Was G5 actually any good? Anything worth watching? All I know about it is Sunny a cute.
>>43169080>Was G5 actually any good? Anything worth watching? No and no
>>43169080It's better than FIM S3+. Movie is better than the G4 movie by a landslide.
>>43169080The sunny VA was very enthusiastic. I liked her when i met her. I'd watch it for that reason
>>43169080lol, lmao even.
It basically depends on whether or not you actively enjoy the characters interacting with eachother. It has the snarky late 2010s writing style which I personally find eyeroll-inducing so I didn't love it but other people clearly disagree.
>>43169096>It has the snarky late 2010s writing styleIt doesn't have that at all.
>>43169086>It's better than FIM S3+That really don't say much desu.
>>43169107It absolutely does.
>>43169080KEK
Only thing I watched was A New Generation.
>>43169158Well I just started watching that and they are sure beating you over the head with the "everyone is irrationally afraid of each other" bit with a sledgehammer.
>>43169080The movie is unsubtle, unpolished, underbaked; the first 10 minutes or so make it seem like there will be some sincere emotional stakes but then it kind of beats you over the head with the fact that not even the movie takes itself seriously. The pacing is too fast, too, yet it never feels like very much is happening. I felt physically ill after finishing it, but really, I guess it's okay as a licensed kids movie... the kind you'd watch out of nostalgia, not the kind that's "actually unironically super good #mychildhoodwasawesome". I'd rank it slightly below the 2000s Barbie DVD movies. The 2 series that came after were extremely low quality and make the movie look good in comparison. The 3D one might use the same models as the movie, but the animation is stiff and limited, like an SFM from youtube. The scripts also really feel like they're from youtube; not like the indie animation series you see everywhere now, more like 2010s budget kids content that's only a couple clicks away from elsagate. The characters are really one-note, and that note is only sometimes related to their actual movie personalities (the tomboy seems to have inexplicably become obsessed with being a detective?)G% is clearly made for ADHD troom troom iPad kids. I couldn't even stomach two episodes. I thought people just hated it because new=bad or because they hated the direction the story went, and that I might like it if I went in with an open mind... but it turns out it's really just lazy and dumb, devoid of charm in a way that even S8&9 never were.I see Berrow's name on it and I can't help but wonder how she shat out this monstrosity. Not all of her episodes were winners (coughcough Fluttershy Leans In), but they were generally good, and her later books were also pretty good.
>>43169392Yeah just finished the movie, the opening is super strong, like a classic disney movie almost, and gave me false hope. The plot really falls apart about halfway through and never really recovers, the ending is such a hot mess and characters keep showing up randomly just because they need to be at that spot at that time for the story to work. And I take it it's all downhill from here? No wonder it failed so spectacularly.Damn. Sunny still a cute.
>>43169440It gets so much worse. They systematically did everything wrong after the movie (which I still think was pretty good).
>>43169738It had some moments, I think I might have had to hold back some tears when Izzy reveals the note, it's beautiful. But it just gets far too incoherent towards the end to really feel like a good movie.
>>43169775You can really tell it's the kind of movie that went through years and years of revisions.
>>43169392Nice slopreview
>>43169080I wish.
