of a meme because of how commonplace it was once upon a time, so it's nice to see it again. Is it weird for Twilight not to be thorough in analysing what a spell can do? Yes, but canon backs it up.The rest of the cast also shines. I think the fic balances everypony quite well. We didn't get to see what Pinkie and Berry will be up to, but it feels quite balanced. They all have their moments, and even some Pinkie moments were quite fun. To a degree, I think the LUS is kind of funny because it's used to refer both the regular and R63 versions of the characters. Is this the fic that cemented those names as the accepted R63 names for the main cast? I know there were some others very early on, but I can't think of any fic that did something different with them.>we all know the Double Rainbow jokeWe do! And I actually sort of liked the inclusion. It's horribly dated, but in a way, it reinforces the zeitgeist in which this was written. It just made me feel I was back in the first half of '12, reading fics on this new site I'd found for this new show I really liked.>Are Rarity+Rarigay the heroes of the story?Narcissism is a universal force.>>42928470>characters that you think you have a justifiable reason to believe should have a greater degree of self control and contextual awarenessAJ and Fluttershy should have definitely known better.Dash is really dumb, though. And as stated above, the structural integrity of the multiverse is of no concern to Rarity's unstoppable narcissism.
>>42928470>to a degree which lacks believability for me for their respective poniesI know that I'm way more likely to excuse that than most people, but even so I don't think it's too bad for when this was written. Twilight is being paranoid for a good reason, which is entirely in character. So are RD and Rarity. Ponk didn't do anything yet. AJ is usually better than this, but being a very silly pony when she's stubborn and prideful is also a key trait of early AJ. And as for FS, well, this is really the only one where I'd have to concede the point, but she's completely smitten, which excuses a lot.>if they just talked to twilights male counter part first thing.Yeah, but Twilight is panicking too much to allow that.>>42928500>This is what I want out of an oldfic. Soul? Soul.Yep, 2026 is starting well. It's not yet to the level of something like Twice as Bright for me, but as far as oldfics go, it'd place very high.>They all have their moments,This fic figured it out in mid-2011, only for ponyfics to struggle with it for the next 3-5 years.>Is this the fic that cemented those namesI /think/ it is, but I am not completely sure. This was before my time, and while I've seen a few anons claim that this is the source, anons have been wrong before.>It's horribly dated,No u.>Narcissism is a universal force.I am only slightly joking in saying they're right. Is it really narcissism? I mean, you could spin it that way, sure, but if the multiverse couldn't handle something this good, then perhaps it'd be better for universe to collapse, rather than deny them. Twilight's the real villain. We're doing the movie plot six years early.>AJ and Fluttershy should have definitely known better.Apple-"bets her entire farm for no gain because of her pride"-jack, really?
>>42928500Rarity felling in love with a gender swapped version of herself is somewhat believable. Flutters not so much. Also the way magic is portrayed in this fic is something I haven’t seen in a while. it’s charmingly simple. >Wanna go to another dimension? nigga throw some shit in a vase and set yourself to wumbo! This stands in contrast to other fics I have read which try to flesh out a whole rationality consistent hard magic system or make spell casting operate like programming.
new slop just dropped https://www.fimfiction.net/story/586493/2/rise-of-the-new-world-order/new-beginningI love when there's such a blatantly clear divide between the clean-but-repetitive machine text and the bits of clumsy ESLslop as the mortar between the bricks.
>>42928658Ah yes, the Nazis. Famous for being good at winning wars.
>>42928658I admit I find it funny that the human's pronouns are he/it.
>>42928658>>42928678The pent-up frustration is almost palpable.
>>42928658Hell, yeah.
>>42928678The Nazi were actually decently good at war, they were just really stupid in picking which wars they decided to commit to. In a universe where Hitler isn't a drugged up schizo on an ideologically funded crusade "Germany conquers a huge chunk of Europe and allies with the rest" isn't too far out of the question. They were never winning a World War because good luck ever touching the US, and invading Russia is suicide, and they probably couldn't take the UK either, but they did have a good track record when they weren't doing things that are stupid on principle. Although, to be fair, at that point it's no longer Nazism, the need to go out and conquer and purge their enemies was always core to the ideology.
