Hello hello! It’s that time again, time for another GameJam!In case you’re not aware. We’ve been doing Game Jams every 4 months or so, mainly at the board cons. Why at (board) cons? Well, to showcase them of course, the games will be played LIVE with an audience at the last day of the con. Current time is Sunday 29th of March 5 PM EST, check the anchor in case the time changes. If you’re interested in participating by submitting a game, please go to https://itch.io/jam/mlp-marecon-game-jam-horror-and-edge and join! Please don’t hesitate in doing so, having an initial number of interested people helps me calculate the time I’ll need for the panel. [spoler]If you for some reason don’t wanna make an itch account, you can email me the game at the mail at the end of the post[/spoler]Now, for the theme. Last time we did a restrictive one (which you can check out over here >>42778618). This time we’re going for a more thematic one: Horror and edge. Does this mean you HAVE to make horror games? I don’t know, that’s for you to interpret. You wanna make fun of the early fandom edginess? Go aheadWanna make a rainbow factory adventure game? Be my guestWant to experience the daily horrors ponies have to endure on their every day lives (aka: running out of sugar)? By all meansThe theme is for you to interpret and play around with. So, to recap:Theme: Horror/EdginessStream time: Sunday 29th of March 5 PM ESTJam link: https://itch.io/jam/mlp-marecon-game-jam-horror-and-edgeMail: littlehorseappreciator@proton.mePlease refer to the anchor for any announcements, updates in scheduling or any other important information.Previous Jam thread >>42997732Art by wapamario63. He’ll do a panel too, so check him out!Previous jam art by hotwater. Great artist too!
>>43112636https://u.pone.rs/hdrzkajb.webmWe've got a little trailer that I'll submit as a bumper. All it's missing is a few titlecards (maybe maek them slower at the end) and some end credits. If you've got some gripes about it, or you want to add anything, now's the time to say
Some previous games from jams:https://itch.io/c/4098468/pony-games-from-previous-game-jams-click-to-see-allI'm still thinking about making a page to conglomerate all the Games from the JamsI'm thinking a backup, I'd redirect to the itch pages and archive some games that would’ve been deleted, shill board devs, maybe write some stuff about current pone games. A "next Jam" countdown maybe?Yay or neigh? Would you guys like that or would that be a waste of time?
We're so back jam friends. Just little over a week now!
Bump before bed
Whatever the hell it is Im making is so shit i might just be to embarrased to even submit it. I defo overscoped the hell out of it and now im struggling to make it coherent, barely even any gameplay
Slapping a doe eyed blandly smiling mare on your computer class project does not qualify as fan creation. Your game has nothing to do with the show except for using the design of one of its flash rigs to signal how BASED and anon you are.>Chyeah, I jack off to mares, I love their mo- I mean snowpity!
>>43113862Don't worry anon. Normally the harshest critic is the creator. Publish it and learn from it. There's plenty of Anons in these things someone will like it
>>43113883What makes it a mare game is the intent behind it
Functioning Button API!https://u.pone.rs/kndbezfu.mp4
>>43114526Honk!That's basically all you need to keep us entertained. Game's ready to submit!
Rewrote half the rendering system AGAIN in order to handle dynamic-on-demand image updates. So I have functional test lights now.(For anyone who cares about sound effects:)https://u.pone.rs/hrtgsnqy.mp4Still doubt I'll be able to get anywhere near finished before the deadline, but I'll probably just move the dev progress to /create/ at that point.Anways, next task is getting the background panning functional, so that you can only look at one door at a time. Then I can get back to compositing characters & props into the rooms.
>>43113862I'm feeling the same way. I don't really like where I took the plot of my game.
>>43114861I can tell you, every time you waited for more than a second to flip that switch on, my heart skipped a beat!(yeah, I'm easily frightened, especially by jumpscares)You do everything using pygame?
>>43112642I think this would be quite helpful.
Look at what I found.Too bad it's not a real game...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI4y065gn1c
>>43115595>You do everything using pygame?Pretty much. Obviously the backgrounds & images are either pre-rendered or pulled from actual FNaF, but everything else is hand-coded using Pygame.Something I quickly realized though, is that Pygame is just a wrapper for the SDL multimedia interface, not an engine. So I'm basically coding an entire 2D engine frome the ground up. It's the main reason I figure I'm not going to finish anything playable before the deadline.
One week remains!