Okay, I have a lot of thoughts and I'm just gonna start venting about stuff that bugged me.Hitch is shown being just as afraid of unicorns and pegasii as everyone else but he has no problem sneaking into the pegasus city to arrest Sunny? He just forgets his fear I guess.Deputy Sprout declares himself emperor... what? fucking WHAT!? I get the plot point of fear escalating with Hitch gone, but this is just too dumb. The queen and pipp conventiently escape prison off-screen... how? Zipp has plenty of motivation to save her own family, so just have her convince the others to help her break them out. Coulda been a good moment for Hitch to reconsider his duty vs ethics dilemma too.Hitch's entire motivation is that he has to punish his friend for going too far, Sunny even says he can take her into custody when the two crystals fail, but when they return to the town it's just not brought up again? She sure looks ready to march directly into the slammer. He could at least have put her under house arrest or something, go easy on her with some kind words. Anything other than dropping it completely without a word.He could have come right back and lifted her house arrest as soon as he sees how cooky the townsponies have gone anyway, that'd be reasonable. When Izzy and Sunny take off on their journey it feels like there's a scene missing, like where they walk along and don't know what to say to each other before breaking into the travel song. But it just cuts right to the song?Too many songs, a few of them are good, like the buddy travel song, Sunny's I want song at the beginning, the makeover song. But a lot of them are just there to pad the runtime and sound like shit.It feels like there should be more to the idea of combining the crystals, like maybe something her dad wrote in the journal? It seems like the stained glass mural isn't enough to go off of and they're just jumping to conclusions. The third crystal reveal is great, but then it still doesn't work? And then Sunny pulls this idea of it being based on cooperation right out of her ass. Again some kind of justification for why she would think this is sorely needed. It's fine as a plot point but it comes with absolutely zero justification.Just assembling the picture frame seems a little half-baked, they really couldn't have come up with a better way for the three leaders to work together? She left the other two crystals with their original owners and they parted ways. But then they just show up at the end with the crystals anyway, because of reasons? The queen showed up out of nowhere in the forest too. I don't even have any suggestions here, just... what the fuck.
>>43170689>Deputy Sprout declares himself emperor... what? fucking WHAT!?Insecure younger brother is given attention and importance in his new role so he absolutely embraces it. The execution is poor but I don't have a problem with the concept, they should've just played it straight instead of him being a pathetic momma's boy who ends up being completely worthless and posing no meaningful threat to anybody.
>>43169080The movie is OK but too short for what it wants to do.The 3d series starts out bad but improves significantly during its run. The final two seasons are actually quite enjoyable but the plot is very clearly rushed. The 2d series is bad but there's a handful of good episodes and moments mixed in.
>>43170693I get the authority going to his head, and accidentally whipping the worried crowd into a frenzy bit. But there's a long way from there to mecha-emperor Sprout. It's too absurd.I like how the earth ponies go into panic and the pegasii have their little revolution over the fake flight stuff, but there's not really any turmoil caused in the unicorn village? The different ways they go crazy could have tied into a better ending where all three problems are resolved.idk not my job to write this stuff.
>>43169440The movie is terrible outside of some of the character rendering and music score. It's just a generic, bland modern kid's movie with overdone celebrity voice actors (minus Izzy's) and quips that barely conveys the pony spirit. I didn't fall in love with G5 until I got through the first few hours of Make Your Mark. G5 at its core is a half-baked version of FiM season 1 and you will like it if you're into the softer themes and escapism of MLP. There's almost no screaming matches between the characters all of the ponies genuinely feel an inseparable friend group that you want to be a part of. It's as if the entire show was the "Best Friends Until the End of Time" sequence from FiM. G5's music is a huge guilty pleasure for me because the lyrics are so soulful even if the actual composition have no complexity.
>>43169080Both shows were cancelled for a reason.
Oh, and Izzy's ability to see "sparkle-shine" (auras?) hints at some kind of magic left in her, this is never paid off. I suppose she could just be schizophrenic, but I don't think that was the intent.
>>43169080The ear flinching and microexpression animation is absolute godsend. Misty is an adorable schizo, we need more tryhard evil characters like her. As far as I watched it, that's about it: nothing else went above meh.>>43170689>Sunny pulls this idea of it being based on cooperation right out of her assI believe they aimed to rhyme it with Twilight's comparably nonsensical revelation about the elements from g4 s1e2.
