Ah, just did my annual re-read of Broken Bluebird.
I've gone through a lot of fics and greens in my time in this fandom, but I don't think anything has ever made me feel the way that story did (and often still does). It has one of the most well-executed tragic endings I've come across: the villains-eye-view of the heroic plot that foils him; that he wins over Dash and isolates loyalty in the end; that his trauma from space corpo-tyranny so directly injures him beyond any ability to believe in redemption from ponies even as Chrysalis is literally telling him about how they spared her for a sob story; that this lack of faith so convincingly leads to his choosing death. I read Dash's self-imposed isolation in the epilogue and I all at once both despise this Anon and yearn for his salvation. His motivations, his traumas, his responses to limited information, are excellently realized, and the stalemate the story presents is a sophisticated and challenging mix of countering capacities and motivations, even if the realpolitik itself does not always live up.
I didn't think I'd enjoy a non-sexual BDSM/abuse story. I was shocked at how illicit and stirring some of the content was, especially the scenes where he shows dash off to her friends. The somewhat contrived main torture method aside, all of their small interactions are highly on-target and each scene is loaded with physicality. Anon picking up Dash by her collar and walking her back against a wall probably caused more of an awakening in me than the first time I read a rape scene. It's not easy to nail "master" dialog, it being an art of contestation and power, and harder still to balance it with meaningful flaws and imperfections - this Anon is direct and biting, yet never bereft of human warmth. Though the author's skill clearly improves in the later installments, the earliest scenes between them are still some of my go-tos when I wonder what a disciplinarian should sound like in writing.
That the ponies, too, are on-point, in-character, and that the story is thrumming with their strengths and triumphs, is an elevation in a medium that too often refuses to take them seriously. BB remains the greatest kindergrim tightrope act I've seen in the fandom of ponies being both MLP characters and real agents capable of fathoming and standing up to cruelty. Perhaps that is why the ending always gives me such heartache: the ponies are so strong, why did they have to lose the fight for Dash's heart? Alas.
I wish Anon had lived, I wish that Dash had stayed among her friends, I wish they both could have healed and stayed together. I wish they could all win, I wish they would all lose. Broken Bluebird made me yearn with an intensity that little else in the fandom ever has.

That took way too long. Like, an absurd amount of time.
My biggest weakness- productivity aside, of course- is still lewd scenes. I like to think that they're turning out alright, but it takes way more effort to write "then they fucked" than it does to do all the actual narrative stuff. I suspect the only solution for that is more practice, but I'd be happy to take any advice that might be available.

This has tied up a few hanging threads, namely Anon's mess and Rarity's chastity. We might deny Rarity again for fun, but as far as narrative points go, it's sorta resolved. This is great. I've found it progressively more difficult to keep things focused as time goes on since it's way easier to add an element than it is to resolve one. I'm trying not to add more moving parts until most of them are resolved, but it's stifling at times, and I'm starting to understand why comic books get so many reboots.

I agree that BB does have a clear and satisfying element of "ponies made to confront brutal human reality", and the most stimulating scenes to me are the ones where ponies simply react to the things Anon his done.