>>42928555>bets her entire farm for no gain because of her prideThat was all Granny Smith and Apple Bloom's doing. AJ was really nervous when the bet was being made. You're better off using Applebuck Season as an example given when this fic was written.
>>42928658>Discord sends the human to the EaW setting to spread more chaos through warBut in that setting Discord finds war to be "the most boring form of chaos" and it's why he doesn't show up in it at all. Really flying in the face of the AU canon here
>>42928317Well I went to bed 3 hours before club so i'm later than usualRight off the bat I figured the ideal outcome was they all got the hots for each other and then went back and realized they still did. But what happens is everyone just wants to fuck themselves with the exception of maybe the most obvious one. That said I was doubtful going into it, but the fic is a fun read. It definitely shows its age, but in a fine way. The only thing I don't really like is Gayquestria saying 'brony' so much and also a bunch of human words (I recall gentleman specifically). There's also an actually funny amount of LUS. And I'm surprised they never went to zecora for help, she definitely would've understood and been less of a risk than the fucking CMC lmao>R63 twilight can't even comprehend how much magic twilight just usedMares are just better>one of the first ponies they notice is a new and improved dr.whooves>"Ah don't trust Pinkie."Kek. If you don't like AJ having a written accent, you might have a bad time with this>losing 23 consecutive matches of tic-tac-toeHoly KEK also 'toe'???>Fluttershy is the camouflage agentkek, the CMC being in on it was an interesting dynamic. Also very slight kino that Sweetie bro knocked Rarity to her senses about staying in this world masturbating for the rest of her life while Sweetie Belle is still in Equestria. Also I imagine at some point Twilight and the M6 are gonna see the Princes and then it's over for them>>42928317>I was a bit surprised at first, as even though the premise didn't especially speak to me, I quickly started to like it! The story is just... good? What?kek, it really is. I read it all at once and then we stoppe4d at the turning point lol I just wanted to keep going>sexI'm just glad it was specifically 'sexual intercourse'>I'd love for 2026 fics to be as good as this.lmao>Reference humor is, thankfully, not too common hereYeah the dub rainbow was bad, but thankfully there isn't an abundance of references. That's probably what I liked least about the Cherilee fic. What even is the point of going 'hey readers, do you know this song? How cool is this! Cherilee loves that song!' like wtf>It really ought to be said that the characterizations are great! Even Spike and the CMCs!Yeah, really nice so far.>Are Rarity+Rarigay the heroes of the story? No but by now she's probably developed a fetish for masturbating in front of a mirror>>42928470Ehh I think it's fine for the characters to be doing what they're doing. Fluttershy was a good choice at first but she literally ran into her counterpart and is too nice to literally just run away after bumping somepony elseAJ was fine in playing out her situation and she did a good job of it and bugged out when RD did something dumb as fuck which is expected. And Rarity would of course get jealous and want to fuck herself lmao but yes by now it should be obvious it's twilight's turn, and that's exactly what the fic showed us she's thinking about
>>42928406It's how AI "prompt engineers" think, even though it doesn't make the AI somehow better.
>>42928500>This is what I want out of an oldfic.Absolutely, not only nostalgia, but a good fic as well>Dash is really dumb, though. And as stated above, the structural integrity of the multiverse is of no concern to Rarity's unstoppable narcissism.fucking kek>>42928555>And as for FS, well, this is really the only one where I'd have to concede the pointNah, it's not like she saw herself and went over to introduce herself. She is just to shy and nice to properly remove herself from the interaction quickly. Unless both of you are talking about Butterscotch being OOc in holding the conversation with her, then I guess maybe I can see thatAlso I forgot what Spike's name is but6 I thought it was supposed to be Barb
>>42928903>and then went back and realized they still didThe fic is a sanctuary permitting straight relationships in the cold, uncaring, world of Equestria and it's mareshipping. Well, aside from Rainbow Dyke somehow still managing. I was making fun of this in the opening line, but this being definitely incest from a genetics standpoint complicates things somewhat.>the fic is a fun readYeah, I've had it on my RIL for 6 years due to its significance in the fandom and until recently I never even considered bringing it up.>Gayquestria saying 'brony' There's a bunch of suboptimal pony vocabulary choices, but this was written so early that these things weren't really decided upon yet, which makes me tolerate all the "bronies" more.>Holy KEK also 'toe'???There's another "patting herself on the back", "men's" and "girl's" fabric piles, etc. Again, the fandom was still collectively figuring it out. Also, DYEWTS? Pinkie wins 35-0 against Rarara in Dragonshy. See picrel.>>Fluttershy is the camouflage agentHold on, am I forgetting something earlier, or was this just an insane guess. Magic Duel was released after that chapter. Then again, the fic also guesses Detective Rarity so maybe he had read permissions to the timeline.>What even is the point of going 'hey readers, do you know this song? The point is readers going "Yeah, we do!" and everyone feeling good about themselves after that interaction.>NoYes.>forgot what Spike's name is butSpines. Huh. You're right that this one's different. Also the /ss/ thing looks a lot more suspicious with them and Rarities swapped.