I just had a dissociative episode where I hallucinated a better ending.>After the third failure, Sunny gives up completely.>Sorry dad, magic isn't real, it was all just stories after all.>Her new friends comfort her, they all touch a crystal at the same time, and it lights up.>Izzy recognizes it as sparkle-shine, excited that the others can see it too.>Sunny realizes that Friendship is Magic™ and it was within them from the start.>Izzy and the pegasus sisters are empowered to perform one miracle of magic and flight each.>They have to stop the fighting before anyone gets hurt>Zippy leaps off the top of the lighthouse to reach something in time>Classic vertigo shot preceing her leap of faith>Hitch steps in to calm the angry mob.>Pippy convinces the pegasus guard to stop fighting.>One of the crystals get shattered.>Izzy fixes it with her magic, everyone sees it.>Sunny does a talk-no-jutsu to convince everyone to give magic a chance.>The three leaders come together to unite the pieces, Sunny ascends in the middle of it.>Magic returns.>The unicorns and pegasus guard help to clean up the mess so earth ponies trust them again. Not sure how to connect that to the rest of the film, but thank you for riding the schizo train with me.
>>43170975Neat. Now fix Misty's arc.
>>43171033No idea who that is, haven't seen the show.Oh, oh, and if Sprout's mecha is malfunctioning and Zippy saves him from it by flying, yeah yeah that'd be great. Prove the most paranoid pony wrong and give Zipp a moment of heroism.
>>43170738Ackchually, only TYT was cancelled.
>>43169080I thought the G5 was generally well done, but I have some gripes:1. Maretime Bay is pale shadow of Ponyville. It doesn't have as many locations and they aren't as interesting.2. The characters speak way too fast. The way the lines were delivered in G4 felt a lot more theatrical.3. I'm not exactly sure what Zipp's personality is supposed to be. She's not a super competitive athlete like Rainbow Dash. Like..what's her deal? What motivates her to get up in the morning?4. I thought Misty was great as the bumbling henchman to Opaline but her personality doesn't lend itself to heroics.
>>43171321>3Before the movie she's a deeply tragic character forced to lie about something that should but cannot exist, basically Schmendrick the Magician. After, I don't know. The ending gives her a closure so complete that you would need to reinvent her as a character to get her do do things again. As far as I remember, in the series she just does whatever.
>>43169080Me personally, I enjoyed G5, in a technical sense G4 was better written but the characters were still very fun (and hot) and i tend to put on random TYT episodes if i wanna turn off my brain for 5 minutes.
The more I think about it, the more I like the cast. There's some solid real bones there, especially between Sunny, Izzy and Hitch. It feels like they really tried to build on that all-ages, unisex appeal of G4 and succeeded.Sunny being a bit of an ascended girlfailure feels universally relatable, and her earnest idealism makes her a perfect lead.Hitch's childhood friendship with her feels believable, giving him an "in" to the all-female friend group. He reads as nominally "cool" while not being an overpowering presence. He's an emotionally open and positive male figure. The conflict between his duty and his friendship is compelling.Izzy is not nearly as annoying as it seems like she would be, her awkwardness is grounded in her outsider loneliness, again making it relatable.Pipp and Zipp feel a little more tacked on but the duality of "girly popstar" and "couldn't care less about being a princess" punk does round out the cast.Their designs are great, they're all really cute, the movie's "pastel glitter" look is very pleasant and it doesn't stray into off-putting rainbow vomit territory.Maybe tone down the bulldyke look to Zipp? Or give her some kind of motivation? Whatever, not gonna lose any sleep over it. She's fine. But it's all completely let down by the movie's plot falling apart and the series flanderizing them so hard. I wouldn't mind if they just rebooted it again with the same characters, they're really, really good. A G5.5 of sorts?
>>43171751Anon you Silly goober, you forgot the main character of g5!
