I'm not asking you to weigh the pros and cons and decide whether it's a good thing or a bad thing overall. I'm asking if it's a prize basically. Twilight says she's grateful for the things that she's earned, implying that becoming an alicorn princess was indeed a reward, not a duty. It doesn't seem to me like it was being treated as a position of power at first. It's not like it was thrust upon her because she's the one who would do the most good with the position. She didn't even have any training. She got it for completing one of Starswirl's spells. Celestia, Cadence and Luna also got it as a reward for "accomplishing some great princess-worthy deed". Twilight only became the Princess of Friendship after defeating Tirek. But at first she was just the princess of nothing in particular. The real reason she got it is because Celestia loves her. So it begs the question, is it really fair that Twilight is an immortal alicorn and Starlight isn't? You don't give prizes to those who would do the most good with them. You give prizes to those who deserve them. Starlight is a better magic user than even Starswirl the Bearded was. And even if we're just going by the specific task that Twilight did in Magical Mystery Cure, Starlight is still easily better than her. Starlight has complete control over cutie marks, she could do what Twi did in her sleep, by herself. Meanwhile Twi literally needed fucking help. From her friends and from the book. So if Celestia gave it to Twilight as a reward, and no one's giving it to Starlight, it kind of feels like Twilight believes she's better than Starlight. Like the princesses are saying Starlight deserves to die one day but they don't. And that really makes me sad. And this might sound immature but technically the princesses are cheating.
>>
>>43053523
Since Twilight sings about about not being ungrateful for what she has earned in the same song that's all about her complaining about not having any major responsibilities, it means that she IS enjoying the perks of being an immortal alicorn, and that serving Equestria is an additional privilege that she wants Celestia to grant her. Which means that being an alicorn cannot be the same thing as duty, right? Which means canonically it's just a reward, and that Celestia is playing favorites by not giving it to Starlight. Ergo, Sunbutt is a big unfair meanie and Twi is a stuck up nepo brat who thinks she's better than everypony else. Technically it means she thinks she's better than her own friends too. She never even asked Celestia to turn the mane 5 immortal as well. But for Starlight it's even worse because she has no excuse.

Why not? Just like with punishments, there are many theories of what prizes are and what purpose they should serve. I'm sure there are people out there whose intuition of correct and proper prize-giving is described well this way.
That being said, it's not why Celestia granted Twilight alicornhood. It happened because late seasons Celestia is batshit insane.
>she could do what Twi did in her sleep
But can she explain how she does it? Twilight is a scholar. When she discovers new magic, it gets published and becomes a gift to all ponies forever. Starlight's tricks my be more impressive in the eyes of an unwise spectator, but they have no future as they can only be used by Starlight and will die with Starlight.

Okay, OP. by now anyone who is calling us "glimmerniggers" will have hidden/filtered the thread, so we can talk in peace now.
Sorry to have "tricked" you like that, but it was unnecessary-albeit-not-unnecessary, at-the-same-time.
You see, if they thought we were discussing Alicorn glimmy, (or the possibilities thereof) we would have gotten auto-saged (by the mods) and spammed-to-death (by the sharty) so this unnecessary (to you) but a-necessary-evil (to me). But that's why I posted (her). Because I like her, too.
And I want her to become an alicorn
(someday)
but two reasons while I am here of why I think that it won't happen:
(one): Glimmy doesn't really have the time left.
>The show ended-it's over
>What now?
G5 kind of "screwed-the-pooch" (literally) and gave us nothing real in semblance to Starlight, or relevance to her fate/whereabouts after the flood of whatever happened that changed Equestria for the whole. So, we don't know.
But in the time the show did have, they didn't really flesh her out enough/give her enough adventures to see fit to make her an alicorn. It would've seemed untimely, seen as rushed (somehow even more than Twilicorn) (if that were possible).

>continueed
(two): (2):
>reason no. 2:
Glimmer has no friends-ships lessons from Celestia.
This might seem unimportant but seeing that a relative to Twilight (Cadance) and Twilight Sparkle herself were the only two alicorns we see having "earned" that right, in the show, it would make sense that Celestia would not, herself, make Glimmy into an alicorn.
Twilight Sparkle would, at her own behest, have to make the decision, since the princesses "retired" (retarded-ask the writers about it)
>Anyways
TL;DR
Starlight Glimmer deserved it, but
>the show was cut short
and
>Twilight Sparkle probably would take Glimmy away from Sunburst (her love), just like Twilight herself had to be taken away from her family at Canterlot at the beginning (of the show).
I don't think Glimmy would go for it.
That's my thoughts.
As for your questions:
>It doesn't seem to me like it was being treated as a position of power at first. It's not like it was thrust upon her because she's the one who would do the most good with the position. She didn't even have any training. She got it for completing one of Starswirl's spells. Celestia, Cadence and Luna also got it as a reward for "accomplishing some great princess-worthy deed".
Yes and no.
Twilight sparkle's very existence is far-and-beyond Starlight's, unfortunately. Because she's an Element of Harmony, it's a given that she would have to be the one to solve not only that issue, but many others.
By that point (MMC) she had helped:
>Defeat (and reform) NMM (with the Elements of Harmony)
>Defeat Discord (with the Elements (her friends) at her side, just like before)
>Defeat Queen Chrysalis (although Shining Armor-Cadence did all of the work, mostly(at-the-end-of-the-episode)) (and her friends helped her too, with this (although they didn't believe her at first that Princess Cadance (Queen Chrysalis, the disguise she had on) was a changeling.
>Defeat King Sombra (not with the Elements of Harmony this time, just like before it was "love" (the Crystal Heart, but love nonetheless) albeit it would've been impossible without Twilight and her friends at least attempting to help out with Princess Cadance as her and Shining Armor were tiring from keeping the bubble-shield up all that time
So we have a lot more villains defeated over three seasons, whereas Starlight herself started out a villain, and they were closing off her reformation arc by the time the Student Six entered, and the show was ended by the time she could've become an alicorn. Really, timing could've been worse, could've been better-timed also.
I just don't see her becoming a princess that quickly, much-as-it-might've-been-welcomed.
Thanks.
>You give prizes to those who deserve them.
Yes, she deserved it. No arguments here.
>Starlight is a better magic user than even Starswirl the bearded was.
True, but she's not an Element.
>>