>>42928406This is actually perfectly in character for starscribe to do. If you know you know.
>>42929032>"patting herself on the back"horses have backs>girl'sthere are more utterances of "girl" in the show than "mare" or "filly"
>>42929051>fucking kekThe one that killed me was the Scooteroll. I'm not even too sure why I find it that funny.>>42929182>horses have backsBut ponies who aren't pink cannot pat themselves on their backs. That's the very silly part of the expression.>there are more utterances of..."Girl" is fine; that is not the word that was wrong. The poor word there is "men's". I included "girl's" because that was in the source quote for context, including quotation marks. Have you already forgotten how it was in the fic?More generally, the point isn't one or two choices ("bronies"), but that the fic is full of humanized phrases that stick out or, on the opposite end, ponyfications that don't quite work. The Heart of an Author was in the right place.
>>42928317Hey, we're finishing next week. Do we know what we'll read after that?
>>42929310The only suggestion I heard was Jinglemas fics. Any of those worth reading should already be out. But we'd have to pick which ones we were interested in, because they're not all good and there's far too many to read them all.
>>42929310I was too invested in cutting my post down to size and forgot all about that. Reading Jinglemas fics was pretty fun last year, so yeah, maybe those! Who the fuck writes a 50k Jinglemas story? Does it follow the prompt at all? Even if it does, does the recipient even want to read it?
So what if The Man From Earth, but it's Celestia?

>>42929417>I struggle to explain why something can be very gripping without being brilliantI think that applies to a lot of art, no? Between the slop and the really good stuff there's a sea of things that are simply very enjoyable.
>>42929503Griping does not equal enjoyable.
>>42929497Is this a serious suggestion? Because we could include all the thread author fics. I don't know how many there are, but surely those alone wouldn't exhaust our reading quota for the week?

We can also read Jinglemas fics over two or even three weeks to cover a couple more.>reading quotaCould be a skill issue, but it's also a bit harder to not get lost in the replies when there are too many fics read in one week. 5 per week max is probably close to the upper limit, at least for me.
>>42929519I wrote about the students six this year.I wouldn't make you read about that, because if a fic a out them was chosen on any other week, I'd skip it.
>>42929555Trips confirm, I suppose.I didn't include EqG or G5 in >>42929366 for that reason.
>>42929532I've read a few of the highly rated Jinglemas fics, and honestly some of them are kinda bad. I don't know whether it's because of the prompts or because those authors aren't very good. Probably some combination. On the other hand, ratings are still worth something. I'm not sure I'd want to read https://www.fimfiction.net/story/585614/not-even-a-third-wheel-but-still-a-better-love-story-than-twilight except to watch a train wreck in motion.>>42929555Normally I'd skip a Student Six fic, too, but in this case, I'd read it because it's from a thread author.
>>42929555Too bad, we'll be reading that, too! We even read an eqg fic last year—the only one in the club's history—because it was written by thread author.

>>42930234I dunno, everytime I think of extending scenes like that it just feels like bloat.
