Anon who was inquiring about LTO tape here: I ended up buying an LTO-6 tape drive for around $300. I've not even got all the parts yet to try it out and I realize I've already made a mistake. So here's a bit of a PSA for others potentially interested in tape. Tape cartridges come in both R/W and WORM variants. You cannot format a tape with a filesystem if it is WORM. I was hoping to format with LTFS, hoewever I had purchased WORM carts. Glad I only purchased two to start out with. Also another quirk of the gen 6 LTO tapes in particular is that they can also come in two different chemistries. Metal particle or BaFe. BaFe is supposedly better and is what's used in newer generations. I'll probably post some more updates when I get things actually working.
>>43129375Write Once Read Many?
>>43129381Yes. I suppose I didn't notice the label at first, and even the R/W tapes I've read that the only way to delete is to reformat the whole tape. Which is fine. I don't plan on rewriting them. But I do want to be able to mount the tapes as a filesystem. They also have hardware write protect switches which is nice.
>>43129413Why are you using tapes for that, why not just use M-Disc BD-Rs (or if it's small enough, DVD-Rs, they're somewhat sturdier even)? It's probably even more cost effective despite the fact you need more discs.
>>43129529>somewhat sturdier
>>43129576Do you even know what M-Discs are?
Dbooru is down. Time to capitalize on this advantage.
>>43129670>start noticing some behind-the-scenes fuckery>it goes down while I'm digging up evidencethey're in my walls they're in my walls they'RE IN MY WALLS
>>43129678You're starting to notice just now? There's always been behind the scenes fuckery. It's to be expected when you have a site so big with so many different kinds of people... And admins and mods with a clear agenda they have to keep hidden
>>43129529I plan to store around 50TB. Even with the largest 128gb discs, that's still 400 discs. Which is a lot compared to the 20 LTO-6 tapes it would take to store the same data. At around $12.5 per disc, that's $5000 plus the cost of a drive that can write those discs. Whereas with LTO-6 you can buy a pack of 20 for around $400. Equipment wise the drive cost $300, a fiber channel card cost $12, fiber channel cable cost $12, and a cleaning cart for $20.
>>43129375You might be able to find a ponybro to take those WORMs off your hooves in /pts/: >>43095705
>>43129678Was it czu's Wikipe-tan quality thing?
>>43129529Optical media is painfully slow to write and labour intensive. A tape can store many TB (largest ones are like 30TB) and there is no need to swap to a different disc every hour or two. Plus it's way way smaller than a 100 disc, much cheaper overall. There is a reason why nobody is using optical media anymore.
>>43129926Well if you need to store that much tapes probably make sense.>>43130368Tape is painfully slow to write AND read. There's little use case for it besides storing very large amounts of data that you plan to keep in rest for 10+ years. Otherwise just buy a HDD and swap all data to a new one every X years. Cheaper and faster, and also more future proof since the media and drive are not separate from each other.
>>43130396>painfully slow to writeShow me an optical media which can write at 360Mbyte/sec.>slow to readShow me an optical media which can read 360Mbyte/sec.Seeking is slow, not read or write. And we are comparing to optical media not HDDs. Don't change the goalpost. But since you changed the goalpost: failure rate of HDDs are astronomically higher than tape. Because if it dies you lost all the data on it (eg head crash, platters scratched). If the tape is torn, you only lost a section. The file system on a tape is also designed in a way that if you loose a section, you only lost that section. Only exception is the catalogue (which you should always have another backup of just in case).
>>43130409Whatever, go spend thousands on something that is overkill for any home user's use case. Autism is a potent drug I guess.
>>43130396>Tape is painfully slowActually not so. LTO6 is supposed to transfer at around 160mb/s. That's fast enough that a hard drive may not always be able to keep up when transferring data to tape.
>>43130413>go spend thousandsLoL anon, have you checked prices lately?A 12TB lto8 tape cartage is about 75€, while a 12TB hdd is 400€, br dl (the cheap one which rots away in 5 years) is about 500€ for 12TB.Tape is cheaper after 120TB than br dl (which i remind you, you have to throw away and rewrite every 5 years), and cheaper after 180TB than hdds (which also craps themselves after every 10-15 year at best). Do the math. I included the cost of the tape drive itself (3500€) into the calculations.