>>43170689>When Izzy and Sunny take off on their journey it feels like there's a scene missing,Oh, there is. It's an exposition scene where Sunny and Izzy introduce themselves and explain the current state of the world, establishing the stakes and emotional core of the movie, like the Luke and Obiwan hut scene. But that was too slow for kids, so you're ripped out of it and shuffled into a song sequence.>>43171321>I'm not exactly sure what Zipp's personality is supposed to beVaguely heroic and noble, which is why she didn't like living a lie, and was the most motivated to solve the mystery. It falls flat due it never coming up in the story. Should have made Pipp the heir so they could have conflict instead.>but her personality doesn't lend itself to heroics. The problem is there's nothing for her to do after reforming, and the 180 she has in the finale comes out of nowhere. Making her the new loremaster in the unreleased episodes was pure cringe too.>>43171751>Sunny being a bit of an ascended girlfailure feels universally relatableWhat makes her a failure? She manages to keep steady employment and hasn't been run out of town against all odds.>and her earnest idealism makes her a perfect lead.Sunny never reconciling her view of the world with all the hatred she witnesses does not feel earnest, it feels farcical. >Hitch's childhood friendship with her feels believableSunny and Hitch being friends is like a Holocaust denier and a Jew being friends, after the denier starts defacing Holocaust memorials. No, it is not believable in the slightest.>Their designs are greatDo people like the emphasis on hooves that much? I also don't like the proportions. Looks like a greyhound with an oversized head.
>>43171894>What makes her a failure?inept activism pushing everyone but hitch away? almost getting run out of town? nearly ending up in the slammer?being stuck in a dead end menial summer job while her friend is the freaking sheriff?she's really not in a good spot at the start of the movie.and do you even know what "earnest idealism" means? becuase I think you don't. you might be confusing it for "jaded realism".>Sunny and Hitch being friends is like a Holocaust denier and a Jew being friendstake meds, now.
I saw some comments suggesting it was cut down from 117 minutes to 90 minutes due to switching from paramount to netflix. Would explain a lot of the pacing and plot issues.I hate corpo meddling so fucking much.
>>43171894>Oh, there is. It's an exposition scene where Sunny and Izzy introduce themselves and explain the current state of the world, establishing the stakes and emotional core of the movie, like the Luke and Obiwan hut scene. But that was too slow for kids, so you're ripped out of it and shuffled into a song sequence.Do you have a link to that scene? Script? Animatic? Storyboard? Anything?
>>43169080if you must watch anything from g5, watch the movie, and skip everything else
>>43172142Watch the movie, and the lesbian makeout scene between Sunny and Izzy in MYM.
>>43172158the waht
>>43169080Sunny and Misty while she was still with Opaline were the only real reasons to watch it.They butchered the rest of the characters too much after the movie and they couldn't be saved.
>>43171751The movie does feel like a good basic idea was pitched by someone who knew what they were doing. It was probably a pilot/intro to an adventure-focused season of the show. Then it got handed to a shittier writer who crammed in junk like Sprout/Canterlogic/etc.Fucking shame. Seeing Sunny uncover her father's research into G4 archeology could've been cool. Having her seen as a troublemaker could've made for a lot of good tension.
>>43172431from that one animatic one of the animators put out there, it looks like the story was radically different to begin with.like, a completely different movie, not just injecting minor revisions. so I don't know if it's fair to call canterlogic an insert.seems more like >>43171934 is the case, decent flick was cut down into nonsense just so moms can fit their kids netflix time into their schedule or whatever. blegh.I actually really, really like the whole "magic has gone out of the world and we gotta bring it back" premise, it's great. I also love when time moves on in fantasy universes, like the old fable games. and it feels far enough removed from the G4 mythos that I honestly don't really understand the complaints about that that I've seen.bringing magic into a "modern" world has a peculiar taste to it, and it definitely demands more followup. I think if they leaned into "the fantastical intruding on the mundane", it would have a deeply unique feel to set it apart from most other things. but in the series it's oddly not even really treated as anything special, it falls completely flat.when izzy shows up and all she can do with her horn is use it as a can-opener it's actually kinda sad, and her using magic for the first time should be cathartic and well, magical, but it isn't really.there is obviously an element of modern politics with the whole "we are all the same" messaging but honestly that feels secondary to me.
>>43171894>Making her the new loremaster in the unreleased episodesIn the what now?
