Realistically how could they have ended the series? With a graduation? Celestia and Luna won't have authority over them once they graduate. So they could lose protection they provided. Magic is still leaking, there are apparently lots of magical items that got tossed into EQG and random people are finding them. Just about all the kids going to canterlot high know about magic with some even recording it. Plus those dangerous plants keep popping out of rifts and attacking people. The Girls have acquired magical abilities and have power up transformations. Use them. It's already been confirmed that Equestria's most dangerous villains get sent to EQG instead of being turned to stone. They should take an example from Pretty Cure and include physical combat. Precure is considered a show for little girls yet they have great fight scenes.

One of my gripes with Equestrian girls is lack of character development and solving of friendship crisis only to forget about that person and move on like they didn't exist. It's full of predictable resolutions, repetitive magical school events and the forced inclusion of human Twilight felt like a forced reset for the series. It's crazy how they took a show that's set in a high fantasy magical pony world to a generic highschool setting.

At the end of season 7 the girls banished the pony of shadows into a portal. Going off how usually the most dangerous things get sent to the Equestria Girls world and the fact that Star Swirl the bearded uses EG as a dumping ground I could see the pony of shadows getting banished to Equestria Girls world and becoming attached to Flash or Zephyr by praying upon their insecurities. The only problem I have with this is that season 7 was wack and i'd rather not consider it canon.