>>43116322NO WAY
>>43113862>>43115164Same boat. I made the mistake of trying to do a narrative-heavy game in a game jam where the games aren't supposed to be that long. I've had to trim so many great ideas to such an extent due to how much time I've lost to debugging. I feel mine is going to have a strong start that then descends into garbage. At least I get to use the "it's my first game released" excuse.
>>43116376My excuse "it's an alpha version", but I don't even know if I'll get *that* far.
>>43116066>Too bad it's not a real game...Nudge nudge. Wink wink
>>43116196I feel you.I have to rewrite resources management for pygame, and while not hard, it takes time that should be used for development.Oh well, no much choices with python, right?
>>43116861>Oh well, no much choices with python, right? Not that I'm aware.Granted I'm also still very new to programming, so I don't have super wide awareness of what's available.I did attempt some basic window stuff with Tkinter before the Jam officially started, but it's a little clunky, and from what I've heard it's also simple and not designed for games. I forget how I heard of Pygame, but it seemed a little more capable at first glance, so I went with it instead. And honestly, if I had to do an event-driven/UI-based program in Python later (which I probably will), it'd probably be better to use Qt-Python for that, regardless.
>>43117237I love tk because it's lightweight and available in almost any python distrib. But yeah, it's not at all designed to make games.Pygam have it's flaws, but at least, you got a graphical window, image, fonts and sound/music. Still some work to do, but a very good start.I use raylib in C, it's the same idea.
>>43116376Exactly same issue here. For some reason i thought it would be a good idea to make a story game and all I've got to show is a shitty "Prologue" that sets it up. Now im scrambling to just "steal" as many free assets as i can from the web to at least get /something/ out as it has no real gameplay yet because building all the systems alone took 2 weeks and now I've got barely any time to build the actual level to play. And I STILL have to rig and animate the damn pony models. >>43116553Pre-alpha, and barely adequate for a technical demo. God bless us all. Think of it as gaining experience in crunch time, we're real dev's now bois.
Does anyone have any recommendations for background music? I need two, something maybe a little eerie and something standard for normal sections.
>>43117892Lonebronyproductions has a ton of diverse music. For something eerie you can search for something with a string instrumenthttps://youtube.com/channel/UC2g_6W5o4sxS2OBH_EWEwlQ
>>43117892Honestly I just grab free music from pixabay. It's all pretty generic-sounding but for BGM in a game it works fine. If you want something fandom specific with a little more soul you could just scroll Bandcamp for brony artists, I'm guessing most of them probably wouldn't get too mad about having their compositions used in a fandom project, and if really you're worried about it you can always message them and ask. I think we're all kind of in the same boat here in that we have a limited amount of time to produce our games so cutting some corners on assets is probably expected. I don't think anyone is going to expect 100% original art and music for a game produced in 30 days.
It is always last minute Crunch. Every time.
>>43118350Adorable Time Crunch giving you a reality check
>>43117559I feel decently proud of my intro. I'm just worried people are going to find typos I might have glossed over. Right now I just need to complete a good amount of level design and finish a few more assets. Level design is where I fear I'll mess up the most, given the time I have left. That is something I don't have substantial experience with.
>>43117559I kind of wound up going the opposite way. I spent the first couple of weeks trying something more ambitious programmatically, but it's extremely buggy and I don't think I can get it working and also have a fully-playable game by the end of the jam. So I'm dialing back on ambitious gameplay and focusing on cranking out a more linear story-driven short game.
Up
Crunch burnout is getting real for me. I'm proud of my project, but at the same time so bored of it. I can't wait to be done.
>>43121063Yeah I can feel that. I ended up taking a break today. I just couldn't focus anymore so whats the point. Hopefully tomorrow I can hit it decently hard again.
>>43118350I haven't even started yet! I'm still stuck on the idea stage. Absolutely nothing coming to me
If this were a stealth game, she'd be very well-hidden
>>43121785rpgmakerGOD.....
>>43121785love me some rpg maker games
>>43112636REMEMBER to write your cytube name when you submit to game. It's to participate in the achievement system this year.I believe you're gonna participate to earn a little tiny something! It's a private field so don't worry sbout getting doxed.
>>43123110you're gonna wanna participate*I need to spell check these
Extend the jam until mlp con!
>>43123110>>43123636Is there a designated field for it in the submission process on itch, or do we have to include it with the game files somewhere?
My game is going to be really really bad but I promise I'll remake it in the future when I have the skills to make it as cool as the idea in my head is.
