I'm sure this conversation has been had before, but it's been on my mind, so I want to talk about it. How powerful is Rarity's magic supposed to be considered in-universe?On the one hand, none of the characters really ever seem to show any surprise at what she's capable of. Perhaps this is fair; I certainly will not ignore that Twilight and Starlight clearly eclipse her. However, those two are essentially 99th to 99.99th percentile magic users, and almost all of the magic usage in the show is done by the highest level magic users possible. As far as non-godlike unicorns go, Rarity is about 95% of what we have to work with.On the other hand, I feel like she must be pretty powerful, or at least trained and creative, with magic herself. If we assume the average unicorn is capable of feats on her level, it just doesn't really track well with all of the nothing most other unicorns accomplish in this universe. (Do they ever really do anything other than make force-fields and maybe the occasional laser?)The main things in show that are considered "powerful" as far as unicorn ability go seem to pretty much just be, "How much mass can you levitate at once" and "Can you teleport".Rarity struggles lifting very heavy objects, though she can if she needs to (Ending of the End), but she's quite adept at moving multiple smaller objects at once. Moreso than pretty much any other standard unicorn, but again, she's most of our basis for what a standard unicorn is.Rarity never teleports herself, but she is shown as capable of teleporting clothing on or off of ponies. Maybe it's harder to teleport living creatures, but still, I feel like realistically, this must at least be somewhere down the skill tree from teleportation.Other things I think are noteworthy:-She's capable of grand illusions, despite it only being perhaps adjacent to her talent (unless we think this is non-diegetic?)-She's capable of perfectly mending a broken wagon wheel. While on a much smaller scale, of course, this is essentially Twilight's amazing magical feat in Mysterious Mare-Do-Well.-Sometimes she can just instantly create components or entire dresses from just fabric. Why are the implications of this for her career never addressed?-When given creative powers (Power Ponies, arguably Inspiration Manifestation, Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep), she generally adapts quite quickly, and is shown to be capable of ludicrous feats. To me, the most standout thing is when she sews up the hole in the dream world the Tantabus makes. Based on how quickly it's glossed over, and how no one ever really mentions this moment, it seems like we're supposed to think nothing of it beyond "dream powers", but Luna establishes in the episode herself that only she should be able to fix the tears. I feel like this has huge implications about Rarity's capabilities!Personally, I feel like in-universe, Rarity has to be at least a 90th percentile magic user.

I've always felt those two were just a little bit closer to Twilight than the others.)

I think one of the reasons I fell in love with Rarity so quickly is because Tabitha St. Germain understood Rarity in her entirety almost immediately. Whereas the other VAs needed more time to properly "get into character", so to speak, Rarity was fully-realized and "tangible". That "realness" meant I could fall in love with her because she was a real pony, and not just a cartoon horse.I think Rarity's monologue of despair in Sisterhooves Social is what really sealed the deal for me, but that was so long ago...
