I think it's fair to point out that Luna Eclipsed has basically no connection to the pilot of the show other than reusing the same design. An obscure myth becomes a beloved holiday, a scared little filly who speaks like anypony else becomes a big mare (for you) who's overdramatic and can't figure out modern Equestria. If you watched the two back to back you'd be baffled. I still enjoy the episode but once I had it pointed out to me I felt a little silly for not noticing it myself.

My source on this is some half-remembered hearsay, so stop me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the case that Luna was never really meant to be re-appear? As in, defeating Nightmare Moon was originally supposed to have her be gone for good? Luna being completely undeveloped in S1, and the total redesign in S2, both make more sense if so.

We don't know how long it was since the NMM's return and the events of Cutie Re-mark, but considering there were two Hearthswarming episodes between them, they most likely take place a bit over 2 years apart. That's definitely not enough time for her to completely leave behind the marenisms, especially considering she'd spend a lot of that time busy ruling over Equestria. At the very least, she should not be better at it than Luna, who had the same amount of time, while only being responsible with taking care of dreams.
