Still, I say it's a worthwhile experience to at least try to write a chapter out and see how it feels. Maybe the story works better at a different pace, or maybe it doesn't but either way you won't know unless you at least experiment with it, and the early stage is the best time to experiment.

If someone doesn't understand the issue with claiming a fan-written story about a character with next-to-no canon characterization is "ooc", then they likely have very little to contribute to your development as a writer. Other than, of course, your own understanding of why that criticism shouldn't apply to your work, but you don't necessarily need to try and explain that to them, it needs only cement itself in your mind to be useful to your project. It'd be nice if they listened and understood, but that is unlikely, and you'd be better off using that time to work on your story instead.