Not to be posted on a Wikipedia article. I don't mind it being there, I was wondering if he gave the greenlight to post on Wikipedia.
>>43130710>which one of you did it?You do realize Commons logs are public, right? ^:)>>43130923>I think they need his permission to use itAt first, I also thought permission was required because the JPEG upload was labeled as CC0. However, that label was incorrect, and has since been fixed. Since the image incorporates a Wikipedia screenshot, it is a derivative work subject to Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. As a result, it must be licensed under those terms, and neither Czu nor the uploader can relicense it as CC0.>>43131015Though he wouldn't have been so WP:BOLD as to put it up there himself, Czu has graciously provided me with the original-quality file with the express permission to upload it to Commons in order to replace the JPEG. As previously stated, CC BY-SA 4.0 applies, and so the Wikimare drawing incorporating a Wikipedia screenshot is exempt from the usual copyright release process.

None of which I ever managed to read back after 3-5 years after I accidentally deleted a folder containing photos and I did not notice it for years. Plus every single magazine came with a CD or two every month.I would say the last time I used optical media was 10+ years ago but that would be untrue. Hospital gave the MRI scan to me on a CD this year. Had to go to the attic to find a sufficiently old (and working) machine which had a working CD drive in it. >>43129375BaFe's like, the best possible type of cassette chemically for archival (given you keep it far from magnetic sources in a metal box) what feels scammy is the WORM part because, unless of some tech or stuff I ignore about, a magnetic support can be erased and re-recorded a large number of times, until the tape wears out. which is why i enjoy magnetic storage for backups having an LTO tape on my PC from a server that does the job right, it's an originality.>>43129529when you have a chunk of TB to backup, it would take a few BluRays and organizing, I love optical too since it's a medium that will in some case outlive most of us. But in the idea, if you have backups of the past years, you just burn a new BD for the new uploads and comments. This also works! Both are decent, but yeah 6Tb for less than 50bucks, sounds smart.
>>43170328WORM isn't a "scam," it's designed for specific use cases like legal recordkeeping where the data must not be tampered with in any way. There is indeed nothing special about the tape in the cartridge, it's just about a) the low-level format and b) how it presents itself to the tape drive. But these are desirable things, rather than hindrances, if you're the target customers for WORM tape.

Zeit für a paar neue sachn! The Website archive is in the process of being fully moved over to archive.org. I recently resolved a persistent upload issue with their support team. This will free around 12TB of space. You can now find Tumblr, YouTube, and the Websites at https://archive.org/details/@iwiftpThe Image archives for Pony, Furry, and the Chinese animations are in the process of being fixed up and the download tasks being moved over to the new downloader instead of the 5 different pure bash scripts I wrote years ago and are 1000's of lines.New features include:- Proper usage of canonical site IDs- Support for all file types these sites allow in upload- Proper naming of main and auxiallry files , exempli gratia (name).api.json, (name).comments.json, (name).description.json, etc cetera- More useful handling of errors, retries, and so forth- Actual user interface- Built in de-duplication due to the use of content addressable storageAt some point it will switch over and greatly reduce the amount of space taken.
Tape Anon here. Starting to make some progress with the tapes. I think I may have changed my mind on LTFS. I really like that there are tools built directly into Linux (mt tar) to interface with LTO drives and I think I want to use them. Planning on making some simple bash scripts to make working with them a bit easier. My current quandary that I'm working on is appending data to tapes with content already on them. There are two different ways to accomplish this. You can use tar and append to the archive itself or you can use mt to advance to eom, write a file marker and create a new tar archive separate from the first. From what I read the first option is a bit more dicey in terms of getting it right and not corrupting existing data. So I'm thinking I will use the second method and write every file to it's own tar (supposed to be better for seeking as well). However this does complicate file extraction as I will need to iterate over all the archives on the tape, using mt in between to advance to the start of the next archive.