>>43172490>that one animaticTried to look this up and found a few animatics I've never seen. Are you talking about the silent one? It looks like they embellished on the opening scene where the foals were playing together to have some sort of duet with Argyle. The other song animatics I found do make the story seem a bit different. Sunny's song is more comedic. Seems like a stretch to say this is radically different. Is there something else?
Damn it. God damn it. I love Sunny and izzy so fucking much now. Don't take them from me! Nooo! Not like this...

>>43171923>inept activism pushing everyone but hitch away? almost getting run out of town? nearly ending up in the slammer?Being and inept idiot is universally relatable?>being stuck in a dead end menial summer job while her friend is the freaking sheriff?I think assuming Sunny doesn't enjoy her job says a lot about you. She apparently really likes smoothies. For some reason.>and do you even know what "earnest idealism" means? becuase I think you don't.I find it amusing that you've just provided evidence that disproved your own point. A person that has gone through years of failing to make inroads shouldn't be Pollyanna and chipper. That's what makes it "not earnest". It's the same problem with the main chick from the Fallout show.>take meds, now.Go back and watch the start of the movie. Sprout says he learned in school the reason Earth Ponies hate everybody else is because there was a war between the tribes and Earth Ponies being cannibalized. With that context, I'd be deeply disturbed by Sunny if I was in Hitch's shoes.>>43171934>Would explain a lot of the pacing and plot issues.I'd might agree, if Toy Story didn't exist, which is only 81 minutes. Really, it's like MLP the movie–a bunch of unnecessary crap being shoehorned in and distracting from the central story, leaving everything feeling threadbare. >>43171981Oh, it's not a real scene, I'm just saying it's what you would need to put in for the story to be good. You can see where it should have been, though. It's when Sunny brings Izzy to the lighthouse after the town incident. They start talking, before being WRENCHED from the scene by Hitch arriving to arrest them, like you're watching a JJ Abrams movie.>>43172495It was a released episode, Misty-rious New Room, my bad.
>>43173398It's very different to write a movie for 80 minutes to begin with, compared to cutting down a movie to 90 minutes.take those meds already.
also don't reply to me because you clearly can't read. idiot.
And yes, having a dream that you struggle to fulfill while your life seems to stagnate is very relatable. I don't know why I have to explain this.
>>43169080The first movie had some decent bits, the villain was kind of funny but it was mostly "ugh, whatever". If I had to put it somewhere in terms of quality, it is above season 6 but below season 5. When it comes to the other stuff, Tell your Tale is bean-mouth shit and I refuse to watch Make your Mark. There's something I find funny about how hard people danced over G5's grave as if Hasbro hadn't left a giant crater on G4's legacy and dignity. But I guess people don't care about having decent standards as long as the second newest thing slightly resembles the one they watched in the past, so they feel justified in dunking on the newest one.
>>43173693I just watched a few episodes of MYM, it's teletubbies-tier kiddy shit. Whatever charm was left from the movie despite the botched ending is completely gone in the show.Maybe it gets better later? But I don't care to watch that much to find out.How did it get this bad?
They murdered my girl Izzy...
>>43173713>Maybe it gets better later? It does. After the first couple of episodes, the animation gets much better and the story starts to get interesting to the point that I’d call MYM on par with FiM Seasons 5–6, and better than Seasons 7–9.
>>43173791recommend me an episode
>>43173809Manesquerade Ball (story driven) or Cutie Blossom Bash (character driven).
>>43171894>>43173398>defacing Holocaust memorials (is the same as advocating for unity after) a war between the tribes where Earth Ponies were cannibalizedNTA, but that's quite a gap to leap. Way too wide for me to guess the missing steps unambiguously, but are we at least on the same page about the difference between hating the sin and the sinner? Or the sinner's grandchildren, in this case. Like, she doesn't necessarily have to believe that the war was clean and tidy, with no famine, pillaging or gangrape. That'd be weird.