>>42930254No, not in the sense of extending scenes. In the sense of adding more scenes. If you find new things for DB to do, then you also make existing things happen more slowly. Like, maybe she has an argument with some noble and incinerates him. Or you show more rebel planning. Or you add some kind of other subplot. Any of these slow down the fic, but done right, they're also interesting on their own. The right way to bulk up a story isn't to add useless padding; it's to find new things to say.

>>42930032I wish I started browsing these threads earlier. I read that one and didn't know you guys did a book club for it.>My problem is that this story is very sweet. The DB and Twilight stuff is very cute and earnest and sincere and gives the warm and fuzzies and all that jazz. I eat that stuff up like candy on Halloween. It is hard to give an unbiased critique when the story hits my niche so well. As for a way to add more to it with it being padding? Some more perspective on Twilight at the start could have been nice. One observation I have is that it felt like a story where the ending was writing first, and everything else was made to fit it. There's nothing wrong with that, but it feels like obvious re-reading it. DB is really just Celestia lashing out over the death of her sister, and she is going to adopt Twilight at the end, showing the she can still feel love and come back from her fiery pit of emotional despair. With that set in stone, the challenge becomes "can I sell a happy ending for this dictator to my audience?" With that in mind, you can't make her too evil, because then the ending feels unjust. But you also have to make her evil enough so the uprising feels justified. It is a tough balancing act. I think it comes out well, with the most notable consequence being that DB can be kind of a soft villain at time for dictator standards.Again, DB is basically just angsty Celly in this story, which is fine. DB is more of a concept than a character, so I think it is fine to be flexible with her. I think it works because the shades of Celestia come through well enough. If I was a smart ass, I could say that DB parallels Celestia very well. Whereas Celestia is built up as this powerful force of nature with a bunch of pre-show feats that then job to every major villain, DB is built up as this super scary dictator who fold to one little filly. That's not my opinion, but it does sound funny.Overall, I enjoyed it a lot. I gave it a like and favorite immediately after finishing it. I don't think it needs a sequel, but if Fae writes one then I will read it anyway.
>>42932013>DB can be kind of a soft villain at time for dictator standards.I feel like the major issue is that all her villainy exists but it's in a nebulous impersonal quality. She's an arrogant dick but her actions aren't really personal to the audience, she's not going around murdering random ponies for flimsy reason (her one on-screen kill is more-or-less justified), she's doing things like starting wars and taking territory for no reason and that's harder to contextualize in a way that the average reader would want to see her taken down.
>>42932162Yeah, I can see that, which is kind of what I meant with the balancing act. She has to be hateable for the characters but not the audience for the ending to work. I was going to say she feels like a Disney villain, but even Shan Yu or Muntz had bodies counts. I don't even have a good solution to suggest. I guess you could make it a "Beauty and the Beast" thing where she isn't completely hated, so you can away with her being not that evil? But then that would be a different story.

https://www.fimfiction.net/story/356700/how-to-disappear-completelyWhere the fuck do I even begin with this piece of shit? It's a genuinely fun story full of equal parts whimsy and emotion stapled to a second story centered around egregiously bad "the world sucks everythings fucked nothing even matters im so deppresed #emo #fuckyoumomanddad" philosophy that looks like it was not just concieved by a 14-year old, but personally typed by them as well. It's so fucking jarring to go from some delightful interactions between "Flash Sentry" and our lovely cast of show characters like Derpy, Octavia, and Soarin (all written well), to some long-awaited emotional payoff as one of the Princesses confronts him about his presence in Equestria and the dam bursts open... only to be followed up by multiple chapters of pure uninterrupted dialogue, all from not-even-pretending-he's-Flash-anymore, that are best summed up as "ABLOOABLOOABLOO REAL WORLD SUCKS BECAUSE WAR FOR OIL AND CAPITALISM AND PEOPLE ARE MEAN AND NOBODY EVEN CARES AND I DON'T EVEN CARE BECAUSE I SUCK TOO AND EVERYTHING SUCKS AND EVERY1 SO MEAN TO ME" and I had to force myself not to drop the fic right fucking there, which I regret not following through on.Let's start from the top. This is, on paper at least, is a fic about EqG Flash Sentry feeling down in the dumps and running away from his problems to Equestria. I foolishly assumed that the EqG autism would be cancelled out by the fact it mostly takes place in Equestria, and that the HiE autism would be cancelled out by the fact our protagonist is a named character instead of the author/readers' self-insert, and by the fact that he's from the EqG world instead of the real world anyway. Add to that that it was by a respected author (though this was the first work of his I've read, and boy did it leave an impression), and that it was recommended last thread, and all my defenses were down. The fic has a bit of a rough opening as it paints us a picture of Flash's shit life. It lays the defeated, nihilistic depression on a little too thick, but the way it was narrated nonetheless struck some emotional chords with me, and more importantly was presented in a way that made it very clear that Flash's worldview was wrong and that lots of his troubles were all in his head or due to the way he engaged with the world around him and how he'd given up on life, and the parts where he shrugged off the only people who cared about him hit close to home.
