>>43142463Western art is more interesting and expressive a lot of the time. In general there's much more variety in visual style than in Japanese art. This isn't to say that certain original Japanese works and artists aren't excellent, but East Asian culture in general seems to lead fan artists to focus on conforming precisely to certain accepted styles which of course require a lot of technical skill, but which are also in high supply. Works of fan art in Japanese aesthetic styles have lots of mass appeal because that style is very pretty on the surface, but they aren't usually very meaningful or original. I mean, look at OP's pic. It's Cheerilee wearing a vaguely ancient-Greek-looking outfit, in a vaguely dynamic pose, looking at a vaguely dove-like bird. It's pretty, but there's nothing else to it.
