It's tough to say. If you're a manager of a big board or a heel team, if you run weird shit, you tend to get shit on. their win against /mlp/ was the PESing of a lifetime. Their keeper got MotM while both /mlp/'s wing defenders rolled a 4.5 performance. You're now seeing what happens when a team PESes it's way into an Elite with a seriously flawed formation.

>>
>>42983632
The issue is, most managers are using the same tactics, which results in very samey games, it's the same issue that plagued other PESes, there's not much that could be done because most managers will copy whatever works. Best I could come up with to shake up the metal is to find a way to give extra stats for any formation that isn't 4-4-2/4-3-3/3-4-3

this is true, managers just aren't willing to have fun anymore or to treat the cup as something entertaining to do for themselves and also to give back to the board a bit. it's some bigass thing that I'm sure most people feel the need to tryhard at, or at the very least perform well, or else they've failed the board or something

I could go into a long rant about all the reasons if you want, but there's a couple big reasons as to why I think things have unfortunately evolved this way.

Alright fine I will, and to preface this all with saying this is from my audience-only uninformed-ass, so if any actual manager wants to pop in and tell me to pipe down idiot, feel free to.

So I think it comes down to a couple big points which can explain: why people are afraid to step up and BE, why there are managers or caretakers who don't really seem to try anymore, and why many managers who do try seem to be frustrated with things.

>cup is now SRS BSNS
I think people like to reminisce on the old days of the cup because it was a lot more of the Wild West. People were creating new tools, everybody was starting from scratch, and everything had to be built from the ground up. Hell, in the Germanbro days, people had to deal with whatever the hell he was feeling that day, like ignoring requests or "oops I rigged it" and you just had to deal, which was obviously not the proper way to go about things, but at the same time, the cup was just a fun tournament that didn't really mean much other than watching some fun streams, trying to do what you could, and some glory for your board if you did well or even won.

That isn't the cup anymore. What my uneducated eyes see is that most of the cup's managers seem to be three types of people, two of which I'll outline here: tryhards who spend as much free time as possible dedicated to editing and testing everything, and lazy fucks who go copy/paste on whatever worked last cup and call it a day. This is because there seem to be a lot more stakes in winning or losing and a lot more pressure to do well:

- You now have an audience which will make fun of you if you don't do well, including but not limited to /4ccg/, chat, your own board, and admin on First Boom.
- You have a board that you like and respect and want to give something back to by doing this for them, but it's incredibly easy to feel like you're failing the board if you don't do well, not to mention you could get shouted down to death about it (see us, /sp/, etc).
- If you're starting out, you have a lot to learn with both the game and software that's been created for it, a lot to create on both the tactics and entertainment sides depending on how much you want to change (read entertainment as models and music export), and a crazy amount of stress during match day. It's intimidating for somebody who just wants to try and do something, even with the assistance from former managers and admin. The various invitationals for newfags starting out is a good place to get your feet wet, but it's a whole other thing to do it for the cup proper.

>Time and Age
Let's face it, most people who are still interested in this thing are getting up there in age, with a full-time job, perhaps family or somebody you have to take care of, and all the other responsibilities of being an adult. We joke about the age thing all the time, but most people aren't 20-something's still in college or fucking around and finding out about life with a bunch of time on the side to dedicate to frivolous shit like this. Back when the userbase was younger, people had the time and even the desire to delve into whatever PES they were working with, learn its ins and outs, test a bit or play a couple friendlies to see what worked and what didn't, make some shitty playerfaces and maybe steal a model or two, and then submit something and hope it does well. But that's not really the case for most people anymore.

I think this can also be taken in conjunction with how much time the internet is eating up of people's free time and killing their attention spans as well. I can't tell you the amount of people who say they would do something but they're "busy" or "I've been meaning to do it but haven't got around to it" or some other bs when they basically spend most of their free time on the internet doing a whole lot of nothing. Back when using the internet was more of a decision to specifically do something, like go check a webcomic or explore a new forum, rather than a way to waste time inbetween every single task, people were more apt to use the thing for its purpose and do what they originally set out to do, such as prepare their team for the cup. But not anymore really.

>Lack of New PESes
This one's already been complained about to death, but it used to be that every other cup cycle or so, there was a new PES coming out that worked differently, had new tactics and buttons, new features to make the game more entertaining (models, balls, arenas, etc), and different ways for someone to experiment and try to make something out of nothing. You had the knowledge from past PESes maybe, but that might not work at all on the new one, and that's what made it so interesting. People would try wack shit, and maybe it wouldn't work, but it'd make for exciting and fun matches.

Now it's basically all figured out. Any manager can go to past saves that worked out well or won cups in the past, edit them to conform to the new ruleset, and hit submit. And that's perhaps attractive to some, and the sheer fact that you can do that draws a lot of ire from others. Patches have been implemented to try and change that from being the case obviously, but usually by the Elites, one or another team(s) in the Babby previous or an invitational league will have something that performs well.