>>43125020Looking at the thread im pretty sure that's almost everyone's thoughts right now so you're not alone.
>>43125020As long as we get to see your ponygame run on the stream, I'll be happy!
>>43124422There's a designated field for it. Make sure it's the same name you use on cytube
Is it considered cheating if I reused the same framework I wrote during the last jam game? Reusing it probably saved 2-3 days.It does sound a little cheaty I guess.
up
>>43125536either nobody will notice, or nobody will mind
up up up!
Theres gonna be so many good games, I can tell.
>>43126567>good gameslollmao
THE GAME IS FINALLY DONE! Ahahaha, after a whole month of on and off work, and a week of crunch, I have finally FINISHED a game for once in my miserable life. The game is pretty janky and not that hard. There are probably a bunch of gamebreaking glitches I glossed over while frantically patching other gamebreaking glitches. I also don't have enough time to spellcheck a third time. Now I just need to upload it to Itch. There are a couple of deployment options (Windows, Mac/iOS, and web). I assume Windows is still the standard deployment, but is the web version how I'd be able to get the game to run in a browser, like most resource-light games on Itch?
There's a massive tonal shift in my game. It started out trying to be semi-serious but over the month I eventually started doing dumb jokes. This is a mess.
>>43125536I guess that could count as re using code. As long as it's a different game from the original you pulled it from you know? Amd by that I mean low effort stuff like swapping out enemies and player sprites and calling it a new game
>>43128107At most I scripted a distance detector and some behavioral loops. I take it my massive collection of plugins and usage of the RM runtime package assets are fine?
>one hour to page 9The schizo is back. Just wonderful.
>>43128128Using pre existing assets is also fine. Some people may say that making everything from scratch is part of the Game Jam experience. But I don't think we should be so strict
Screen panning has been implemented.(Along with light flickering.)With sound:https://u.pone.rs/uhfsdwhx.mp4I think I am FINALLY at the point where I can go back to working on renders.(I'm so cooked, Anons... T_T)
>>43128737You still have two whole days, it's gonna be okay.I mean, I almost shat my pants just with you video here, so, yeah, I may be an easy target, but it's working 100% already for me.
>>43128737Ooo!Makes it feel like the real thing!Don't fret, anon! There's still... MULTIPLE days, left! We'll all get... SOMETHING done! Surely!
I got two endings to my game finished tonight. Hopefully I can finish up the remaining ones tomorrow.
>>43129296>Multiple endingsWhoa
Ah, finally. After a month of hard work, I can say that it's done. At last I can rest.
>>43129622It would probably help if I had posted the link.https://nth-moon.itch.io/city-to-the-south
It's gonna be very close. What is the penalty for finishing after the deadline? I swear I haven't put off the whole game until the last week, but it's an ambitious idea and I'm worried that I won't be able to finish before 1:00 am on Friday.
>>43129623Anon, maybe I just did something wrong, but there might be a slight issue.
>>43130113Okay I fixed it on my end. I ended up just copying Step_Grass.ogg and duplicating it and renaming it to Step_Stone.ogg and I got past that screen.
>>43118350>laying tired in bed with Time Crunch, after barely finishing your project before deadline together
Alright, I'm finally ready to get started on my game
>>43129628Oh anon, the CRUELEST OF FATES AWAITS YOU... Of having your game shown last.I'd normally say that late games would be under threat of having their times reduced or not shown at all. But we've got a good ammount of free time after the panel, thanks to cytube 3 being created. But yeah, less punishment this time round. That and you get a different achivement. That said, I recommend every other dev try to get it before the con starts so you can actually enjoy the thing! And over polishing a game is normally not good either.I'd normally say to not get so ambitious, but I'm not one to try and cut off your wings. You guys do you.Just try to not get yourselves burned out of pone or game dev. Make sure you actually enjoy crunching!
>>43130182could it be ok if we make a submission on the deadline and then make a revised build, say 12 hours to a day later?
>>43130418Yeah, if your game is playable then yeah it counts as an on-time game. You can upload it and polish it later.I normally download the games on sunday to try to have the most up to date versions. So if you update it on Sunday please let me know
>>43128957>>43129180I don't think y'all understand just how little of the game is actually built. So far I have a grand total of 2 animatronics composited into 1 room (the office). I still need to composite 2 more into the office. In addition, I need to add an average of 3 characters present in at least 7 more rooms.Beyond that, the (security) camera system is still nonexistent, and none of the characters' AIs have been started. There is a reason the window title says "Office Idler 1000" right now.
