Hello hello! It’s that time again, time for another GameJam!
In case you’re not aware. We’ve been doing Game Jams every 4 months or so, mainly at the board cons.
Why at (board) cons? Well, to showcase them of course, the games will be played LIVE with an audience at the last day of the con. Current time is Sunday 29th of March 5 PM EST, check the anchor in case the time changes.

Please don’t hesitate in doing so, having an initial number of interested people helps me calculate the time I’ll need for the panel. Now, for the theme. Last time we did a restrictive one (which you can check out over here »42778618). This time we’re going for a more thematic one: Horror and edge. Does this mean you HAVE to make horror games? I don’t know, that’s for you to interpret.

We all have busy lives, I don’t expect you to work on your games for a whole month, just to make one in the given time frame.

You’re among pone frens, we’ve had plenty of people dipping their toes into game making in the past in these jams. In my humble opinion, I think these jams are the best way to get started and/or get some practice. If not now, then when? The more pony games, the better!

Bah, as I said, I’m not expecting you, and I don’t think anyone is. You could, but the main goal of these Jams is to finish a project in a given time limit.

Of course! You can work solo or in groups, it’s not against the rules

The only real rule is for your game to be pony related.

Do not cheat! But if you do, then don't tell me... And if you do tell me I'll pretend I didn't hear/read it. I suggest you stick to the time frame. This isn't a competition, and there is no reward other than finishing your projects.

Yeah, you CAN submit multiple; you're allowed to... But people normally only do one. I’d recommend you stick with one too.

Yeah, I guess you can, and we'll still check it out on stream if you decide to share it with us. But I recommend sticking to the restrictions. People find they're more creative when there are limitations!

I wanted to do a little trailer for the Jam as a bumper video for the con, since I haven't finished it, we should do it together!
The main idea I had was to show around one and a half seconds of EVERY game of the one button Jam (the last one), then various clips of games from past Jams. (The games themselves, not the streams)

What's the best engine if I'm only interested in making 2D games? I tried Unity a while ago but most of the tutorials seemed centered on 3D tools. Is Gamemaker any good?

It's purpose-built for 2D and comes with a lot of built-in functions, but tutorials vary wildly in quality and you need a basic level of code knowledge to make it work well. If you know how to code you can choose any of the big names and you'll probably figure it out pretty quickly.
If you're not a coder and have to rely on visual scripting, your options are more limited. I'm using Unreal with the PaperZD plugin to moderate success. Godot's system is more complicated and I still haven't figured it out but I like the datascript thingies. I have no idea about the others.

Yup! Though it may vary depending on the game. If it's a 10 second game then it might get less than 10 minutes, unless we have the dev on stream.
I want to do the Jitsy chat again but with so many people on stream it might be a little harder, I might just hide it in the itch page when I start streaming, so keep an eye out for that.

Probably depends on how you use it. I don't think anyone will fault you for going 100% AI for the graphics, particularly since there's a time crunch (I'm planning on going that route myself). Using it to write some of the code is probably not that big a deal either. If you're talking about literally using AI to shart out an entire game for you, without any human effort being put in at all, that seems like it would violate the spirit of the event and probably result in a mediocre game as well.

I think making AI assets is okay, I understand that making a game does require plenty of skills in areas, and people rarely cover them all. But in my opinion, something made by a human will always be better received, so I suggest giving it your best even if you don't think it's of "quality".

I've had a partially-drafted idea (mostly the mechanics) for a Pony FNaF fan game kicking around for three years now.
I'm considering making a version of that for this, as an excuse to do more practice coding (being the degree I'm trying to study for).

(Originally wanted to make it as a 3D game, but considering I wouldn't have enough time between assignments to learn 3D modeling and make assets, I'd probably just do a custom 2D rendering engine in Python or something.)

If you use an engine that is set up for it you can just set the option in itch.io when you set up the game page. Renpy, Unity and Godot will compile for web, I know that. But basically anything that has an index.html file in the folder and can be launched in a browser can be uploaded to itch as a play-in-browser game.