>>43180179The usual suspect is the panopticon. Surveillance moguls intentionally amplify everybody's neuroses. "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we are recording and reporting everything", right?Or it may be poor writing skills. When people have no confidence in their ability to clearly communicate their attitudes using words alone, they will naturally seek out other means. It's worse with nazis because glowniggers are trying their damnedest to cleanse this word of any condemnation now. I wouldn't know myself how to succinctly communicate the idea of "nazis, and I mean it in a bad way" to a mixed group of antifa-hating victims of project gladio 2.0 and people free of that brain worm. Asterisks may be too heavy-handed for me, but the struggle is real.Or it may be a broken feedback loop. You have old-fashioned languages that undergo renewal all the time, with people tabooing random words for made up reasons and pulling replacements out of their asses, and you have states and empires that force upon people hyper-normative languages that are constant in time in space. Something in people's souls may register the second type of languages as an anomaly and do what control loops do best: thoughtlessly put into overdrive everything that used to speed up the change of languages of the first kind. I don't know if it makes any linguistic sense, but it's a fun idea to play with.

More updates on the tape drive: Getting closer to having all my scripts done for working with the drive. I think the only thing left is to modify my writing scripts to store a log somewhere. For now I'm just gonna dump the output of tar to a text file somewhere. Then I can search through the logs to locate a file. In the future I might setup python/sqlite and put something together for better tracking. For the most part I should be able to track things with regular labels anyway.3d printed a case for it. Basic, but I think it looks nice. Also got some spring isolators to reduce the vibrations it produces. They work quite well, much better than the rubber/silicone ones. I'm probably going to 3d print a bracket to relocate them to the side as I need to reduce the height of it a bit to fit.I hope to post my tape scripts at some point. See if there's anything people think I'm missing. Also as a starting out point if anyone else here decides to try out tape. Hopefully soon, maybe even this weekend. We'll see.

>>43183798Hi, make sure you have a big ass fan in the back of that. They get hot, if they get too warm it'll mangle a tape, and destroy itself. When I say big fan, I mean 4500 rpm server fan, not a 1000 rpm noctua. It should sound like a low speed leaf blower to have enough airflow though the front grill. The fan must pull air through the front, and push out the back.
>>43184270
>>43184850To be honest I haven't noticed the drive getting very warm, but then again I haven't done any extended writes yet. I've written maybe 300gb at most to a tape. The drive itself is mostly closed off at the back. What does get hot is the fiber channel card. I'm for sure going to need at least a little bit of airflow over that. I will definitely do an extended test run to make sure temps seem alright on the drive though.
>>43184850>>43185420So I had it write data to a tape for an hour and the drive reported 71C, which does seem a bit warm. So I'll see about adding a fan to my case. I don't think the tape got that hot though. It felt maybe lukewarm when I ejected it. I pointed a laser thermometer around it and into the tape drive and the highest temp I measured was around 35C (95F), which is within the recommended operating range.
>>43185518The hottest point will be just the write head which is buried pretty deep in the drive tucked around some movement pins that pull the tape out of the cart. They can burn out, that's why they use a lot of airflow.
>>43185545I wonder if the tape head is heatsinked to the outer case? As I said on mine the internal drive cavity is basically completely closed off except for the cartridge hole. There's a thin channel that runs underneath where the electronics are and where the front vents lead to.I'm trying out your anti-recommendation with a noctua pressed to the front vent (It's what I have on hand). I guess I'll see if the temperature stays any lower on the drive readout.
>>43185545Also, here are my current set of scripts that I am using:https://pastebin.com/rzJH6c3CI still need to add some logging, but wanted to see if there's any other functions that might be useful to have or if there's anything boneheaded about what I've got. I would use ponepaste but they always seem to block my stuff as spam ^:(
>>43185545>>43185565Alright, apparently an 80mm Noctua with a noise reducer is good enough to keep the temperature down. After 2 hours of continuous writing, the drive is only reporting an internal temp of 43C. That is within operating spec. And it'll probably do better when relocated to the back, closer to the heat producing components. I honestly didn't think the Noctua would do that much.