>>43130113Thank you for letting me know! I'm so sorry for letting this happen. I've updated the game and it should have no more missing audio.
Yep. It's gonna be four games
>>43130788It will be at least 5. My game is done and in a submittable state, I just want to make some last-minute edits. I also suspect there's going to be a bunch of submissions in the last couple of hours.Worst comes to worst, I just made a visual novel so my game has a total play length of a little over an hour. It gets pretty nonsensical towards the end and I don't know how much actual entertainment value it amounts to, but if OP badly needs to fill time during the panel. he can always just save mine for last and run out the clock that way.
>>43130788I'm crunching the shit out of mine rn, the next 24 hours are gonna be nothing but getting the damn level done. Its almost in a state I could call playable. Still a lot is missing especially in the animations department but I accepted the fact I wont get it all done. >>43130826> I also suspect there's going to be a bunch of submissions in the last couple of hours.Very much this.
>>43130788A couple more hours to at least make this playable.
>>43130835Looks spooky, anon. Is it a horror game?
>>43130826Is Ren'Py just as dogshit as others describe it? is it bad at compressing audio & images?
>>43130855I am very much aiming for that, Plan was that depending on the type of person you are. It could either be horror for you- or the ponies around you. Alas the game will end after introducing the final mechanic which is right as the horror bits begin. At least for now.
"Later on, she even founded her own religion.""It was called Judaism.""That's when I had to finally step in and do something about her."
>>43130891It works well enough for what it does. I like it because you can jump pretty seamlessly between python and its internal scripting language, and it doesn't have a lot of interface to mess with. You basically just write your script, make sure your assets are in the right folders and launch your game. If you want a lot of custom functionality it's relatively easy to set up if you know python, otherwise you can just use the basic setup it gives you as-is and have a quick VN up and running in a few minutes without having to do much more than write dialog. I don't have a ton of other things to compare it to I guess, so your mileage may vary.
pre-bedtime page 8 bump
Got some work done on the camera map tonight.Dunno how that's actually going to look in-game though. It's rather tall, which might take up too much screen real-estate...
If I make a game, but the screen shows a cute pony and the loading bar is stuck, does it count as horror?I mean, it's horrible when you game doesn't work, right?
>>43131558Isn't it part of the thrill? Not being able to see everything at once?
We gotta extend the Jam for another week. I just started.
if showtime is on the 29th, couldn't we extend the deadline a day or two?
>>43132017Yeah. You can submit the games on the weekend, but they'll be counted as late games. As I explained here >>43130182 when you submit a late game, it'll be played last.IF your game is in a playable state, you can submit it today and poilish it over the weekend.Again. I recommend finishing your games by today so you can enjoy the con!
I suggest you actually take your sweet time playing and replaying these games if you want more attention.I know you'll give each game 15 minutes each instead of 3 minutes each. I suggest you extend yourself over 3 days. 1 day you play it as a complete beginner that misses out on all the stuff, 2nd and 3rd day you actually bother playing like you're the developer who knows all the secrets and you actually finish each game.
>>43132296>implying any of them have that amount of depth
>>43132296I think the current format is fine
I still need to find music!
>>43132417>>43117975Has a good selection imo
Base of the map is done.
Yaay, I have a valid release candidate. I'm gonna spend the last few hours trying to make an arcade game for my arcade machine.
I spent whole month thinking about what kind of game I should make... and then I made dumb Luna game clone in an hour last minutes before the deadline.
My game has to be a late submission
Sorry OP, I couldn't do anything playable.I will enjoy watching and playing your games Anons!>>43132834At least you did something
>>43132980cmon make some quick top down rpg maker esque horror game in few hours it's doable
Not super proud of this game or the theme I chose for the story, but I finished it.
Um?? Where all the games?
REMINDER TO LATE SUBMISSIONSAfter the original deadline closes. I'll open the Jam again so that people are able to submit late games. This time around, late games will simply be shown last. It'll only affect the order the games are played in.>>43132980Come on anon don't give up, you still have a couple of days until Friday. I'd much rather you enjoy the con, but if you feel (and want) like crunching, then you've got the chance.
To any Anon rushing to finish their game, I believe in you. Go get her done.