>>42935238>that Flash's worldview was wrongI don't remember that fic but isn't it validated at the end, thus making it pointless?
>>42935238He was clearly being set up to come back out of Equestria with a fresh outlook on life, and it was also setting up for emotional confrontations with Twilight and Sunset down the line, keeping me interested by dangling characters I actually like in front of my face. Things were a tad too gritty, and there were too many IRL references for my liking, but it seemed to mostly just be playing to how much Flash thought everything sucked and I could write off some of it as his unreliable narration. The story was rough but full of promise, and I was hopeful as he finally took the plunge into Equestria.By all means, the story really did improve here. The intentionally exaggerated woe-is-me highschooler shit was replaced by the joy and wonder and whimsy of Equestria, and all the ponies he encountered were such a delight. I could finally see why I saw so much praise for skirts' writing—everything about the Equestria-focused sections of the story was an absolute joy to read, and if it's representative of how his non-humanslop stories are written then I might even give them a try despite the terrible taste this story left in my mouth. Later on in the story, Flash separately encounters Luna (in his dreams) and Cadance and Celestia towards the climax, and the conversations he has with them about why he ran away from home and his experiences here are cathartic. That's where my praise ends.I'll start with the most egregious fucking problem with this fic: it is not about Flash Sentry. It's about our protagonist, sure, and he IS named Flash Sentry, but this story is ultimately some sort of self-insert HiEfic that had references to EqG stuff here and there haphazardly slapped on after the meat of it had already been written. "Flash" doesn't act especially like Flash at all, instead he's a slightly vulgar memelord who's nihilistic in matters of the real world and nothing short if happy-go-lucky when focused on Equestria. Standard internet shitposter "real life sucks I want to live in Equestria" sort of deal. He constantly spouts non-EqG references to real life problems and pop-culture. The pop culture references in his dialogue are no big deal at first but get noticably worse as the story goes on, ending up nearly Ready Player One-tier.
>>42935245The reunions with HorseTwi and Sunset end up being underwhelming and almost feeling like afterthoughts, which they would be if making him Flash was a last minute decision. He seems to think 'Brad' is a normal-sounding cover name despite that name not being normal in the EqG world either, where even background characters are given pony-sounding names except a couple he has history with that have real-world names like Kyle and Andy, which makes sense if they were from a pre-EqG draft. There's some buildup to revealing the source of some guilt he'd been feeling, and it would fit perfectly with his mopeyness about how he's "no better than everyone else" if it connected with a briefly-touched-upon plot thread where his time dating pre-redemption she-demon Sunset led to him burning a lot of bridges at her insistence... but instead it's just some underwhelming flashback to a time he, a teenager, didn't give a ride to some adults having car trouble who didn't even have the money to afford any hotel he would've supposedly been driving them to anyway. What was he supposed to do, let them stay at his house? Has nothing to do with Flash and just altogether makes no fucking sense. His "everything sucks nothing matters" philosophy seems to get better, then it comes back, then it gets better again, only for it to get even worse despite being framed as somehow an improvement. Just look at the insufferable fucking drivel in pic related, AFTER most of his supposed character development. There's like three whole chapters in a row of this wangst. I almost dropped it right here, but I weather through it, and afterwards it seems to actually get better, as if the author got it all out of his system. Some good dialogue and interactions after the fact, Flash seems to finally do some real self-reflection and face his problems head-on with a new outlook on life and goes back home, and there's even some narration that does a good job depicting the whole "there was good all around you the whole time, you just needed to actually be looking for it" lesson he learned.
