The clearly wrote the first Equestria Girls movie thinking it was gonna be a one off which is why the plot is about Twilight having the race against the clock to get the crown back before the portal closes. But after it was successful and Hasbro decided that they were gonna make more movies set in the human world it made sense to write Princess Twilight out because how do justify her constantly having to hop through the portal to go to high school?

I liked Sci-Twi more than Unicorn Twilight. Twilight felt like an autism coded self-insert while Sci-Twi was a fully fleshed dork with her own personal issues that make her endearing.