>>43133066>a couple of days until Friday>he posts at 9:00pm on ThursdayDon't get high on your own copium, OP
At last. I am free. Gonna take a long break now and then make it into a proper title. The groundwork is set.
yo, anyone else still crunching rn?
>>43133315I already submitted my game, but 'm thinking about doing a minor visual update after the timer's done
>>43133315I's drawin sprites and coding an inventory systemThe core systems are mostly done, and then it'll be time to make it actually a game
>>43133315I am still crunching! I'll try to submit a technically "functional" game before the deadline and I'll add the rest of the visuals tomorrow
one minute to go lads we can do this
>>43133487ngl it's so funny watching all the submissions roll in in the last minutes of the jam deadline
>>43133490Whoever was number 17, that was a hero move.
>>43133487And... 17 entries on time.>>43133493that's what happens when you start 3 hours before the deadline
>>43112636AND TIME'S UP.As promised, I've re opened the Jam, but games that are uploaded as of now, will be counted as late and be shown last.Games who have been submitted can be modified and retain their "on time" status. Also, remember to tell me your cytube name so you can participate in the achivement system this year!>>43133496>SpoilerYOU GUYS ALWAYS DO THIS!But I'm happy you managed to get something done anon
>>43133493>2 minutes before deadlineI salute you anon. Reminds me of school online assignments
>>43133278Shut up anon. You know I meant to say Sunday
>>43133490The cope paid off
I forgor to put my cytube name, is there a way to add it without resubmitting the whole project?
>>43134252Can you edit your submission? If not just email it to me with the name of your game. Email is in the OP.
I think the Jam achivements will be manually, so it might be a bit until you get yours. If you wrote your cytube name when submitting your name. If not, email me it.
We should continue bumping the thread until at least the panel, right?
>>43135489Yeah that'd be ideal. After the panel you can let it die.I want anons to be able to easily find the Jam page
>>43135489>>43135605This. I need the ego boost from having an entire con look at something I did
>>43132987>>43133066That's really nice that you allow participant to be a bit late.Unfortunately, I'm not at home this week end, so I can't do anything. But I should have worked more on my game earlier, it's entirely my fault for not planning better.I will enjoy the panel recording latter next weekGood luck for the achievements to all the participants!
morning bumpa
Are there really people who can make functional games in just under a week? I've spent a whole month on mine and still crunched in the last two weeks (balanced with having a full time job. My sister is also a babysitter and kept bringing two kids over here and pulled us in on watching them). How do people do it? Is it just because they made simpler games, have more free time, or just a skill gap?
>>43137609A week is short but doable. Would the game be very polished? Nah, but it would be playable and maybe fun.
>>43137609all of the above.
>>43137609Well, game jams are often only 2 days long
Monthly jams soon! The fun has been tripled.
Sometimes I forgot that t72b it's a fellow anon
How's the crunch going anons?
>>43139637Submitted on time in whatever state it was in when the deadline hit. Took the weekend to actually enjoy the con. I needed it. Great con so far.Godspeed to the one's still working.
>>43139637Don't talk to me about the crunch. I haven't even been able to work hardly 4 hours today because I have a big school assignment to do as well.
>>43139637I will crunch until I get crunched
>>43139637I used the time extension we were given to update my game with some features I felt were missing.Version 1.2-Added HP bar to GUI (previously the only way to see HP was in the menu)-Completely rewrote cutscene 4-Added new CG and sprites-Optimizations made in office building and to chase scene-Game can now be run from Itch.io page
>>43139637I'm not crunching. Even if I had crunched, not enough could be finished in a single weekend. So I'm just continuing at the same pace I was.To me, this was less about finishing on time (though that would've been nice), and was more about finally starting to ACTUALLY MAKE a game I've wanted to create in some form since Day 1 (Night 1, actually) of discovering ponies over 11 years ago.Even for this 2D Alpha, and my limited skillset for doing the graphics, I wanna make something that feels decently polished, and has the full gameplay loop I envisioned.I will finish, but I'm going to take my time, so that I can deliver a quality game I actually enjoyed making.
>>43140396Well anon. WHEN you finish it I'll be happy to make space for it for one of these Jam!>>43140212Nice!AS A REMINDER:I'll open a jitsy chat for the devs and hide the link in the itch page. For whoever wants to join the panel and talk about their game. I'll probably show them in the order that was submitted, so keep that in mind
>>43140446Is the cytube link going to be r/Zaifer like last time? Also, I'm a dev, how may I get access to the chat? Where would it be hidden on the itch page? Thank you and I'm looking forward to talking to you.
