Well I just started watching that and they are sure beating you over the head with the "everyone is irrationally afraid of each other" bit with a sledgehammer.

The movie is unsubtle, unpolished, underbaked; the first 10 minutes or so make it seem like there will be some sincere emotional stakes but then it kind of beats you over the head with the fact that not even the movie takes itself seriously. The pacing is too fast, too, yet it never feels like very much is happening. I felt physically ill after finishing it, but really, I guess it's okay as a licensed kids movie... the kind you'd watch out of nostalgia, not the kind that's "actually unironically super good #mychildhoodwasawesome". I'd rank it slightly below the 2000s Barbie DVD movies.

The 2 series that came after were extremely low quality and make the movie look good in comparison. The 3D one might use the same models as the movie, but the animation is stiff and limited, like an SFM from youtube. The scripts also really feel like they're from youtube; not like the indie animation series you see everywhere now, more like 2010s budget kids content that's only a couple clicks away from elsagate. The characters are really one-note, and that note is only sometimes related to their actual movie personalities (the tomboy seems to have inexplicably become obsessed with being a detective?)

G% is clearly made for ADHD troom troom iPad kids. I couldn't even stomach two episodes. I thought people just hated it because new=bad or because they hated the direction the story went, and that I might like it if I went in with an open mind... but it turns out it's really just lazy and dumb, devoid of charm in a way that even S8&9 never were.

I see Berrow's name on it and I can't help but wonder how she shat out this monstrosity. Not all of her episodes were winners (coughcough Fluttershy Leans In), but they were generally good, and her later books were also pretty good.

Yeah just finished the movie, the opening is super strong, like a classic disney movie almost, and gave me false hope. The plot really falls apart about halfway through and never really recovers, the ending is such a hot mess and characters keep showing up randomly just because they need to be at that spot at that time for the story to work.

Okay, I have a lot of thoughts and I'm just gonna start venting about stuff that bugged me.

Hitch is shown being just as afraid of unicorns and pegasii as everyone else but he has no problem sneaking into the pegasus city to arrest Sunny? He just forgets his fear I guess.

Deputy Sprout declares himself emperor... what? fucking WHAT!? I get the plot point of fear escalating with Hitch gone, but this is just too dumb.

The queen and pipp conventiently escape prison off-screen... how? Zipp has plenty of motivation to save her own family, so just have her convince the others to help her break them out. Coulda been a good moment for Hitch to reconsider his duty vs ethics dilemma too.

Hitch's entire motivation is that he has to punish his friend for going too far, Sunny even says he can take her into custody when the two crystals fail, but when they return to the town it's just not brought up again? She sure looks ready to march directly into the slammer. He could at least have put her under house arrest or something, go easy on her with some kind words. Anything other than dropping it completely without a word.

He could have come right back and lifted her house arrest as soon as he sees how cooky the townsponies have gone anyway, that'd be reasonable.

When Izzy and Sunny take off on their journey it feels like there's a scene missing, like where they walk along and don't know what to say to each other before breaking into the travel song. But it just cuts right to the song?

Too many songs, a few of them are good, like the buddy travel song, Sunny's I want song at the beginning, the makeover song. But a lot of them are just there to pad the runtime and sound like shit.

It feels like there should be more to the idea of combining the crystals, like maybe something her dad wrote in the journal? It seems like the stained glass mural isn't enough to go off of and they're just jumping to conclusions.

The third crystal reveal is great, but then it still doesn't work? And then Sunny pulls this idea of it being based on cooperation right out of her ass. Again some kind of justification for why she would think this is sorely needed. It's fine as a plot point but it comes with absolutely zero justification.

Just assembling the picture frame seems a little half-baked, they really couldn't have come up with a better way for the three leaders to work together?

She left the other two crystals with their original owners and they parted ways. But then they just show up at the end with the crystals anyway, because of reasons? The queen showed up out of nowhere in the forest too. I don't even have any suggestions here, just... what the fuck.