------

So you want to BE(E) the change? You either have to be someone who's willing to ignore/block out all the baggage the cup now comes along with and just do your own thing for the sake of it, or you have to have the hard-headedness/stubbornness of Bl1nky or SDA to continue doing what you're doing/hold onto the team for forever despite all criticism in the hopes that something you do works one day (no disrespect to either of them btw, just the first two that came to mind). It's no wonder that it's difficult to get managers or even caretakers anymore. I'm sure there are a good number of people who would be willing to try and pick up the torch for /theirboard/ that's currently dead, like that one /xs/ dude who always chickens out, and that want to put in the time and effort to try and do a good job, but then would have to put up with the pressure and stress of the whole thing. And of course you could explain all this away by saying "just don't be such a fucking pussy lol" and that's true, but I think for most people it's honestly difficult to do that (and a lot of the people who use that canned response never do anything themselves anyway, so). I mean, there's a lot of time and commitment wrapped up in it that could all be for nothing. Well, nothing and disappointment.

Plus, the cup being SRS BSNS explains what appear to be two of the main kinds of people who are managers or caretakers now. The tryhards are obvious: they make it one of their only hobbies to continually test and perform and do better and win a cup. Maybe they just enjoy it or it gives them some fulfillment, but no doubt they must feel the enormous amount of pressure and want to live up to it and do well by it. But it also explains the people who just lazily copy somebody else's export: they have the pressure of the audience to not get laughed at and the pressure of the board to do well by, but why not skate by all that bullshit by doing the minimum amount of effort possible and just be average? They don't actually care whether they do well or not, but just as long as they're not last. I mean, for a lot of longtime managers, you already have the models and music export figured out, so why not forgo the actual hard part of learning the PES that's being switched to when somebody else already did it for you? I could argue these people actually don't care and might just be going through the motions at this point.

>>42984208
And then you have the people who are neither tryhards nor lazy fucks: the people who are managers, maybe for a while, and want to at least put in the effort to do well, but are frustrated by the PES they're dealing with and the rules they have to abide by. If they don't have a lot of time (or lack the attention span anymore), they won't be able to delve into the PES version and re-figure out how to make a good export (or take an existing one and figure out why it works). If they figure out the meta enough, they can see what most matches will eventually boil down to. And if they can't do either or can't figure out something more unique that actually works, then obviously that's frustrating in and of itself.

I think it's totally fair to argue "well buddy, that's what you signed up for" and tell people to deal, especially when a lot of the complaining could be solved by people slowing down and taking the time to just read and try shit out, but at the same time, you have to keep in mind these are people who are doing this of their own free time and volition. They do it because they want to. It's supposed to be fun, and they want to try to make it fun by at least giving it their best shot. But if they have their board breathing down their neck, the constant nagging in the back of their mind to not become a laughing stock, and a PES that seems to already be solved with the lazy fucks who will just shit out something that could do well enough if PES lets it, then why bother.

I guess that's my thoughts on things. I also have thoughts on why specifically First Boom doesn't help anything, since it can literally be you hearing admin and admin-adjacent telling you you're dogshit, but I think those are the main things. If you agree or disagree or think I'm full of shit or have insider knowledge™ that tells me I don't know what I'm talking about, then let me know. I know a lot of it boils down to stress and pressure to perform well, but I think it's just sucked the fun out for people actually participating in the cup, and why you see more people leaving/retiring and less people coming in than you'd like to see or, if you're cynical, needs to be.

Is this real or that one italian copypasta? Can't even remember.

I mean, considering I spent about four hours writing it, cuz I care (lame), then no, it's not a copypasta. and I'm not AnontheAnon.

Interesting write up, and I agree. I think the lack of new PES is the biggest issue, and I don't know if that's ever gonna change now that Konami turned it into a passive money generator to siphon cash from retards.

I think you raise some really good points, but I cannot stress enough how much cup threads being banned outside of here, /vg/ and /sp/ helps with the decay, newfags don't know what the fuck is the cup, the amount of times I've went to some other board's cup thread and there's more than one post thinking that the cup is an actual e-sport is embarrassingly high (when it's an oldfag they always mention Dragonfag somehow, you can't measure how much that hurt the cup's legitimacy in the eyes of the regular 4chan audiences). Now, I think there is ways to reversing that trend, at least on the bigger boards, (if you're on a small board you're either turbofucked by jannies or lucky enough that you don't need much when it comes to POI) and that is, board leagues/memevitationals, most people who know about the 4cc from /vt/ know it because it's something related to the VTL, same thing for /vg/ and the VGL, an in board tournament that panders to the board's interests/generals would attract people that would later join the cup to cheer for their homeboard, but it's a concept that could easily be 0botched and backfire massively, just look at Blinky's pitful excuse of "/a/ league" for an example of what not to do

You've done a good job summarizing the reasons 4cc culture has shifted over the years, all of those factors play a role to a greater or lesser extent. But from my perspective, "Time and Age" is the most important. The ideal 4cc manager is a college student or young NEET with a passion for memes and a ton of free time on their hands - I was a student myself when I got started. But fewer and fewer newfags have found the cup over time, both due to discoverability of the 4cc being low on most boards and fewer underaged b&s wandering into 4chan in the first place. The oldfags keep getting older, the newfags keep getting rarer, and a 4cc where the average manager age is closer to 40 than 20 is a very different proposition.

