I think it's fair to point out that Luna Eclipsed has basically no connection to the pilot of the show other than reusing the same design. An obscure myth becomes a beloved holiday, a scared little filly who speaks like anypony else becomes a big mare (for you) who's overdramatic and can't figure out modern Equestria. If you watched the two back to back you'd be baffled. I still enjoy the episode but once I had it pointed out to me I felt a little silly for not noticing it myself.

My source on this is some half-remembered hearsay, so stop me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the case that Luna was never really meant to be re-appear? As in, defeating Nightmare Moon was originally supposed to have her be gone for good? Luna being completely undeveloped in S1, and the total redesign in S2, both make more sense if so.

I'm of the mind that its a very newfag thing to not care about the change. To the newfag, the gap between season 1 Luna and season 2 Luna was probably a few days as you spedwatched the series. To those who were Lunafags from the start, they had a year to love this sister. To make content of her. To make greens. To make fun gamerluna memes. She was with them a while. A year.