The movie is terrible outside of some of the character rendering and music score. It's just a generic, bland modern kid's movie with overdone celebrity voice actors (minus Izzy's) and quips that barely conveys the pony spirit. I didn't fall in love with G5 until I got through the first few hours of Make Your Mark.
G5 at its core is a half-baked version of FiM season 1 and you will like it if you're into the softer themes and escapism of MLP. There's almost no screaming matches between the characters all of the ponies genuinely feel an inseparable friend group that you want to be a part of. It's as if the entire show was the "Best Friends Until the End of Time" sequence from FiM. G5's music is a huge guilty pleasure for me because the lyrics are so soulful even if the actual composition have no complexity.

I thought the G5 was generally well done, but I have some gripes:
1. Maretime Bay is pale shadow of Ponyville. It doesn't have as many locations and they aren't as interesting.
2. The characters speak way too fast. The way the lines were delivered in G4 felt a lot more theatrical.
3. I'm not exactly sure what Zipp's personality is supposed to be. She's not a super competitive athlete like Rainbow Dash. Like..what's her deal? What motivates her to get up in the morning?
4. I thought Misty was great as the bumbling henchman to Opaline but her personality doesn't lend itself to heroics.

The more I think about it, the more I like the cast. There's some solid real bones there, especially between Sunny, Izzy and Hitch.

It feels like they really tried to build on that all-ages, unisex appeal of G4 and succeeded.

Sunny being a bit of an ascended girlfailure feels universally relatable, and her earnest idealism makes her a perfect lead.

Hitch's childhood friendship with her feels believable, giving him an "in" to the all-female friend group. He reads as nominally "cool" while not being an overpowering presence. He's an emotionally open and positive male figure. The conflict between his duty and his friendship is compelling.

Izzy is not nearly as annoying as it seems like she would be, her awkwardness is grounded in her outsider loneliness, again making it relatable.

Pipp and Zipp feel a little more tacked on but the duality of "girly popstar" and "couldn't care less about being a princess" punk does round out the cast.

Their designs are great, they're all really cute, the movie's "pastel glitter" look is very pleasant and it doesn't stray into off-putting rainbow vomit territory.

Maybe tone down the bulldyke look to Zipp? Or give her some kind of motivation? Whatever, not gonna lose any sleep over it. She's fine.

But it's all completely let down by the movie's plot falling apart and the series flanderizing them so hard. I wouldn't mind if they just rebooted it again with the same characters, they're really, really good. A G5.5 of sorts?

I actually really, really like the whole "magic has gone out of the world and we gotta bring it back" premise, it's great. I also love when time moves on in fantasy universes, like the old fable games. and it feels far enough removed from the G4 mythos that I honestly don't really understand the complaints about that that I've seen.

bringing magic into a "modern" world has a peculiar taste to it, and it definitely demands more followup. I think if they leaned into "the fantastical intruding on the mundane", it would have a deeply unique feel to set it apart from most other things. but in the series it's oddly not even really treated as anything special, it falls completely flat.

when izzy shows up and all she can do with her horn is use it as a can-opener it's actually kinda sad, and her using magic for the first time should be cathartic and well, magical, but it isn't really.

there is obviously an element of modern politics with the whole "we are all the same" messaging but honestly that feels secondary to me.

The first movie had some decent bits, the villain was kind of funny but it was mostly "ugh, whatever". If I had to put it somewhere in terms of quality, it is above season 6 but below season 5. When it comes to the other stuff, Tell your Tale is bean-mouth shit and I refuse to watch Make your Mark.
There's something I find funny about how hard people danced over G5's grave as if Hasbro hadn't left a giant crater on G4's legacy and dignity. The way I understand it, it is implied that at the beginning of the movie most ponies only care about fearing other tribes on a purely abstract, symbolic level. They can work themselves or each other into seeing Sunny's goals as an existential threat and lose their sleep over it if they really want to, but it would take a lot of additional time and effort. There's not much evidence either way, but I think otherwise Sprout's mom would at least sell actual deadly weapons instead of her wacky junk. If I'm right, then it's only logical that Hitch has no deep feelings about Sunny's beliefs and only opposes the stuff his job explicitly requires him to oppose, like property damage.