I admittedly am part of that problem, I've been hanging around for a decade now. I'm still here for the same reason I started in the first place - to contribute something fun to the board I love - but I, as much as anyone, don't have the free time or the fire in the belly I did all those years ago.

Nevertheless, I try to keep the focus on the fun and the memes, and I do hope that helps.

Damn you for making me post here, but honestly the biggest issue compared to when I used to manage, is that there's way too many people that take this shit to the point of being an esport or some shit. When I used to be a manager, it wasn't like that and stuff was way more relaxing, even for the tryharders. Plus, it doesn't help that the cup as a whole is disliked by the janitors and such.

And the biggest elephant in the room is not being able to move to any new game. Of course, if you move to old games, people are just going to recycle what worked in the past. Why would you want to put your free time into work to see if you can come up with some new undiscovered thing when stuff is pretty much already resolved? A new game would completely shake things up because people would be willing to try it. But if you are stuck to these old PES versions, no amount of rule changes are going to change the games on a fundamental level.

Move 4cc to play in Brasfoot or something

What other games would work?
>>
>>42986039
FEEFUR
>>
>>42986039
What about that one "open football" game someone linked in /4ccseethe/?
Or FEEFUR, yeah.
>>
>>42986039
That's the issue, no other game is really as modable as PES is, sure you can make models for Feefur but that still leaves the fact that you can't make custom teams that adhere to the 4cc rules, or have AI vs AI, no idea if other games are better or worse when it comes to this, you could try branching out to other sports but then you run into the issue that most sports have either too many or too few players, so you either run out of ideas pretty quickly or have too few players to work with
>>
>>42986101
Yeah, I was thinking of ideas outside of football, since PES is kinda the only option for that. And aside from wrasslin, which can be fun, the other stuff that's been tried hasn't been as entertaining.

Personally I think the best substitute would be either luckswing or hockey, but I don't think there's any game that would have a coach mode for either sport

guess i will throw my thoughts in regarding dead teams and >bee

Problem is mostly that i hear /admin/ repeating that be the chance and need new managers etc... Earlier it was noted that cup has pretty high skill level cap for any new guy to revive any long dead team. But imo problem sits deeper at where to get fresh new blood as cup viewership has gone down a lot and sometimes in board ninja cup threads people go "oh its still happening" showing that even people that know about it aren't really watching it. Other reasons being that cup happens in hidden channel that removes all "what is this" venturers on cytube level. Net being that there isn't really any advertisement material begin with aside some clips here and there, invitationals now have more fresh stuff in youtube than cup and wouldn't be suprised if /vt/umor adjancents were making tiktoks about their stuff. So in short, cup has in every sense gone hiding to sidelines. And even if viewers would come offsite, there is yahooo and wake ups to forewarn what kind of shitshow is coming.

So in short, as cup viewership is going down for many reasons, so will be candidates to >bee and imo should first figure out how to get people to watch cup again and then advertise >bee to them.

It's also that the site in general has slowed down considerably over the last few years, going from nearly 1 million posts/day to now around 575k/day. Fewer people, less exposure.
>>
>>42986169
VGL and VTL have been the only major supplies of new blood in years.
But many of the newer vgl guys don’t care about 4cc at all.
>>
>>42986195
Well after the hack the website slowed down a lot honestly. It looks like that the hack was the last straw for a lot of people.

The hack definitely caused a hit, but the site was at 1M/day in 2022 and by 2024 it was down to 700k/day. It's been on a downward trend for awhile.

Dang, I knew 4chan was slowing down, but I didn't know posting was down almost 50%. It's even worse when you remember some of the posts now are from bots.
>>
>>42986212
Because those are mostly gachafags and actual koreans
>>
>>42986212
I'd rather the main Cup die and just let the board have invitationals with a single year Champions League with each board sending their two teams that won the most recent leagues.
>>
>>42986319
To be fair I assume 2022 isn't the best point of comparison, what did it look like before covid?
>>
>>42986396
Probably only 4 boards can maintain board leagues
>>
>>42986328
tbf bot posting is rather low these days with the new captcha
>>
>>42986513
Right now there are 6 boards with active leagues (/vg/, /vt/, /vr/, /vm/, /mu/ and /mlp/), outside of that you have boards that had leagues in the past (/tv/, /a/, /pol/, /sp/, /co/, /u/, /int/ and /vp/ from what I remember), even if most of those weren't actually leagues and just some streamer making a couple of teams related to their homeboard and playing it just for fun
>>
>>42985873
As an oldfag ex-manager I can safely say it's been like that since when I started managing back in 2013. There's always been tryhard teams.

The thing about managing "for fun" is that there will always be that one formation or tactic style that the PES you're playing on likes best, and if you're not playing that you are just going to be on the automatic backfoot (backhoof?) compared to people that do run that, whether they tryhard or not.

The thing about tryharding isn't neccesarily about winning, it's about wanting your players to score goals and provide entertaining content.

Look how popular the cup has become on /mlp/. That would not have happened if /mlp/ hasn't been a tryhard team. Success = fun.