>Twi literally needed f*cking help. From her friends and from the book. So if Celestia gave it to Twilight as a reward, and no one's giving it to Starlight, it kind of feels like Twilight believes she's better than Starlight.
I think it's more like Starlight needed more time. To become a princess, one must go through a lot of hoops, and decide "what" you must be the princess of. Cadance is the Princess of love, Twilight is the princess of "Magic" (although we know Starlight is better at magic, probably), Starlight would have to be... umm,... spellcasting? Who knows.
Anyways, like I explained, it would've happened but because of the power hierarchy, and how the writers "retired" the princesses, it would've felt more like a cop-out to just "make her a princess" to appease Starlightfags, and I would rather have it not be done at all, than to have it done poorly.
Retiring the princesses was a stupid decision; that leaves Twilight as the one to make Starlight an alicorn. And she might've. But we'll never know. If they had more time, it could've
happened.
But they didn't.
Sorry if that doesn't make sense.
As it turns out, the cartoon
side of things leaves a lot
of room for improvement,
"writing" not exempt from
this.

Sure they did. If not why didn't they correct Rarity when she said that? And why did Celestia say Equestria has never before known a natural-born alicorn? And why did Luna say she and Celestia didn't know shit about natural-born alicorns?
>why not?
Because then it wouldn't be a prize. And it's clearly portrayed as one, at least after Magical Mystery Cure. Idk how to explain it better to you.
>Just like with punishments, there are many theories of what prizes are and what purpose they should serve.
You should spend less time on the internet. It's making you sound retarded because words like "prize" and "punishment" only mean one thing. These "other theories" you're talking about just mean you want to talk about different words. Like you can say alicornification shouldn't be some trophy to be won, that's fine. But giving it to whoever would do the most good with it rather than who won it is called being practical, not giving a prize. Words have meaning.
>I'm sure there are people out there whose intuition of correct and proper prize-giving is described well this way.
Seems like you want to debate the ethics about who should be given which blessings. Not what this thread was supposed to be about, as even I think Twilight being given alicornification and Starlight not receiving it was the right call. This thread was more about me being sad about the extremely harsh and unfair nature of being a loser.
>It happened because late seasons Celestia is batshit insane.

>Meanwhile Twi literally needed fucking help. From her friends and from the book
This is kind of the reason why Twilight is the princess of friendship though. Like other anons have said, Glimmer is really powerful on her own and doesn't need help, but she's also less altruistic than Twilight even after her reform. That's more because Twilight becomes a fanatical zealot for friendship, though. But anyway, Celestia and Luna already have all the power they want. Twilight is special because a) she fulfilled a 1000-year-old prophecy and b) she is really strong AND relies on friendship.
>>43053778
>Because then it wouldn't be a prize.
Firstly, it could be considered a prize in the competition of "who has best demonstrated that they would use hypothetical power for good". Secondly, becoming a princess might have been a "prize", but a prize for a competition in which Twilight was always the only competitor. It's not that Twilight is showing that she's the best option over other ponies, but that she's proving herself ready and capable compared to past Twilight. Celestia obviously was never going to make anypony but Twilight a princess; it was just a matter of seeing if she was ready yet.
>This thread was more about me being sad about the extremely harsh and unfair nature of being a loser.
And of course you can argue that this is unfair to Glimmer, but like another anon said about monarchical titles, it was never meant to even be open to other ponies in the first place. Maybe Twilight saying "earn" is a little conceited, but the scholarly princess life (and being permanently mentally subservient to Celestia even after she "abdicates") would not be a good or fulfilling life for Glimmer, anyway.

I love Starlight Glimmer btw and think she's a nice and sympathetic character. I wouldn't say she deserved to become an alicorn because there should never have been any alicorns beyond Celestia and Luna, possibly Cadence.
>>
>>43053519
>Starlight has complete control over cutie marks, she could do what Twi did in her sleep, by herself. Meanwhile Twi literally needed fucking help. From her friends and from the book.
Anon... that's what the episode was about. Celestia didn't want Twilight to be a self-reliant magic obsessive, that's how she was at the start of the series. MMC was written as a series finale and it was supposed to be a final showing of how much friendship means to Twilight and thus why her studies are complete. Of course, I don't think it fully succeeds in that goal but it's very clear that 'needing fucking help' is not a flaw as far as Equestrian royalty is concerned.