I ran into a bug. I killed the final boss with Luna dead, but the night guard landed the killing blow the next turn. It still showed the game over screen when I beat the boss.

I don't think any of the devs were offboarders, I talked to a couple of them that I thought could be offboarders. They said they use the board "From time to time"
Mind you, the Jam is already hidden and the only real way to find it is to use the board.

I am aiming for marecon. I made the thread beforehand for two reasons: visibility and pone voyage. Last time I made it 2 weeks before and still a bunch of people missed it, so I made it even earlier, and I think a couple of devs are going to pone voyage (I assume they are rich IT guys), they can make their game beforehand and just post it when they come back. Not really a specific tutorial rec, but this is how I got out of tutorial hell
>find a basic tutorial and get comfortable with basic tools, moving mesh and moving camera (the beginning of donut tutorial, you don't need the rest)
>find a more in depth and specific tutorial for a style you want and can realistically learn(low poly? zelda stylized? environment? props? etc)
>open up new blend file and get started on the project you actually want to make
>get as many references as you can in a style you like (3d models, fanart, etc)

Since the jam is due in 2 months, and you're presumably a beginner at blender, you may not have enough time to make a pony, so maybe stick to stuff that doesn't move. I tried to make a pony 3 months in advance for a previous jam many months ago, and it took so much more time than I expected, I'm still not done
If you want to make a pony anyways, make sure to look up character modeling tutorials so you don't end up with messy topology that messes with deformation, and use plenty of references to make it look good. Though I would suggest using a premade model for this.
Low poly and stylized is much more forgiving with messy topology.
If you can't find how to do a specific thing, watch timelapses of 3d artists whose style you like to get a general idea of the workflow.
Also make sure you understand the import pipeline into your game engine, it's more complicated and finicky than you'd expect

You might also want to think about what your actual goals are. Not just "I want to learn Blender," ask yourself "WHY do I want to learn Blender." If your goal is to challenge yourself by learning something technical and difficult then it might be worth the trouble, but if all you want to do is make a game and you don't really care how it works under the hood there are easier ways to go about it.

I've tried to learn Blender on multiple occasions and I find the interface way too complicated, plus I am probably the world's shittiest 3D artist so I don't get much out of it. If you just want a 3D engine that can get a simple game up and running in under a month, Unreal is probably your easiest option. Their asset store also gives away free stuff every couple of weeks so you can get a lot of props and useful stuff that way, saves you the hassle of having to make every single thing yourself. The current giveaway has a low-poly cabin environment and some medieval castle stuff that would probably work well for a pony-related game. For the actual pony models I think I've seen youtube tutorials for getting the SFM models and animations exported to other engines.

In Unity, at least, when you build the game, you have to change it to compile for web/html and it'll spit out a folder and an "index.html" file. You want to zip both of those up into a zip file, then go to your page on itch where you upload the game. There should be an option called "Kind of project", which you should set to "HTML". Then you just upload the file you zipped earlier and set how it appears under "Embed Options".

The HTML setting on itch still allows you to upload standalone .exe downloads by the way.

I got an idea, I dreamed a game and I thought I might want to try coding it but I'm a total codelet. It goes like this: there are four lanes and you're protecting each lane with like a shield spell and you have to guess correctly from the animation which line the enemy will attack down. Now, to have a good video, it's harder, you need to be a good musician, artist and writefag.
And keep working more than the separate resources combined.

To make a game, you have to know how to code (easiest part), and all the above, for 10x the time.
Either you work with other (and sorry to say that most fan creation brings very motivated people for 5 days, and then all but maybe one disappear without saying a word) or you do with what you can do.
Compound with lack of free time, and it's a disaster.

That's why it's hard to make good indie games.

I have been caught in this cycle for almost 20 years.
IA is really helping by giving "acceptable" ressources, but let's be honest, lot of other solutions already existed before (like open source / C0 images and musics).
Personally, I find it hard to focus once I did the part that interested me (like the terrain generation, or the inventory system, etc.)

