"Official" means little when lots of customers are esl or new to sl. They will search the first thing they learn or the shortest term they know. There are items that don't show up when searching openpony that do when you search op or pony. It's up the the creators to make their items accessible, not the customer to find them.

And therein lies the problem, you can put whatever tags you want but you REALLY REALLY SHOULD put in the one single official tag, no matter what else you do. It's extremely, extremely, extremely aggravating and tiring to have to do five searches every time I wanna comb the market, most of which bring up duplicates, but all of which invariably find something that the other searches didn't.
Made combinatorially worse when the actual search term I want is not well defined (e.g. I don't know if the creator would've called their item a harness or a halter or just said "tack" or "horse tack" or bridle or reins) and now I have to search EACH of those terms in combination with "op", "open pony", "openpony", "popen" etc. etc. and the end result is that I have to make and look through like 30 marketplace searches and I just lose my mind.

If creators did nothing except tag their items "openpony" and nothing else, reliably, the market would be infinitely better than it is now. Fuck the third worlder ESLs, plus if this was true then they'd just quickly learn what the magic word is, it's not that obscure.

You can use boolean operators to search for multiple keywords at the same time. In this example, I think searching

Hi /opg/ anons. I don't usually come around here and in fact I've never opened SL in my life, but I have a few questions that you might be able to help me with.
I want to use the OpenPony model for a personal modelling/rendering project. I found the devkit with .blend files that appear to contain the base model. Is that the best way to get it, or is there a better way?
Additionally, there's so many good accessories and things in SL that I'd love to use. Is there a way, either officially supported or not, to get the models and textures for them out of SL and onto your computer? I remember many years ago I used NinjaRipper for a similar project with some game, but I don't know if that's the best way or there's something better, since again.
Sorry if these questions are stupid or have obvious answers. Like I said I'm retarded, I have never even opened SL before.

There's no official way to get stuff from SL. Things that are made by HMART and happen to be made by Izzy (who created the OP model), you can contact Izzy to ask for the mesh, and he's known to be very liberal with it so there's a good chance he'll just give you the mesh with permission to do whatever.
But stuff made by other people usually isn't distributed in mesh form and most people are not actually very forthcoming with letting others use their raw mesh.

If it's mostly for personal stuff though, there are ways to rip models from the viewer. I'm no expert on this myself, I just know that they exist.

They can't "come after you" for shit unless you are particularly legally weak somehow. Such as selling them for IRL money with your IRL details in a way that makes it easy to serve actual legal takedowns, and even then usually the first step is a takedown and then actually any serious action beyond that is vastly more expensive and trickier, especially when the "lost sales" might amount to like $10 of virtual dollars in an ancient MMO.

The only real danger is social, in that they will say mean words about you. This matters if you want to remain in good standing, it doesn't matter if you do it anonymously or whatever.
What this means in practice is that you shouldn't do it because it's not nice to steal shit that basically other anons made for their little virtual market and shit - it's not some megacorporation's copyright, it's some single guy modelling in blender. But it also means that if you just do it to mess around with shit on your own literally nothing will happen to you and nobody will come to you.
Maybe if you were like a famous creator with a big patreon and you showed off playing around with copybotted assets, and the owners made a stink about it, it'd be negative PR and might cause drama and whatnot. But for normal people literally just doing a personal project for fun, not social media personalities running PR or whatever, it's completely fine.

Since the law is basically powerless due to economies of scale, it boils down to a matter of respect. And in my opinion using something personally without explicit "permission" is in no way disrespectful to the original creator; respect goes both ways, and respecting the original wishes makes sense in most cases but there's a line beyond which it's unreasonable and if someone were to get genuinely mad at this that'd be their own problem IMO.
In any case if you don't even plan to distribute screenshots then it's not like they will even be able to find out in order to get mad in the first place so there's no problem.

If you want the most favorable outcome socially, it's better to ask. Most creators here would say yes and the ones who don't would still be supportive of your en devours. Your project sounds interesting and I hope you do share at least a little preview of the progress at some point. Asking might also get you extra support too. A lot of creators here go above and beyond to be helpful.
The truth is though, nobody will know if you ripped their stuff if it's never share it.

I wish I had made blue BOM my standard way earlier, but when I started using BOMs most of them were made for the green layout, and by the time I learned how to convert between types, all of my popens and all of the BOM layers I used were all using the green layout already and now it would take ages to convert everything to the blue layout.
If there was an easy, quick, automated way of converting them all, I'd do it, but for now it just doesn't seem like it's worth the effort.

I don't know, but personally I wouldn't spend money on something that's very visibly made of prims, unless it was really really cheap and looked close enough to what I had in mind. Making stuff out off prims tends to really inflate the size of the linkset and that bothers my autism a fair amount.