>>43198812Zizzy told in discord this was because the age verification law and he can't do anything about this.
This post is long overdue, but I've decided against copying Zizzy's strategy of "act first, think never". From the moment go, the very prospect of creating a "Derpi-lite" site as a solution to Derpigate was hubris made manifest: thinking themselves somehow superior to Derpibooru's ideological slant, Ponybooru's staff went on to craft a set of policies just as rife with potential for abuse, but with just enough counter-cultural trappings to lure in the most gullible reactionaries.Hiding lolisho even on a self-described "Everything" filter was a red flag. Coercing Shinodage into filing a takedown for the staff's commissioned colt-cuddling art[1][2] was a miscarriage of justice. But rewriting policy overnight to remove thousands of images with nary a word of discussion, warning, or explanation? I could hardly devise a more potent form of self-sabotage short of "rm -rf --no-preserve-root /".The worst part of all is that the policy in question was seemingly backdated: the current revision page claims it was added 20 months ago,[3] which gives it the appearance of having been present in a dormant state, and suddenly being enforced. Far from ideal, but the slightest bit defensible. However, looking at archived versions of that history page, one sees no mention of the policy in the exact same, 2024-08-18T17:17:59Z timestamped revision.[4] This is a fundamental distortion. It isn't just that Ponybooru set out to copy Derpi and created an even more dysfunctional governance model. It isn't just that its staff have shown time and again to care naught for the people and principles they're supposedly beholden to.It isn't JUST that on every level of operations and PR, the site has repeatedly shot itself in the foot. It's that Ponybooru's fundamental truth has collapsed. The very audit log that's supposed to prove the provenance of policy has been compromised, due to either incompetence, or some inscrutable impulse of a self-styled messiah.Ponybooru has long struggled with record-keeping. Its mod action log takes the form of a forum thread rather than an automated system, which combines the worst of both worlds: the appearance of transparency, with none of the reliability. It is only as complete and accurate as staff choose to make it, and it has not been updated once since this latest meltdown was initiated. Thousands of deletions without any public mention crystalize this crisis. With all that stated, I hope you understand why no future thread I create will falsely present Ponybooru as a viable alternative. From an operational standpoint, the site is now equivalent to Manebooru: an ill-conceived, ill-fated misadventure of the early 2020s.[1]: https://twibooru.org/3027548[2]: https://ponerpics.org/images/6759402[3]: https://web.archive.org/web/20260425100210/ponybooru.org/pages/rules/history[4]: https://web.archive.org/web/20250324222729/ponybooru.org/pages/rules/history

Would it be possible to do full-text searches of Ponepaste or Foalfetch? I know this sort of thing can be done with Elasticsearch or Solr, but I don't know how realistic it would be to actually deploy them.

>>43199853Y'know, I was an avid supporter of ponybooru. But after OC fiasco (twice!) and now this, I really do think that it's no longer the OP banner material. They lost the plot. Maybe keep in the list with a warning, but definitely remove from the banner. There are three reason to use an alternative site: 1) Policy allows to post more stuff than Derpi 2) No DNPs 3) Artists can trust that their images won't be artitrarily deleted. Ponybooru at this point lacks all three (with third being OC-owner can nuke artist's pics, even if under contract artist is legally allowed to post it. While different from derpi's political removals, it is still an arbitrary removal). So there's no point of ponybooru's existence.
>>43201247If politicians get their way, any site that has any user generated content at all (including SFW) will require age verification.
>>43201912Okay, but that still doesn't explain why only lolicon and shotacon and some foalcon got nuked.