>>42935253And then the ending hits. When, out of nowhere, he ignores the reassuring-but-increasingly-worried messages from Sunset all day, throws away his phone, scrambles all his passwords online, withdraws all his money, and packs up to leave town, I got my hopes up that I was witnessing a last-minute pivot to a troll ending that would make up for all the missteps in the story just because of how hilariously bold it was. But then it kept going, narratively framed as some sort of character development, with what appeared to be complete sincerity and no details that made it particularly funny. He starts walking off into the wilderness after leaving some goodbye note about how this is a good and healthy thing actually, and how his time in Equestria made him realize that he isn't worthless and can actually do good around him—which he'll accomplish by abandoning the lessons he actually learned and leaving behind worried friends and family to go "find himself" by becoming a teenage hobo. Sunset fails to talk him down, and off he goes. This ending, of course, isn't so egregious if you imagine that he isn't Flash Sentry, Sunset and the other girls do not exist and have no equivalent, and therefore Not-Actually-Flash doesn't actually have much of a support network and just lives in a shithole. No longer is he running away from the solution to his problem like a pussy bitch, he's actually genuinely taking his lesson to heart and getting away from his problems instead of moping about it, taking the risk and putting himself out there in search of something better like his adventures in Equestria. As it is, though, this ending is rancid dogshit.Bottom line is, don't read this fucking story. I wasted more time reading it than it was worth, and for that matter, more time writing this review than it was worth, so I won't even bother giving it a once-over to edit for typos or clarity before posting. I must seriously question the taste of whoever recommended it last thread, and question whether they even read it at all considering it was touted as "doing Flash Sentry right" when it seemed to forget it was writing him at all. I was tricked into reading dumb HiEslop and I feel like I should be financially compensated./rant
>>42935258I don't know what's with older fics establishing a character's toxic mindset or an issue and then validating it right at the end.
>>42935258I'm fairly strongly convinced this fic was the tipping point where Skirts' mental unwellness caught up to him. It happened during one of the last Easthorse hiatuses, I believe. He was never actually mentally well but there was at least a period of time at the height of his popularity where his actual talent let him channel that into some actually good fics. But his depth was always overrated and misjudged by people who knew no better and the level of horsefame he reached did unimaginable damage to his psyche. If anyone where to actually ever read through all his blogs and stories and alts in order I'm convinced it would trace a picture of a clear mental decline.

>>42943922He doesn't exactly say these are kino old fandom classics. He says they're rereads of things he read a long time ago. Then he comments that they skew older and that they "can be considered classics", which is not quite the same thing as actually being classics. Then he writes "if this blog let’s you discover". Which should tell you all you need to know about the quality of Paul's work and opinions.
>>42943922I remember dropping The Cutie Mark Allocation Agency after four or so chapters because I could not bring myself to care. The Donutier is the blandest story to receive that much praise I've ever seen. It's aggressively ~5/10 material.I can't remember what The Incandescent Brilliance is about, but I gave it a thumbs down, even though I generally like KitsuneRisu's stuff.
>>42943922I've only read a few of those, so:>500 Little MurdersIt's very good, and it's a little strange to me that you've never seen it. It gets mentioned here semi-often, and sits in the current SK if I remember right. Some people prefer Sun Princess to it, but both are written well and very effective.>RiseAnother one of these I'd actually agree is a minor classic. I didn't like it as much as some others itt, and honestly, I could be underrating it. Blueshift has a very specific style, especially when it comes to writing endings to his fics. I am not the biggest fan of these semi-"realistic" endings in his otherwise very fantastic settings, but if you don't mind that, you will probably like this story, potentially a lot. It's one of his better ones, imo. >For Whom We Are HungryIt's CiG. It's also in second person, but while CiG can sometimes miss (his last three, 1k word fics were aggressively mediocre), this isn't one of those misses. Probably wouldn't be my first CiG recommendation, but oh well; you could do so much worse.>The Haunting of the Carousel BoutiqueGood, but it's a 2021 fic for Luna's sake! I have no idea what he was smoking to call it a fic he read a long time ago.>Cutie Mark Allocation Agency>Wild Fire>Queen of QueensI cannot directly comment on the quality of these fics since I haven't read them, but these authors wrote other good stories that have been discussed here. Since Paul liked these three enough to WHYRTY them twice, it's a little more likely that they have some merit, too. Then again, he did the same with Mother of Invention and that fic was just bad.
