When I look at ponies, I usually try to think of them as living beings from Equestria; and I think an avatar is bad when it looks more like a 3D puppet someone dressed up with a ton of attachments than as something that could plausibly be an actual Equestrian pony.If you want to have a detailed feature like splotches, it doesn't mean it can't work, but the splotches alone are adding a LOT of detail where normal ponies don't have any, so it basically needs to be the single busyiest part of your design. Stylistically, yes, it's supposed to be Equestria-styled, but that's just as much (if not moreso) just because we're an MLP sim and people here like Equestria and want something that looks like it, than for any kind of continuity.I personally think of it as a kind of pony-style enclave that exists outside of any given universe. It's not in Equestria but it's inhabited by people who love Equestria and pay homage to it in architectural style, in customs and traditions and behaviour. That's probably the closest thing to reality. And of course anyone can RP their own headcanon, whether that be living in literal Baltimare on the coast of Equestria, or being a Crystal Princess living full-time in an embassy for some reason, or Xen's tabletop RP lore, or whatever desired, but none of them are the official canon I don't think.

It's meant to be loose enough to accommodate all those disparate headcanons, yet grounded enough that - if you take away everything else - it could still exist in the show. That's why we try to keep the permanent features broadly early-20th century like the show aimed to do, it's why we do things like strap big stonking magic crystals to the sides of trolleys to explain their power, and so on. Being more explicit about it is something I've wanted to do for a long time.Obviously in a Doylist sense it's because we're copying the aesthetics of the show, but that's not what's happening from an in-world story perspective, and one of my long-term goals is to be more explicit in that fact. Currently it's only kinda sorta hinted at, by the existence of adjacent features in Equestria like Horseshoe Bay.

The actual population and set of headcanons is such a mish-mash that I didn't think there was any kind of official aspiration to be part of Equestria even in a Watsonian sense. Being a sort of multiversal enclave of Equestria enthusiasts makes perfect sense to me, trying to be a location in Equestria that for some reason has insane multiversal convergeance sounds odd.

>>43130122>a Crystal Princess living full-time in an embassy for some reasonWhen I was pondering the "headcanon lore" for Flurry and the Crystal Embassy my rough line of thinking went something like;Flurry Heart, upon coming of age after the finale timeskip, would be sent out beyond the borders of the Empire to practice lowstakes diplomacy and act as the cultural face of the nation. It's a chance for her to grow and make her own decisions beyond the rigidity of the Crystal Court, likely a welcome reprieve after growing up under such overly protective parents. I also like to imagine she'd be staying at different embassies across multiple nations within the United Ponies Alliance and beyond, not just Baltimare/Equestria, moving between them as needed.
An actually enjoyable part of a dream I had recently was that tealove flooded the sim and I nearly drowned under the weight of the water rushing over and the 40-ton waterfall ensuring I couldn't swim up, and when I finally surfaced spluttering and coughing all I heard was "skill issue".But then I had to go back to work making tapestries for nobles so the dream went downhill after that.