I will no longer search for or type the word ponybooru after making this post as to not support it in any search algorithms and scrapers. I am going to block any site staff of ponybooru on any other social media. Any and all donations or considered donations to your site will also be withheld from our side until further notice. We demand that any and all discriminatory changes against the foalcon community will be upended. And that we will be reimbursed for the damages made by your illegitimate and rash decision to ban lolicon (and shotacon) from your site.We demand that we will not be shadowbanned on the homepage or trending page of ponybooru. We shall be treated equally as any other genre of artwork and not be target of automatic downvoting algorithms. This also includes that the tags "foalcon," "lolicon," "shotacon," and any other tags used for fictional underage artwork may no longer be filtered by the default "Everything" filter. We demand that there be a permanent pinned foal- and lolicon discussion and appreciation thread under the General Discussion topic. We also demand a permanent pinned thread for foal- and lolicon rule discussion under the Sity and Policy topic. We demand that a liaison for fillyfag interests be appointed to ponybooru site staff with equal rights to the moderator status. Additionally, we require this liaison to be added to the official ponybooru site staff Discord. And for any and all chat logs of that Discord as well as any and all chat logs of ZizzyDizzyMC of the past six (6) months to be made public for further investigation. We demand a public apology of ZizzyDizzyMC and the official ponybooru X account for any wrongdoing against the foalcon community. If you are not responding to and complying with the outlined terms within sixty (60) work days, the retributions listed above must unfortunately be enacted. We expect this to be handled swiftly and professionally by both parties so that we may come to an amicable agreement. We trust that such measures will not be necessary and look forward to our future collaboration.

Well, to eliminate ponybooru from the banner this thread need to reach to a bump limit first
which altbooru is the best?
>>43215282Right now you have a choice between Twibooru and Ponerpics. Twibooru is more of an "archive" than a community: comments can only be made anonymously and need to explicitly be turned on, but it has more pictures because it imports from the most places (when the importers aren't broken). If you want a community to share and discuss artwork with use Ponerpics, use Twibooru if you need to look up a picture and can't find it anywhere else.Tagging might be a bit better on Ponerpics because of the community aspect, but they turned off anonymous tag editing to combat spam so it might also no longer be the case.

Another update on the tape drive. Finally got all the pieces 3d printed, and what a pain it was to do so. I probably had a 20% success rate and burnt through about 4kg of resin. Also a bit over a week ago one of the failed prints ripped a hole in the bottom of my resin vat which was full of resin. That was a mess, but it's all done now. Hopefully.I've still got the Noctua 80mm fan on the back. I've got it on a fan controller that's outside the case so I can turn it on and off easily. The Noctua seems able to keep the drive under 50C during operation which seems good enough. I do have an Arctic 5k fan on standby if I need it but I don't think I will. One annoying thing about the drive temp readout is that you can't read the temp while the drive is active. One the subjects of thermals, had to do some work on the "server" portion as well. Got a U.2 drive which was overheating. I ended up using some thermal pads to use the case's metal faceplate as a heatsink. Works great. I've also done this in the past with m.2s on the underside of motherboards using the motherboard tray as a heatsink. Also needed to find a decent slim 80mm fan for the fiber channel card. I basically tried all of them on Amazon, the only decent slim 80mm fan is the Thermalright one. All the others suck. In case anyone ever needs a slim 80mm fan.I'm probably going to do my first full tape write tomorrow, hopefully it goes well.
>>43218819
>>43219268Looking forward to hear about the results.
>>43215294Ponerpics is the one that imports "from most places". Twibooru's importer was flawed for years, so tb have quite a few "gaps" in importing.Twibooru is better than Poner in terms of actually merging dupes, tho.
>>43220088Twibooru imports from Manebooru also, Ponerpics doesn't. And since Twibooru imports from Ponerpics they should have everything that Ponerpics managed to get from other boorus that Twibooru didn't.I know there was some drama over Ponerpics blocking Twibooru's importer earlier but AFAIK that's been resolved.
>>43220093>manebooruthat importer got broken a week after it was implemented. did the dev fix it?>And since Twibooru imports from Ponerpics they should have everything that Ponerpics managed to get from other boorus that Twibooru didn't.That's not how it works. Importer does not import imported pics. So "derpi => poner => tb" chain is impossible (unless someone removes "imported from x" tag, but that would be vandalism)
>>43220102>Importer does not import imported pics.Really? Oh man, that's retarded. Though I have seen some "imported from twibooru" pics on Twibooru itself, so I'm not entirely sure you're correct.
I'm glad that alt-boorus exist. Back in 2020 you could have entire thread getting derailed just because filename contains seven numbers instead of 16. Anons even filtered out posts with those filenames.
>>43220181In 2026, you have people unironically going "source?" when you post an image that has a booru number.