Game jam help a bit by having small game, and thus not a lot of ressources to manage, and simple game mechanics.

I wasn't. I finished the Office, and even got Fluttershy composited in.

Everything might ultimately take too long to do though.
Besides the three other characters I have to composite into the office, I've got six characters total, who have to be composited into at least 10 Minecraft screenshots (with about 3 for each location), on top of images for 4 locations that I can probably make directly in Source (with a little map editing).
And I also need close-up PNGs to shake around for the jumpscares.

And then I still have to actually program the damn thing in Pygame.

This is probably more of a 2-3 month project, desu...

Was genuinely not sure how well a lighting-adjusted Minecraft screenshot, with a bunch of pasted PNGs & greenscreened PNGs, would actually look to most people.

Truth be told, I kind of hate the Source engine models for animatronic ponies in particular; they're too organic-looking, especially since there's no hinged jaw. I don't have any 3D modeling skills though, so I just had to make do and use posing + post-processing to get them as close to the intended designs (>>43070319) as possible.

I won't. College & IRL friends are forcing me to pace myself. I'm also not strictly holding myself to the Jam's deadline or anything. Honestly I feel slightly bad for just swiping mediocre art off Derpi like this, so I was hoping to make some crude sketches to replace them if I had time later (or couldn't finish before the deadline).

Oh I just couldn't find any crappy art of an animatronic Fluttershy, lol. If you look real close through the fan, you can see her on the Celebrate poster.
Even if I did have art of her though, it'd be mostly blocked by her head, as each character's drawing is placed to give a vague hint about where they enter and/or how to defend against them.
And none of the Mane 6 are retired characters, though Dashie is temporarily out-of-order in Parts & Service. (It's so she can have similar behavior to Fnaf 1 Foxy.)

I also autistically decided to make them transparent PNGs, but in the same paper dimensions you gave; so that you can have more freedom to edit them and add stuff like story related signatures and such.
I tried to do some style differences to emulate different foals drawing, but if even more people here want to draw more, it would emulate that effect even better!
Some of them are a bit on the nose, but hey. It's a mascot horror game! It's par for the course!

Well... I managed to get the basics of all the systems for now. The dialogue finally works how I want it, and its very customizable. I won't bother with the UI all that much.


Implemented an interaction system with a hold/press function which actually lets you open the UI to talk to them which is sweet.

Getting the Dialogue system to work with the AI was a different pain, spent 2 days just trying to trigger the AI into following a path on clicking a certain dialogue option.

After a full day of scratching my head level transitions also finally work as intended with the player spawning in the proper spot on transition instead of the default world position.

Some simple fog of war that dissapears when the NPC walks in range. (Will be important for story.)

VERY basic AI behaviour with different states. Moves around randomly on the map, if hurt runs away if hears a noise walks to it etc.

Uhhh... I could expand these systems endlessly so fuck that next for me is actually designing the levels, see what works n what doesn't and adapt them to it. Importing the damn pony models and animating them which I already dread its gonna be so ass

There's probably not gonna be any sound unless i figure out how any of that works before the deadline.
Textures most likely will just be just taken off the web and applied to best of my ability.

That's it for the first 2 weeks. Next? Hopefully I can get this shit to actually look decent with the level design and pony models/animations and praying it all doesnt collapse under my autistic unreal engine abilities

I was already excited when I saw the attached image several days ago, but all of them look great!
Had a miserable evening tonight trying to work on the game engine, so this was a nice pick-me-up.
(As for what's wrong with the engine [pic rel]: I've only got 4 images onscreen for testing [one is animated], and performance is already under 100fps.)

Anyways, did you do these in Krita by chance? I want to use the same crayon brush for signatures if I can.

No, I did them in Clip Studio Paint. But I just used their default pencil brush at a large size and unga-bunga pressure when drawing (I even went full fist-grip with some of the writing, trying to make my letters as wonky as possible). I hope Krita has something similar!