>>42943922I read Queen of Queens a while ago. It definitely had some interesting worldbuilding ideas, I remember enjoying the philosopher changelings and the detailing of their perspective on Equestria. But like many contest fics, it's crippled by having to adhere to a specific word count. I think I even remember seeing a comment from the author admitting some things were rushed to fit into 15k. You can really feel it in the second half. The changeling civil war subplot in particular was infuriating when a renegade faction of changelings just killed a bunch of civilians and then blamed Chrysalis for "their people dying" in a different context, and she didn't even think to point out the obvious hypocrisy. I don't recall the exact details, but I remember Chrysalis' punishment at the end being unnecessarily gnarly and OOC for ponies. I think this author wrote horror and couldn't help inserting grimdark things into every story of his. It's an okay fic, arguably a good one even, but definitely not one that's fully realized its potential.

The straightest good fic on the site, in>/FSBC/Jokes aside, it's not a joke. While the 2nd half is less consistent in its goodness, the fic overall has stood the test of time really well and fully justifies its "classic" status. I don't want to repeat everything that was said last week, but I must say that the show-like atmosphere of the fic continued to deliver in the earlier parts of the 2nd half. Pinkie's chapter was, predictably, the weakest—until it wasn't. While that's mostly AJs' (<- I really wanted to write that) doing, the chase was good and very S1-esque. Also, early season references are good here! Twilight's part... eh. I don't want to dock points for this, but while the idea to end on that was good, the drama wasn't written with the same level of quality as the rest of the fic. The resolution of it was pretty nice, though. And then, The Endings. In capital letters, because we're doing the "extended ending"-type of finale here. It usually fails miserably, but it can be really nice when it works; see WoE (one of the few unquestionably good parts of that fic). Here, it *mostly* works. The character interactions and the epilogues were enjoyable, and that matters the most! Subjectively, though, I think the author was a coward afraid of writing the better ending. The separation-ending cliche is bad even when the story tries to present it as reasonable. I don't know how it could've worked, but it's unfortunate that the author didn't try, deciding on /mostly/ keeping the status quo. It is also pretty bad, building to romance and then going "lol no" at the end. It's downright cruel to write it like that. Perhaps the sequel was supposed to come in and solve that problem, but with it permanently dead, we can only judge what we have.As for other criticisms, nothing much comes to mind. LUS is still there, some wording awkwardness persists, and the sex allusions are not anything criminal, but the amount of them clashes with the E rating pretty hard. And this is definitely an E fic, barring the—sometimes very direct—mentions of sex. While I'm on the topic, it's funny that the author seemed to go "well, fuck it!" and said the quiet part out loud, drawing attention to the weirdly incestuous connotations here. Both in jokes and outside jokes. Here goes the joke about Rainbow Gay having issues with, according to her own words, "keeping straight" with RD nearby. And the pottery of having Twilight suddenly get a brother only to have the world imply incestuous relations immediately is too good for a pre-ACW story, kek. Also, trivia: Two sites cite the artist Trotsworth for the R63 designs/names that this author used. I ran out of time and didn't pursue the lead further, but the timeline checks out.Great fic anyway!Next week(s), Jinglemas fics! I've been, and still am, quite busy, so I'll post the lists later. But they'll be posted, I promise!

Good to see some of you guys on /tg/.