>>43220438>No drama, just accidentsIt was an accident, but there was drama because people thought it was done on purpose.>That is kind of hilarious.I was checking "imported from x" on several boorus at one point and did a double take when I accidentally checked the same tag on Twibooru and the description was "Wait, what?"
>>43219717
>>43219268>>43219963A success and a failure. Writing to tape went just fine, except I ran out of tape for the data I was trying to write. I knew writing the full 2.5TB was a bit optimistic. Since I did it as a single archive, the safest thing is to just rewrite the whole thing. But that's alright, I will try again tomorrow with around 2.4TB of data.It took about 7 hours to write the full tape. A bit slower than a hard drive, but it shouldn't matter as I'll probably just start a tape job before I go to work and it'll be done by the time I get back.I meant to check the temp right when it finished but I was away from the computer. I've been going back and forth on whether to switch to the high speed Arctic fan over the Noctua. I think I will switch since I will be away most the time the fan would be on because more airflow is always better. Plus with the fan controller I can just turn it down when I'm in the room. We'll see what I stick with.
>>43221358Dang. Let's see how the next attempt fares.
>>43221358Having it run unattended nullifies noise concerns and makes tape-melt avoidance all the more critical. With thermals, you can never have too big of a safety margin.
>>43221358If you're not gonna be around for it to write why make a box for it in the first place?
>>43222677The box provides a convenient place to mount a fan. Also, I think it looks a bit nicer. I'm eventually going to have it on a shelf by my desk. And I will most likely be around it for retrieving files and making incremental data dumps to the tape in the future. So I want it to be somewhat acceptable to be around.
Late night bump.
>>43221358>>43221605Same thing happened again. This time I actually went through my logs and calculated that I had successfully written approximately 2335gb of data before reaching the end of the tape. What's interesting is that sg3-utils still reports about 113gb remaining free in the tape partition.I think what's happening is that tape manufacturers are doing the same thing that HDD manufacturers do with the capacity measurements. Using one of those HDD capacity calculators online I come out to a true capacity of about 2328gb, which is pretty close to what I actually wrote. As to why I seemingly got a few gb more, I've read that it's sometimes possible to over-write (not overwrite) a tape in the same way that you can sometimes overburn a CD or DVD. The explanation being that the extra tape is there to give the drive time to come to a stop after reading/writing the standard end of the data. I think in the future I will try to stay under 2300gb to be safe.Tomorrow I will try again.
>>43223172I am pretty sure what you are describing is that your tape drive supports early EOM, and you can turn it off. Think it's more for backup software to know it's about to run out of tape.
>>43223566From what I read it is a function of the Linux tape driver. It doesn't seem like it can be "turned off", but rather that the backup application must be aware that it can ignore the errors (or something to that effect). I've also read that it is used as reserve capacity if the tape or drive head isn't performing as well. I'm just using tar to write to the tape. Not sure if tar has an option for this. But in the interest of simplifying things, I might just accept the 5% loss if that is what it is.
>>43221195
>>43224310
>>43224737
>>43223172Finally, success! I think tomorrow to test I will extract the last file written to tape and verify the checksum. The downside of writing a single archive rather than multiple, I don't believe there's a way to skip forward in the tar archive.
>>43225235>Finally, success!Nice.
>>43225235GNU TAR multipart archives might be a solution, but last time I dealt with them it was more trouble than it was worth. It would also let you span archives across tapes though...
