Actually Rarity's outfit in the OP conveys something similar, it's just a little more tryhard version of the same concept. Rarity's outfit is appealing because it's simple and understated, but it also looks like she probably spent a lot of time and effort putting that look together, along with the hair and everything else she did. Twilight's is appealing because it's just a simple, visually appealing garment that looks flattering on her. It looks good on Twilight specifically because it plays into Twilight's overall appeal. The whole issue in the episode is that Rarity is supposed to be making her some kind of elaborate high-fashion thing but keeps blowing it off to hang out with the rich sophisticated crowd, and ends up feeling bad about having to give Twilight something simple and basic that she didn't put any real work into.