Geez, and here I was trying to talk out my knotted up thoughts on G5 with someone. Guess I struck a nerve.>>43173713>Maybe it gets better later? It really doesn't. The show bungles the procedural format and drags out every single one of the major reveals, and fills the rest of the time with really uninteresting character work and zero worldbuilding.>How did it get this bad?People who have no talent, no worldly experience, and nothing to say compelled to work on a concept they have no interest in.>>43173953I'd love to discuss the topic with you, but the war concept is a throwaway line that's never followed up on. How much of it is true, and how did it come about in the context of Make Your Mark's Opaline? Don't know! The Holocaust denier thing was just an example to illustrate how weird Sunny's activism is in context, and how incongruous her relationship is to Hitch, it's not meant to be one for one.
Don't die while I sleep, pls.
>>43174204The way I understand it, it is implied that at the beginning of the movie most ponies only care about fearing other tribes on a purely abstract, symbolic level. They can work themselves or each other into seeing Sunny's goals as an existential threat and lose their sleep over it if they really want to, but it would take a lot of additional time and effort. There's not much evidence either way, but I think otherwise Sprout's mom would at least sell actual deadly weapons instead of her wacky junk. If I'm right, then it's only logical that Hitch has no deep feelings about Sunny's beliefs and only opposes the stuff his job explicitly requires him to oppose, like property damage.
It could have been so good...
>>43174304I understand that was the writer's intention, but unfortunately, they didn't put the work into the worldbuilding to earn that. Which is an endemic problem throughout the entire generation, and why we have a thread of people saying that they didn't enjoy G5.>>43174902It really couldn't have. Not without someone with a vision like Lauren.
>>43175153I think there was a vision, somewhere, at some point, someone did have one. It was just drowned.
>>43175169I don't think so. Just look at what happened to Sunny between the movie and MYM. She was activist, which if you read the screener notes the production team was super excited for, but then all of that is dropped for the rest of the series. That doesn't seem to be something quashed by interference, it just seems like nobody had the answer to the question of "Now what?".
>>43175362Yeah, that's what I mean. Not translating the characterizations and setups from the movie to the show is one way the vision got squashed.I really do feel like there was an honest effort to making something great.
Don't fall off yet, I'm writing something.
>>43175733alright was gonna write in my own words but had to slop it quickly because this shit is sliding off the page so fast.https://ponepaste.org/11849
>>43176139eww
>>43175390I'm not arguing the vision got squashed, I'm arguing there was no vision in the first place. And even conceding that, even if we pretend a lot of the same people didn't work on everything, surely you would try to say SOMETHING with the story.>I really do feel like there was an honest effort to making something great.I don't. It isn't like the series had this awesome buildup that ended with a dud because of Hasbro interference, it raised thousands of questions with its premise, tottered around doing not much, and then ended unceremoniously.>>43176139Going to have to disagree with the conclusions. G5's world was as limited as can be. In G4, you could introduce a new pony settlement and nobody would bat an eye. In G5, introducing a new pony settlement would cause everybody to scream at their monitors. The modern setting doesn't work with MLP. There have been 4 attempts at it so far, and none of them have caught on.
>>43176198>It isn't like the seriesThe series was dead from episode 1. I'm talking about G5 as a whole.

How rude.>>43176211In that case, I think you have even less of a leg to stand on. Making all the G4 characters dead with a legacy of failure was always a bad idea.
>>43176283It's not like there's any more than the most tenuous connection. It amounts to little more than a wink and a nod. It doesn't matter. It was the series that decided to bring it front and center, creating all the continuity issues.

>>43176348You're hyperfixating on something that literally doesn't matter. G5 was it's own thing with a wink and a nod to G4, until it started floundering and they brought in G4 characters out of desperation.
my favorite part of g5 is immediately (as in, in the movie) confirming that the mane six failed in g4 and friendship died because ponies are too racist
G5 never recovered from how different the target age demos of the movie and subsequent animations were.