>>42946479Well I really don't have too much to say. The story actually managed to finish strong and maintain its level of quality all the way through. Maybe the only part of the story I didn't like was the weird (and thankfully short) moment where Twilight and Dusk are talking and Dusk randomly goes off about how stallions can be 'aggressive and scary'. These gender stereotypes make literally no sense at all for either dimension and most especially for both of them. Even if this was the case it would just be the opposite in the other dimension. Aside from that hiccup though this story was fantastic. Truly a good example of the early works where terms and ideas hadn't yet solidified. >the chase scene with pinkie pie just flapping around like a flag >dusk acts like twilight has a gun to his head >TWILIGHT HES RIGHT BEHIND YOU >both Twilights realizing they love their sun god >"Got any aces?" "Hmmm... nope! Go Graze!" >unicorns have an inner eyeall kek>twilight sneaking out to meet duskKino team leader meet up, but the accusation that they slept together literally right after they explain their relationship they settled on doesn't make any sense, although I guess it was some weird sort of prank that just wasn't funny>pegusai >man/ladywew, truly the frontier of ponyfics>"ah'm still an Apple. Ah'm still family. Even in this world... Ah'm still Applejack."Kino, also gave me flashbacks to the Alicorn Adventure series when twilight finds out she has a dimensional game going with all of her other selves for some reason>Rarity's narcissism actually leads to being the only pair to constructively reflect on the 2 dimensions and bring material benefit to them in bothWow color me surprised. They stopped masturbating and actually probably gained the most from the adventure aside from Twilight>while rarity makes out with herself twilight is peering into 'voids unseen by mortal eyes' with duskKek, kino. To goon, or unlock the mysteries of the universe...>"You're like the sister I never had."fucking keeek, there's some funny ass early fandom stuff in this>"Take care o' the farm, Cousin."Kino apple departure>pinkie pie pizza partyBerry bubble or whatever must have much weaker alliteration, p is both party and pony and pink. B has nothing as legitimate as that, and even worse goes with boring>anarchy apolloKek thats fucking retarded>it was all Celestia 4d chess and she can also watch twilight sleeping wheneverKek, highly amusing that this was somehow all Celestia's plan. And again I'm glad it had a good ending. A very SoL ending, where someone just does something they didn't really wanna do and then everything works out. The last chapter was also amusing but a bit far fetched that Apple bloom had it that easy finding a unicorn almost as good as twilight within like just a few days
>>42946479>I must say that the show-like atmosphere of the fic continued to deliver in the earlier parts of the 2nd halfThe chase scene was actual pony kino with Pinkie just flapping around the entire time>the weakest—until it wasn't. >>42946760If you posted 20 minutes earlier, I would have been able to catch you. Alas. Now it's late and I still have things to do.>Dusk randomly goes off about how stallions can be 'aggressive and scary'This was the worst of it, and I have noted it down; I just didn't think it's bad enough to warrant a mention in the post. 2011 was a different era, etc., etc., and naive "feminism" of this kind was sort of expected in fics. But there's a lot more of subtle-ish soapboxing throughout the fic, only the delivery is less aggressive—see the plentiful mentions how [M6pony] is not any worse than [R63counterpart], that they aren't weak, etc. I believe it's well-intentioned and genuine on the author's part so I'd never hold it against the fic, though it does date it somewhat. You wouldn't read anything like that in any decent 2026 story.>Aside from that hiccup though this story was fantastic. It's fics like these and Twice as Bright that make oldfics worth reading.>>pegusai >man/ladyYeah, that was quite something. Though tbdesu "fillies and gentlecolts" is literally episode 1, so you can call it a skill issue.>To goon, or unlock the mysteries of the universe...whynotboth.jpgActually, that's a way to solve the problem. Just dump all earth ponies through the dimensional portal and take all the unicorns. Perfect world! Class segregation, here we go! There won't be a Windigo problem if the mudhorses are gone.>Kek thats fucking retardedIt is, but the fic earned enough respect to tolerate some one-off retardation.>>42946775>I liked all of it but for the page or so talking about men. There is a section maybe five pages long where Twilight struggles mentally to meet Dusk, and I didn't really care for that part. I don't know why, but the drama didn't really feel all that strong there.>Twilight literally finishes her sentence about how they're siblings and all the girls go 'So you fucked right?'I mean, she does tell them that they shared a bed. They just knew. Also, two of them are into their R63 counterparts, so of course they'd think of that first.>>42946479>Jinglemas fics!Update: Tomorrow or on Tuesday.