>>43130513Hello, I made Violence is a Last Resort. If you haven't downloaded the game yet, please download the up to date version. I just made an additional update.
>>43140522It will be on marecon's cytube 1. Check the thread for access
https://youtu.be/e056R97svz8?si=C5NzqTXS3DYn9CWFSurely you've submitted whatever you planned to submit, and not crunching when only a few hours remain. Surely you've learned to be proactive after all these years. Right, anon?
>>43141216yeah, I'm looking at the submissions tab and don't see any new games from between the original deadline to now. I wonder how many people are still crunching or have genuinely given up.
>>43141245What are the ratios of joined to entries usually like?
>>43141302We're below average. It's unusual, we've normally had 70% of participants make a gsme. Based on my calculations, we've got around 5 games in limbo. Either beingn crunched as we speak or their devs given up
>>43141320I think a lot of people overscoped their projects this time, the extra time was a blessing and a curse.
>>43141332My dozen-abandoned/in-limbo-projects ass was going to make the Daring Do game three times longer before I came to my senses and started cutting out most of the level concepts and plot points. I could have so easily joined them.
>>43141320>>43141332Yup, had to give up on making the deadline for this jam. I still want to finish the game, but I liked the idea too much to make the kinds of compromises and shortcuts I needed to make something playable. Good luck to all the people still in the jam!
URGENT:AJ SHOOTER DEV YOUR GAME PAGE IS STILL PRIVATE! PLEASE UPDATE
just updated necrogotchi
>>43141827I just wanted to give you a warning about my game, Anon Fucking Dies. You might need to mute the music for the introduction. It has a 8bit version of a popular song, I even pitched it down 3% but I just don't want to nuke the stream.
>>43141320F in the chat for everyone who didn't make it.
This jam was a lot quieter than usual! Are horror games just harder to make than previous themes?
>>43142610horror is the hardest genre to do, alongside comedy. this plus a longer deadline encouraging overscoping and it being a turbulent time of the year just added up. i liked it all nonetheless
Maybe we should have a rule about making sure your game works after exporting. It's surprising there's this many games that need troubleshooting.
>>43142628Is it the hardest? Feels like so much of the content mill slop for the past decade and a half has been cheap indie horror games
>>43142665Half of it was zaifer just not knowing how computers work
I was falling asleep as the stream was going under but I heard something about a new website but for pony pony games?
Already looking forward to the next jam already, these and the stream are always so fun.
>>43142801Yeah. I'm looking into making a website to promote and inform anons about current and old pony game, the jams. Probably a backup for games from the Jams.Probably write summaries of the game? Jams countdown? I don't know, but I think it'd be cool to have a place to go to inform yourself about pone games and current happenings.Fimfic's guides come to mind, maybe we could also include guides to get pony models to work on 3d engines? Free pony models to download? Redirect to free recommended assets?I'm still in the planning phase, but it's something that'd be good to do. If you've got any suggestions, feel free to mention them here
>>43142890I love that idea actually. Everyone else got their own shit, drawfags, writefags etc. Having a place where people can make/share/help each other bloom into something great. Everyone is mostly doing their own crap but this could help with collaboration within the fandom.Although the nature of the media will most likely mean that our group will be fairly small. Can't imagine we have that many dev's still in the fandom, even less one's willing to commit to something so niche
Any clues what the next theme might be?
>>43143333No idea. But I think it'll be a restrictive theme, like the one button one. People seemed to like that one. What do you think?
>>43143446Next theme:No buttons
>>43143446Restrictive themes can be pretty fun. But coming up with the actual theme is harder though.
>>43143485I googled a couple ideas. Here are some good ones. We can discuss what remains of the thread on the next Jam's theme:Lose to WinCan't control the protagonistOne Minute gameplayNo MovementOne lifeLoops
>>43143532I don't think you can go wrong with these. They all seem pretty fun to work around. "No movement" already gave me a few ideas. One minute gameplay might lead to more arcadey games.
>>43143576>One minute gameplay>This time we get 6 weeks to work>Every jammer scopecreeps the fuck out of one minute>No games get publishedI can see it now
So I decided to try out the browser-playable ones tonight. (Not looking into the NSFW ones without further info, though; I don't wanna suddenly have clop shoved in my face.)First one I tried was the Celestia cake game, and I don't know why, but I kept cracking up over the Homer scream on the death image.Only Flesh is actually pretty good, though the magic gets depleted so quickly that any regen and efficiency upgrades are basically necessary to actually survive beyond level 2 (I burned through magic so fast I unironically thought the parasprites just had ridiculously tiny hitboxes at first).Decided to move on after I got to the first "true dark" level and died. (View was too limited, because even with a bunch of regen and efficiency, I still couldn't waste more than a second of magic on the light).Spooky Stories is cute and well-polished, though I felt like it was leading up to a main segment that never came, unless said segment was the mine one and I completely missed something in it. That said, I'd be interested to take another look if there was a content update to this one.Bunny Rescue... :(Was cute and simple, though did require some tricky precise movement. Not sure what all those spiky spheres were doing in the Everfree, though.Ultimately though, I don't think Fluttershy would actually be that scared of dead bunnies. She's fed fish to weasels; she knows the cycle of life. (Comics even imply she has a vore fetish, so...eh.Cheer and Warm has an interesting start (and yeah, I went and downloaded the local version for this one since the online one was having nasty graphical issues). Magic system is a bit clunky though; sometimes objects were practically stuck in place, and other times they moved super freely. My hand actually hurts a little from gripping the mouse so much. Not sure I did the drawbridge correctly, as I think I got it jammed against the log without actually slipping the log through the slot. So, yeah, got through the whole thing, and I'm still not sure I understand how the magic system is supposed to work. (Also discovered that prop surfing exists...)Regardless though, looking forward to more! (I'm a sucker for ponies in dire situations.)City to the South seems cool, but uh...is the game just supposed to end in an unwinnable situation? I literally can't exit the office building once the tentacle blob monsters spawn. Lot of potential with it though; I hope it gets fleshed out! Also, Bug:After you've been inside the auto shop and talked with the professor, you can't re-enter, as it just fails to load the professor's sprite and softlocks you.Overall I've enjoyed seeing everyone's games so far! I'll have to try more next weekend.
>>43143532>>43143576>No movementWould be very funny if I finished Five Nights at Pinkie's while that one is going on and submitted it as an honorary entry, since being stuck sitting in the office technically fits the criteria. :P
>>43130843Loved your game anon. Marefriend is a cutie. Maybe add more stuff to the game? Like enemies, guns etc. Could be fun to play as marefriend too.
>>43143880>City to the South seems cool, but uh...is the game just supposed to end in an unwinnable situation? The exit to the office building is on the second floor
Nice panel, OP, thanks to the devs as well. Could you link the song used in the trailer? Someone else asked for it in con threads too, but that one was easy to miss.
>>43143880>Not looking into the NSFW onesI don't think theres any clop scenes in any of the games this time so you're probably good.
>>43144447First song:https://youtube.com/watch?v=WtQ1wFRDjvcCredits song:https://youtube.com/watch?v=xlcEiREWLRY
>>43144541Sweet, thanks!
>>43143671Nah, this time we'll go with 3 weeks of Jam time, with 1 week of heads-up. So one month before mlp con you can check the catalog for it.>>43143886If you finish it before the next showcase you can submit it and we can then check it out together, as an honorable mention. Even if it's not on theme. This goes fore very dev that did not finish their game on time
I just want to thank everyone who submitted games. I'm slowly working my way through them and I love them all. I can't wait to see what you guys make next time!
Has the stream recording been uploaded to Cytube yet?
It's always such a strange feeling after these jams. Going from a project you're working on daily to just being finished.
>>43144451As far as I remember on the panel, there was not a single instance of any NSFW. Maybe some mild spooky jpegs. Then again, we didn't really play most of the games to their end.>>43145134Im defo gonna keep working on mine. I have big plans for it. Just gonna need to take a few days to avoid burnout, ponder over ideas etc. It has big potential.
>>43142890I think this is a great idea. Ideally something like fimfiction but for games.
>>43142890It would be lovely if it isn't too much work or expensive to run. Maybe a custom tag system would be cool so you could tag games by mares who appear.
Pros & Cons of a game design document contest:Lots of no devs or weakdevs practicing their skills when sharing their project ideas with others. Some might be really bad at it and write just tags and crappy descriptions with no imagery. Those who can code and bugtest might as well just make the game instead of writing 50 pages of game design. Those who can code but have no ideas will welcome the design document as long as its vision and details are clear and isn't overscoped or is at least modular without a gameloop requiring more than a few elements to make it playable.A way to test your existing game design writing skills is to take an existing gamejam game and write a detailed document of it and see how accurate it is to the actual game. This way it also tests game design theory like for example the gamedev behind the woodcutting & changeling stealth game how he imagine his stealth to work like in theory vs what his game framework's actual stealth mechanics offered him(lack of clarity if you're hidden, lack of clarity of what the changelings can and can't see.)Programmers who know how to program but suck at game design might use one of the game design documents assuming it is actually well written and not left up to interpertation and thus can be messed up mechanics wise. For example if this was a game design right now then I'd tell you this document competition needs to last 3 weeks with a 2 week pause before the gamejam competition in order to make it substanceful. If I didn't specify the time then you'd be hosting it during the game jam competition making it useless and making it eat time from the main coding event.>>43142890What about Equestria Gaming? Also 4chan is getting really bad with the massive fake ISP bans and these captchas.
>>43144649>3 weeks of Jam time, with 1 week of heads-upThat might be the sweet spot. Very excited for the next jam. And you just know no matter how long you give certain people will wait until the last minute to begin.
Sleuth Applejack is really cool but I couldn't get past either of the puzzles I think the rainbow one might be broken because I'm almost positive that I did it right I might just be retarded with the other door puzzle though.
>>43146182Rainbow one is fixed in latest version that was a fuckup on my end. And for the one after the guard try reading it out loud... or first word per lineSrry the puzzles were a little rushed. U can pretend the chef just couldn't verify ur results properly on account of her condition
>>43144821It's been uploaded to ponytube now with the chat.https://pony.tube/w/oneR12wc9M646mQL6GAhzB
Whoever commented I bought the QTE-plugin DLC – nope, I coded it in like 2 daysI bought a tileset for one of the last locations of the game and it sucked hard :<
>>43146392I can forgive the colorblind mare. Going to try the game again in a bit, I really like it. It has a lot of character anon, great job!
Someone messaged me an idea. Why let past games from Jams be left in the dust? Next con (mlpcon) I'll do a playthrough of some of the games from previous Jams. As a sort of revisit. It'll be a late night gaming session
>>43143880>After you've been inside the auto shop and talked with the professor, you can't re-enter, as it just fails to load the professor's sprite and softlocks you.Bug fixed. Version 1.3 is now live. https://nth-moon.itch.io/city-to-the-south/devlog/1475112/version-13There was a character that itch embeds forbid the inclusion of (%) that was in his sprite, so I had to do some reference reformatting. I thought I fixed the references, but turns out I missed other instances of him, making the game unfinishable on the web version. That was a massive fuckup.
>>43147359>getting zaifer gaming kino even when there's no jamThat is a wonderful idea! And there are so many great games throughout the jams that are a ton of fun to keep playing again and again. I'll be there to watch, for sure!
>>43144321Thanks! Nice art!Creepy marefriend will very likely make an appearance again when I make more pony games. My jam games are usually one-off then abandoned, but I might add more stuff if I feel like it; I currently have other larger projects.I was planning to add mines and/or sticky bombs; but in the spirit of Time Crunch, the opening cutscene, pipe bomb, stop sign, levels, and a few other things were all made 24 hours before the deadline.
>>43145671>Pros & Cons of a game design document contest:A major con is that the autism generated would be so dense that it would create a black hole and destroy the world
>>43147359That sounds very kino to watch. Really nice idea for a panel.
>>43148063That sounds like a big pro. There's nothing better than reading through dense autism in the morning.
Well. This'll be a shiot goodbye. The next con is in july. So... I'll see you guys in around a month oco
I think I will bump today
>>43149684How about we bump uglies and make a whole new anon
I'm finally getting around to slowly playing some of the games.THE KILLER gets a marefriend was a lot of fun to play. It's a slick game that controls well, and growing more and more proficient with the tools you have with every wave with feels good. The pistol feels a bit slow starting out, but once it starts to pierce it really pulls it's weight, especially since you keep it running all the time. And like anons have said: the marefriend is totally cute. The enemies are also very cute. In a way that is quite similar to the marefriend. Hmmm...And I would add that THE KILLER's sprite is also cute, and his butt turns real big and round in his walking animation. Shit. Maybe I'm just a hopelessly horny bastard. My Little Necrogotchi was super cute in every way.The dodging part feels good to control, and grows into quite a challenge. But since the thing it unlocks is new instruments for the bopping 8bit BGM, you are always supremely motivated to keep going!
